what a fun little show. s1 starts off weaker than the rest (and by weak, i mean a 6.6/10) but by episode 4 the quality jumps SO FAR up, and its well on the level of the other schurverse shows for all of season 2.
the fact it was on peacock is truly the Achilles heel of this show. seriously, who the fuck had peacock in 2022? but it really is a shame the series didnt continue for at least season 3. that cliffhanger was CRAZY and im so mad we didnt get to see the comedy gold that could come from nathan/peggy/deirdre, and reagan/nelson/josh
i loved it a lot. nathan and reagan have a beautiful friendship, and terry is a legendary schurverse character. sigh...
One of the reasons that I think Ben and Leslie are so special to me is that the show had a such a strong, ambitious female character like Leslie at the helm and decided to give her an equally strong, ambitious love interest in Ben. In a lot of ways I think Ben is sort of a revolutionary kind of love interest for a character like Leslie and I adore them together
Like there’s a version of a show like this where Leslie ends up alone (in the typical “strong independent women doesn’t need a man” fashion) bc she can’t find a partner that won’t slow her down or inhibit her individualism. There’s also a version where she ends up with a Dave type guy: someone kind and sweet but rather simple compared to her, who loves her and supports her dreams but never fully understand them, who can cheer her on from the sidelines but couldn’t ever really stand beside her, who admires her big ambitions but has none of his own
But parks didn’t do that. They knew they didn’t need to make Leslie permanently single in order for her to retain her power and individualism and they didn’t have her end up with some kind of simpleton in order to give her a husband who wasn’t intimidated by her ambition or success. They did something that shouldn’t be as rare or feel as revolutionary as it kind of is: in Ben they gave her a true partner, an equal
Ben is as strong willed and ambitious as she is. He loves Leslie as fiercely as she loves him, but they also *understand* each other just as well. He supports her and her goals as her bf/husband, but he’s also there beside her as her partner as she works for them and she does the same for him
In these two, parks gave us a couple who love each other fiercely, who come together to become even stronger, more sure versions of themselves, grounded by the partnership they build together. Neither one of them gives up their strength or individual ambitions or their complexity as a character when they’re together. In fact, they’re more powerful and ambitious as a team than they were apart, constantly encouraging each other and pushing the other towards the things they want
Ben and Leslie are a couple, but even before that, they’re a *team* and I just adore them for it
i love b99 a lot but man that last season... it has its moments, but it feels so insane tonally because of the environment of its release. it's copaganda that has just realised it's copaganda and feels really bad about being copaganda but doesn't know what to do about it, and its self awareness makes the show feel so much Worse.
there are probably some insane analyses you could make about that season vs the rest of the show. having one character quit the force as a moral stance but the rest stay on is so Interesting. it was always so interesting to look at, being a Leftist Cop Show, but s8 specifically is a WOKE Cop show and it has no idea what to do about it

sorry to post like it's 2011 but it's crazy how parks and rec speedran ben and leslie to a mutually acknowledged crush in half a season but still made it play like the show was taking its time, and like the romance was mostly developing in subtext, when that wasn't even really true. it's actually just that they traced the progress of ben and leslie's relationship through the way they treat each other instead of relying only on the way they talk about each other. which should not be rare but is
currently watching 'the office' for the first time and i'm noticing a pattern with mike schur's work - parks & rec, the office, the good place (only naming shows i've watched) - where the throughline seems to be to simply care more. the characters he creates are such huge triers. all they do is care so deeply and openly about their friends and their passions and they try so fucking hard. it's like they all inherently believe in the goodness of others and genuinely want to make things better - whether that be the afterlife, their job, their town, their friends lives, etc. it's such beautiful storytelling and honestly revolutionary especially now when society is so deeply apathetic and almost everything is taken in bad faith.
There’s some kind of weirdly beautiful parallel between the ways that Leslie and Ben are both used to being the second choice in different ways (particularly in relation to Ann and Chris) but they’re always each others first choice
Like we get to see Leslie’s side of it play out in season 2 with mark literally choosing Ann after never really showing an interest in Leslie after all her years of pining
And then when Ben’s introduced its clear that he’s *very* used to people in the towns they visit preferring to deal with the charmingly upbeat Chris over ‘mean Ben’ the hardass
But then Leslie meets Ben and, instead of pushing him aside and deferring to Chris on these issues, she’s hounding *him* for meetings and seeking *him* out to work with her on the harvest fest. I like to think that she saw something in him (as the one in her department who’s used to doing all of the hard work) and decided that he was the one she wanted to work with
And Ben meets Leslie and suddenly he’s so enamored by her that he doesn’t even register Ann’s presence when he’s around the two of them. It was always Leslie who he was drawn to in Pawnee, who made him want to stay, and who made it a home for him even before they got together
Sometimes it’s the little things that get me with these two 💕 Like they’re both *exactly* what the other one needs right from the beginning and watching them slot into place beside each other like puzzle pieces is always one of the best parts of my parks rewatches
the whole "why are Gayle and Garry married" bit on Parks and Rec was a lot more mean-spirited than I remembered, watching those clips again
like. they have similar interests and values, they're highly compatible, and Garry is clearly an intelligent, kind, fun person
the whole joke, really, relies on the assumption that conventionally attractive people must be with other conventionally attractive people for it to "make sense"
and yes, it's buried in layers of meta and "well, you're SUPPOSED to think the other characters are being shallow! that's the joke! Garry is clearly a great guy and they're all assholes hung up on looks and anxiety-induced clumsiness!" but at the end of the day, I feel like the audience is still firmly meant to be on the side of Believing It Doesn't Make Sense
Sometimes I think about the fact that there was a whole episode of parks and rec where Ben and Leslie had to miss his birthday party so she could filibuster the city council meeting to protect voting rights in Pawnee
And instead of doing what most shows would do and making the central conflict a whole thing about Ben being mad about having to miss his party and Leslie having to make it up to him etc - he literally never even thinks to question her on it and is in complete agreement with her that protecting voting rights is more important than a bday party and has to be their top priority no matter how inconvenient it is for them (plus he also spends most of the filibuster drooling over how hot and generally awesome his wife is filibustering in her roller skates)
It’s just so refreshing to see a show’s main couple be so supportive of each other and on the same page rather than creating pointless conflicts where they’re both irrationally mad at each other over nothing - its not like they never have disagreements or anything but it’s always Leslie and Ben against the world on this show and I’ll always love that

rewatching parks and rec and i think it's one of the rare sitcoms that only gets stronger as it goes on.
i'm on season 6 now and it's incredible how much fun i'm still having. i think the fact it has very little cast changes definitely helps it (thinking about not seeing ann and chris as regulars after this hurts...)
i truly love every member of the cast and have nothing but praise for every one of them and their development fills me with so much love... and i LOVE that donna gets more screentime from s6 onwards.
i feel like she was super unexplored and love her and tom's dynamic a lot. i mean it makes sense, she was originally a bg character, but i feel like the lack of black female characters are one of the weak points in schurverse shows. donna is a very lovely mark against that weakness. (i <3 simone in tgp too)
