âItâs not hard,â Seamus assured Dean as they squeezed out of their row of seats. âThereâs really nothing to it, the fireplace does all the work.â Seamus had been Flooing on his own basically since he was old enough to talk in full sentences. His mother could apparate, but really didnât care to, and despite her love of Quidditch, wasnât willing to go anywhere near a broom. Their flat was one flight of stairs up, and that was about all the heights she could handle. Thus their dependence on Floo.
âWho says youâre going to be invited back?â he continued, teasing Dean as they got out of the seating area and continued into the shops. Apparently, Dean was going to be quite the demanding guest this week, if he was already expecting return trips!
They popped into the first shop, which seemed to be, for some reason, a strange combination of sunglasses and perfume. It didnât seem like anything Deanâs sisters would be particularly interested in, but then again, heâd thought his suggestion about the broomstick would be a far-and-away hit, until Dean shot it down. âWell. Would they like any of this?âÂ
âYouâre right,â Dean snickered. âI might end up being a really terrible house guest and youâll all never want to see me again. I might just get banned from Ireland altogether. You never know.â
Of course, they both knew that was highly unlikely. But, Dean did know that he was much more excited about visiting Ireland than he was about Seamus visiting him. Any break he got from his sisters was a good break, so far as he was concerned.
Why anyone would be overly interested in sunglasses and perfume was a baffling idea to Dean, but still, it must sell things or it wouldnât be there. He looked around for a few minutes.
âNah. Theyâre a little too young for this stuff. Letâs check out the next shop. We can probably skip the cigarettes and liquor also,â he said with a grin.
seafinniganâ:
âThey do have some in Diagon Alley you can use,â Seamus told Dean, who admittedly may have already known that. âItâs like public transit. I think thereâs even a few in different parts of muggle London.â A thought struck Seamus. âYou have Flooed before, havenât you?â
It was possible heâd never, which was exciting. He wanted to show Dean as many new things as possible this trip, so heâd be thoroughly impressed. He was worried that Dean might be disappointed, might regret agreeing to this trip, which he hated to think about. And Seamus quite liked travelling by Floo, and expected Dean would as well. They did have awfully similar tastes after all.
âWe can go now!â Seamus announced excitedly, rising from his seat. To be honest, heâd never particularly poked around any of the shopping on the ferry, and didnât much care for shopping in the first place, but he was willing to do if Dean was interested. âBut just so you know, if you save your money, we can get them a toy broomstick at the Cup. Itâll work for them, and it really flies!â
âI havenât,â he admitted. After all, heâd never flooed to Seamusâs, and he couldnât think of anywhere else that heâd go that involved the floo network. âIt freaks me out a bit, if Iâm honest, but Iâm game to try.â
He was usually game for new experiences, after all, and this was a very new one. âIâm sure I will get good at it as I go. I canât take the ferry every time I come to Ireland, now can I?â
He got up from the bench to follow Seamus inside the ferry. Just like his father had told him, there was a cafe, a few duty-free shops, and he saw the arcade the Seamus had mentioned.
âI donât think we want to give my sisters the gift of air-borne travel,â he snickered. âMy mother would have fits. And the local A&E would get tired of seeing them very quickly, I think.â
seafinniganâ:
âGreat,â Seamus said happily, glad to hear that Dean had come prepared for swimming. This summer had been intensely hot, and he was sure it was only going to get worse. Not that the river by his house was any huge, giant river or anything, but it would be nice to go down there and splash around a bit.
âThereâs an International Floo Station,â Seamus explained, making sure to drop his voice so they wouldnât be overheard âbut we werenât sure if you had one of those. A magical one, I mean. Thatâs how we got over this morning. But we like taking the ferry, too, when we have the time.â
As if on cue, the ferry started to move, propelling itself from the dock. Seamus eagerly looked out the window to watch it take off, and while he was doing so, his mother found the two of them and told them sheâd be sitting a few rows up, and to find her before they got off the boat. Interruptions finally over, Seamus finally got around to addressing Deanâs last comment.
âOh yeah, I forgot youâve got a different kind. Thatâs good he got it changed.â Seamus had bought things in muggle London before, and knew they had a different currency. It just slipped his mind, he supposed. It was strange, sometimes, going to a school and having a group of friends that pretty much all lived in a different country than him. Sometimes he mentioned things and they had no idea what he was talking about, and likewise with them. It did make for some great holidays, though!
Dean nodded along with Seamusâs discussion of the floo station. It sounded like a really reasonable thing to have. Especially with the UK Wizarding community spread so far apart, sometimes.
âWe donât have a floo at all,â he admitted with a shrug. âIâve told my parents about my eventually learning to apparate, and the Ministry sent us a pamphlet on how to get hooked up to the floo if we want, but we donât have a fireplace, so weâd have to build that and it honestly just seemed like too much effort for everyone, so we arenât going to do it.â
Once he got old enough to apparate it would be a lot easier. Then, there were portkeys and stuff. He didnât really need the floo, realistically.
âSo, once we get out into the water, can we go and find the arcade games? Or we can wander through the duty-free if you want. I bet I can find something for my sisters in there and then I donât have to worry about them at the Cup.â

seafinniganâ:
Seamus was curious where Deanâs father wouldâve gone on a ferry. It mustâve been somewhere for fun; as far as he knew, Deanâs father mostly just worked a stuffy desk job. Talking of fun, though, Seamus wholeheartedly agreed that the two of them were never short on it.
âClass!â he cheered. He was relieved to hear that he wouldnât need to bankroll the whole week â not that he wouldnât have, of course, only it would severely limit the scope of their activities. âWeâve got to save some for the Cup, we can change it at the border. But thereâll be plenty to do in Abbeyfeale, as well.â
The opening of the gate to allow travelers aboard thankfully prevented Seamus from doing something uncouth, like asking Dean exactly how much money his parents had given him, and he excitedly grabbed the edge of Deanâs sleeve to tug him aboard. He directed the two of them up a few flights of stairs, to a bench where they would have a good view.
âWe can go explore in a bit, but youâve got to watch it get underway, itâs great. Talking of water, did you bring your swim trunks? I live by a river. We can go for a swim.â
âI definitely brought a swimsuit, yeah,â Dean nodded. âYouâd mentioned the river before, so I figured we might. Plus, my mum says you should always take a swimsuit on holiday. Seemed like sound advice.â
He followed Seamus up to the bench. He had to admit that it did sound pretty amazing to watch the ferry leave. âHave you taken this a lot? Like, isnât there a better magical way to do this?â
âNot that I mind a ferry,â he quickly added. âI just figure that the wizarding world would have... yâknow... their own way. I like boats.â
Dean liked the water. He liked it a hell of a lot more than learning to ride a bicycle, anyway. Swimming sounded considerably more fun to him. Far less chance of a skinned up knee, in any case.
âIâve already got some Irish money. Dad got it for me at the bank,â Dean said with a shrug. âWe can get more if we need it, though. And Mum went with me to Gringottâs this week to get the wizarding money that weâd need. We should be fairly well set.â
seafinniganâ:
After patiently waiting for Dean to say goodbye to his mother, Seamus lead his friend to the edge of the dock, where they could watch the ferry come in and be among the first to board.
âA little one, yeah,â Seamus answered. âWeâll be on the ferry for about two hours â sorry, I shouldâve told you.â He worried now that a two-hour-long boat ride wouldnât be the best way of starting Deanâs trip; he didnât want his bestfriend to be bored. But him and his mam liked to take the ferry, and she thought it would be better. They werenât sure if Dean had a wizarding indentification, and Seamus mother thought his parents would be more comfortable with a form of travel they were more familiar with.
âTheyâve got some arcade games, too, but usually those are taken by a bunch of snot-nosed little kids,â he reported sadly. Arcade games, though, gave him another thought. âDid you bring any money? Iâve been saving mine up.â
âSounds fun,â Dean offered with a shrug. âMy dad went on the ferry once. He said thereâs duty-free and all sorts. Seems like weâll be able to entertain ourselves,â he snorted. âItâs not like weâve ever had a problem before.â
He nodded enthusiastically to Seamusâs question. âYeah. Iâve got my money. I brought everything I could scrounge, plus my parents gave me some more. They were terrified of me running out since they donât really know how wizarding currency works.â
It was sort of an advantage as far as Dean could tell. His parents tended to over-budget for any wizarding expedition. He figured that theyâd get wise eventually, but it was still working in his favour at the moment.
seafinniganâ:
âYou canât ride a bike?â Seamus interrogated, positively scandalized. âHow have I known you all these years, and didnât know you canât fucking ride a bike?â That would definitely be their project for the week, Seamus decided. Dean would just have to learn, plain and simple, and then he could head back home with a valuable skill under his belt.
âAnd Iâm not going to kill myself! Iâm good, actually!â He defended, realizing a bit belatedly that heâd been insulted. From someone who couldnât even ride a bike, no less!
But, as the bigger man, Seamus was willing to let bygones be bygones. That and, he was just as eager to get back to his home as Dean was. The ferry was pulling up to the station as he and Dean spoke, so be stepped back to his mother and told her and Mrs. Thomas that he and Dean were going to board. She was alright with it, so he turned happily to Dean.
âAre you ready to get on, then?â
âJust never learned,â Dean shrugged. âNot in my skill set, like.â
He had a feeling that he was about to be taught to ride a bike, and that it was going to be a nightmare. âAnd I donât think Iâm cut out for it, if Iâm honest.â
Seamus probably was good at riding a bike. Particularly on ramps. It suited his adrenaline junkie lifestyle and sounded like the sort of thing he would do. âI was always too busy with football to worry about bikes.â
He gave his mother a hug and a kiss while pretending that he was annoyed at the prospect. He actually didnât mind, but he figured that he was supposed to. So, he rolled his eyes and sighed a bit dramatically before turning to follow Seamus towards the ferry.
âIs it true that thereâs a cafe on the boat?â he asked, as they headed off. Seamusâs mum was generally cool, and allowed the boys to walk ahead a little bit.
seafinniganâ:
Seamus nodded politely along with Deanâs comment, but inwardly, he had trouble imagining anyone who didnât care about Quidditch. Especially this year, when Ireland had made it into the World Cup! Well, maybe it was just because theyâd never seen a match in person. That had to be it.
He was thrilled to hear that Dean was already planning on Seamus making a trip to visit him in return, and he hoped that now that they were older, their mothers would let them spend more time in the summers at each otherâs houses. Summers could get boring for Seamus, especially the further he drifted from his old muggle friends, which seemed to get worse every year he was away at Hogwarts.
But who cared about that now that he had his best friend coming to stay with him?
To answer Deanâs question, Seamus looked up towards the station clock, which let him know that Dean and his mother had arranged just in the nick of time.
âShould be any minute now,â he informed his friend, and figured they could kill time by continuing their planning. âIâll take you to the fish monger as well, theyâre great. And we can have dinner at our favorite pub. And go to the music shop. Oh! And some of us have some ramps build for our bikes.â
Truth be told, Dean had his doubts as to how great a fish monger could be. However, he was sure that if Seamus said that they were great, then they were. Besides, it was an Irish fish monger, wasnât it? Maybe they had something different there.
âMusic shop sounds good. And bikes. I mean, I canât ride, but Iâm more than happy to watch you risk your life on a ramp,â he sniggered. âEspecially if itâs for my entertainment.âÂ
He was always up for pub grub. Patricularly if the chips were good. He could live on chips, he was pretty sure. To be honest, they didnât even have to be all that good.
âBrilliant,â he said, letting his eyes follow Seamusâs towards the station clock. âLetâs go. I canât wait to see Ireland, finally.â
seafinniganâ:
Seamus was pleased to hear that Dean was finally entering the 20th century, so to speak. He hadnât thought muggle houses could even get the Daily Prophet, but after Dean said it, he realized that they must be able to, if they could get owl post and all.
He was glad to see Dean was caught up on the extremely important situation, and proud to hear that his analysis was dead-on. It was hardly a surprise, though, Seamus wouldnât go and be friends with an idiot, especially on a subject as holy as Quidditch.Â
âWeâll have to pick your sisters out something at the Cup,â Seamus promised, as they walked over to his mother. Heâd met Deanâs sisters on a few occasions, and was a lot more amused by them than he suspected Dean could be at times. Of course, he was smart enough to realize that that was probably because he was an only child, and sisters, therefore, were an exciting novelty.
As soon as they were able to slightly peel away from their mothers, they did so, and Seamus set about answering Deanâs rapid-fire questions.Â
âSure,â he started out with. âItâs not a very big town or anything, so it wonât take much to see it all. Itâs not like London or anything.â It wasnât like Seamus cared for London much, or anything. It was loud and busy and different. But he couldnât deny it was impressive and all that that Dean lived in such big town. He hoped Dean wouldnât be disappointed by how little there was to do in his town, by comparison.Â
âAnd itâs not a whole house or anything,â he continued, figuring now was as good as any time to set Deanâs expectations right. âItâs just a flat. Kind of a small one. But we live right in the middle of town. You can see my old school if you want!â
âOh, I have already been given instructions to pick them out something brilliant,â Dean rolled his eyes. Getting a week out of school, but also without sisters was certainly a bonus in his mind. âI donât have the heart to tell them itâll all be quidditch stuff that wonât mean anything to them, really.â
âYeah, we can go and see your old school,â he agreed. âThat sounds excellent. I havenât ever shown you mine, but I can do next time youâre in London.â
It just always seemed as if they found so much else to do when they were in London, and going on tours of schools didnât really seem that riveting. But, he realized that he really wanted to see Seamusâs old school. It sounded like fun.
Of course, the good mood he was in about this whole trip, everything sounded like fun. He couldnât wait. âWhen do we leave?â he asked, looking around the station.

Seamus turned when he heard his name called out, and the roar of excitement he let out when he saw his best friend was a lot less distinctive words as it was incomprehensible joy. He ran to meet Dean halfway across the station, despite quite a few travelers telling him to knock off the running, and immediately launched into Quidditch talk the moment he got their, without even stopping to say hello.
âDid you read the newspaper clippings I sent you?â Seamus interrogated. As antsy as heâd been waiting for the Cup, he couldnât imagine how much worse it mustâve been for Dean, who couldnât listen to matches on the wireless, or even read about the sport in the newspaper.Â
âTheyâve pulled Ryan at the last minute,â he continued, without so much as waiting for Deanâs response. âAnd brought in Mullet instead. Now, sheâs not bad, but she was out most of last season on an injury, and someâve said her elbow didnât heal completely right. Hi, Mrs. Thomas,â he greeted politely, when Deanâs mother had caught up with the pair. âWe should go talk to me mam, she wanted to speak to you before we left.â
âI did. Finally, I just took out a subscription to the Prophet myself so that I wouldnât miss anything else,â he said with a grin. âBesides, my sisters are obsessed with the idea that we get a newspaper delivered by an owl.â
He nodded along with Seamusâs assessment of the Irish teamâs decision. âI canât believe they pulled Ryan, to be honest. I mean, Mullet is a fair choice, but thereâs a chance that her armâs going to be well finished after this. If I were her, I wouldnât do this for anything less than the world cup, thatâs for sure.âÂ
He couldnât blame Mullet for thinking that it was worthwhile to risk jeopardizing an entire career to wear her countryâs kit. Heâd do it.Â
Deanâs mum greeted Seamus warmly before following him over to talk with Mrs. Finnigan. They exchanged parental pleasantries and compared notes on the itinerary. âSo, when we get to Ireland, do I get to see your whole town and whatever?â he asked Seamus while their mothers chatted. âIâm excited to see it. Canât wait to see your house either.â He just hoped everything was in order with the parents. He couldnât wait for this trip. It was definitely the most exciting thing heâd ever done.
@artandbertiebottsâ
Without exaggeration, the Quidditch World Cup was going to be the single biggest, most important event of Seamusâ entire life. His mother had surprised him tickets when heâd arrived home from Hogwarts at the end of the previous school year, and heâd been buzzing with excitement ever since. She didnât just have tickets for them, either, but for his best friend Dean as well. The wait was just about killing him!
Heâd tried begging his mother to let them arrive early, but sheâd insisted that they couldnât show up to the World Cup six weeks ahead of time, and that theyâd be arriving plenty early anyway, and that he could kill time, if he was so bored, by doing his summer homework. Seamus did not care for that answer.
The compromise that theyâd made, which was almost as exciting as the Quidditch World Cup itself, was for Dean to come and stay with them for about a week before they headed off to the World Cup. Seamus had visited Deanâs house before, when they were in London, but Dean had never seen his. He was extremely thrilled, a bit nervous, and full of brilliant ideas of all the fun they could have during this momentous occasion.
Finally, after completing all of his homework, cleaning his bedroom (three full times before his mother would approve), and listening to about a dozen lectures of how he needed to be a good host, Seamus and his mother were officially waiting at the ferry station in Liverpool for Dean and his family, who he believed were arriving by train. Seamus was alternating between sitting on the bench, bouncing his leg anxiously and pacing the station, looking for a glimpse of his best friend. Any minute now, he was positive!
Dean had been counting down the days for a while, now. Heâd marked them off on a hand-made calendar in his bedroom, explained quidditch over and over again to his sisters -- who were fully exhausted of the conversation, honestly-- and confirmed (and reconfirmed) the details with his mother and stepfather approximately a hundred times.Â
But, finally, the day was here. They were on their way to the ferry landing to meet Seamus and head to Ireland for an extended visit until they left for the World Cup.Â
Heâd never seen Seamusâs house, but he couldnât wait to. He was sure that it was going to be the coolest thing. Seamus always made Ireland sound super spectacular when they talked about it, and he couldnât wait to see it for himself. He spied Seamus from across the station and raised a hand as he called out. âShay! Over here!âÂ
Was he running? Probably. But who cared? He hadnât seen his best friend in weeks, and he was ecstatic about it.

Dean Thomas and Seamus Finnigan
Since Dean could not return to Hogwarts for his final year, the two did not see each other for some time, and they missed each other greatly. When Dean eventually did return to Hogwarts in 1998 to fight in the final battle, Seamus was ecstatic to see him, and ran to hug him.
