SANTHOME CATHEDRAL | MADRAS SERIES

   Santhome Church, a Roman Catholic church was built in the 16th century by Portuguese explorers over the supposed tomb of one of the 12 apostles of Jesus, St Thomas. (came to India in A.D 52 and martyred in A.D 72, on St Thomas Mount) It was later rebuilt by the British in 1893. It is one of the only three cathedrals in the world that have a basilica built over the tomb of an apostle. 

   The cathedral is built in Neo-Gothic style with a dazzling spire height of 183’ and beautifully worked glass windows. As of the style, it’s characterized by strong vertical lines, pointed windows and decorative tracery. The church also has an attached museum for exhibition of relics and other related artifacts. It’s one of the most significant landmarks of the city and has been declared as a ‘National Shrine’ (National heritage designation) It’s majestic presence is one of Madras’s strongest.
