Spending the entire day crying and then crying yourself to sleep definitely wasnβt healthy. You couldnβt believe he had actually played you. The worst part was that he was the one who wanted you first. Looking back on it now, the whole thing felt ridiculous.
It had been three days since then, and you had barely left your bed. Well, aside from grabbing the food you ordered through DoorDash, brushing your teeth, and showering every now and then. Surprisingly, you were still managing the bare minimum.
You hadnβt meant to ignore Saeβs messages, either. Heβd been texting you almost every day, asking if you were free or checking in to see how you were doing. But you never replied and you felt guilty about it.
Sae was your best friend. The last thing you wanted was for him to worry. You sat curled up on the couch, a box of Wingstop balanced on your lap as some random movie played on the television. Your eyes were puffy, your head hurt, and you felt exhausted despite doing absolutely nothing for the past three days.
Watching a movie seemed like the best way to distract yourself. Anything was better than staring at your phone and hoping for a message that wasnβt coming.
A part of you still wanted to believe there had been some mistake. Maybe heβd explain. Maybe heβd apologize. Maybe heβd tell you there was a reason. But deep down, you already knew none of that was going to happen.
God. If only you hadnβt been stupid enough to fall for him so easily.
βPleaseβ¦ my loveβ¦β
You stared blankly at the television. Of course there was romance in this movie. Your chest tightened as the couple on screen held each other.
βYou know I didnβt mean to hurt you,β the actor said. βMy heart belongs to you. Only you.β
Immediately, your vision blurred. Before you even realized it, tears were rolling down your cheeks. Stupid movie. You grabbed the remote and shut the television off. Sniffling, you pulled the blanket over your head and curled into yourself. The faint scent lingering on the fabric only made your chest ache more.
You squeezed your eyes shut. Maybe if you slept, you wouldnβt have to think about it. Just as you started drifting off, a loud knock echoed through the apartment. You nearly jumped out of your skin.
βDelivery!β Another knock followed.
You frowned. Delivery? You hadnβt ordered anything. Confused, you pushed yourself off the couch and shuffled toward the door. Maybe one of the neighbors had gotten the wrong apartment number.
You unlocked the door and pulled it open. βHi, sorry, I think you have the wrongββ Your words died in your throat. Standing in front of you was a pink-haired man who looked one inconvenience away from committing a felony.
βSae?β For a moment, you genuinely thought he was the delivery driver.
Sae stared at you. Then he pinched the bridge of his nose. βFor fuckβs sake.β Without waiting for permission, he stepped past you and into the apartment . βWhy havenβt you been replying to me?β he asked. βIβve been texting you for three days. You usually spam my phone so much that I have to mute you.β
You stared at him. Of course. Of course heβd show up. Because despite how cold he liked to act, Sae was always there when it mattered. You looked down at your feet. βIβm sorry,β you mumbled. βIβve just been dealing with something.β
Saeβs irritation immediately faded. He took one look at your face and frowned. Honestly, you looked terrible. βYou look like shit,β he said bluntly.
You laughed weakly. βThanks.β
βNo, seriously. What happened?β
You hesitated for a moment. Trying to explain it out loud somehow made everything feel more real. Slowly, you walked back toward the couch and sat down. Sae followed and sat across from you.
You stared at your hands. βItβs justβ¦β You swallowed. βSomething happened with a guy.β
Sae blinked. βA guy?β
And that was all it took because he tears came back instantly and your shoulders shook. βHe blocked me, Sae.β Your voice cracked. βHe led me on and then just disappeared. Like I didnβt matter at all.β You wiped furiously at your eyes. βHe made me think he liked me,β you whispered. βI thought he actually felt the same way when we first had sex.β
Sae looked completely lost, not because he didnβt care. Because he genuinely had no idea what people were supposed to do in situations like this. Still, seeing you cry like that made something twist uncomfortably in his chest. βY/nβ¦β
You grabbed the front of his shirt which caused him to freeze. βI really liked him.β
Then, awkwardly, he wrapped his arms around you. The hug was stiff⦠awkward⦠and completely unnatural. But it was sincere.
βThere,β he muttered. βSee? Human comfort.β
You let out a broken laugh before immediately crying harder. βThat was not comforting.β
βIt was my best attemptβ¦β He muttered.
Mascara stained the front of his white shirt and Sae looked down, looked away, then looked down again. He was trying very hard not to think about how expensive the shirt was. It wasnβt important! Definitely not important. Not like it had cost over two hundred dollars.
Eventually, you pulled away. The moment you noticed the stain, your eyes widened. βOh my God.β You covered your mouth. βSae, Iβm so sorry.β And somehow you started crying again.
Sae groaned. How did people deal with this? He reached forward and grabbed your cheeks. βHey.β
βLook at me.β He said.
You sniffled.
βStop crying over a guy who looks like heβs fucked half the population.β
You blinked. βWhat?β
βSeriously.β Sae leaned back. βHe looks exactly like the type.β
For a second, you just stared at him. Then an ugly laugh escaped your mouth. It was ridiculous. Completely ridiculous. But somehow his joke worked.
Seeing you laugh, even a little, made Sae relax. βGood,β he said. βNow get dressed.β
You frowned. βWhat?β
βWeβre leaving.β He looked at his watch.
βSae, I donβt reallyββ
βWeβre leaving.β He interrupted. His tone left no room for argument. βIβm meeting Rin later.β He stood up and pointed toward your room. βYouβre coming with me.β
You groaned. βSaeβ¦β
βNo.β He said immediately.
βButββ
βNo.β He said again.
You stared at him. ββ¦Youβre really not giving me a choice, are you?β
βNope.β Sae shoved his hands into his pockets.βNow go get dressed before I drag you out looking like that.β
You rolled your eyes. Maybe getting out of the apartment wouldnβt be the worst thing in the world. You nodded and pushed yourself off the couch. Sae was right. Sitting around crying wasnβt going to fix anything. Besides, why were you wasting tears on a guy who had practically chased after you first?
The thought still hurt, but it was easier to be annoyed than heartbroken. You headed to your room and shut the door behind you. For the first few minutes, you simply stared at your reflection in the mirror.
You looked awful. Your eyes were puffy from crying. Your hair was a mess. Even your skin looked dull. For a moment, you considered changing your mind and crawling right back into bed. But Sae was waiting. So instead, you forced yourself to get ready.
It took longer than usual. Not because you couldnβt find anything to wear, but because it felt difficult to care. Every outfit looked wrong. Every hairstyle looked stupid. Still, you tried.
You washed your face, fixed your makeup, changed into something comfortable, and spent a little extra time making yourself look presentable. By the time you finally stepped back into the living room, nearly thirty minutes had passed.
Sae was sitting on your couch with one ankle resting over his knee, scrolling through his phone.
βIβm ready,β you said quietly.
His eyes lifted from the screen. βGod, you took forever.β
You rolled your eyes. βNice to see you too.β
Sae stood and stretched his arms over his head.
βCome on. Rinβs waiting at the park.β
βPark?β you repeated as you grabbed your keys.
βThe one we used to play at when we were kids.β He said.
You locked your apartment behind you and followed him toward the elevator. The ride down was quiet but neither of you really felt the need to fill the silence.
Once you reached the parking lot, Sae unlocked his car and climbed into the driverβs seat. You settled into the passenger seat and buckled yourself in.
The drive itself was peaceful. The city slowly gave way to quieter streets. The sunset painted the sky in shades of orange and pink, and for the first time in days your mind wasnβt completely occupied by Otoya.
The cold air drifting through the cracked window felt nice. Eventually, Sae pulled into a small parking lot beside a field. From here, you could already see someone in the distance. A soccer ball bounced effortlessly from foot to foot.
βHurry up,β Sae muttered while stepping out. βBefore he starts bitching.β
You laughed softly and followed him. βWhat exactly are we doing?β you asked.
Sae shoved his hands into his pockets. βHonestly? No clue.β
βWhat?β You blinked.
βHe wanted to trainβ¦β Sae groaned.
βAnd?β
βI donβt.β He shrugged
You stared at him. βSo your plan is to just wing it?β
βPretty much.β
By then, Rin had noticed the two of you. He trapped the ball beneath his foot and jogged over. βSae.β Rin glanced at you before looking back at his brother. βI thought it was just going to be us. His gaze shifted toward you. βNot that I mind.β
You awkwardly pointed at yourself. βWow. Thanks.β
Rin shrugged. βI just meanβ¦ wonβt she get bored?β
Sae scratched the back of his neck. βActually, I was thinking weβd hang out instead.β
Rin blinked. βBut I brought all this stuff.β He gestured toward the equipment scattered around the field.
βWe donβt always have to spend time together playing soccer,β Sae said, his voice softened. βI think we deserve to actually spend time together.β
Rin stared at him. Then his expression relaxed. βOh.β A small smile appeared. βYou shouldβve just said that.β
Sae looked relieved.
βI wasnβt going to complain either way.β Rin pointed toward the equipment. βCouldβve saved me from carrying all that, though.β
You laughed. βI hope Iβm not interrupting brother bonding time.β
Rin looked over at you. βNo.β Then after a brief pauseβ βYou seem easy to be around.β
Your eyes widened. βReally?β
βI see why Sae likes hanging out with you.β The second those words left his mouth, your entire mood changed.
βOh my god.β Sae immediately groaned. βNo.β
βYou think Iβm fun?β You said, looking at Rin with sparkles in your eyes.
βY/n.β Sae called out.
βYou think Iβm easy to be around?β
βY/n!β Sae called out again.
βYou think Iβm amazing?!β
Before Rin could answer, you grabbed his hand with both of yours. Rin stood completely still. Honestly, he looked more confused than anything. βUhβ¦β
Sae covered his face. βRin, congratulations. You activated her.β
βYou think Iβm amazing?β you repeated.
βI didnβt say all that.β Rin looked away nervously.
βYou implied it though!β You frowned.
βI really didnβtβ¦?β He chuckled nervously.
Sae physically grabbed your shoulder and pulled you away. βOkay. Thatβs enough.β
You finally laughed for the first time in thrre days. βSorry,β you said. βItβs just been a while since I felt this happy.β
Sae lit a cigarette. βThe fuck?β
You looked over. βWhat?β
βDo I not make you happy?β He questioned.
You snorted and Rin laughed quietly. The three of you ended up standing around for a while, talking about random things. Nothing important really. Just small conversations. The sky gradually darkened above you, and then a cold gust of wind hit. Everyone immediately regretted being outside.
βYeah, absolutely not.β Sae shivered. βGet back in the car.β
Within minutes, the three of you were back inside. Rin took the front seat while you sat in the back. The heater blasted warm air through the vents.
βOkay,β Rin said. βWhere are we going?β
Sae looked at him then at you through the mirror then back at Rin. βI donβt know.β
You laughed. βWow. I thought you had a plan.β
βYou know I never plan anything.β Sae pointed toward you. βThatβs why youβre usually the one deciding where we go.β
Before you could answer, Rin spoke up. βCan I ask something?β
βDepends.β You and Sae said at the same time.
βThere was a rumor online.β Rin continued. βPeople think you two are dating.β
Sae groaned immediately. βOh no.β
Then both you and Sae burst out laughing.
βWhere did you even see that?β Sae laughed.
βTwitter.β Rin replied, confused on what was funny.
Sae groaned louder. βOf course it was Twitter.β He rubbed his forehead. βThat app is filled with idiots.β
βSo youβre not dating?β Rin asked.
βNo.β Sae pointed between the two of you βWeβre friends.β
βClose friends,β you corrected. βIf it wasnβt for me, your life would be boring.β
βI guess.β He shrugged.
βYou guess?β You glared at him through the mirrior.
βI know.β He sighed, βIs that better Ms. L/n?β
βThere we go.β You smiled.
Rin shook his head. βYou two are weird.β
βThank you,β you replied.
Sae sighed. βNow please tell me where weβre going.β
You immediately sat up. βOh! I have an ideaβan amusement park.β
There was a long silence, and both brothers looked concerned.
βY/n.β Sae said.
βWhat?β You replied, not sure what was the issue.
βItβs almost night.β Sae turned his neck to look at you.
βSo?β You rolled your eyes.
βDo you seriously think an amusement park is open right now?ββTwenty minutes later, Sae was following your GPS anyway. And twenty minutes after that, the three of you found yourselves in the middle of nowhere. There were trees that surrounded the parking lot and warning signs were scattered everywhere. And it was hella dark.
And the entire place looked like the setting of a horror movie. Rin stared out the window. βCool.β
βWhat?β Sae asked concerningly. βThis is where we die! NOT cool.β
You groaned. βCan you stop?β
βIβm joking, not cool becauseββ Rin pointed toward the dark woods. βTheyβll find our bodies in a lake in there.β
Sae slowly turned toward him. βWhat is wrong with you?β
βIβm just preparing for reality, unlike you two.β Rin locked his side of the door.
βYou need help.β Sae shook his head and unlocked all the doors.
You pinched the bridge of your nose. βGuys. Just because it looks weird doesnβt mean itβs dangerous.β
Neither brother looked convinced At all. Suddenly, Rinβs phone started vibrating nonstop. The screen lit up once. Then twice. Then again.
Sae glanced over from the driverβs seat and raised an eyebrow. βWhoβs blowing up your phone this late?β he asked. βYour boyfriend?β
Rin didnβt even look up.
βDunno.β He shoved his hands into his pockets. βIgnore it. Letβs keep walking.β Clearly, he had no interest in checking whatever it was. The problem was that the notifications wouldnβt stop.
Buzz. Buzz. Buzz.
Rin let out a long sigh. βJesus Christβ¦β Finally, he pulled his phone out and unlocked it.
βGroup chat,β he said after a few seconds.
βWhat now?β Sae asked.
βTheyβre talking about going to the beach in a few days.β
Your eyes immediately lit up. βA beach trip?β you gasped. βSae, we should go too.β
Sae shrugged. βI donβt mind.β
βActually, wait.β Rin said and looked around. βI need proof that Im with you guys.β
You blinked. βWhat?β
Sae scanned the nearly empty parking lot.
βThere isnβt even anyone here to take a picture.β
βWhat are you talking about?β you asked.
You pointed toward the far end of the lot βThereβs literally two people right there.β
Sae followed your finger and his expression immediately changed. βWhat the fuck?β
βWhat?β You asked.
βThis parking lot was empty ten seconds ago.β Sae said.
You exchanged a glance with Rin. βYouβre being paranoid.β
βIβm serious.β Sae tried to sound convincing.
βYou always say that.β Rin scoffed.
βNo, seriously. There was nobody here.β The two strangers were already walking across the lot.
You snorted. βGet a load of this guy.β
Rin looked equally unconcerned. Sae stared at both of you like you were the crazy ones.
Before he could argue further, you waved at the strangers. βExcuse me!β
The two men looked over. One of them raised a hand. βYeah?β
βWould you mind taking a picture for us?β You asked politely.
βSure.β The taller one accepted Saeβs phone and gestured for the three of you to stand together.
You immediately grabbed Rinβs arm and pulled him closer. Rin looked mildly annoyed but Sae looked even more annoyed. Just as the picture was about to be taken, the second stranger casually walked over and stood beside Sae like he belonged there.
Sae slowly turned his head. ββ¦Why are you in the picture?β
The stranger shrugged. βThought itβd be funny.β
βIt wonβt.β Sae narrowed his eyes.
You elbowed Sae. βBe nice. Theyβre helping us.β
Sae looked like he wanted to argue. Instead, he forced a smile that looked more painful than pleasant.
The flash went off then another picture then another. As the stranger stood beside him, he suddenly leaned closer. Just enough for Sae to hear him. βI know you.β
Sae froze. The man immediately stepped back as if nothing had happened. The strangers handed the phone back. Then they simply walked away into the amusement park.
Sae stood there staring after them. ββ¦Okay.β
You and Rin had already started walking.
βDid you guys not hear that?β Sae called out.
βHear what?β Rin asked.
βHe said he knows me.β Sae said.
You stared. βWellβ¦ Youβre famous.β
βThatβs not the weird part!β Sae raised his arms up.
βThen whatβs the weird part?β You questioned.
βThe way he said it?!β Was Sae going crazy? Was he more crazier than THE Bachira?
Rin looked completely unimpressed as he sent the photo in the groupchat. βYou sound insane.β
βI know what I heard.β He shouted.
Neither of you looked convinced but you and Rin walked away from the Sae.
Sae ran a hand through his hair and laughed nervously. βGreat. Fantastic.β By the time he caught up, you had already reached the front gate.
You looked up at the giant sign above the entrance. Then your smile slowly disappeared.ββ¦Oh.β
Rin squinted. βWhat?β
You pointed upward.
CLOSED FOR CONSTRUCTION.
The three of you stared at it for several seconds. Then Sae let out the biggest sigh of the night. βI fucking knew it.β
You scratched the back of your neck. βOkayβ¦ thatβs weird.β
βWe drove all the way out here. FOR NO FUCKING REASON?β Sae was technically pacing back and forth.
βIt said it was open online.β You said, frowning.
Rin glanced around. βDidnβt those two guys go inside?β
βThatβs what I was thinking,β you said. βMaybe theyβre security?β
Sae threw both hands into the air. βWhy is nobody listening to me?β
Neither of you answered. You were both too busy staring through the locked gates.
Sae pinched the bridge of his nose. βI think we should leave.β
No response. βSeriously.β Still nothing. βLetβs go get food?β
You immediately turned around. βThatβs a great idea.β
Rin nodded. βYeah.β
Sae stared blankly. βOh, now you two want to listen.β Neither of you acknowledged him.
The three of you headed back toward the parking lot. By the time you reached the car, Rin was already texting in the group chat again.
You climbed into the back seat while Sae got behind the wheel. A few moments later, the engine started. As Sae backed out of the parking space, he glanced at you through the mirror. βY/n.β
βYeah?β You replied.
βWhere did you even find this place?β He asked, staring at you.
You hesitated. ββ¦Instagram.β
The silence that followed was immediate.
Sae slowly nodded. βOkay.β You already knew that tone. βNever do that again.β
βOh, come onββ
βNo. It was literally closed! Who knew if those two guys were even real.β Sae said.
You crossed your arms. βYouβre no fun.β
Sae ignored you and focused on the road. A few minutes passed before he noticed Rin had gone unusually quiet.
The younger Itoshi was staring at his phone and his expression looked irritated.
Sae glanced over. βWhat?β
Rin locked his screen. βNothing.β
βThat doesnβt look like nothing.β Sae pushed further.
βJust someone saying stupid shit.β Rin said with an annoyed tone.
Sae considered asking another question. Then decided against it. Whatever was happening in that group chat could stay in that group chat.βCanβt wait to get out of this place,β he muttered.
The headlights swept across the empty road as the car finally left the parking lot behind. The ride to the burger place only took about twenty minutes, but the rest of the drive was quiet.
You rested your head against the cold window and watched the city pass by in a blur of streetlights and traffic. Unfortunately, that only gave your mind room to wander. Without meaning to, your thoughts drifted back to Otoya. The way he always managed to make you laugh. The endless phone calls that somehow lasted until three in the morning. The stupid messages heβd send throughout the day just to annoy you. For a few hours, hanging out with Sae and Rin had helped you forget about him. But only for a few hours.
No matter how hard you tried, he still lingered somewhere in the back of your mind. You didnβt even realize you had arrived until Sae opened his door and stepped out of the car.
βHurry up,β he said, glancing back at you.
βOh.β You blinked and quickly unbuckled your seatbelt before climbing out after them.
The restaurant sat on the corner of a busy street, glowing with bright neon signs that reflected against the windows. The moment Sae pulled the door open, the smell of grilled burgers and fries hit you immediately.
Your stomach growled. βOkay, maybe this was a good idea,β you admitted.
βObviously,β Sae replied.
Rin pointed toward an empty booth near the front window. βShould we sit there?β
βWorks for me,β Sae said.
The three of you slid into the booth. Through the glass window, you could see cars pulling in and out of the parking lot while headlights swept across the pavement.
You already knew what you wanted to order, so the three of you spent the next few minutes talking about random things while waiting.
Eventually, a waitress approached the table with a notebook in hand.
βHi! Welcome to Fumiβs Burgers! Today we have a special deal on our burgers andββ She suddenly froze and her eyes widened. βOh my God.β You already knew where this was going. βTHE Itoshi Sae and Itoshi Rin?!β
Rin immediately sighed and Sae rubbed his forehead awkwardly.
The waitress practically looked ready to pass out. βIβm so sorry,β she blurted out. βIβm a huge fan. Likeβactually a huge fan.β
βItβs fine,β Sae said.
The poor girl took a deep breath and tried to compose herself. βAhem. Anyways! We also have our new Blue Lock Meal promotion today. Can I start you guys off with drinks, or are you ready to order?β
βBlue Lock Meal?β Rin repeated with visible disappointment.
You immediately sat up. βSae.β
βNo.β Sae said immediately.
βSaeee..β You whined.
βNo.β He exhaled deeply.
βSae, we have to get the Blue Lock Meal! As a sign of appreciation for your little brother,β you added dramatically.
Sae stared at you for a second before nodding. βYou know what? Thatβs a great idea.β
βTraitor,β Rin muttered.
Sae looked back at the waitress. βWeβll take three Blue Lock Meals. Extra bacon.β
The waitress looked thrilled. βComing right up! Three Blue Lock Meals with extra bacon.β βAnd drinks?β
βLet me guess, you have matching drinks that come with the meal too or what?β Rin said sarcastically but Sae elbowed him after.
The waitress looked at him nervously, βThat isβ¦ correct! The drink represents the amazing famous Isagi Yoichi!β βItβs basically just sprite mixed with pink lemonade!βΒ
βIsagi?β Rinβs head snapped up.
βThere are other drink recommendations based off of Bachira, Reo, Nagiββ
βGive me that one. I donβt care about the other stupid players.β
The waitress blinked. βJust that fast?β
βYes.β Rin replied, as he fixed his posture.
You immediately covered your mouth to stop yourself from laughing.
The waitress quickly wrote it down. βAnd for you two?β
βWater. Lemon slices if possible,β Sae answered.
βCoke,β you said.
βPerfect! Iβll be right back.β She said, and proceeded to leave.
The second she left, Rin leaned back in his seat. βThis is stupid.β
You immediately pointed at him. βAww. Rin wanted the Isagi drink.β
βNo I didnβt.β He mumbled.
βYou literally didββ
βBecause it sounded normal.β He glared at you. βImagine what the fucking Bachira drink was.β
βMhmβ¦β You knew he was only lying to save himself from embarrassment.
Sae glanced up from his phone. βItβs pretty cute, Rin.β
Rin looked personally offended, faced his direction at the window. βBoth of you are annoying.β
Your laughter trailed off as you absentmindedly spun a ketchup bottle across the table while the conversation faded into background noise. The music playing through the restaurant speakers suddenly seemed louder. Or maybe your thoughts were. Before you knew it, memories began creeping back in.
The way he stared at you as if you were his only main focus. The way his hot breath touched your neck or even the small kisses he planted onto your shoulder. You shifted in your seat and stared down at the table.
Donβt think about him. Think about literally anything else.
Your eyes wandered around the restaurant. Families! Groups of friends! Couples Way too many couples.
Your attention settled on a younger couple sitting a few booths away. They were laughing over something on one of their phones, completely caught up in their own little world. You chest began to hurt and you looked away immediately.
βY/n.β
You didnβt respond but it was clear your focus was on somewhere else.
βY/n?β
Yet again, nothing.
βY/N.β
This time you jumped at the loud call. βHuh?β You said.
Both Sae and Rin were staring at you. Sae then frowned at you. βAre you okay?β
βWhat?β You asked, confused or mostly embarrassed.
βYouβre crying.β He muttered.
Your hand immediately touched your cheek. You froze. Sure enough, your face was wet. βOh.β Heat rushed to your face. βSorry.β You quickly wiped your eyes. βI didnβt realize.β
Rin glanced toward the couple you had been staring at before looking back at you. His expression softened slightly. βIs it about him?β
βHim?β you repeated. Then you remembered. Right. They knew exactly who you were talking about. You looked down. βYeah.β You answered, βOtoya.β Silence followed after.
Sae only sighed before running his hands over his hair.
Rin scratched the back of his neck. βNo wonder he was saying all that.β
Your head immediately lifted. βWhat was he saying?β
Rin instantly regretted opening his mouth.βNothingβ¦β
βRin.β Sae warned
βSeriously Sae? I dont want to hurt her feelings. Weβre having a great time.β Rin said.
You looked equally curious now. βWhat did he say?β
Rin refused to look at you, but the longer you stared at him made him uncomfortable. βFine.β He sat back in his seat.
βLook, Otoya was just being stupid. We were talking about the plans of the beach but he mentioned how he was excited to go to the beach just for the girls. I thought it was weird because he was completely obsessed with you. I didnt butt in until my name was brought up and I was clearly busy with the two of you earlier. So once I told them all I was with you he started getting all defensiveβ¦β He said awkwardly. ββ¦and accused you of sleeping with Sae...βΒ
Your expression flattened.
Of course.
There was silence. Then a loud laugh came from you. Well it was more of a concerning laugh. βMe?β you wheezed. Rin and Sae exchanged a look and forced a laugh with you.
βME and SAE?β You started laughing harder.
Sae stopped laughing and looked offended now. βWhy am I catching strays?β βOkay itβs not funny anymore.β
Neither of them seemed convinced that your laughter was genuine. But eventually, you wiped your eyes. βEven if I was sleeping with Sae, why would it matter?β You continued. βSuddenly heβs so worried about what I do.β
βRin, Iβll pay you to beat the fuck out of him.β You looked directly at Rin.
The waitress then came back with the three meals and placed them onto the table.Β
Rin stared at you for a second and then proceeded to scratch his face. βI guess? If you want, Iβll do it for free.β Rin replied.
The waitress didnβt want to butt in, so she focused on Sae who seemed he wasnβt involved. βAny straws?β
βNo, thatβll be it.β Sae replied, ignoring the tension happening there.
βAlrightβ¦ so, thatβll be 25.40!β
Sae nodded, and pulled out a wallet. He placed two twenty dollar bills. βKeep the change. Youβve been an amazing waitress tonight.β
βAh! Thank you Mr. Itoshi! Its been a pleasure, please have an amazing rest of your night.β She then left.
Sae then looked back at you two, βRin youβll be in deep shit.β He said, eating a fry.
βItβs clear how much of an issue he had been to the majority of us. Someone has to do it otherwise.β Rin muttered as he stared at the oddlyβ¦ blue burger bun that had a number 11 carved into it. βOkay, is all of this Isagi themed?β Rin questioned.
You laughed nervously, you didnβt expect him to agree. But you guessed there was no getting him out of this. βGuess so? Is your boyfriend that better than everyone?β
βI mean yes, except for me of course.β Rin took a bite of his blue burger.
βSureβ¦ also how are you getting out of trouble?β Sae said.
βThe real question is, Sae how are YOU getting Rin out of trouble?β You joked.
Β βMe? Fuck that.β He scoffed, βThat fucking bowl cut man scares the shit out of me.β Sae stared at you.
βLook, heβs literallyβ¦ veryβ¦Β chill.β Rin said. βWell, to those he likes.β
Sae rolled his eyes and groaned. βOh yeah that sounds very convincing.β
You couldnβt help but giggle, atleast they made things better for you. βYou guys are dumb.β You laughed.
βOh says the dumb one? The one who let some guy fuck after likeβa few months?β Sae muttered.
You blinked multiple times, βMind you he wasβlet me just shut up. Otoya is dead to me either ways.βΒ
βSure.β He said sarcastically.
You, Sae, and Rin spent the rest of the time chatting and eating. Afterwards, you all went back to Saeβs car.
Rin spoke about his time in Bluelock and how he somehow asked Isagi to be his boyfriend. Sae then spoke about the fact that heβll be going back to Spain in a few months for some βunfinished business.β
βOkay, Y/n, weβll drop you off first,β Sae said, reaching over to lower the music.
You looked up from your phone and frowned. βAw, and here I thought we still had more things to do.β
A small laugh escaped him. βAs much as Iβd like to keep hanging out, I still have to drive Rin back to where heβs staying.β
βNo, no, I get it.β You waved him off. βI was kidding.β
βDonβt worry, Y/n.β Rin glanced over his shoulder. βWeβll hang out again soon. I still need to go over the beach plans with everyone anyway.β
You gave him a thumbs-up from the backseat.βGood. Then make sure to tell me everything.β
βSae can do that,β Rin said.
βYeah, yeah,β Sae muttered.
The rest of the drive passed quietly. The radio played softly in the background while the city lights blurred past the windows. Eventually, familiar buildings came into view.
A few minutes later, Sae pulled up in front of your apartment building and shifted the car into park.
βWell,β he said, resting an arm on the steering wheel, βhere we are.β
You unbuckled your seatbelt and grabbed your purse. Before getting out, you paused and looked at both of them. βSeriously, thanks.β
Sae raised an eyebrow. βFor what?β
You smiled. βFor today. For dragging me out of my apartment. It really helped.β
Sae looked away toward the windshield. βYeah. Try not to lock yourself inside for another three days.β
You rolled your eyes. βNo promises.β
βAnnoying.β Sae muttered.
You laughed before opening the door βGoodnight, guys.β You stepped out, shut the door behind you, and headed toward the apartment entrance.
Sae didnβt drive away immediately. Instead, he waited until he saw you disappear through the building doors. Only then did he let out a quiet sigh and glance at Rin.
His younger brother was already looking down at his phone, typing something⦠again. Him and that damn phone.
βWhoβs texting again?β Sae asked.
Rin barely looked up. βIsagi.β
Sae groaned immediately. βOf course it is.β
βHe wants me back at Blue Lock.β Rin muttered.
βRight now?β He looked at him confused.
βApparently theyβre trying to figure out the beach plans.β Rin locked his phone and shoved it into his pocket. βMind dropping me off?β
βYeah, sure.β Sae started the car again and shook his head. βGod, I really didnβt want to drive all the way out there tonight.β
The drive to Blue Lock took nearly an hour and a half. About twenty minutes in, Rin had already fallen asleep. Sae glanced over occasionally to make sure he hadnβt somehow rolled into the center console.
The rest of the drive was quiet. Without the conversation from earlier, his thoughts kept drifting back to you. He didnβt like seeing you like that. It bothered him more than he wanted to admit.
Eventually, the familiar Blue Lock facility appeared in the distance. The massive building sat in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by darkness and empty land.
Sae had almost forgotten how isolated the place was. As he approached the gate, a security guard stepped forward but Sae rolled down the window.
βGood evening. Do you have any businessββThe guard paused and his eyes widened. βAhβItoshi Sae.β He straightened immediately. βSorry about that.β
βJust dropping off my brother.β
The guard nodded.
βFunny. A lot of the players have been coming tonight.β He stepped aside and gestured toward the road ahead. βYouβre good to go.β
βThanks.β Sae drove through the gate and up the long hill leading to the facility. A few minutes later, he pulled over near the entrance and turned off the engine. Then he looked over at Rin, who was still asleep.
βRin.β He said, but there was no response. βRin.β Still nothingβ¦ Sae reached over and shoved his shoulder βWake up. Weβre here.β
Rin groaned and slowly opened his eyes. ββ¦Fuck.β He stretched his arms above his head before unbuckling his seatbelt.
βHurry up and get out,β Sae said. βIβm trying to go home.β
βNice to see youβre still a terrible brother.β Rin yawned.
βGet out.β Sae said.
Rin sighed dramatically and opened the door. Before leaving, he paused. βThanks for the ride.β
βYeah.β Sae said.
βAnd the food.β Rin continued
βSure.β Sae had his palms on the steering wheel.
βAndββ Rin almost continued.
βLeave.β He said loudly.
Rin snorted. βWhatever.β He stepped out and shut the door. βSee you later.β
βHopefully not.β The second the door closed, Sae drove off.
Rin watched the taillights disappear down the road. βHow rude,β he muttered.
Turning around, he looked toward the brightly lit building. And here he thought he wouldnβt be back until next week. βWhat a hassle.β The words left his mouth before he immediately cringed.
βGod.β Who did he think he was? Nagi? Shoving his hands into his pockets, Rin headed inside. The hallways were mostly quiet, but he could already hear distant voices echoing through the building. Which meant everyone was probably gathered in one place. The cafeteria? Unfortunately.
Rin sighed. βGreat.β
Following the noise, he made his way down the hallway. The closer he got, the louder it became. Rin stopped outside the doors and rubbed his forehead. He had only been back for five minutes. And he already wanted to leave. Slowly, he pushed the door open and stepped inside, deciding not to announce his presence just yet.
The air in the room had been thin for hours, stretched tight like a wire about to snap. Bachira bounced on the balls of his feet, energy crackling off him like static electricity, his eyes too bright for the hour. βGuysss!! Are we missing anyone!?β
Chigiri sat cross legged on the low couch, fingers working through the last section of his hair with practiced ease, weaving it into a neat braid. He didnβt look up. βBachira, please. How are you still this wired at two in the morning?β
Bachira grinned wide enough to show every tooth, his voice lilting and manic. βMy monsterβs wide awake! It keeps whispering that something funβs about to happenββ
Otoya cut him off with a lazy scoff from the opposite side of the room. He lounged between Yukimiya and Karasu, one ankle hooked over his knee, posture deliberately relaxed. βNo one gives a shit about the crazy shit you see, Bachira.β
Isagiβs soccer ball stopped spinning on his toe. He lowered his foot, the ball thudding softly against the floor, and his gaze locked onto Otoya. βShut the fuck up, Otoya. You always gotta insert yourself where nobody asked.β
Otoyaβs smirk sharpened, a blade glinting under fluorescent lights. βJust because everyone kisses your ass doesnβt mean I have to listen.β
Hioriβs voice sliced through the rising tension. βOtoya, shut the fuck up. Now.β
Isagi stepped closer, ball tucked under one arm and his jaw tight. βNo, Hioriβitβs fine. If heβs got something to say, let him say it. Fucking. Say it.β
Bachiraβs shoulders curled inward. βGuysβ¦? Egoβs gonna be pissed if we start something. Please, let's justββ
Karasu shot him a sharp, silencing look. βBachira. Shh. Donβt.β
Otoya leaned forward, elbows on knees and stare locked on Isagi. βRemember how you said Iβm all bark and no bite? Youβre lucky your boyfriend isnβt here to defend your gay ass. Where is he, anyway? Did he finally realize what a whiny little bitch you are?β
The room went dead silent that you could hear the hum of the vending machine down the hall.
Yukimiyaβs mouth fell open, his hand pausing mid-gesture while Hiori stood up so fast the couch cushion squeaked and backed toward the wall, eyes wide. βI donβt know him,β Hiori muttered under his breath.
Otoya raised both hands in mock surrender, the smirk still plastered on his face. Then he lunged forward, faster than anyone expected, and grabbed Isagiβs face.
His fingers dug into his cheeks, squeezing hard enough to leave red marks. βI mean, lookβitβs written all over his face. You can smell it on him. Like a little fag.β
Isagi shoved him hard, stumbling back. βDonβt fucking touch me!β
But Otoya seized the sprout of hair on Isagiβs head and yanked, twisting him around to face Karasu, forcing Isagi to crane his neck at an awkward angle. βDonβt you think so, Karasu? Am I lying?β
Karasuβs eyes flicked past Otoyaβs shoulder to the far corner of the room. His face paled. His voice dropped. βDude, youβre going too far. I wouldnβtβjust stop. Please.β
Otoya laughed, the sound ugly and brittle. βStop? Iβm just getting started.β
Footsteps pounded across the floor. Then Rinβs fist connected with Otoyaβs jaw before Otoya could even turn his head.
The impact snapped Otoyaβs head sideways with a sickening crack; blood sprayed from his split lip. Rin didnβt pause. He grabbed two fistfuls of Otoyaβs shirt and slammed him to the floor, knees pinning his hips, the full weight of his rage pressing down.
Isagi shouted, βRin! Rin, stop!β
Rin didnβt look up. His knuckles were white and his breath ragged. He drove another punch into Otoyaβs cheek.
βFucking bitch! Didnβt you hear him tell you to let go? Didnβt you hear him say no?β A third punch split Otoyaβs eyebrow and warm blood coated Rinβs knuckles, trickling down his wrist.
Otoya bucked, trying to roll free, his shoes scraping against the floor. βCrazy assholeβget the fuck off me! Get off!β
Rinβs forearm pressed across Otoyaβs throat, heavy enough that every breath rasped, every word came out strangled. βYet you also insulted him,β Rin growled, βYou think that shitβs funny? Calling him a faggot?β
Otoya wheezed, βIt was a j-joke! Just a joke, you psycho!β
Rinβs eyes burned darker onto Otoya. βOh? Was it also a joke when you fucked with her feelings? When you made her cry? When you told her she meant everything and then walked away like and lied?β
Otoyaβs pupils blew wide. The room seemed to tilt around him. He stopped struggling and his body going limp under Rinβs weight.
Chigiriβs voice cut through the silence, sharp and desperate. βSomeone get Ego! Now!β
Karasu and Hiori grabbed Rinβs shoulders, but Rin didnβt move. He stayed straddling Otoyaβs limp body. His hands trembled, still clenched around the fabric of Otoyaβs shirt.
Rin took a ragged breath, and his voice dropped to a whisper. βShe wanted me to tell you something. She said youβre dead to her. Dead. Do you understand?β
The words landed like another blow. Otoya stopped struggling entirely. His chest heaved once, twice. Then a broken, wet laugh bubbled out of him, βDeadβ¦ to herβ¦ thatβsβ¦ thatβs funnyβ¦β
His hand twitched, reaching toward his own face, smearing blood across his cheek. He stared up at the ceiling, vision blurring, ears ringing. He thought about regret.
What was he thinking? Did he think youβd actually be nice to him? That youβd still love him? That youβd forgive him? Were you really dead to him? Forever? Was he regretting it now? About all the things heβd said that he couldnβt take back?
And then he laughed again, softer this time. But Rinβs fist came down one last time. Otoyaβs head snapped back against the floor and his eyes rolled back.
