He followed the girl inside, glancing around her home. “I can definitely promise that. That is a deal.”

She smiled, pouring out wine for them both. “Okay so... normal... drinks conversation. Where did you grow up?”

She nodded, getting her key out. The lights were out so she’d assumed Chrysta had got Alice to bed. She headed straight into the kitchen, getting out glasses. “And... we won’t have a mention of the supernatural or of ex fiancee’s during our drink. Promise?”

“Do you… want to have a drink with me then?” he asked with a hopeful look on his face.

“I.. think i would love that Mr Cailan... fae.” She laughed, realising she knew very little about him. “Come on, i must have a bottle of wine in the house.”

Cailan watched her for a moment before nodding. “Would you like me to leave?”

“No... no definitely not. You’re the only person i’ve been totally honest with in a long time.”

Cailan nodded, sometimes he didn’t know how to respond. He often took things literally. “I’m sorry,” he said. “Then only you can decide to do that for you.”

Abbie sighed, looking ahead. “Life isn’t fair.” She looked ahead at her house. Right now, she wished she was the drunk one. At least she’d have that defence. 

“Hard to do that when he’s the invisible man.” She half laughed, just feeling stuck in her current situation. “I would like to... do something for me for once.”

“Is it wasting your life if there is a chance for you and him?” He looked at her. “I cannot answer that. The woman I loved… she did not wait for me. And what you said… you were right. I am glad she did not. She lived a happy life.”

“What if there isn’t a chance and he’s just too afraid to tell me?” She turned to face him. “I want... to live a life.”

“It’s not about growing up. One can feel guilty, hurt confused at any age.” He glanced towards her. What was he doing pursuing this mortal girl? She was not over another man and he was far from human.

She sighed, still not looking at him. Playing with the keys in her hands. “I think that’s... the worst part. Is i’d just... got over him. I’d just started to move on.. to look at other men.” She glanced at him, letting her eyes move over him. “And then he shows back up... he’s not dead and... i’m the bad guy. For thinking he was dead and moving on. How do i explain that to my daughter?”

“I do not wish to make you feel guilty,” he said gently, glad when the car stopped. “Of course.”

“It’s not you... maybe i should be growing up and moving on.” She closed her eyes. Letting out a breath.

“It’s... a feeling of guilt.” She half smiled at him, pulling into her parking space. “Thank you.”

“Is that good or bad? Should I stop?” he asked. “Yes. Love. An emotion I did not think I could feel.”

“I... don’t know.” She confessed. “I like it. Of course i do, you’re an attractive man.” She rubbed her lips together, trying her best to concentrate on the road. She felt like she was cheating on Chris. Even if there was nothing to cheat on. “I’m glad you got to feel it.”

“You sound startled,” he said. “And you’re blushing.” He looked over at her. “Yes, I feel things now I never thought I could. That I don’t think I even knew back then.”

“i’m always startled whenever someone flirts with me. Haven’t.... been with anyone since... well yeah.” She chewed her lip. That all hurt her still. “Love?”

“I believe that was my attempt at doing so,” he glanced at her. “It was a time of my life where… I focused solely on the mission. At times it does not feel like me.”

“Oh.” She blushed, trying to keep her eyes on the road. “That’s nice.” She coughed, rubbing her lips together. “No? So you’re a different man now?”

“No, I would rather you say other things to me,” he said, smirking slightly to himself. “No, it is not. The way I was hurt was not the norm.”

“Why do you sound so flirty?” She laughed. “It must’ve been hard for you.”

“That does sound weird,” he laughed with her, feeling oddly relaxed in her car. “Not really, I have been shot and burnt.”

“A little weird. Maybe i won’t say it again.” She looked over at him, before back at the road. “You say that like it’s so normal. Even in faeland it can’t be the norm.”
