Hello I have a 13 week old mini Aussie who I would like to train to become my migraine alert dog. I am not able to get a trainer for financial reasons so i wanted to know if you had any tips on how to get started
Hi! I have a post on this here :)
Let me know if you have any questions! Here are a few books I found of use while training:
Super Sniffer Handbook: A Guide to Scent Training for Medical Alert Dogs
Super Sniffer Drill Book: A Workbook for Training Detector Dogs
Training Your Own Service Dog: Step by Step Instructions with 30 Day Intensive Training Program to Get You Started
Good luck on your service dog journey!

Remember to Keep Up With Your Training Logs!
Hey guys! I wanted to give a quick reminder of how important training logs are if you are owner-training a service dog. If you got your dog from a professional training program, the program will have in-depth records of your dogās training (and usually some form of ācertificationā on top of that). If you owner trained your dog, itās extremely important that you have these logs as well! If an issue ever arrises with your service dog, they will serve as one of your only proofs of training.
While proof of training cannot be used as terms for entering a public establishment, they can be used as terms for receiving service dog related benefits (such as free county or state dog registration, discounts from certain companies, etc). They will also serve a very important purpose if you ever wind up in court due to your dog.Ā
Even if your dog is already half-way through his training and you didnāt log anything previously, you can still start now! Hereās a sample log to fill out each week.Ā
Sample Service Dog Training Log
Owner Trainerās Name: [jamie doe] Dogās Name: [kennelās my shining star ājackā] Breed: [golden retriever] Gender: [male] Age: [2 years, 4 months; your best guess if you have a shelter dog]
Week of: [19-25 Nov 2017] Hours:[8.5] ([6]Ā On Site) + ([2.5]Ā Outings)
Health: [bath & nails trimmed in tuestday, heartworm preventative given on saturday, brushed daily, and vet appointment scheduled for next week. diet remained the same. no health concerns.] Problems: [barked in the hospital room when a nurse knocked on the door] Outings: [.5 hrs spent in walmart with permission on tuesday, 1 hr spent at the hospital with permission accompanied by (trainer name) on thursday, and 1 hr spent in intermediate obedience training class with (trainer name) at (training facility) on friday.] Socialization: [dog was exposed in a positve mannor to tile floors, grass, gravel, men with beards, children, other dogs, stairs, elivators, rubbinc alcohol, etc. use the blow socialization shart to give you ideas. he was nervous around metal slat stairs, people with hats, revolving doors, and escalators.] Obedience: [practiced CGC behaviors at home and in the local park under moderate distractions. broke long distance down stay when a child ran up to say hi. his heeling was slightly distracted.] Service Dog Tasks: [practiced brace indoors and on park benches around the community. still needs work in holding his stand stay for londer durations. practiced panic attack alert at home, and he alerted in public for the first time on tuesday in walmart.] Manners: [worked on impulse control around food and open doors. still needs work in not jumpin up on guests when they enter the home. still likes to dart out the door if left open.]
Comments: [enrolled in a novice trick dog class, cgc test scheduled for next saturday, and purchased a new āin trainingā vest for jack from indistrial puppy.]
Keep these logs in a binder along with certificates of your dog passing the CGC exams, public access test, etc. Itās also a good diea to have vieos of your dog on hand (video of the public access test, and videos of him tasking).
I hope this helps ⤠~ Lex (& Faithā¦. & Defiance)
Apps for Service Dog Training
A list of useful apps for those of you who are training your own Service Dogs (or are just looking for some cool apps to help with your SD). I only have an iPhone, and I am unsure if these are on both IOS and Android, however I suspect most of these are or there is at least a similar one. (This will be updated as I find more apps).
- Riley
Nagdu - While this app was created for the National Association of Guide Dog Users, it is helpful for anyone with a service dog. It has the entirety of the ADA Service Dog section, individual State Laws, and general guidance with things like hotels, restaurents, and other places of buisness. Free
BringFido - This Ā allows you to find pet friendly hotels, restaurants, parks, beaches, and tons more. You can also book your hotel, look up their pet policy, and use filters to find the hotels that would best fit your dog. Super useful for dogs who are not 100% PA trained and are not protected by state laws - do some training and be a little less anxious about it. Free
Pet Coach - App that connects you to dog trainers, vets, and nutritionists if you have questions about troubleshooting problems or ensuring that your pup is maintaining a proper weight. Free
iClicker - Self explanatory: Sometimes you forget your clicker in a moment of brain fog or you simply donāt want to bring a physical clicker with you. iClicker is simple - just press the clicker button and have your volume on. Free

Can you make a master list of your favorite dog products like muzzles, crates, etc? You seem to do your research pretty well and Iām curious what you consider the essentials that every dog owner should have and the brands you recommend.
Iām goingto preface this by saying that at the time of this writing, Iām not sponsored by or affiliated with any of thebrands mentioned below and receive nothing in return for listing them. They areall brands that I have experience with/used or have always heard come highlyrecommended. Iāve also included links for some things mentioned.
Bareessentials of what people should have for dogs: Collar, tags, leash, crate, bowls, food, muzzle, toys, means for vet care, first aid kit. Donāt care what kind, everyoneshould have those things.

SD Checklist
It can be confusing when you first first start shopping for SD supplies if youāveĀ never had a Service Dog before. Ā Therefore, to help other beginning SD and SDiT teams, hereās a checklist of what you might need as a beginning (or even seasoned) SD Team:
(note, these are recommendations: every team is different and requires their own unique set of gear, so not all the gear listed may apply to you and your dog)
1) Vest and/or Cape and/or Harness
2) Backpacks/pouches/saddlebags (for carrying emergency info/meds if your vest doesnāt have pockets)
3) Head Collar (Gentle Leader and Halti are two popular brands)
4) Collar (with rabies tag, microchip tag,Ā ID tag, local city/state license)
5) Patches for Vest/Cape (Do Not Pet/Do Not Distract/Ignore Me is HIGHLY recommended in an attempt to deter the public from distracting your SD)
6) Leash Sleeve/Slip/Cover (I currently have PLEASE IGNORE ME and STAY BACK)
7) Documentation (NOTE: this is NOT legally required)
However, if youāre flying with a PSD/ESA, you will need a note from a mental health professional who is currently treating you. If you are a college student, having a copy of your schoolās SD policy and/or the ADA can help with access issues
8) ADA cards: theyāre these nifty little cards that state the law briefly, so you can educate people when you have access issues. Ā Amazon sells them, although there are also some variations to be found elsewhere on the internet (including Etsy).
8) Booties (for the summertime to protect against heat and for the wintertime to protect against the chemicals to melt ice)
9) Raincoat (patches can be helpful)
10) Winter coat (patches can be helpful)
11) Medical ID bracelet (for the human handler, of course!)
12) Car harness (because you donāt want your medical equipment flying through the windshield)
13) Cooling collar/coat for the heat
14) Portable water bowl
Donāt hesitate to let me know if Iām missing anything! Ā For the full post with reviews of where to acquire these items, click this link:Ā http://kelsieiris.blogspot.com/2016/07/the-list-goes-on-and-on-sd-checklist.html

Impatiently waiting for the new Puppy Culture workbook to come out (FOURTEEN DAYS TO GO!), in the mean time hereās their old exercise guidelines! Thereās a newer one but itās much too big for tumblr (freely available link)
See? Tiny on tumblr!Ā
We are in the second last column of guidelines right now. Hence why Iām starting to teach him how to rebound and do sharp turns safely, but with only a few repetitions each day to avoid straining him. He is still growing after all, even though he looks all grown up now. I will share a video of rebound tonight! Theyāre both almost completely vertical on target!
Iāve noticed in play, Thistle has taken up body-slamming him so have been regulating that on our outings, as I donāt want injury on him.
(Thistle got time out immediately after this aka stuck on lead for a couple of minutes until she calmed down)
I bought the activity book prior to buying Thyme to mentally prep myself for his lower exercise allowances compared to Thistle, especially being a medium-large purebred significantly increasing his risks. It was really good! I liked how it incorporated that one study that found that dogs allowed to use steps frequently had increased dysplasia, but those who are allowed moderate exercise on natural slopes had decreasedĀ incidences of dysplasia. If only the study included a report on how the frequency of puppy-jumping-up-and-launching-self-off-objects-to-the-owners-horror affected it.
This facebook post by the puppy culture people gives you a sneak peak at the hardcopy booklet but tbh all the info is on their website.
So far so good n_n we had worries about a luxating patella for a month there, but turned out it was just his hind legs growing faster than the back legs and he has since evened out. He has his next check up next week!
Out of curiosity, whatās on your Must Have for New Puppy list?
crate and/or xpen
collar/harness
leash
toys of varying sizes, shapes, textures, noises, etc
chews of varying sizes, shapes, textures, etc
treats
natureās miracle or other similar clean up spray
baby gates
bowls for food and water- stainless steel or ceramic preferred
food
some form of restraint for car travel- crate preferred
training classes

And basic grooming supplies.
And saintly patience
Completly forgot grooming supplies. Add fear free vet handling onto this list as well.
