It had been some time since the last intelligence report was sent, it was almost becoming worrisome. Fortunately, the clacking of hooves on the rocky gravel leading to Whitehall told Robert hadnât given up just yet.
After being led upstairs (and narrowly avoiding the senior Woodhull), looked to Abraham and asked a simple request.
âCan you explain more of what happened with you and the Rangers? I didnât think it wise to ask through letters..â
His voice didnât seem to hold any suspicion, and his expression was simply confused and asking of clarity. He hadnât discovered anything.
(( throwaway ask bc i donât want ALL the rp to die )) @ask-roberttownsend
Abraham was just at his desk in his room, until the sudden, abrupt appearance of Robert. Frankly, he was surprised as this wasnât scheduled at all, and how Robert had managed to even unlock the door on his own.
As Robert stated his reason of being here, Abraham sighed and rubbed a hand at the back of his head. He felt a small surge of guilt rush through him at the moment, but he concealed it. He had to make sure he sounded truthful, anyway.
âRobert, didnât I clarify? I was beaten by the Queenâs Rangers the other day, and theyâre out for you and the rest of the ring.â
It seemed as though Robert thought essentially breaking and entering was not immoral (not to mention illegal), and therefore didnât bring it up.
Robert steps closer to Abraham, standing slightly off center and resting his arm on the back of the chair.
âYou did, yes, but I need a bit⊠more. What evidence do they have, why did they let you free with no overseer, why are they targeting former members as well, what will happen to us post-capture⊠anything along those lines. I donât want to jump to conclusionsâŠâ
Abraham realized he had to keep up with this never-ending lie. Heâd have to commit to this until the end of the revolution, which was one extensive time period, but it was for Robert. For him to help the ring once more.
And yet, that assurance his heart tried to negotiate with his mind still didnât wash away the guilt.
Abe sighed, looking away. He attempted to defend himself, to keep this lowly lie standing.
âI know that, but Iâm still trying to figure out all the facts about the situation. The Culper Ring and I are reporting back to Washington so he can offer the right protections for us.â
âWell, yes I know that, but isnât there anything more you havenât told me, or anything youâve heard from Washington, or anyone concerned with the ring for that matter?â
This is a distraction for Robert, and Abraham can plainly tell. Yes, most of it is for safety and the betterment of the war, but a big part is also to be able to forget for a while.
Abraham sighed, resisting putting a hand on his forehead. As much as Robert would be a help to the ring, keeping up this lie would be tougher than Abe initially thought. Both the guilt and the looseness of the lie gnawed at him.
âWithout you in the ring, the Queenâs Rangers would be on your trail. They pick up you location like a fox picks up a scent.â
Abrahamâs voice was firm, with a small undertone of annoyance from keeping up this lie. He would never project it onto Robert though.
âYouâre completely sure youâve told me everything you know? Iâve gone months with not a single update.â
Robert could tell Abrahamâs temper on the subject was thinning. Yes, he had more questions, but decided against bringing them up and risking an argument.
âIf you do hear any information at all on the matter, I ask you donât keep it from me..â
Abraham scoffed as he thought Robert probably realized how his annoyance was simmering towards the surface at Robert pressing on the subject more. He got out of his chair, taking the man's hands in aa firm enclosure. Abe looked into his eyes, as if to be assuring, but it wasn't without his emphatic gestures and looks. "Robert, I'm telling you--there is nothing else to discuss on the matter. Washington is still enforcing and finalizing secure measures for the ring." His tone was growing more insistent and irritable as the Quaker continued to pester him with doubt.
Robert tried to not look as worried as he felt. It was probably just paranoia anyway; he trusted Abraham to not lie to him again.
Robert takes a hold of Abrahamâs hands in a tight grasp, letting up after realizing how hard he was holding them.
âYes.. yes, youâre right.. you wouldnât keep things from me anyways.. Iâm sorry to pester you with this, darlingâŠâ
Eventually, if he keeps telling himself everything will be alright, heâll stop worrying.
Abraham realized heâd been too harsh on Robert, giving a small sigh. He held the manâs hands lightly, with gentle force, as to not startle him. Abe looked up at Robert, mustering a softer look so that Robert knew no harm was done.
âThatâs fine, I get you were just curious.â
He planted a warm kiss on Robertâs cheek, not too long but not too short.
His cheeks still flush pink automatically, though he doesnât get near as flustered as he used to. Robert looks down slightly at the man in front of him, an obviously doubt-ridden attempt at a smile on his face.
âItâs just-⊠sorry, darling..â
Robert gently fidgets with a part of Abrahamâs sleeve around his wrist, trying to get back into a calm headspace.
Abraham feels that guilt linger in the back of his head from the lie heâd said, all to get Robert back in the ring. It feels like a light, yet persistent sting, only to grow if he dwelled on it.
Abe lets his vision divert to Robertâs face, examining his facial features to get his mind off of the slight regret he feels. Dammit, why was committing to this lie the best option? Couldnât fate have made it easier? Itâs almost a prophecy that this lie will be unraveled and revealed.
But he keeps his gentle facade up, with that same gaze on Robertâs face once more. His lips would usually twitch upward, but not with this guilt secretly stabbing him in the back.
Abraham looked away, saying with a soft tone, âRobbie- I-Itâs fine. No need to be sorry, dear.â
Robert gently pulls Abraham closer to himself, wrapping one of his arms around the manâs waist.
â⊠letâs leave it at that,â
Robert places a small kiss on the top of Abrahamâs head.
