Fifty-five-word Story
I watch as he tries to connect 1 to A to 2 to B to…
He stares in hesitation, confused—
Maybe by where the dots went, or
Perhaps what should come next, or
Really, why such a simple, trivial task with numbers and letters—
What? A child’s drawing exercise?—
Could stump his most prized possession.
This story is about a clinical encounter with another patient with dementia taking the trail-making test to assess for his degree of cognitive impairment.
Six-word Stories

This was in reference to a clinical encounter with a patient with dementia and his wife.
The polio didn’t steal her smile.
She is a quadriplegic patient I met with one of the brightest personalities despite all the health obstacles she had to face.
Sometimes, the countdown starts Monday morning.
It is hard, and it only gets tougher. But, I am blessed to have the privilege to train to be a doctor.
