          𝐀𝐑𝐆𝐔𝐈𝐍𝐆  𝐖𝐈𝐓𝐇  𝐊𝐀𝐑𝐋  was  like  talking  to  a  brick  wall;      both  of  them  are  stubborn  as  all  hell,  but  antonio  won’t  back  down  from  this  either.  he  reads  the  other  wolf’s  body  language  easier  than  he  thinks,  thanks  to  years  of  pushing  down  anger  and  anything  else  he  didn’t  want  boiling  out.      “you’re  a  damn  good  liar.  but  i’m  also  not  stupid.”      he  doesn’t  care  if  karl  says  it  doesn’t  hurt  —  he  got  shot,  and  he  shouldn’t  even  be  on  his  feet  right  now.  crossing  his  arms,  a  look  of  disbelief  on  his  face.      “no  need  to  pass  tests.  i  wasn’t  planning  on  letting  you  leave  REGARDLESS.”      antonio  is  almost  surprised  that  karl  didn’t  see  that  coming.  he  takes  a  step  forward,  tone  getting  more  direct;      jeremy  may  be  alpha,  but  tonio  knows  how  to  parent  when  people  are  acting  like  children.      “sit.  now.”

           “Oh, hello.” Elijah smiles, shifting slightly where he lay to be more comfortable. He had just been about to get up and do some work, but it appears that Karl had other plans ( and who was elijah to deny the large wolf when he wanted snuggles. ) He chuckled as he wrapped his arms around Karl’s neck, his hands sinking into the soft fur. He lifted his head just enough to kiss the top of Karl’s nose. “You know, you’re making me quite LAZY these days.” his tone is light and full of amusement. “How can I possibly do work when I have a very cuddly wolf who deserves my utmost attention?”

              Few months ago, Karl would have changed back before touching him. He isn’t ashamed – but it’s not exactly pride either, the beast something he’s learnt to hide, sometimes worrying if it was the mask of civility Elijah fell for. The extremely well-polished package. But no; he knows the wolf is just as much Karl as the man is, loves both parts equally ( in a way, perhaps, that karl never could ).

         This is why you don’t ignore a wolf, especially a werewolf who can be quite pushy when he wants to be - and when he wants cuddles. Especially from pack who has been very stingy on the cuddles. Which was why bring IGNORED was quite insulting, and drastic times called for drastic measures and Nick made CERTAIN that Karl had no choice but to pay attention to him. He tilted his head, before raising it for another “awooooOOOOOOOOO!!!” then looked at Karl and licked his face. ATTENTION, KARL. PAY HIM ATTENTION.

“oh, i know who karl marsten is; a career criminal and a drifter. he's spent the last forty years not giving a shit about anyone. guys like that don't wake up one morning and turn team player. he's using the pack. he doesn't care about anyone in it.”

         There had been plenty of thoughts on Elijah’s mind that day. Getting into New Orleans without any more of his siblings coming to harm, freeing Niklaus, and returning to the safe place where Hope was, so they could all be there to protect her and see her reunited with her father. Revenge had also been on his mind, burning anger, revenge, guilt - but they did not have the means for that, so he pushed it aside ( to fester and grow ) and focused on the task at hand. It wasn’t until they were almost at the safe house did Hayley mention Karl was there and a wave of emotions washed over him, emotions he couldn’t place or name ( excitement, fear, relief, terror? ) and found himself waiting anxiously until they pulled up in front of the house, in the dead of night.

         Karl was probably asleep, Elijah told himself. He wouldn’t want to wake him up. It could wait to the morning, he was sure. It’s not like it’s been years…. Elijah wouldn’t blame him if he decided that all of this was worth too much trouble - there had been no guarantee that any of the Mikaelsons could be woken up in a timely fashion. But as they approach the house, he sees Karl waiting on the porch and he knows there’s no delaying this ( he didn’t want to, he wanted to see karl, he’s missed him so much. ) so he approaches as his siblings and Hayley head inside. There’s so much he could say, so much he’s thought about saying in the Chambre, but all that he manages to say is: “Hello Karl.”

              He wanted to go with Hayley but staying behind is the better option. Not for him but overall. While he’s a good fighter, she’s a hybrid – more powerful than him – and it’s not like his role in this is useless. Keep Hope safe. Keep Elijah’s niece safe. It’s what Elijah would have wanted ( in case something goes wrong, there’s an entire wolf pack ready to take her in, to protect her ), not that it eases the restlessness deep in his gut. After he tucks Hope in, safe and sound, he takes his spot at the porch, waiting. And waiting.
