So, here is something I’ve noticed: Sometimes when I mention my hysterectomy or the fact that I can’t have kids around pro-choice activists, it’s immediately met with eye rolls and defensiveness. Without even knowing what I’m going to say, I’m cast as The Woman Who Can’t Reproduce, enemy to The Woman Who Can Reproduce, who goes around and guilts people for having an abortion. And I get it, the other side has taken ownership of the rhetorical devise of “all those women out there who can’t have babies.” 

Well, I’m taking it back. You see, I suffered a lot longer than I had to because of the way or society views procreation as mandatory. The same attitudes that make it hard for women to get an abortion because of all of those restrictions made it hard for me to get a hysterectomy, and as a result, I lived in debilitating pain for probably five years more than I should have had to. 

Furthermore, I have to live as a woman in this society, I know how hard and often contradictory the demands are. I identify with other women, and I certainly don’t see them as a means to a baby, like the anti-choice movement encourages me to do.

But what’s more, the experiences of women who can’t reproduce are largely erased from our society. Countless scholarly books have been written on motherhood, none have been written about non-reproductive women’s bodies*. The fact is, as a society, we don’t like to think about people who can’t reproduce, especially women who can’t reproduce, unless she is a rhetorical devise that is used in service of some ideological/political point, usually one that hinges around her as some sort of pathetic figure.
