These past two days, I've received messages asking how I feel as an Armenian toward israel recognizing the Armenian Genocide. I am not so naive as to think israel's ever-dormant conscience suddenly woke up one day and, after decades of actively denying the Armenian Genocide and using its lobbies to prevent U.S. recognition, decided to finally face the truth and "do the right thing". Anyone who is even the least bit aware of global politics can clearly see israel's negative stance toward Armenia and Armenians. Look at how the Armenian Quarter of Jerusalem is being treated. israelis defecate and spit at the doors of Armenian churches with no punishment. Only three years ago, israel was actively arming and supporting azerbaijan in its policies of ethnic cleansing in Artsakh. It is clear that israel's recognition of the Armenian Genocide has absolutely nothing to do with Armenians. Nor does it have anything to do with justice or historical truth. So why did they recognize the Armenian Genocide, and why especially now? From what I can see, the first reason is the weaponization of the Armenian Genocide against turkey. It's a common practice; whenever any government (israel has done this before, and so has the U.S.) wants to oppose turkey for one reason or another, the Armenian question is always the first weapon used. The second reason might be the fact that israel wants its own share of the tripp. As you might know, the current self-proclaimed "Armenian" government has sold some of our land to the U.S. under the pretense of "peace and prosperity". The transit routes would pass dangerously close to the Iranian border. I don't think I need to explain why israel would want to have a presence here. How do I feel about it? Not surprised, yet livid all the same. The fact that the country actively involved in committing a genocide is sticking its filthy hands in my people's wounds and using the blood to write its own agenda can evoke only one emotion— rage.
it’s when geopolitical chicanery like this pops up that i get particularly furious at a subsection of Armenians who fall into the trap of glorifying the nation of Israel as an exemplary precedent for a previously oppressed nation who fought for its right of self determination and is now determining world politics along with the rest of the global superpowers.
israel was the primary military supplier of azerbaijan during the 44-day war in 2020. israel is desecrating the centuries-long presence of armenians in its capital in a truly mortifying, absolutely shameless way. the armenians who claim that israel is an exemplary nation for what Armenia should be are failing to understand that, just like how the government of israel represents only its most extremist demographics, the government of Armenia would further devolve into even more of a fucking caricature than it is now.
if even the clownish PM of the current party in power could recognize that a statement of recognition from the israeli government means close to nothing, then it’s quite fucking clear what your stance as an Armenian should be on this.

some contractions that (western) armenians* do:
ես -> 'ս
ինչ -> 'չ ('նչ when preceded immediately by a vowel w/o pauses)
հոս/հոն -> 'ոս/'ոն (initial h is dropped frequently)
որովհետեւ -> որտեւ / որով
հիմայ -> 'մա
այսօր -> 'սսօր
այստեղէն -> սստեղէն
աս(ի) -> սս(ի) [սս being clitic]
օրինակ -> օրնակ
*the western armenian in question: me
some additions, if i may:
մէկ հատ > մէքատ
բան մը > բամմը
ըսաւ > ՚սաւ
ծամել > ծամմել
and probably a lot more that aren’t coming to mind right now
in armenia, gay marriage is illegal, openly gay men are banned from joining the military, gay couples are not allowed to adopt, and there is no law prohibiting discrimination based on sexual/romantic orientation. even though homosexuality has been legal (only) since 2004, it remains taboo and misunderstood. homophobia and transphobia are rampant.

armenia has been ranked 47th out of 49 european countries for lgbt rights.
please consider donating to pink armenia if you can. happy pride month especially to my fellow lgbt armenians! <3
equalityarmenia.org and galasla.org are other resources for lgbt armenians.
I am a queer Armenian. This realization had to come to me in secret, shameful privacy, because i knew neither my family nor my community at large would tolerate me. Thousands of others like me have to go through life being treated like some kind of traitor to the nation for something they have no control over.
If you happen to be a queer Armenian reading this: Nothing about your sexual orientation or gender identity has a thing to do with your Armenian ethnicity. You can embrace both — it is a beautiful thing to embrace both! Love being Armenian and love being queer at the same time! It isn’t “Westernization”, it isn’t against god (if that matters to you), you are betraying no one.
To all the rest, friends and otherwise: please consider donating if you can. The work these organizations do is invaluable, and I hope through them, a future can be achieved where no Armenian child feels fear first and foremost when they discover they aren’t straight and/or cis, and where Armenian society can understand that LGBTQ+ Armenians have always existed and will always exist. if donating isn’t an option, please reblog.

Pulpulaks in Armenia
Usually built with or in stone and approximately one meter tall, the typical Armenian water fountain usually provides cold mountain spring water in Armenia.
It is called a Pulpulak which relates to the murmuring of water from the water source. Pulpulak is a source of pride in Armenia and are unique to anything you’ll find anywhere else in the world.
Pulpulaks are almost everywhere in Armenia and only 30 years ago, it was very strange for Armenians to understand the idea of “buying water” because water is something that has always been ever-flowing and free in the country.
Pulpulaks became more popular at the beginning of the 20th-century when society took to its ancestors and started to install them and celebrate the gift of water.
The fountains don’t solely have a mission to supply water to the residents but they are also built to honor someone who passed or did something remarkable.
When you see these pulpulaks, you often have to bow down to sip the water and it is a way of paying respects to the deceased person.

It’s been aaaagessss since I’ve done one of these so thanks for the tag :)
Last song: technically I was last listening to my playlist of Ghibli songs and I think it was something from The Wind Rises. I’ve also been playing the Bridge Over Troubled Water album on repeat recently.
Currently watching: honestly the last thing I was watching was Jacksepticeye’s playthrough of Skate 4 with my husband haha
Current obsession: Tie between Project Hail Mary and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Can you tell I like sci fi?
Currently reading: does the tertiary phase of Hitchhiker’s radio series count as reading? Not really but I’m using it lol
Currently working on: I’m currently going through the process of titrating down and switching my OCD medication from Zoloft to Prozac so this month I’m a little out of whack. I will be baking my dad a Father’s Day cake this weekend though, so that’s something. I also have been working off-and-on on a Forthur fanfic but idk when that’ll finally happen.
I’ll tag @itookthetardis2liveaid @lifeisgrooovy @thespiralstaircaseoftime @xofflow @juiatomou @pickled-cactus @h4zelnut-coffee54 @a-side-of-fordthur @menacereynolds @your-gay-tour-guide

currently reading the yellow house by martin gayford. my sister got me this book from the netherlands a while ago, and i did not expect to like it as much as i do. nothing crazy or especially profound is happening, it’s just interesting to see the artistic techniques and philosophies of van gogh and gaugin contrasted with one another, and the description of life in southern france is pleasantly hale to read
currently working on several projects for uni, the phm fic i mentioned above, as well as my ongoing personal writing project
ten is a lot to nominate for me too (and prev tagged most of my friends already haha), so… @decafblackberrymora @vardmard your turn!

@arevmdianarakil

(Some of) the professions that women could have in medieval Armenia
1. Վարձակ - Vardzak
An actress, singer and dancer in ancient and medieval Armenian theatre. Vardzak performed either naked or semi-naked.
2. Լալկան կանայք - Mournful women
These women sang sorrowful songs during burial ceremonies and were paid for it. They also wrote the songs. The lead singer was known as Եղերամայր 'Yegheramayr'. The Armenian medieval poet Grigor Narekatsi wrote that he had learned tear-inducing lines from them. This profession was practised up until the 19th century.
3. Դյութ (Dyut)֊ Witch/Warlock
Dyut could be anyone who was literate, including both women and men. They were considered to be those who used different substances and objects, such as flour, stones, water and sand.
4. Թովիչ (tovich) - Enchanter
These women were said to be able to cure illnesses through their sweet and enchanting speech. They "cured" rib pain by rubbing a sword on the patient's ribs, and they "cured" jaundice by slapping the patient without warning to make the illness run away.
Armenian poets + tumblr posts.
