Been re-reading my copy of Sherlock Holmes, and I never noticed how little Watson actually speaks in the text. Other than a couple questions and a few equivalents of ‘oh my!’, the main way we hear his thoughts are through his narration. Now I know this probably because ACD had a limited amount of words, and watson dialogue wouldn't be as interesting to the readers- But I like the idea of 'WORD FAMOUS DETECTIVE and his hypeman that he brings along’. You never hear a peep out of that guy, he just stands menacingly in the background until Holmes says something like “ah yes. He was 6ft tall.” and he goes “ AHH FUCK YEAH, THATS MY FUCKING BITCH I LOVE YOU YOU’RE THE SMARETEST PEROSN IN THE WORLD I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU GOT THAT LETSS A FUCKING GOOOOOOO!!!!!!” and then falls silent again.
sherlock holmes is the type of guy to sacrifice himself for some just cause instead of communicating

listen. listen to me. holmes is a kind of an anti-religious figure.
still with me? He has some clear parallels with Jesus Christ, dying and coming back to life, and he's seen almost as a saint who helps people in unjust situations when others won't. And yet Holmes kind of the opposite of Christ. He doesn't die again after his resurrection, for one. But, in addition, he's not kind and selfless like a godly figure 'ought' to be.
And yet when Holmes decides to “fake” his death at reichenbach he does so out of a sense of justice; only so he'd be able to end an empire of crime. He's ready to die before he thinks of how to survive. I would argue that holmes sees himself as a martyr. not consciously, but that is how he operates. he's ready to get hurt and even die if it means justice will prevail and it would prevent further suffering. On the other hand, he sees himself as a purely selfish individual who is able to simply leave his life behind for the “greater good”. The way other people in the canon view holmes v. how he views himself are two quite drastic sides of the same coin. How should a man whose identity is only a symbol of justice and good come back from the heavens? he jumps down into the rocky depths.
