Booktopia has The Insatiability of Human Wants, Economics and Aesthetics in Market Society by Regenia Gagnier. Buy a discounted Hardcover of The Insatiability of Human Wants online from Australia's leading online bookstore.
What is the relationship between our conception of humans as producers or creators; as consumers of taste and pleasure; and as creators of value? Combining cultural history, economics, and literary criticism, Regenia Gagnier's new work traces the parallel development of economic and aesthetic theory, offering a shrewd reading of humans as workers and wanters, born of labor and desire. "The Insatiability of Human Wants" begins during a key transitional moment in aesthetic and economic theory, 1871, when both disciplines underwent a turn from production to consumption models. In economics, an emphasis on the theory of value and the social relations between land, labor, and capital gave way to more individualistic models of consumerism. Similarly, in aesthetics, theories of artistic production or creativity soon bowed to models of taste, pleasure, and reception. Using these developments as a point of departure, Gagnier deftly traces the shift in Western thought from models of production to consumption. From its exploration of early market logic and Kantian thought to its look at the aestheticization of homelessness and our own market boom, "The Insatiability of Human Wants" invites us to contemplate alternative interpretations of economics, aesthetics, and history itself.
Emotion in Aesthetics is the first book on aesthetics to provide an extensive theory of emotion; application of the cognitive-emotive theory to aesthetics; analysis of the relationship between aesthetics, metaphor and emotion; a full theory of meaning and its application to aesthetics; discussion of the relationship between aesthetics, music and language in terms of phonetics, phonology and intonation; an analysis of humanistic aesthetics; a well-developed naturalistic theory of ethics as applied to aesthetics and emotion. Stress is placed on the views of contemporary philosophers as well as some of the main historical accounts of emotion in aesthetics. The important recent work on emotion has not hitherto been applied to aesthetics. As a result there is still much confusion in aesthetics about aesthetic emotion and related concepts, such as the expression theory of emotion. The present book has been written to show how the theory can be used to clarify the issue, resulting in a major breakthrough in aesthetics. In addition, the theory presented is valuable in relating aesthetics to ethics and humanism.

MY CHILDHOOD FRIEND by Lydia Davis
Who is this old man walking along looking a little grim with a wool cap on his head? But when I call out to him and he turns around, he doesn’t know me at first, either - this old woman smiling foolishly in her winter coat.
This weekend I am dog sitting. It is love. Mocha is very sweet pooch. She likes laps, heaters, fine wine and algae

I have made a teeny tiny gallery! it's about 5 cms wide by 30cms long by 5 cms high. I painted the floor grey and the walls white. the walls outside are grey
I was thinking of putting it on some wheels and having a tiny moveable gallery!
and I wondered if there was some way I could work out what to put in it, that involved ARR

Erin Answers Natasha Madden's Questions On Love
1. What is love? Do you believe in love/true love? Who/what do you love?
I'm not sure I have an answer for "What is love?". I've been thinking about it for weeks and I don't think I can express what that feeling is and its hundreds of variations/manifestations. I believe in love, I don't know about "true love". What does that even mean? There's no such thing as true love. I know that real love requires nurturing and is a constantly changing and evolving thing. True love sounds like something you're entitled to, something sent from the universe straight to you that you accept with no sense of what actual love requires. It's a fairytale.
I love many things in different ways. I love my best friend & partner.
I love my mum. I love my dogs (RIP Sash), I love my niece, I love the rest of my family (sorry guys, there's a hierarchy here.).
I love music.
I love watching birds. I love waving to Ben & Daisy, the fat alpacas on my route to the train station. I love playing video games. I love singing badly. I love dancing badly for Jo's amusement. I love making noise with my guitar. I love quad skating. I love dreaming. I love road trips. I love rainy days & thunderstorms. I love watching movies in an empty theatre. I love flying home. I love phone calls from my mum. I love that my brother has started sending me pictures of drawings he's done. I love hearing my niece's voice on the phone. I love sitting in bean bags. I love lots of things.
2. Does/can/should love last forever? Similarly, can/should collaborations be long term?
I do think love can last forever. Certain kinds of love are unending. For instance the love I have for my family. I think it just depends on your experiences in life and how they effect how you see love and relationships. My parents have been friends since they were young teens and are still in love. What I've learnt from them is that long lasting love relies heavily on a foundation of friendship, without a doubt. Without friendship there is nothing. I guess because we've grown up with this kind of love, my brother and I have both built our own relationships based on that of our parents. We both found our best friends and built longterm relationships around that friendship. I don't think you can decided from the beginning when a collaboration will end, or decide that it will go on indefinitely. Like any other relationship, I think collaborations should live and die naturally. Any time you have to force the continuation of a relationship it's probably dead already and your just dragging its limp body around behind you.
3. Do you believe in love at first sight?
No. I don't believe in love at first sight. In fact, I've found that people I've absolutely despised on first impression have gone on to be people I am friends with/love/am inspired by. Not sure what that says about me…
4. Is love inclusive or exclusive?
both simultaneously.
5. How do you make relationships work? (Seriously I really want to know, because I have no idea, haha)
I dunno.
