I'm starting this account to answer any questions I can about Freemasonry. Keep in mind that there are certain things I won't be able to discuss, but it's a small list. I can only speak to my personal experience as a fairly active Brother in my state.

I've never really understood how rites work. Does each lodge have each own rite or can they have both?
It depends on what you mean by "rite". I'm guessing you mean Scottish/York Rite.
The three masonic degrees of the blue lodge (your standard masonic lodge) are uniform.
Scottish Rite and York Rite are what we call "appendant bodies". Think the Shriners. They're their own separate organizations and system of degrees, but require candidates to be Master Masons (3rd degree in blue lodge) before joining. These bodies are typically made up of Masons from a variety of lodges in their area.
A lodge is not a "York Rite" or "Scottish Rite" lodge, but can have members who are also in either Rite.
Scottish Rite is by far the more popular of the two. That's where you get your 32nd degree Masons and the double eagle. Technically it goes up to 33, but the 33rd is a strictly honorary degree that is awarded for outstanding dedication and service to the Scottish Rite.
In the USA there are two "Jurisdictions" for Scottish Rite. The Northern (east of the Mississippi, north of the Mason Dixon line) and Southern (everyone else).
York Rite gets a little weirder. Technically the York Rite is three separate organizations in a trenchcoat.
The Holy Royal Arch is the first of the York Rite bodies, ending with the eponymous degree, which has been called the most beautiful degree in all of Freemasonry. From what I understand, in some countries the Holy Royal Arch is included in the Blue Lodge, but in the USA it's not.
The Cryptic Council has, for my money, the coolest name and also the coolest emblem. Look at this thing. Isn't it so fucking sick?
If i said that the name and emblem weren't a big reason I got interested in the York Rite, I'd be lying.
The final body of York Rite is the "chivalric orders". Self-styled knights, culminating in the Knights Templar.
What made you join Freemasonry?
A couple things:
I've got a loooooong family history of Masonry. Grandfathers, Great Grandfathers, etc. When I was a little kid, i spent summers with my grandparents, and Grandpa used to let me run around wearing one of his rings that was too small. That really cemented that one day I wanted to be a Mason.
My stepdad is the secretary of my mother lodge, and I wanted an excuse to see him more. He's a Dan Brown Mason, and I grew up watching him get more and more into it.
I'm into the esoteric / occult so I wanted to see what the Masons had going on in that sense. (not a ton unfortunately)
