We chat with one of the founders of the grassroots horror film festival to find out what blood-spurting eyeballs can do for Northern talent. BY SAMIA MADWAR

Maybe it’s the way that blood stains snow, or the way the darkness gets in your bones. Whatever it is, in the dead of winter, the North is primed to give you hair-raising shivers. For the past three years, Dead North, a festival showcasing the goriest, creepiest films North of 60, has been hitting the screens every March, when Northerners begin to emerge after that long, dark, freezing season—but haven’t yet shaken it off.

Since its launch, Dead North has grown from four entries to 21, and from exclusively NWT filmmakers to a pan-territorial roster. But Yellowknife-based filmmaker and artist Pablo Saravanja, who’s been involved with the show from the beginning, dreams of Dead North growing even bigger.

As a magazine publisher, we think about stuff like trademark, copyright and intellectual property a little more than most. When Courtney Holmes submitted the “little tree” concept that would eventually become our December/January 2013 cover, we loved it right away:

But we also thought there would be some sort of trademark held over the iconic air freshener. Checking into it, on their website we found a clear and valid explanation for why you can’t use the shape of the air freshener in just about anything.

But then we saw this:

Then again, lawyers make enough money as it is. If you really want to use one of our trademarks, why not ask us first? We have often said yes. Just ask the people behind many of the movies, TV shows and advertising campaigns that have featured our brands.
