He trusts Phil and believes in Him, but he has to take a deep breath before he enters the room, and when he walks out, he looks dazed, dissociated. As if he had to disconnect emotionally to be able to cope with what he'd done. This supports the theory that Phil is the devout, charismatic leader and Dan is the sacrificial lamb who has been manipulated into doing his bidding. Phil never shows any hesitation. He gives his life to Him willingly and with excitement. As many have already pointed out, this is clearly not a healthy relationship. You could even call it an abusive one. Phil calls Dan his friend, but shows no warmth or care for him. The only hints of affection we get are the bloody handprint on Dan's chest as he stumbles out from behind the curtain, and the hand holding at the end. He slaps Dan's hand away when he reaches out to touch the slime and chastises him for not asking for permission, implying that Phil is the one in control. Contrast this with Dan taking a moment to tenderly hold Phil's lifeless hand before continuing the ritual at the end of slime. The way he laces his fingers with Phil's during the slime making process and squeezes so tightly that it hurts, as if he knows that it could be the last chance he'll ever get. The gentle way he prepares Phil for the first sacrifice in Potato Prints. It is clear that Dan genuinely loves Phil, but Dan is just a pawn to him. A means to an end. Dan holds Phil's heart in his hand at the end - the symbol of his devotion and love for him, and Phil holds the knife that was used to cut it out - the symbol of Phil's devotion and love for Him.
