When did you first know you had alters? What happened?
Ahhh this is always a fun story to tell. I was either 16 or 17 years old, I can't remember exactly. It was around Christmas time. I was very very depressed at the time with a lot of suicidal tendencies. A girl from my school had just died in a car accident a couple of weeks before, and it was Christmas break now. My parents weren't exactly the best, and they isolated me from almost all of my friends. I was very depressed and lonely, even more so because my classmate had just died and I had no one to talk to. Im not so much a fan of Christmas. Anyway, I needed some time alone but as a rule, I wasn't allowed to be in my room unless I was sleeping. So I did all of the household chores and then put my shoes on so I could take a quiet walk around the block to clear my head. When I told my mother I was going for a walk, she lost it on me. She took my phone away from me and told me to go clean something. Later on, my dad came home. He's not exactly the brightest (and usually just does whatever my mother tells him to do) but he's typically the more reasonable of the two of them. So I was kind of hoping for an end to the madness that was my mother refusing to talk to me, and for a reason I didn't even understand. But when he walked in, the first thing he said to me was demanding to know who I was going to meet on my "walk." I told him I just needed to clear my head and I wasn't going to meet anyone, but he kept telling me I was lying. I was already an emotional wreck and this was breaking me down even further. I can't quite remember what happened next (I had been losing time for quite a while before this, but I usually just ignored it and put it off as something that I was making up) but I do remember standing in my mothers room while she yelled at me. She said some awful things to me that night that Id rather not repeat. I don't remember anything else about that night other than storming up to my room and crying (which was very unlike me, I typically just kept my mouth shut and agreed with whatever insults she threw at me). The next day I felt very off. I can never find the words to describe the way I felt that day. But I do remember taking the garbage outside that morning and I heard a voice talking to me in my head, apologizing for the fight I had with my mother the night before. I didn't even question it. I was feeling so unstable that I didn't even care. I went along with it because hey, it was a friend. Whoever he was, he was being nice to me. I didn't feel entirely alone anymore. I think it was probably only a day or two later that my new "friend" started talking to someone else in my head. It was terrifying, really. I thought I'd lost my mind. It was even worse when they got into heated arguments and started to argue with each other out loud.I thought I was crazy. I didn't know what was going on and I was scared. But I knew very well that I couldn't ask my parents for help because they would brush me off and yell at me. So I just dealt with it. It took quite a while, but eventually i found out that what was happening could be very accurately explained in the DSM-IV (which yes, I owned, because I wanted to go to school to become a psychologist. but it had been sitting on a shelf for quite a while until this point). Of course I didn't really start by reading through that, I started on the Internet. But every time I came across Dissociative Identity Disorder, i remembered the movie Sybil, which we watched in psychology class in high school. And I always shook my head because I was nothing like that, so of course I didn't have DID (which is why I sort of despise that movie). But basically, I eventually ended up giving in and doing a ton of research on DID. I talked to counselors online, I joined forums, I found people who said that had DID and asked them questions too. And eventually I was finally able to go back to therapy (which my mother had refused to let me go to for about a year) and got diagnosed after some time. And that, my friends, is the story of how I found out that I had DID.~Lexi
another public service announcement that needs to be made
this is a point that has come up several times in the past, both in tags and in other depictions such as United States of Tara.
so, as a reminder, alters are not actual medical or mental health professionals. they are not able to diagnose, treat or provide therapy. they may seem like they have more expertise but they do not come with actual history in the necessary fields, or required learning about protocol and the dangers of things such as transference and dual relationships.
alters can sometimes seem really, really good at their roles! but please realize that this is from the perspective of someone who likely doesnāt actually have experience in that particular field, and therefore does not have the insight to help them pick up on when theyāre doing a shit job bc theyāre not actual professionals. itās entirely possible that the alters have absorbed information based on stereotypes or media depictions, or based on understandings that the system has about people in a particular field. this does not mean that said alters are actually capable of making the same kinds of calls that professionally trained folks in said fields are able to make. alters are based on metaphor and integrating information from both internal and external sources - professionals have a collective of both educational and practical experience that gives them such places of authority and information.
this point isnāt made often enough and while weāve brought it up in the past on this blog, it still needs to be reinforced once in a while.

Adding that even if the alter has professional training because you/the system has professional training? That training still canāt be used to diagnose or treat you! Therapists/doctors canāt be their own patients or treat friends/family for a reason. Theyāre too close to the issue and so not objective enough. You can 100% have the training required and still fuck everything up when it comes to trying to figure out whatās going with yourself and what to do about it. Alters are no different here. Even if they feel separate from you, whateverās going on with you directly affects them, and they canāt be objective enough to be professional even if they are actually capable of being professional.

Which alter likes to come out most?
Id say that might be Amber or Quinn. I think that out of all of my alters, Derrick, Amber, and Quinn come out the most. But I've been told that Derrick doesn't actually really like to be out much, he just does it because he wants to keep things running smoothly. I know that Amber likes to be out, and I know that Quinn loves to come out (and cause trouble, most of the time). ~Lexi
do you have a favorite alter?
Hmm, I can't say that I do, although I have certain alters that I might be more fond of than others. I like Derrick a lot because he's very responsible and whenever I lose time I typically panic about what might've happened, but when I find out that it was derrick who was out, I don't worry so much. I also think Rose is very nice and sweet but I worry when she's out because she can be very naive sometimes. I don't have many alters that I can say I really dislike, although some of them can be a bit troublesome sometimes. ~Lexi

How does your boyfriend handle everything? (The switching of the alters)
My boyfriend actually handles everything extremely well. I've never known someone who handled my alters and I so well. He's very supportive of me recovering in however that I choose to do so, and he's actually become friends with a few of my alters. I've never really had someone who actually got close to my alters like this and it's honestly just nice to know that I have someone who cares about me and my system that much. He always seems to know when im dissociating even if I don't say anything haha. And he always seems to know who's out when I switch. I think everyone with DID deserves a person like him in their lives. ~Lexi
How are you doing today? (:
Im doing alright! Thank you for asking :)~Lexi
What would happen if a minor got admitted to a mental hospital for DID in Colorado (USA)? We're not sure what to do but we need help.
Im glad that you're looking for help for what you're going through, thats always a great step!Im not entirely sure what would happen, other than that you would most likely go through a psych exam which typically just consists of a doctor asking you a bunch of questions about what you're experiencing. If anyone knows more about this, please add what you know! ~Lexi
Highlights of Changes from DSM-IV-TR to DSM-5: Dissociative Disorders
Overview
Derealization is included inĀ the name and symptom structure of what previously was called depersonalization disorder and is nowĀ called depersonalization/derealization disorder
Dissociative fugue is now a specifier of dissociativeĀ amnesia rather than a separate diagnosis
The criteria for dissociative identity disorder haveĀ been changed to indicate that symptoms of disruption of identity may be reported as well as observed,Ā and that gaps in the recall of events may occur for everyday and not just traumatic events
Experiences of pathological possession in some cultures are included in the description of identity disruption
Dissociative Identity Disorder
CriterionĀ A has been expanded to include certain possession-form phenomena and functional neurological symptoms to account for more diverse presentations of the disorder
Criterion A now specifically statesĀ that transitions in identity may be observable by others or self-reported
According to Criterion B, individuals with dissociative identity disorder may have recurrent gaps in recall for everyday events, not justĀ for traumatic experiences
I really donāt understand DID and being someone who has a mental illness I should be more understanding and receptive but itās just that I literally do not understand or comprehend. I donāt want to sound ignorant and be bashed for thinking itās fake but the only words I can think is I donāt understand
If you ever have questions, you're more than welcome to ask!

Can alters front for years without being fully aware that they are alters, and can hosts die?
Hey there anon! From what I understand, the answer to both of these is yes. I donāt have first hand experience with either of these, but Iāve certainly heard of things like this happening to other people.
I know of several systems who have had alters die, and a few that were the core or host. Sometimes itās also possible for the core or host of a system to be dormant for years at a time, making it appear that theyāve died when they actually havenāt. And itās also possible for alters to front for long periods of time, even if they donāt realize that they are part of a system. Many systems donāt have an original or core, and the host is just the alter thatās out most often. It may even be that the current host doesnāt realize that they arenāt the original or core of the system.
Many systems donāt entirely believe in ācoresā or āoriginalsā though, so it all depends on your personal beliefs on that particular topic.
Do any of my followers have anything to add to this? I know that there are plenty of systems on here that have talked about these experiences before.
~Lexi
Alters cannot die.
I cannot say this enough times. Possibly barring extremely unusual circumstances involving programming, alters cannot die. They are dissociated parts of the mind! Just as you canātĀ ākillā a preference, opinion, trait, or ability, you canāt ākillā an alter. Alters can go dormant or they can integrate, and either of these options can seem like death. This is especially true if the alter integrates with the system instead of any other particular alter or if the alter was comparatively less differentiated and so doesnāt make as much of a noticeable difference in those that they integrate with. However, the dissociated materials that formed the alter cannot disappear, only be integrated into another alter or left to drift as fragments until a later time.
Please stop encouraging the narrative that alters are physical, objective, fully separate entities. They are a part of the system that creates them, no matter how dissociated, individual, and unique they may be or seem. This doesnāt make them any lesser, but it does make them slightly different from an individual with their own body, and one of these differences is that they canāt simply cease to exist unless the system itself ceases to live. Even if the conflict, tension, or trauma that created and sustained the alter was resolved, the result of that resolution would still be an integration of their materials into the system or another alter.
I understand that some people can have the subjective internal experience that an alter has died just as people can have the subjective internal experience that integration involves a loss. However, the ādeathā of an alter is not and never could be a death in the true sense of the word. Calling it such encourages people to view alters as more separate than they truly are while giving false ideas of how alters can beĀ āgotten rid of.ā

Hey hi! We really really want to follow more system/DID/multiplicity blogs. So please reblog this if you run one of those blogs!
This might sound odd but I'm watching Drop Dead Fred for the first time in ages and can't help wondering if it's about DID now???
Iāve never actually seen it, but I think Iāll check it out when I get the chance!
~Lexi
Sorry I havent answered asks in the past couple of days, I've been super busy (and dissociated last night) but I'll be on it asap!

About Executive Dysfunction; for neurotypical people
Friends, family members and loved ones of learning disabled and mentally ill people need to have a working knowledge of what Executive Dysfunction is, and respect the fact that it is a prominent feature of that personās psychology and life.
Executive Dysfunction is best known as a symptom of autism and ADHD, but it also features in depression, anxiety disorders schizophrenia, OCD (which by the way is also an anxiety disorder), personality disorders; etc, a whole myriad of mental illnesses and disabilities can result in executive dysfunction.
(fact: I have personally known people diagnosed with each ofthe above mentioned disabilities. let me tell yea having mental disabilities in aneurotypical world turns your life upside down and we often feel suffocatedand trapped by it with no way out)
Years ago when I was like 14 and had recently learned of my autism diagnosis, I watched a youtube interview between autistic people, and an autistic woman said something along these lines, āSometimes, a lightbulb will burn out, but I cannot change it. I have the physical capability to change the lightbulb, and I want to change the lightbulb, and I know I need to do it, but because of my autism I just donāt do it. So the lightbulb remains unchanged for weeks. Sometimes people have to change the lightbulb for me.ā
When she said that I related so much, because constantly throughout my whole life I have wanted and needed to do things with my wanting and needing being akin to my spurring an extremely stubborn horse who refuses to move. For the first time I learned that I wasnāt just ālazyā, I had a condition that prevented me from doing things as easily as other people can, but unfortunately it took me years since then to understand that.
Actually, I like the horse analogy. Imagine that you are a horserider, but your horse is entirely unwilling to move even if you want to move. You dig in your heels, you raise the reins, but the horse refuses to respond. Your wants and needs are the rider, and your executive functions (the parts of your mind responsible for getting things done) are the horse.
I think itās incredibly dangerous for neurotypical loved ones to not understand, or be aware of, or respect executive dysfunction. Neurotypical can assume that we are just being lazy, careless, selfish or difficult, when in reality we want to do the thing but our brains prevent us from consistently and reliably doing the thing. That misinterpretation can lead to toxic behavior and resentment on the part of the loved one, which will harm us emotionally and do us a lot of damage gradually over time. That damage can take the form of internal self-criticism, complicating executive dysfunction even further and making it worse.
howā¦. does one know if they have thisā¦. :(
well if you constantly want to do things but you just canāt bring yourself to do it for some reason, you could have executive dysfunction.
Hey, um... Any adive on a system learning to drive? My main issue is one of us is a little (somewhere between 5 and 9, we're not sure) who's triggered to front with loud noises, like truck horns. And we live in a tourist heavy area. It already happened once, luckily we were really close to home and the other alters helped guide her on how to get there, but it was really scary. Any ideas? (ā_ā;)
Hey there! That does sound pretty scary. Iām sorry that happened to you guys. I think the best advice I could give is maybe you can try to teach your little how to drive. I know that not all littles can, but many young alters are extremely advanced for their age. Iāve heard of toddlers writing in full sentences, four year olds that can do college level work, and even young alters that can learn to drive. I myself have a two year old alter named Quiet who doesnāt speak louder than a whisper and only says certain words, but sheās still managed to get complex ideas across to my boyfriend.
If you think itās possible, try taking your little alter to a big empty parking lot where you can teach her the basics of how to drive. After a while, she may get the hang of it! That way, if anything happens while driving, she can at the very least find a place to pull over until someone else can front and do the rest of the driving. Try to think of how you learned to drive and teach her in a similar way. Itās always easiest to start in parking lots though, because thereās nothing to accidentally hit.
I hope this works out for you!
~Lexi
This was me I accidently hit anon but oh my gosh thank you so much, just readig that was encouraging TuT Iām just so worried itās going to happen and my mom will realise whatās happening or worse NOT realise and I donāt want things to get bad but⦠Yeah, thanks so much, this is great advice! She is a small little booger, but she can do alot. Acts five but has the intelligence of someone atleast nine which is why I said that. Her nameās Mary.
I'm really glad this helped! And I hope you can teach her to drive at least a little bit. To be fair, lots of kids can drive things like go-carts and dirtbikes, so I don't see why a little alter couldn't learn the basics of driving a car and keeping you guys safe. Good luck! ^.^
