JAZZ MASTERS | THE ART OF FRANK MORRISON [Part 1 of 3]
(Top To Bottom) B-Kay by Frank Morrison The Night Hawk by Frank Morrison Equinox by Frank Morrison Website: http://morrisongraphics.com | Facebook
I always struggled drawing hands before anyone told me what to do. So here is a HANDy dandy drawing reference to see the steps on an actual hand. There are three big muscles in the palm. The thumb lump is most important because without it you’ll never even get the shape right. Circle up the knuckles and draw bendy lines (red) to connect them. Make sure the fingers go from medium-tall-short-shortest just slightly (index=>pinky finger). Notice the big red squareish shape around the palm-that’s the first thing I do. Note: every infer has 2 knuckles don’t forget the thumb does too…just in a weird way.
HOLY SHIT
I’m re-posting this so it’s on my tumblr and I can reference it as needed, because I am an awful fucking cartoonist, but I live in hope.
WHY DIDN’T I THINK OF THIS
People are talking about a miracle. I’m hearing about a nightmare. It’s hard to be a parent tonight for a lot of us. You tell your kids, “Don’t be a bully.” You tell your kids, “Don’t be a bigot.” You tell your kids, “Do your homework and be prepared.” And then you have this outcome, and you have people putting children to bed tonight, and they’re afraid of breakfast. They’re afraid of, “How do I explain this to my children?” I have Muslim friends who are texting me tonight saying, “Should I leave the country?” I have families of immigrants that are terrified tonight. This was many things. This was a rebellion against the elites, true, it was a complete reinvention of politics and polls, it’s true. But it was also something else. We talk about race, I mean, we’ve talked about everything *but* race tonight. We’ve talked about class, we’ve talked about income, we’ve talked about reason. We haven’t talked about race. This was a whitelash. This was a whitelash against a changing country. It was a whitelash against a black president, in part. And that’s the part where the pain comes. And Donald Trump has a responsibility tonight to come out and reassure people that he *is* going to be the president of the all the people who he insulted and offended and…and brushed aside. Yeah, when you say you want to take your country back, you’ve got a lot of people who feel that we’re not represented well, either. But we don’t want to feel that someone has been elected by throwing away some of us to appeal more deeply to others. So, this is a deeply painful moment tonight. I know it’s not just about race, there’s more going on than that. But race is here too and we’ve got to talk about it.

This was a whitelash.

I knew this country was a joke when y'all mourned the death of a gorilla longer than y'all ever have for a black life taken by the police

Akilah Johnson, a high school sophomore from Washington, D.C., has been picked as the winner of the 2016 Doodle 4 Google contest, the company announced Monday. Her artwork, titled “Afrocentric life,” is featured on the Google home page.
According to Google, she was picked out of 100,000 participants from 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam and D.C. Five national finalists were invited to spend the day at Google Headquarters in California for the award ceremony.
The eighth annual competition called for young artists to create their own Doodle, with the theme “What Makes Me… Me.”
Johnson, 15, decided to honor her black heritage with her Doodle. She drew it using colored pencils, black crayons and Sharpie markers.
My goal with my art was to not only turn heads but souls as well—not only for someone to see it and be amazed by it but also to have them understand and connect with it. My drawing explores childhood themes and then moves into reflections on our society. Everything surrounding the word “Google” depicts my characteristics. Of all the things I chose to include, the six most special to me are the Symbol of Life (the ankh), the African continent, where everything began for me and my ancestors, the Eye of Horus, the word “power” drawn in black, the woman’s fist based on one of my favorite artist’s works, and the D.C. flag—because I’m a Washingtonian at heart and I love my city with everything in me!
I truly adore the art & the artist! The piece is beautiful, colorful, moving & thoughtful. All of the images represented in the piece reflect her depth of character & love of her heritage. Congratulations to you Akilah!
