We fixed some small bugs and improved the Browser. But the major improvement was our new tutorial. It was great to see how it helps our users to understand the main idea of Arundo. This was an awesome update.
Which events are going on – On the Road again.
In July 2014 we were at Output at Dresden University of Technology. This is a yearly event of the computer science faculty where students could present some of their research results and interesting projects. This goes along with interesting workshops and presentations.
What´s next? – Bright Future.
We are further working on the redesign of Arundo. The feedback of our users leads to incredible improvements, so the app will not only become much easier to use but contain long-awaited new features such as left-hand support and resizable modules. This update will come along with new tutorial videos. Isn´t that amazing? We expect to release this version in September.

What’s new? - Improving Arundo.
We continue fixing bugs and tweaks and collected more user feedback. So there are no breaking through updates in June but there will be one in July. We already submitted an update for approval to Apple which contains an incredible Tutorial.

In June 2014 I was at RE.WORK Technology Summit in Berlin. This great event was all about future technologies. After 2 days with 17 sessions I was stunned. You´re interested in this? Let´s take a look at our blog post one and two.

A lot of feedback allowed us to redesign our app. It leads into a new and elegant look. With our next update it becomes a clear and easy-to-use look without limiting your productivity workflow. In addition to that we will integrate a few demo videos to introduce the perfect way of working.

Session 5 Our Environment: Hacking and Reshaping a Sustainable Future
Speaker 1 Tumbleweed against desertification
One of the biggest problems of humanity is desertification. About 40% of land is dry land and almost 25% of the population live there. One of the challenges for improving the situation is to have more information (humidity, temperature, wind, etc.) about desertification. Shlomi Mir showed his idea: the tumbleweed. It is a sphere which can either move just with the power of wind or can stop moving by flattening. Combined with gps and few sensors it can collect data from different position automatically. At the same time it could seed plans autonomously. This could be a huge step to understand desertification.
Speaker 2 Bio-inspired robotics
Robotics have always animals or humans as inspiration. The Center of BioMicro-Robotics attempt to build a robot inspired by plants. So it´s kind of a root which spreads. It has also sensors – the idea is that it could move like a root. One example is the biomedical endoscopic robotic solution.
Session 6 Panel: The Internet of Things – Smart Interconnected World
This was a talk about the Internet of Things. My conclusion:
It´s already possible to connect a lot of things: TV, Phone, PC, refrigerator, etc.. So it´s just the question of time.
The biggest advantage is operational efficiency
So the first industries which are/could be affected are logistics especially supply chain management.
Session 7 Future Breakthroughs in Energy Storage & Production
Speaker 1 Photovoltaik more efficient
Rawlemon optimizes the efficiency of photovoltaik. It is a glass sphere which focuses the light. A construction automatically moves a panel to the focus point. Therefore it increases the energy earnings of a solar panel tremendously. The project succeeded a crowdfunding campaign with over 200.000 $ on Indiegogo.
Speaker 2 Computer unplugged
Can we operate a computer without spending energy? I was stunned as I heard this question. The critical factor in energy consumption of a computer is the processor in particular the heat development of transistors. At the moment everybody just cool down the processor – so it also costs energy to cool them down. The University of Perugia a switch (transistor) without heating. I cannot explain how they are doing that but they mentioned these sites. Maybe it helps you to understand.
Machine learning and artificial intelligence has many important applications – personalized advertisement, music recommendations, personalized products or newsfeeds or face recognition are just a few. The real challenge is that you have to analyze the right data – so smart data instead of big data. There are also a lot of open tools that help you to start with machine learning or even open prediction services. The pictures below show some of them.

Re.Work Technology Summit – Day 1 – Session 1 to 4
Re.Work Technology Summit was placed in the environmental forum in Berlin. The special fact is, that this was (or is?) a church – for these 2 days it was the church of technology. Not only because I had the possibility to speak on Start-up-stage on day 2 but as I saw the agenda a few weeks ago I was really looking forward to come here. The sessions were really interesting and I had the feeling, that the topics are very contemporary and important.
(Most of these topics are new to me – please comment if I´m writing something wrong. ;-) )Â
Session 1 Big Data & Healthcare
Can you imagine predicting an epidemic through analyzing social media? I couldn´t. But that´s what the University of London tried. Looking back they collected about 3 million tweets between May 2009 and March 2010. After analysis they could anticipate swine flu one week earlier than medical institutions did. Of course there are a lot of challenges heading their way like cross-correlation or data access. But I think if it could help preparing just one day earlier it would be a huge improvement.
 Session 2 Smart Wearable Robots
The BioEngineering Group attempted to build exoskeletons for humans. One of the prototypes for a leg exoskeleton seems to work very fine. To face problems like velocity and forces as well as seamless interaction with the human body and movement prediction they use artificial intelligence/machine learning based on brain research. There are a lot of applications for exoskeletons like for medical purposes.
 Session 3 Robotics: The New Revolution
Speaker 1 – Robotic + Origami = Robogami
The idea of a material that can change its appearance is the aim for Reconfigurable Robotics Labs. Because the real world is very low predictable there´s a need for materials that can change their appearence depending on the situation. The approach of Jamie Paik was to build a surface out of triangles which can be folded. The result can be converted into almost every shape.
Speaker 2 – Autonomous Cars
I think almost everybody heard of the autonomous car of google which is driving itself. But I didn´t hear about an autonomous car project of Freie Universität Berlin. Surprisingly the results of their autonomous car are amazing. The car could drive itself from one of berlins airport to the centre of the city. (Of course there was a driver who could intervene.) The technology is very sophisticated – so the car could also drive in Mexico City, which is quiet impressive! But not just driving around was a challenge – they also achieved smooth driving and driving on a parking lot. Paul Rojas can imagine that cars will drive autonomously on highways in 2020 and on every street in more than 20 years.
Speaker 3 – Waste sorting robot
ZenRobotics wants to fight the waste problem. They developed a robot to sort the waste. The real challenge is that waste could possibly have every shape and could be broken or cut or have other deformation.
 Session 4 Smart Materials Disrupting Society
Speaker 1 – Self-healing materials
One approach to create self-healing materials followed the Delft University of Technology. They developed asphalt that could be easily repaired. Asphalt consists of stones and bitumen (kind of a glue). Before asphalt breaks and has a lot of holes it starts with microcracks. That means that bitumen doesn´t stick with the stones anymore. To repair broken areas they mixed asphalt with stellwhool. Now they have the possibility to induce and therefore heat up the bitumen to liquid state. So it flows to broken places again and fixes the microcracks. The result is that if asphalt is heated up every 3-4 years the lifetime could potentially doubled. That´s not just cheaper but far better for ressources!Â
Speaker 2 – Dream of engineers: light and strong material
Usually you have materials that are light and weak or heavy and strong. The dream of engineers is a material which is light and strong. So Karlsruhe Institute of Technology was trying to develop such a material. The approach was a good material architecture – they combined a polymere structure with a ceramic coat. The results are amazing: They really could build such a material. The next challenge is to produce these structures in a larger size.

It was that time again – the WWDC, Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, was taking place in San Francisco. On that event more than six thousand Apple members were gathering together and presenting the newest upcoming products and features. Besides the changes to the UI of the new Mac OS which make it feel similiar to iOS 7+, there are a lot of new features to the iOS platform and the development tools.
I wanna give you a little summary from a developer's perspective.
With HealthKit Apple announced a new API to fetch health information from the user which developers can then integrate in their own apps. This should be useful in a bunch of scenarios, e.g. emergency apps that inform a nearby doctor when the user's pulse and/or heart rate raise above the acceptable limit or all kinds of fitness apps.
What HealthKit is for health the new HomeKit is for home. It's Apple's answer to the upcoming trend home automation / "smart home" using iPhones and iPads.
Besides those, Apple tries to catch up to Android and Windows in terms of multitasking and desktop integration. In iOS 8, developers will be allowed to write Extensions that allow a better synergy between different apps. A good example are new software keyboard layouts that are well known from the Android platform and extensions for the Mobile Safari browser. And even though they didn't announce it officially at the WWDC, Apple seems to work hard on a splitscreen mode for the iPad (comparable to the Windows 8 approach). This would go well with the new extension system. However, it's still not clear whether this will be a feature in the first version of iOS 8 or not.
XCode, Apple's programming tool that is still a big problem for developers since it lacks important features such as a good debugger and especially a good UI designer, gets some love at last. The Interface Builder will now support custom views and will show them as they would appear at runtime – a long awaited feature. But of course, Xcode is still behind across the board compared to the mighty Visual Studio and even Xamarin with MonoDevelop which is much younger than Xcode.
The new programming language – Swift
Well, let's be honest – Apple's decision to use Objective-C as the default programming language was not satisfying at all, neither for beginners nor experts. Besides its confusing syntax that negatively affects the code readability and its weaknesses concerning import cycles, the structure of Objective-C has one major flaw: It's a callow mixture of procedural C code and somehow semi-object-oriented Objective-C with a bit functional programming concepts in form of blocks. Because of that, debugging your code often gives you huge trouble as you may receive stack traces in form of cryptic memory addresses that are often a result – but not the real error itself! Many times I had to try hard not to bite into my keyboard when seeing those stack traces.
It seems, Apple is fully aware of the problems that Objective-C causes (If I had to guess, I'd say that most of their own software isn't even written in that language, but in plain C++), and so they decided to develop a fully new language called Swift. As it seems, all of the weaknesses I described above have been eliminated and long awaited features known from other popular object-oriented programming languages such as C# have been integrated, including strict typing, namespaces, generics and true functional programming tokens. Furthermore, Xcode will contain a sandbox scripting environment for Swift that allows you to see the results of your code in realtime without the need to recompile. Personally, I think this is one of the best new features as it will save much time when creating new code snippets.
I'm rather curious about trying out Swift soon, even though it's no option to translate our own existing source code into the new language.
Every last Wednesday of the month a little recap and outlook. This time: usability update, MobileCamp, Gründerfoyer, blog, 1000 facebook likes.
What's new? - Improving Arundo.
After launching Arundo naturally there was a lot of new input and feedback not yet covered during the beta test. Since developers never sleep we go right on with making Arundo as ready for productivity as possible. We used the great responses to target transparency and general usability first, before adding further features.
After tweaking and fixing a few bugs that were largely caused by the productivity environment Arundo runs in when downloaded from the store (and not the provided test environment it runs in during development), the In-App-Store received a brand-new look.
The Arundo team was once more part of the "Gründerfoyer" of dresden exists with an audience of about 600 listeners attending the presentation of Peter Leibinger the vice chairman of Trumpf GmbH & Co.KG.
Five young Start-ups were pitching their ideas in front of the same audience as well. A two-minute elevator pitch had to be sufficient for Whisp, Nordwerk, Fodjan and others to present their start-up vision. One year ago Arundo was in the same spot, so we know about the challenge this comes with. A few impressions from the pitches and our test stand can be found on our blog as well.
What's next? - Bright Future.
Following your feedback we would like to make the first contact with Arundo clearer, easier and less challenging. The next two main updates will bring less buttons, easier page navigation, an example WorkDesk and event-based tips to get started.
That being done we plan on working on that feature wish list by implementing a key feature asked for by many - it's a surprise, stay tuned!

42. Gründerfoyer - Von den Großen lernen: Hidden Champion
Es war wieder Gründerfoyer an der TU Dresden! In der Vergangenheit haben uns schon Titus Dittmann, Florian Langenscheidt oder Nikita Fahrenholz von Lieferheld zu manchem Schritt in Richtung Entrepreneurship motiviert - nun also Dr.-Ing. E. h. Peter Leibinger, der stellvertretende Vorsitzende vom "Hidden Champion" TRUMPF GmbH & Co. KG, einem familiengeführten Unternehmen mit ca. 10.000 Mitarbeitern weltweit.
Leider verpasste der Vortrag die Möglichkeit, eine interessante persönliche Geschichte des Vortragenden zu erzählen und wurde schnell zur philosophischen Geschichtsstunde über Nachhaltigkeit, Wertesysteme und deren Interpretation und Umsetzung im Unternehmen.
Aber wie Herr Leibinger selbst feststellte, waren die Elevator Pitches der jungen Dresdner Start-Ups der eigentliche Höhepunkt des Abends. Innerhalb von je zwei Minuten präsentierten u.a. Whisp, Nordwerk recyclingDESIGN und WatchOurIdeas ihre Idee und Vision vor dem gesammelten Publikum von ca. 600 Besuchern. Dabei ging es v.a. ökologisch und sozial zu - in diesem Sinne also passend zum Thema Nachhaltigkeit, dem auch Herr Leibinger einige Ausführungen widmete. Er machte allerdings auch deutlich, dass man sich seiner Meinung nach Ökologie und Sozialem erst unter Voraussetzung von ökonomischem Erfolg wirklich widmen könne. Eine interessante These...
Im Anschluss konnte man sich dann bei Bier, Brezel und Brötchen interessanten Gesprächen und neuen Ideen im eigentlichen Foyer widmen. Junge Start-Ups aus Dresden stellten ihre Produkte an verschiedenen Ständen vor, Visitenkarten wurden ausgetauscht, Postkarten eingesammelt und Informationen von bspw. IHK oder Patentinformationszentrum eingeholt.
Auch unser Team war wieder dabei und erfreute sich am regen Interesse an Arundo. Die iPads glühten, es wurde fleißig getestet und hat eine Menge Spaß gemacht. Das Gründerfoyer ist auf jeden Fall eine tolle Veranstaltung für Interessenten und v.a. Studenten, um in lockerer Atmosphäre einen Eindruck vom Gründertum und der lokalen Gründerszene zu bekommen. Wir sind schon gespannt darauf, wer alles beim nächsten Mal, in ca. einem halben Jahr, dabei sein wird!

Nach dem gelungenen 1.Tag war auch der 2.Tag sehr schön. Bevor ich mit der Zusammenfassung der Sessions beginne, möchte ich im Namen von Arundo vielen Dank an die Organisatoren vom Mobile Camp richten!

Ich habe wirklich nicht erwartet, dass es erneut so viele Sessions geben würde, nachdem sich der 1.Tag bereits durch einem beachtlichen Themen-Pool ausgezeichnet hatte.
Google Glass and such... – Sascha Pallenberg
Workshop Mobile Trends – Bernhard Kelz & Dirk Spannaus
Die Session sollte einen offenen Meinungsaustausch über Mobile Trends bieten. Nach einem Rückblick auf Themen des letzten Jahres, wie Quantified-Self, Sensor Data und Big Data, wurde versucht neue Trends aufzuspüren Angefangen bei Entwicklungen von Wearables, Second Screen, Meshed Networks bis hin zu neuen IO-Methoden (Gestensteuerung, haptische Displays) wurde diskutiert und Anwendungsszenarien besprochen. Zusammenfassend darf gesagt werden, dass keine absoluten Neuerungen prognostiziert wurden, jedoch sicher große Fortschritte innerhalb bestehender Trends, bspw. bei Wearables, gemacht werden.

Sehr lecker, es gab Pizza! Unter IT-lern ist die Pizza-Bestellung natürlich ein super Idee.
Photoshopst du noch oder sketchst du schon? – Wadim Suslow
Die Start-Up-Kollegen von Whisp haben in einer Session live ein Music-Play-UI mit Sketch zusammengebastelt. Viele UI-Designer arbeiten noch mit Grafik-Programmen wie Photoshop, obwohl es bereits auch spezialisierte Lösungen wie Sketch für User Interfaces gibt. Das Programm erinnert sehr an den Interface-Builder von Macs, aber der direkte Austausch mit Interface Builder ist leider nicht möglich. Man hat jedoch den Vorteil, dass man gleich alle Koordinaten der erstellten Elemente parat hat und diese somit ohne große Rechnerei umsetzen kann. Ein weiterer Vorteil ist das direkte Mirroring mit Sketch Mirror auf iOS Geräten. Somit kann man sich das Interface direkt auf dem Device anschauen. Fazit: Der Austausch zwischen Designer und Entwickler wird durch Sketch definitiv verbessert. Einen so großen Mehrwert gegenüber dem kostenlosen Inkscape oder Gimp sehe ich allerdings nicht Insbesondere veranschlagt das Tool immerhin einen Preis von 80$. Was mich überzeugen würde, ist eine direkte Click-Prototyp-Funktionalität!
Es war eine sehr gelungene Veranstaltung und ich bin mir sicher, dass wir auch nächstes Jahr wieder dabei sein werden. Es gab viele interessante Informationen und diese Art des Austauschs unter Gleichgesinnten ist wirklich super.
Gestern startete das Mobile Camp 2014 in Dresden – ein Barcamp. Ob Designer, Entwickler, Consultant oder einfach nur interessiert im Bereich Mobile Technologies jeder darf dabei sein. Die 300 möglichen Anmeldungen waren laut  MobileCamp auch komplett ausgeschöpft. Schnell hat man auch ein paar bekannte Gesichter gefunden und das gemeinsame Frühstück war auch sehr angenehm. Ich werde versuchen, jede Session des 1.Tags in ungefähr 4 Sätzen auf den Punkt zu bringen.
Nach der Begrüßung und Sessionplanung ging’s auch direkt los: Die Firefox-Session hatte keine parallele Session – weiß zwar nicht wieso, aber insgesamt war es schon interessant. Insbesondere der Entertainment-Faktor war groß. Mitgenommen habe ich mir, dass Entwickler, die hybrid entwickeln, keinen großen Mehraufwand haben, auch für Firefox OS zu veröffentlichen. Die Vision ist, ein sehr günstiges Smartphone insbesondere für "arme Länder" anbieten zu können.
 Die Sessions
Clean Code – Erik Tittel
Die Session war aus Vortragssicht toll. Da ich selbst erst vor wenigen Jahren angefangen habe zu programmieren, war für mich das Thema, wie man gut lesbare Programme aufbaut sehr interessant – für die Informatiker unter uns sicher redundant. Unterm Strich ist wichtig: Beim Programmieren wird mehr als 75% der Zeit zum Lesen und Verstehen des Codes aufgewendet und besser verständlicher Code erhöht die Produktivität drastisch. Dafür gibt es mehr als 400 Regeln, unter anderem keine Verwendung von magic numbers oder multiple assigning und man sollte sprechbaren Code zu verwenden. Ein gutes Tool zur Erkennung von unlesbarem Code für Java soll Sonarqube sein.
App Marketing – @magdalenab
Es wurde aus eigener Erfahrung und Recherche ein Austausch über App Marketing gesucht und gefunden. Das Publikum war groß und es wurde angeregt über die Wirkung von Keyword-Optimization, Reviews, AdWords, Facebook-Ads und App-Empfehlungsnetzwerken diskutiert sowie ein möglicher Launch-Ablauf vorgestellt. Was sollte festgehalten werden: Es gibt viele Möglichkeiten, die meisten kosten etwas und die Wirkungen sind App- sowie Zielgruppen-abhängig.
POP Animation – Cocoaheads
POP Animation ist ein Open-Framework von Facebook, das u.a. für ihre Paper-App genutzt wurde. POP ist auch für iOS 6 anwendbar und stellt im Wesentlichen Animationen bereit, die auch schon in UIKIT und CoreAnimation zur Verfügung stehen, jedoch alles etwas schicker. Das wichtige ist vor allem, dass man bereits während der Animation mit dem jeweiligen Objekt interagieren kann, was nur etwas umständlich mit CoreAnimation möglich ist.
Psychologie bei Softwareentwicklung – Torsten Weber
Wow…was für eine Session, was für ein Sprechtempo und eigentlich ganz lustig. Wir haben gelernt, dass selbst kleinste Störungen bei der Arbeit bewirken, dass man 8-12 min braucht, um wieder auf volle Leistungsfähigkeit zu kommen. App Monetarisierung mit Newsletter-Leads – Apponsor
Apponsor hat ihr Geschäftsmodell vorgestellt. Sie wollen eine Alternative zur momentanen App-Monetarisierung via In-App-Käufen oder In-App-Advertising anbieten. Grundprinzip ist, dass Nutzer Features freischalten können, indem sie einem Newsletter-Abonnement zustimmen – quasi zahle mit deinem Namen und Mail-Adresse. Apponsor verkauft diese dann an Unternehmen, die ihren Newletter loswerden wollen. Fazit: Interessantes Geschäftsmodell für App-Start-Ups, leider ist die Variante nur für Android verfügbar.
