Sure! (Now we’re in more of a headcanons territory than just literally speaking from the book)
Soda is a shell of what he once was, can’t stand to hold up his mask anymore. His little brother used to be shy, but he knew he was happy. Now he just stares emptily forward, no more begging to stay up on the porch to watch the sun set, or arguing over seconds, now it was him and darry begging for him to just say anything and eat something. He feels so mixed up and he wishes his mama were here to help. He can’t make sense of what’s happened and his mind drifts, strangely, back to mickey. It was the only time before his parents, and dallas and johnny that he had lost someone he loves. It was stupid, but remembering being held tightly and apologized to about how sorry they were that he had to be taken away was comforting.
Steve is a mess. He’s already lost before and now he’s lost two of his friends. Steve isn’t talked about much in the book but he cared for the people in the gang. He feels so gutted for how pony is after what went on. He’s angry and confused and hurt. And soda? His best friend? He knew he was the “crybaby” of the bunch but now whenever they hung out he’d silently break down sobbing, and steve’s never been good at this kind of stuff so all he can do it put an arm around his shoulder and stiffly say “it’s alright” even though it isnt, and he’s choking back tears himself.
joly moly i dont even- i - okay like half of steve’s is justification
Two-bit..two-bit…. There are multiple routes we very well could take. First and foremost, the first thing he says? “He’s just a kid!’ It’s a plead for mercy, not anger, not sadness, desperation. After an entire book of not facing the reality of things, joking to save his life, he can’t. I think he spent a lot of extra time with his family, but being home made him feel empty. after all johnny, johnny used to sleep on that couch, shyly eat from the plate of breakfast tossed together for him, walk out the door before two was awake. But now, he wouldn’t find him again around town or in the lot, when he came over to the curtis house Dallas wouldn’t be smoking slumped into the armchair, Johnny wouldnt be sitting with pony seemingly speaking nothing, but saying so much. No matter, he would still joke because if he can’t do that, what good is he doing for the rest of them while they grieve.
Darrel. He’s trying to hold everyone together, and he sees just how broken each is, but at the same time he’s clueless as to what to do. He tries to move on, “The world keeps spinning” after all, but no one else seems to be able to. He’s trying to get pony to stay alive, holding soda while he sobs and sobs and talks about every damn thing wrong in this world, tries to check jn on kieth because he saw through the ‘missin my switchblade’ charade, but he refuses to face it. Steve still comes around a lot, but he’s a lot less rowdy, less loud, takes up less space. He helps darrel cook sometimes if it’s early enough, or helps soda when he’s not around. And every time darry leaves for work he cant help the pit in his stomach and lump in his throat, he wants to be there. He gets sloppy at work, to busy worrying, and his coworks notices and try to make light conversation and joke, but for onces, darrel is the one with his head up in the clouds.
Darry, soda, steve, twobit, and pony.
