Akira’s parents, contrary to what you might expect given the fact they sent him away to live with Sojiro, are actually not as bad as they could have been.
Whilst it’s true they weren’t exactly model parents, they weren’t actively abusive, nor were they neglectful, at least not intentionally. His mother was a high class business woman, and his father designed sports goods. They married young, and had Akria when they were still only in their early twenties. Long before they were actually prepared to raise a child.
They weren’t cruel to him by any respect. When they were around they were caring but their youth led to an unforeseen amount of naivety. They weren’t entirely sure how to raise a child, and it showed. They’re nice people, and that kindness was clearly inherited by Akira, but their inexperience & constant needs to be away from the house led to Akira being left alone or in the care of neighbors or family friends more often than not, in turn making Akira feeling somewhat distant from his parents.
This disconnect from his parents led Akira to have a slight lack of social skills. He struggled in school initially and whilst his mother did try to be there for him as much as she could, but, once again, she wasn’t really ready to raise a child yet, so the amount of attention he received was, at best, minimal, meaning that his grades were average at the best of time.
He actually feels a bit more comfortable interacting with young adults than people of his own age, because he spent a lot of his youth around babysitters who weren’t exactly family, and therefore more like friends than anything else.
Akira has mixed opinions on his parents because after living in Sojiro’s care for a year and meeting the people he did he had to learn the hard way that the environment he had been raised in up until now was actively a detriment to him and this new one he’d found himself in was, without a doubt, more healthy for him.
Because of this, Akira actually struggles a lot with the idea of returning to his parents because he’s realized he’s better off at Leblanc with Sojiro, feeling closer to Boss than he did his own father, and to some extent he feels guilty because, again, his mother and father were not actively cruel or mean towards him, they were good people on the rare occasion they were able to be around, they were just unintentionally neglectful, and Akira hasn’t totally come to terms with the fact he might have been growing up in a bad environment.
