āThank you for going and seeing Jessica for me, Rick.ā Morty smiles, slipping the thick enchanted ring easily around his finger. He looks up and meets his grandfathers gaze, but he doesnāt miss the look of guilt in the older mans eyes.
āYeah, no problem.ā Rick mutters, turning away almost immediately.
Morty frowns and crosses the room, moving faster than he really intended to, and winds up basically teleporting in front of his grandfather. Rick jumps in surprise, shifting a step away, but Morty carefully grabs his shoulders in an attempt to stop him.
āRick, please.ā He whispers, looking up in an attempt to meet the older mans gaze. Rick looks away. āDonāt blame yourself. It was an accident, and I donāt blame you.ā
āI- fuck, Morty, I shouldāve done more to help! You told me that kid made you uncomfortable, you told me you thought something was wrong with him, a-and I didnāt even check it out! I just- I just fucked off to Birdpersonās place-ā
āRick!ā He tries to interrupt, and Rickās eyes snap open so he can glare down at the brunette.
āItās my fault you got killed!ā
āAnd itās your fault Iām back!ā He replies heatedly, and Rickās glare softens slightly. āIf you hadnāt come to save me he- Rick he had me pinned to the fucking shelves in the library, a-and he was going to tear my fucking throat out. If- If you hadnāt showed up I wouldnāt be here to yell at you!ā
He pauses, guilt twisting his lips to a frown when he sees that his words have just poured salt in the wound; Rick hates that this happened to him, and hates that Morty died because of his lack of response to his grandsons concerns. Morty sighs softly.
āRick,ā This time when he speaks, his voice is gentle. āI- I know you feel guilty and I get it, but Iām telling you that honestly I- Iām not upset. Okay? Iām alive because of you. What happened was an accident, but you coming to get me wasnāt; you always come pick me up from school.ā Rick reluctantly nods his head, and Morty feels a flush of relief. āIām here, and breathing, because of you.ā
Rick lets out a soft breath and nods once more.
Morty smiles and shifts forward to wrap his arms around his Grandpa, arms dropping to wind gently around his waist. Rick hums a soft noise of approval and returns the embrace immediately, smiling slightly when he hears a soft purring noise from his grandson.
Morty shifts slightly and nuzzles his face gently into Ricks neck and inhales deeply, eyes almost rolling back as the older mans scent floods his senses. He smells of whiskey, laundry soap, and something chemical from the lab. Itās intoxicating. Deeper beneath is the scent of Rickās blood, smelling as heavenly as honey, drool pooling in his mouth.
His lips part slightly so he can inhale, tasting the musk of Rickās skin, and he knows Rick heard him inhale because he hears the older mans pulse speed up. That discovery brings immediate interest and suddenly his ear is to Rickās chest. He hears the organ pound in surprise -no doubt a reaction in response to his sudden movement- but even after the surprise fades the pace doesnāt really slow down.
Morty glances up toward Rickās face through his lashes, and his grandpas face is burning red. He pulls away almost immediately, cheeks dusted with the faintest hint of a blush.
āSorry.ā He offers a sheepish and embarrassed smile, but Rick waves a dismissive hand and smiles in return.
āDonāt worry about it. Are you hungry?ā
Morty takes a moment to answer, senses focused on Rickās still pounding heart. When Rick waves a hand in front of his face he snaps out of it.
āHungry? You? Food? Want?ā He replies sarcastically, already walking toward his mini fridge, and Morty bites his tongue to hold back a cheeky response.
āStarved.ā He growls lowly, Rickās scent still upon his tongue. He doesnāt miss the way the man shivers slightly.
Morty watches silently as Rick approaches with a blood bag, and realizes he was only partly lying; he is hungry, but not for blood.
He doesnāt admit this as he lets Rick hand him a blood bag filled with a deep purple liquid, and he pokes a hole in the top with his fangs and digs in.
