Prisoners get in place in the latrine for their nightly feeding by the guards.  If there is a lot of hard labor expected of the prisoners the next day, they’ll be slopped earlier, but otherwise this is their only food for the evening.  The even crueler part is that there are more prisoners than guards, so some won’t get fed, and they are forced to resort to sniffing around the other prisoners’ butts hoping for some yet more recycled shit, or staying in the latrine hoping a guard or sometimes even a Superior might take a late night dump.  Keeping the prisoners hungry keeps them hungry for shit, and appreciating even that.
