maybe the REAL meta part of Stranger Things is us watching a decade of what could have been a revolutionary female character made even more amazing because she started out as a young girl not even a grown woman yet only to have her story end the way it did and IN-universe the writers self described “self insert” tells a fantasy version of her story incorrectly and through a lens only HE cares about altogether ignoring every thing she’s ever said to him. Yep, Duffers declaring that Mike is their self insert and then saying El’s whole purpose in life was to be the magic of childhood for four BOYS (while one of them also gets to date her?? date the magic of childhood?? wtf??) pretty much checks out. I will be on my death bed talking about how angry I still am about this.
