[Aged up!!! Reader:21 Paul & Jared:22 Sam & Leah:23]
Paul always had shitty luck. His family was broken. His anger issues caused too many problems to count. And he had been in love with you since the day he met you. To top it all off you were Jared's girlfriend. Pretty unlucky, right?
After another turn of fate, the universe curses Paul with the spirit of a wolf. Maybe this time lady luck will bless him with you as his imprint.
Is fate finally on his side?
[couldnât stop myself from posting lmao sorry, and as always, kinda slow burn bc i can't stfu]
Reader POV
It took all of your strength to tear your eyes off the back of Jaredâs head and look at the man guarding him from your view. Paul stood at Jaredâs side and was just as adamant in ignoring you. Why wonât they turn around?
âWhat the fuck have you got to say for yourselves huh?! Whatâs wrong with you Samuel!â Leah screamed, wrapping her arm protectively around your shoulders. âYou taking drugs or something? First you go missing, then these dickheads stop answering our texts, and now you three look like a bunch of gym junkies!!â
Samâs worried expression hardened into an angry mask as he looked down his nose at her. âItâs none of your business, Leah. Weâve been busy with things much more important than hanging around with a bunch of girls.â he harshly gritted through his clenched jaw. Ouch.
âMore important?! Maybe youâve forgotten, but we are your FRIENDS. We were worried sick about you!â Leah shot back, poking her head around Samâs side, âAnd donât get me started on you, fuckwits! Iâve been doing my best to stop Y/N from going crazy for TWO WEEKS!â
The pair of them stopped breathing and turned to look at each other. Seeing Jaredâs side profile, and how it had sharpened in such a short amount of time, was painful for you to accept. He was noticeably taller, his soft jawline had been carved into an angular square, and his eyes had hardened. The look of worry on his face confused you. Heâs the one that ghosted me, and now heâs hurt? Your boyfriend looked like a different person - and maybe he was.
âPaul, Iâm not surprised youâre being as cruel as ever, but you Jared⌠youâre honestly a disappointment.â Leah said with a disgusted tone.
Still, he refused to turn around. Still, he refused to speak.
Your body shook with sobs as you looked at the three boys you once thought were your friends. Is this really how itâs going to end? âYou need to leave. Iâm sorry, Y/Nâ, was all Sam could say in the face of your heartbreak. You couldnât believe this was happening, not until you heard it from Jared himself.
âJared?â You whispered, hurt seeping through your little voice. âW-why wonât you even look at me. Did I do something wrong?â You walked out of Leahâs comforting grasp, and reached around Sam to grab Jaredâs warm bicep. The muscle tightened under your fingers and the sheer size of it shocked you. His head dropped as he took shaky breaths.
âBaby⌠Iâm sorry.â His deep voice sent a wave of comfort through you; even if what he said cut you deep. âPlease, please look at me, Jarâ you begged. At this point, if you had to crawl through broken glass to see his beautiful smile again you would do it.
His head shot up and he turned to Sam. After a minute of silence, the older man gave a slight nod and Jared turned warily towards you. Paul grabbed his shoulder and the two exchanged a look of solidarity. What the fuck is happening?! Your mind was reeling with confusion and pain.
Finally, his eyes slowly raked up your body and locked with your watery pupils. He stood so close you could feel the heat radiating off him, as he searched your gaze for what felt like eternity before he let out a defeated sigh. âIâm so sorry, Y/N. I didnât want it to end like this -â No no no no no!
You saw red. Weeks of worrying about your boyfriend has led to this - a public break up in front of the only friends you had. âWhat?! So youâre serious? Are⌠are you breaking up with me?â, you cut him off, angry sobs spilling from your lips. He flinched back as if youâd slapped him; and you wished you had. âItâs not working out. Iâve had some time to myself and I-I donât think weâre right for each other.â He whispered.
Throwing your hands onto his pecs, you felt your world falling apart. âWhat did I do wrong? I gave you everything I have! I thought you loved me.âYou cried, pounding his chest with your weak fists. You knew this was pathetic, but your heart had been ripped out and drowned in the ocean behind you. All you could do was cry and beg. You had nothing left.
âI will always love you.â He said, pressing a kiss to your forehead and removing himself from your desperate grip.
Leah pulled you back protectively cocooning you in her arms, âYouâre a real piece of shit, Jared Cameron.â She growled at your now ex-boyfriend.
âWhy donât you two run along now, weâve got plans.â Sam said in a polite tone that was ruined by his snarled expression.
Jared turned to run down the beach and Sam followed suit. You stood in Leahâs arms, watching your life walk away from you. A deep breath beside you reminded you that Paul hadnât left yet. Is he here to gloat? To rub it in that Iâm not good enough?
You were ready to shout in his face - scream to the high heavens about how this was all his fault - when your throat closed. His dark eyes shone with a warmth so bright it could fill the cracks of your broken heart. You completely forgot why you were even standing on the beach in the first place. The only clear thought you could understand was a single sentence floating through your mind.
Oh my god⌠heâs beautiful.
The earth below you fell away and all you saw was Paul. His tall tanned physique, the curve of his thin lips, the shape of his adoring eyes. You took in every feature that made up his frame, and drank it in like youâd never seen him before.
Looking at Paul Lahote felt like coming home.
What the FUCK is happening to me!
Paul POV
Hearing the way you broke down as Jared left was the worst sound Paul had ever heard. You had been living through hell without Jared and now heâd left you with the weakest of excuses. Paul knew his friend was forced into doing this and he was going to suffer for months after this; but that didnât make it any easier to hear your beautiful voice begging for him to stay.
Samâs harsh words probably didnât help the situation either, but he really was just trying to keep you girls safe.
Leah stared daggers through Paulâs head and it was clear his presence wasnât welcome. He knew he should leave but the howling cries of his wolf forced him to stay. Mine! MINE! the gravely voice in his head demanded.
Mine? Paul questioned. And before he knew it, the most mouthwatering smell known to man washed over him. The wind had picked up along the shore and a gust of your sweet scent rippled through his senses. He took a deep breath and savoured the way it calmed his wolf. Holy shit!
You pulled your eyes away from Jaredâs retreating form and turned to Paul with a wildly angry look. Sheâs so hot when sheâs angry, he thought to himself and his wolf happily agreed.
Then it happened.
Your pupils dilated and your face melted into a look of mesmerised affection. Paul thought he was dreaming. His soul pulled forward in his chest and reached for you like long lost lovers. The sound of your heartbeat echoed through Paulâs head as every loose thread in his life wrapped around you. The way your eyes took him in filled his wolf with pride - he made a point to puff out his chest and tense every muscle he owned. Paul wouldâve spent a century here in comfortable silence with you, but life never did work in his favor.
A look of panic and confusion formed on your face and you turned to Leah. âWe will be leaving nowâ Leah snapped, forcing your hand into hers and dragging you down the beach. NO!
A low growl sounded through Paulâs teeth as he reached to keep you close. You flinched away from him but kept intense eye contact as Leah continued to walk you off the beach. He knew you werenât in the right place to accept what happened, but he thought surely you wouldâve fought to stay by his side⌠at least for a few more minutes.
Paul was going crazy, split down the middle with mixed emotions. The man wanted to laugh and shout with joy that you were finally his. The wolf wanted to sink his teeth into the next person he saw - his imprint had just walked away without a single word.
In mere seconds, Paul ran for the trees and phased. Bursting through his human skin, the visions of you played through his mind on repeat. SHEâS MINE! Y/N IS MINE!!! he happily shouted through the empty pack mind. Sharing a brain with his friends wasnât a great perk of being a shifter and Paul was grateful to be stuck on solo patrol for once. Howls of joy rang through the forest as he bounded towards your house.
The pull of the imprint bond was like his own navigation system leading him to you. Paul had always been drawn to you, and now he knew you would feel it too. As your backyard came into view, he sunk to the forest floor and watched your window for signs of life. The heartbeats coming from upstairs told him that you and Leah had made it home safe.
âLee Lee⌠did Paul feel different to you?â your voice traveled through your bedroom window and Paulâs ears perked up. Sheâs thinking about me!
âSame as always hun, donât worry about him. Fucker probably made Jared break up with youâ Leah bitterly remarked. DID NOT! he growled to himself. You let out a surprised gasp, âoh right. I kinda forgot about thatâŚâ
âWhat? You forgot that Paulâs a jerk, or that Jared broke up with you?â Leah Joked.
âUm, honestly both.â You said in a dazed voice. Paul scoffed at the thought that he was a jerk but continued listening. She forgot about Jared? Shit, maybe this imprint thing really is strong.
âWhat?! Y/N youâre not going into shock are you? Youâre taking this whole breakup thing a lot better than I thought you would. I mean you were screaming and crying, but the second Jared left you were like, completely fine.â Leah asked as you both walked downstairs.
âI donât know Lee, I might be crazy but something happened with Paul,â You admitted and Paul held his breath, âWhen I looked at him I felt like I saw his soul. Like every piece of him was on show. And now I say it out loud I think Iâm definitely going crazy!â
Paul felt your panic in his own chest as you spiralled. The two of you stepped out onto the back porch and the grey wolf sighed in relief seeing your beautiful face glowing in the sunlight.
âCalm down, itâs ok! Jared completely fucked you over, Iâm sure youâre just confused right now and definitely havenât processed it, babe.â Leah reassured you.
âI think youâre right. I just canât stop thinking about Paul. My brains probably trying to distract me from Jared but honestly girl, I felt like I was being pulled towards him. It was SUPER weirdâ You said, dropping down onto the back stairs.
He could tell you were deep in thought as you ignored everything that came out of Leahâs mouth. Cutting her off mid-sentence you asked, âLee⌠do you think Paul really does hate me?â Oh my god please Leah, please say something nice! Tell her sheâs wrong!!!
âPaul hates practically everything, but honestly Iâve never seen him be rude to anyone like he is to you. Itâs like you pissed in his rain boots or something.â She said, placing a hand on your shoulder. You sighed and nodded quietly.
LEAH CLEARWATER I WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU FOR THIS! Paul couldnât stop the furious bark he let out - Leah was ruining his chances before he even made a move.
Paul stayed flat on his stomach, watching you closely for another hour before he had to return to patrolling. Leaving you with his heart, he silently promised to prove you wrong. There was nothing in this life that he cared about more than you. He would do everything he could to see you as soon as possible.

Paul POV
After a few hours, Jared and Paul had finally calmed down enough for Sam to explain what had happened to the three of them. Paul thought he was stuck in the worldâs worst nightmare.
This canât be real. Iâm a fucking shifter. He couldnât believe it. Every tribal story theyâd been told since birth were no longer bedtime stories - they were ancient warnings from their ancestors.
Looking at his two friends, Paul had no choice but to accept what had happened. Samâs large frame embodied authority, clearly mirroring his alpha status. Jared had broadened and shot up at least 4 inches, and Paul noticed he too had grown in height and muscle mass. It was as if theyâd gone to bed as men and woken in the skin of gladiators.
The sound of their beating hearts rang clearly in Paulâs ears as he adjusted to his new hearing. A branch snapped miles off in the distance and he did his best to drown it out - itâs not like he had anything to be afraid of. Iâm the scariest thing in this forest⌠Great. He thought sarcastically.
âSo⌠what do we do now?â Jared asked in a helpless voice. Sam looked between his two followers and took a deep breath, âWe have to see Chief Black.â Paul gave his alpha a questioning look and turned to see if Jared understood - he didnât.
Walking through the thick forest towards the reservation, the moonlight filtered softly down onto the trio of semi naked men. Not a great time to gain night vision, Paul grumbled to himself. At least Sam had stashed shorts around the woods for situations like this.
As they approached the boundary line of their territory, Sam continued to explain. âThe tribal council of elders are the only ones permitted to know about us. Well, technically they arenât the only ones who can know, but Billy will have to tell you guys about that.â The click of his jaw gave Paul the assumption that it wasnât going to be a comfortable conversation.
Walking through the door to the old redwood cabin, Paulâs eyes fell on the wheelchair bound man sat before him. His long greying hair and withered features spoke of knowledge and years well lived. âI see the packs grown, young Uleyâ, Billy commented with a smile, as he took in the new faces.
âYou would be right Chief. All it took was a dramatic fist fight and these two idiots were phasing quicker than the blink of an eyeâ Sam said, rolling his eyes and taking a seat at the dining table. Paul was angry at the comment and ashamed of what had happened but now wasnât the time to start another battle. Not when it meant he could tear through human flesh like tissue paper.
âWell thereâs never going to be a good time to say this, so I may as well get it over with.â Billy sighed and wheeled himself over to the table.
âFor the next two weeks, neither of you boys are permitted to see anyone. No family, no friends, no one.â
Who is he to tell me what I can do?! Paul was livid. âWhy the fuck does it matter?â He gritted through his teeth.
Jared was just as upset at the news. His fists were shaking and his chest was puffed up intimidatingly - He actually had someone who relied on him. âI canât avoid my girlfriend; sheâs been through a lot recently. I wonât do that to herâ He said, throwing a sideways glance at Paul. The underlying comment hurt Paulâs heart but he knew his friend was right.
âYouâre new to this life and itâs dangerous to put people you love in a situation they canât handle!â The Chief said as he turned to Jared. âAnd about that⌠as protectors of this land, you can no longer have girlfriends. The only relationship you will have is with your imprint.â Billy said, studying the grimace on Jaredâs face.
âTHIS IS BULLSHIT!â Jared yelled and stepped back from the table, âWhat the fuck is an imprint? Why does that even matter if Iâm already in love!?â Paulâs gut rolled with envy as his best friend got angrier and angrier. He wasnât going to stop Jaredâs outburst though, because if Paul had you he would do anything he could to get home to you.
âYou will not scream in my house, boy!â Billyâs thunderous voice traveled through the room as he slammed his hands on the tabletop. âImprints are a sacred bond formed between a wolf and his mate. The Fates will send you a woman who completes you in every way. She makes the wolf stronger, she pulls you to earth like gravity, and the instant you lock eyes with her your soul will know. So unless this little girlfriend of yours has been sent to you by the Spirits, you will NOT continue this relationship. Is that understood?â Jared turned and walked outside, surely unable to control himself.
For the millionth time tonight, Paul couldnât believe what he was hearing. Mate? Like a soulmate? Who would be stuck with me? What if itâs⌠no it couldnât be Y/N⌠but what if it is?
Paulâs mind ran wild with a secret hope that you were his. He knew it was harsh to wish something like this when Jaredâs world was being torn apart. But selfishly, the hope that you would be his was keeping him from insanity.
And if you werenât his imprint, Paul silently prayed to the heavens that the Spirits would send his soon. He couldnât take this heartache much longer.
His train of thought drifted to the possible imprints of his pack brothers. âIs this why you havenât seen Emily yet?â Paul questioned his alpha. He knew Emily had been asking around for Sam; she was practically sick with worry. The older man dropped his head into his hands, âI canât bring myself to face her⌠I donât know what Iâd do if she isnât mine.â
Paul walked out to find Jared pacing the tree line. âDonât get any ideas, Lahoteâ Jared spat out, âY/N will be MY imprint. She has to be, I wonât just give up on her!â
Paul stood toe to toe with his best friend and squared his jaw. Heâd been holding back his rage all night and now it burst free like a coiled spring. The wolf scratching at Paulâs insides was itching for an outlet to pour his anger into.
Iâm not giving up without a fight.
âAnd if she isnât yours? Well, thereâs nothing you can do about it.â He whispered with a cocky grin. Paul kicked Jaredâs legs out from under him, pinning him to the forest floor with his fist. Jared threw knuckles at Paulâs face and the two began scuffling amongst the ferns. Both men shook with anger as the outlines of their bodies struggled to stay human. If they werenât careful this was going to be a blood bath.
âENOUGH! STOP ACTING LIKE CHILDREN, BOTH OF YOU!â The sound of an alpha order cut through the tension and both men had no option but to comply. âYou are not to speak to each other until tomorrow, is that clear?â Sam ordered and pulled Paul to his feet, marching them both deeper into the trees.
Lying in the woods behind the redwood cabin, the three men did their best to fall asleep. After the situation earlier, no one was getting any sleep anytime soon. Paul stared up at the early morning sky and thought of his life. Every memory was full of hardship and pain, and in 22 years, Paul had nothing good worth remembering. His mother was dead, his father was a drunk, and now he felt torn between the woman he loved and his pack brother. The messed up journey of loss and anger wasnât over, and in fact it had led to a life-altering curse. He felt as if he was paying for sins his soul had committed in a past life. âWhy me?â He whispered into the cool dawn air as he curled into himself and shut his eyes.
Reader POV
Two weeks.
It had been two weeks since youâd heard from Jared and you were an absolute mess. You were stuck living in autopilot, reliving the last night you saw him in your head.
The last kiss you shared with your boyfriend felt so rushed. You wished you could go back in time and embrace him properly, hold his face and press your lips to his until you melted into one being. But he wasnât here, you couldnât hold him, and he wasnât answering your texts. His absence spoke louder than any words could and it was eating you alive.
Why did I insist on going out?
Is he angry at me?
Does he even love me anymore?
God, I wish he would just talk to me.
âHey lazy bones, stop getting stuck in your head!â Leah poked you in the side and you shook your head to clear the insistent thoughts.
The sun was peaking through the clouds as the two of you were walking to First Beach. In the chaotic mess of recent events, Leah had been your beacon of hope. She had dragged you from bed almost everyday and like clockwork she always had something planned to keep you occupied. You did your best to stay present and appreciate everything Leah did for you; she really was your best friend.
âSorry Lee, I just canât stop worrying⌠What if thereâs something wrong with me?â You said in a small voice, trailing after her towards your destination. Leah linked her arm with yours and pulled you forward. âDonât say sorry and donât you dare say that! I wouldnât be friends with a loserâ She joked as you giggled. It felt nice to laugh. âItâs not your fault that boys are stupid. Jaredâs probably just sulking about Paul.â She said, and the mention of his name made your stomach clench.
As you hit the sand, three tall figures along the shore stuck out on the empty beach. Their large muscular backs were turned to you but somehow they felt familiar. âLee Lee, do we know those guys?â You asked, slowing your steps to take in the strangers appearances.
As you spoke, the three men went deathly still and stood taller; it was almost like theyâd heard your voice from a mile away. Thatâs silly. Iâm just imagining things, You dismissed and turned to Leah. Her face was screwed up like she was trying to make sense of what she was seeing. âI donât know girl, they seem really familiar though. The big one looks kinda like Samâ She said with a hint of confusion. As Leah spoke, the tallest man turned his head slowly and his eyes pierced through you. The wind in your lungs rushed out in disbelief as Sam Uley stood panicked in front of you. âWhat the FUCK! That is Sam!â Leah blurted out, anger starting to bubble up onto her facial features.
âDoes that mean⌠does that mean the other two are..â You wouldnât even get the question out but Leah knew exactly what you wanted to ask. Your knees wobbled with anxiety as she grabbed your arm and stalked towards the tall men. âIt better fucking not be! If those three are off playing happy family Iâm going to rip a hole in each one of them!â Leah was absolutely livid and you were on the verge of a panic attack. oh my god oh my god oh my god your chest was tight with worry and tears threatened to spill down your crumpled face.
As Leah dragged you down the beach, Sam pushed the other men behind him and stood menacingly staring down the two women barreling towards him. The men behind Sam refused to turn around but you knew exactly who it was. Bile threatened to erupt from your stomach, as Leah started screaming. This canât be happening!

Reader POV
It had been six days since the bonfire and no one had heard from Paul or Sam. The days had dragged on and the growing silence added to your overflowing anxiety. I canât believe I let this happen. This is all my fault. You spent most of your free time beating yourself up internally and silently snuggling up to Jared. Neither of you had the energy for outdoor activities, so movies in bed were becoming the new normal.
He did his best to shield you from how he felt, but you knew deep down he was angry and hurt by what had happened. He reassured you over and over again that it wasnât your fault, but god it was hard to believe. Jared had asked Paul to meet up with him everyday since the bonfire and everyday he was met with radio silence. This was the longest Paul had gone without speaking to Jared and the thought of them arguing made you feel sick.
To make matters worse, Sam had completely disappeared. The last time you spoke to him, you asked him to deliver the brownies to Paul and now he was missing in action. On one of your late night trips to the corner shop, youâd ran into his girlfriend Emily. She hadnât seen Sam since he left for the bonfire and the two of you stood for a long moment hugging in the freezer section. You exchanged numbers incase either of you heard anything about Sam, and made a silent promise to keep hope alive. That was three days ago and Emily still hadnât seen him. You couldnât help but think his absence was your fault. If you hadnât asked him to go see Paul, maybe heâd still be here.
Lying in your boyfriendâs warm bed, you decided to finally text Leah back.
Y/N: Hey girl, what are you doing tonight?
Leah: Sheâs alive! Thank God, I thought I was going to have to send a search party out to find you! Glad youâre finally texting me back, idiot x
You rolled your eyes but you knew she was right. Youâd been hiding from the world since the argument with Paul. You were hoping sheâd let you make it up to her.
Y/N: Yeah, yeah, Iâm sorry. Answer my question, are you free tonight or not??
Leah: Duh Iâm always free for you. What you got in mind?
Y/N: Wanna go for a couple drinks? I feel like we all need a night out. Jared should be good to go too.
Leah: Sounds like music to my ears! Iâll try and text Sam again but I doubt heâll come :/ fucker is being real weird lately.
Y/N: No oneâs seen him, not even Emily. If you hear anything lmk. Anyways, meet up at mine tonight around 7 x
âHey Baby, I was thinking maybe we could go for a drink with Leah tonight?â You sweetly asked Jared. He hadnât been up for much fun recently, but you wanted a reason to get out of the house and this was the perfect opportunity.
He rolled over and snuggled his head into your stomach, tracing lines over your thighs. âHmm⌠alright Beautiful, if you want to then iâll comeâ. He sat up and stretched his arms, his bed hair fanning out like a crown in crazy spikes around his head. âI should probably have a shower then. Itâs been days since weâve left this room, iâm starting to feel like a hermitâ he grumbled and rolled out of bed. You muffled your laughter in the blanket and watched as his naked body disappeared behind the bathroom door. âCute butt!â You called out to him and laughed even louder at his responding groan.
Maybe tonight will be good for us.
Pulling down the tight dress over your ass, you stepped outside to meet Leah. She stood on your porch with a bottle of half drank vodka and a big smile plastered to her face. âYou two look smokinâ! Ready for some fun?â She asked, turning to walk down to the Uber that was waiting on the curb.
You and Jared made an effort to look nice tonight - you in a short red dress that hugged every curve, and him in black jeans and a grey button up. âReady as weâll ever be, Lee. Letâs hit itâ Jared said, pulling you into the back seat.
The drive was short and you had no idea where you were going, but it was nice to be with your friends and it was nice to feel normal again. The Uber stopped in front of a rooftop bar youâd seen a few times whilst walking in town and you were excited. Colorful fairy lights were strung up on the dark stairs leading up to the venue and band posters covered every inch of the small hallway.
âIâm so glad we cameâ You whispered to Jared, taking his hand in yours and squeezing it lightly. He kissed the side of your mouth and continued following you up the stairs. As your little group rounded the corner and out the door to the bar, your eyes landed on a familiar head. For fucks sake.
On the opposite end of the outdoor area, Paul sat drunk out of his mind and surrounded by women. His face was covered in stubble, a cigarette hung from his lips, and his eyes were glazed over in a way that told you he hadnât been sober in days. It was obvious he wasnât doing well and you felt bad for him, but you came out tonight to lift everyoneâs spirits - not drag them down even further. You tore your eyes away from the sad scene and urged Jared and Leah to sit in a booth that obscured their view of Paul in the smokers area.
âWho wants a drink? Iâm buying!â You said quickly, praying neither of them would leave the table. âIâm thinking a large long island each?â You continued, hoping a massive amount of liquor would help you all loosen up. âWoman after my own heart! I knew I loved you for a reason, Y/Nâ Leah said, fake swooning over the table. Jared laughed and nodded along. Thank the Lord, you said to yourself.
After a few drinks youâd completely forgotten about Paul⌠until you found yourself in the smokers section. Sitting in Jaredâs lap as he and Leah spoke about some TV show they loved, you enjoyed the buzzing feeling of being drunk. Whilst sucking the life out of a cigarette your eyes wandered around the outdoor area until they met the dark angry abyss of Paulâs stare. Your breath was stuck in your throat and you couldnât stop staring. His jaw was tense and his whole body was turned to face yours. Paul completely ignored whatever the girl next to him said as he watched you wiggle uncomfortably in Jaredâs lap. Please donât come over here. Please donât come over here. Please donât come over here. You wished in that moment that you could climb inside your boyfriendâs shirt and hide. If only it was that easy.
Jared placed a kiss on the side of your neck and wrapped his arm around your waist, âYou ok baby? You cold or something?â He whispered in your ear. Coughing up a cloud of smoke as he brought you out of your staring contest, you shook your head. âN-no baby, iâm fine everythingâs fineâ You tried to sound normal but the nervous edge in your voice was noticeable.
Leah followed your line of sight and her mouth dropped open as she too stared at Paul. His face was crumpled and painful to look at. It was like you had personally rained on his parade. âFuck me, Jared your best bud looks like shitâ Leah said, nodding her head in Paulâs direction.
Your previously calm boyfriend went stiff under you, as his head swivelled in the direction you were staring. âGuess he has enough time to get wasted but not enough time for his best friendâ Jared said bitterly. Youâd never heard him sound so cold before and your stomach dropped with worry.
Paul sat up straighter and continued to tense his jaw. Jared swiftly placed you on the seat next to him and kissed your lips, âIâm going to have a chat with him, baby. Iâll be back in a second I promise. Make sure you and Leah stay together ok?â And before you could answer he was up and striding towards Paul.
As Jared bent down to speak in his best friendâs ear, the latter never took his eyes off you. It was like he was cataloging the way you looked. The two of them stood and stalked out of the bar and down the stairs. You held onto hope that Jared really would be back in a few seconds but the rational part of your brain highly disagreed.
âYour man will be fine donât stress. Paul deserves to get the shit kicked out of him anyway.â Leah giggled and then stopped when you stayed silent. âCome on girl, put that pretty smile back on and letâs get some shots!â Leah said excitedly, trying her best to keep the mood light.
Two hours passed and neither man had returned from their âchatâ. Your body was full to the brim with tequila and sadness and all you wanted to do was run after Jared. No matter how many times Leah pulled you onto the dance floor, you were drunk, sad, and in a world of your own. You couldnât move to the beat of the music even if you wanted to. He left.
âI think itâs time to go Lee Lee⌠heâs not coming backâ You said as your bottom lip quivered. You didnât want to believe it but your gut was telling you he didnât plan on returning and there was no point in staying.
Hours later, you were lying in bed whilst your mind was crammed full of questions. Tears spilled onto your pillow as you drifted to sleep.
Paul POV
Seeing you amongst the drunk strangers was sobering for Paul. What the fuck is she doing here?! he panicked, watching you squirm in Jaredâs lap. Seeing the way your head lulled to the side as Jared placed a kiss to your neck had his fists itching for a fight. Those should be my lips, he grimaced.
Heâd only been staring at you for a few minutes, but just like that, the anger he fought to hide came bubbling up all over again. Paul spent days ignoring his friends, drinking himself blind, waking up on the floor of his dadâs shed, and doing his best to forget why he was doing it in the first place. Yet here you were, his beautiful problem, staring at him like youâd seen a ghost. Your red dress hardly covered the expanses of your thighs as you wiggled in your seat and the hard on in his jeans was starting to react to your doe eyed expression. Paul barely noticed his best friend had already dropped you onto the chair and was walking towards him.
Paul was brought back to reality as the hard voice of his friend muttered in his ear, âYou. Me. Outside. Nowâ He did his best to follow Jared down the stairs without tripping. It had been a few days since heâd drank anything other than alcohol and Paul was really feeling it tonight.
The cold evening air hit his face and thankfully he felt slightly more prepared for whatever Jared had to say to him. Continuing to follow the other man around the side of the building, Paul stopped a foot away as Jared turned and squared his shoulders.
âI thought we were friends, Paul⌠I thought you were my brotherâ Jared said, clamping his teeth shut like he was holding himself back.
âWhat the fuck is that supposed to mean?! We are friends! You are my brother!â Paul slurred out, anger pushing past his patience.
Jared stepped closer and pushed Paulâs shoulders, causing him to stumble. âThen what the hell is wrong with you? Why canât you pick up the fucking phone and settle this shit like men?â
The close proximity was full of rage and heat - literal heat. The pair were radiating blistering warmth as they stared each other down.
Jaredâs brow knitted together as he continued, âYouâve been acting like a spoilt shit ever since I got a girlfriend. You ignore her and if she speaks youâre absolutely horrible to her when all she does is try to include you and be your friend. And on top of ALL of that, you canât even talk to me!â His fists were clenched and his shoulders were shaking.
Paul bit his tongue till his mouth filled with the coppery taste of blood. He couldnât answer Jared. He simply couldnât do it.
Jared steamed with fury as he blurted out, âIf you hate her that fucking much why havenât you said anything to me? TALK TO ME GODDAMMIT!!â
Paul saw red. Swinging his fist at Jared, he felt a ripple of heat shoot through his spine. âI DONâT HATE HER. I HATE YOU, JARED CAMERON!â he growled and continued to punch his best friend, âYOU GET EVERYTHING. A GREAT LIFE, A FAMILY, AND NOW YOU GET THE BEST FUCKING WOMAN IâVE EVER KNOWN!â
Jaredâs face was covered in blood but he finally fought back, hatred evident in his low blows at Paulâs stomach and kidneys. He couldnât stop himself from throwing punch after punch into his drunk friend.
âYOUâRE JEALOUS??â He snarled at Paul whilst spitting blood onto the pavement.
âY/N is mine. Youâll never have anyone whoâs anywhere close to how amazing she is.â Jared sneered, âYou donât deserve someone like her.â Paul threw himself at Jared and the pair rolled through the alley into the surrounding forest.
Fists and shouting turned into paws and growls as the men burst through their human skin and fought a battle of epic proportions.
WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING?! Paul thought to himself.
Releasing the throat of an animal from his large jaws, Paul stepped back and thought he was going to pass out. He was a wolf. A full blown, horse-sized, wolf. And there was an equality confused wolf stood before him.
Paul⌠is that you? a voice echoed in his brain.
What the fuck. what the fuck. holy shit. Paulâs brain was on loop as he tried to understand what the hell just happened. Wait, Jared?
Holy shit dude what the hell happened to us!Jared thought.
The fight was long forgotten and Paul tried his best to stay calm. As the pair circled each other a booming voice rattled through their minds.

Reader POV
Taking a deep breath, you dragged your eyes away from Paulâs. The mixture of anxiety and shock on his face wasnât helping the pit of worry swirling in your stomach.
He grabbed a brownie and closed his eyes as he chewed it. His frowning features relaxed and you thought this was a good time to say every hard truth that had been swimming through your brain for 10 months.
âI know weâve never had a real conversation before but⌠I just wanted to get to know you. I⌠Iâm not that bad, i promiseâ, you whispered into the cool afternoon air. His body went stiff and the brownie fell from his hand. This was it - the moment youâve been dreading. Paul was going to shut you down and youâd be back at square one. Instead of letting him speak, you continued rambling, âIf thereâs something iâve done wrong please tell me. Iâm trying really hard - and maybe my effort isnât enough - but I just want us to be ok with each other. Jared means the world to me and youâre the most important person in his life and -.â
Before you could run out of air, Paul stood up towering over you with clenched fists. âYou didnât do anything wrong. Just let it goâ He said in a cutthroat tone that left very little room for arguing. His face scrunched up and you thought he was going to lose it.
Paul walked away from the bonfire and you stood to follow him. It was now or never, so in a small voice you said, âIf you think Jared deserves better, Iâm doing my bes-â Paul sharply turned around, causing you to slam right into his hard chest.
âTHATâS WHAT YOU THINK?! THAT I DONâT APPROVE OF YOU?!â He yelled in a deep growl, and everyone went silent. You were stuck in place, body against his, staring into the dark abyss of his eyes. His pupils were blown wide and you felt lost in the sea of his emotions - emotions you couldnât quite place. Steam was practically spraying out of his nose with every deep breath he took and through clenched teeth he spoke one last time, ââŚjust let it go Y/N.â
Lord, kill me now!!! Your mind was screaming and you could taste the anxiety on your tongue. The only thing stopping you from throwing up at his feet was the tiny bit of pride you had left.
Before you could crumble to the floor, Sam and Jared rushed over and pushed Paul away from you. Standing behind them both you felt small and defeated. âLeave her the FUCK alone, Lahote!!â Sam bellowed, shoving Paul further away from the group. Jared curled you into his arms and stroked your hair as you shook.
Sneering to himself Paul looked over the friends stood around you, âWhatever. I donât need thisâ. And with that, he left.
âYou ok, sweetie?â Leah whispered as she lead you back to the fire. You felt like you were having an out of body experience. Youâd never been so scared and ashamed in your life - you poked the bear and he bit you.
Jared pulled you onto his lap and everyone sat watching you with sympathetic faces. âYeah Lee, Iâm ok,â you said as your bottom lip quivered, looking up at Jared âIâm sorry, I just wanted him to be my friend too. Heâs so important to you.â
Jared kissed your hairline and rested his cheek on your shoulder, âNo baby donât apologise, heâs messed up in the head itâs not your fault. I know you try so hard, shhhhh.â Tears were running down your face and your loving boyfriend did his best to swipe them away.
What have I done?
The energy was tense and unforgiving, and no light joking or banter from your friends could wash it away. Unsurprisingly, the bonfire ended shortly after and you spent the car ride home replaying the shit storm in your head. I canât believe it. Why do I have to stick my nose in everything? Your brain was shutting down and all you could do was silently pray that things would get better. If Jared and Paul had an argument you would never forgive yourself.
Paul POV
Blow, after blow, the trees surrounding Paul met their doom. Sap stung his bloody knuckles as they continued their assault on the innocent pine trees, but Paul couldnât stop.
Not even his screams of emotional agony could drown out the looping memories of what heâd done.
Iâm fucking worthless
*punch*
I knew I didnât deserve her
*punch*
Sheâs never going to forgive me
*punch*
Falling to his knees, he thought of how nice it felt to have you pressed against him and Paul was sickened with himself. Even though you were stood there because of his harsh words, a small part of him was overjoyed to be so close to you.
âWHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH ME?!â he screamed into the faint shower of rain falling around his kneeling body. He knew what he had to do to get rid of this pain and he would crawl there if he had to. Paul had to get drunk and get laid. And he had to do it fast.
Dragging his feet through the door of the dive bar, he ignored the loud group of regulars calling his name. He was in no mood for their presence.
âfour shots, top shelf.â he bit out at the bartender, taking a seat on a rickety stool and grabbing a bar towel to wrap his knuckles.
A tall brunette stalked over and took the seat next to him, âRough day, handsome?â She pulled a long sip of her beer and looked Paul up and down. âYeah, something like thatâ he said, trying his best to smirk at her. As much as he wanted to be alone, Paul needed to forget.
Finishing his shots, he ordered another round and pulled his stool closer to hers. âSo whatâs your story, beautiful? Why you hanging around a place like this?â He purred at her, placing a shot in her hand.
Before she could answer, a loud cough sounded behind Paul. âGood to see your upset about what you did today.â Sam said in a bitterly sarcastic tone. Paul shut his eyes and braced himself - he came here to forget not to be painfully reminded.
Without turning around, Paul spoke over his shoulder, âGet out of here Sam, Iâm a little busy with my lady friend here.â As he winked at the brunette his chair was roughly spun around and he was now eye to eye with the angry face of Sam Uley.
âWhat the fuck is your problem, Paul?â
âMY problem? What the fuck is YOUR problem, Uley? Canât you see Iâm busy here?â
Sam was shaking so much his teeth were chattering in his skull. âGet up right now. Weâre going to drive to Y/Ns house and you are going to apologise LIKE AN ADULT!â He screamed in Paulâs face, pointing a shaky finger at him.
Paul was on the verge of slamming Samâs face onto the bar when the older man dropped a large container of brownies into Paulâs hands.
âAfter everything you said to her this afternoon, she made me promise to bring these to you. Youâre an absolute piece of shit and she STILL wants to be your friend⌠Grow the fuck up, man.â Sam said, walking back through the doors to the parking lot. Paulâs heart officially stopped beating.
Looking down at the brownies his eyes caught on a small note stuck to the lid. âIâm Sorryâ written in your unmistakable handwriting.
Iâm such a fucking idiot
In that moment, shame and pride bubbled up in his stomach and all he could do was get angrier. His ego was hurt and he had no one to blame but himself, but Paul did what he does best - he directed that hurt at someone who didnât deserve it. Standing from the bar, he followed Sam out into the night and let his emotions run wild.
âYou think you can tell me what to do? Huh? Think you can tell me what Iâm supposed to feel?â He said, poking Sam in the back with as much force as he could. âYou donât get to tell me shit, Uley, I can say and do whatever the FUCK I want to her!â The liquor was clouding Paulâs vision and he would rather die than lose this argument.
âYou think that acting like a fucking prick is helping you? You think it hides the fact that you fucking love her!â Sam screamed, spinning around and clocking Paul in the jaw with a right hook. His face felt numb as he stood there shell-shocked. The wind was taken out of his sails and all Paul could do was open and close his mouth.
âI⌠I donât know what youâre talking about man.â he mumbled.
Sam started vibrating with anger, âYouâre not even man enough to admit it! I see the way you look at her, Paul, Iâm not stupid!â
ShitâŚFUCK. What if Jared knows? He shook his head to clear his thoughts and turned away from Sam. âItâs none of your goddamn business. And itâs not like I can do anything about it so just shut up and leave me alone!â
Sam put a hand to his head and stumbled backwards, âI need to get out of here. Iâm starting to feel like shit and your pathetic excuses arenât helping.â he bitterly remarked. Still shaking and now dripping with sweat, Sam got into his Toyota and sped off.
As Paul turned to walk back inside, his phone buzzed.
Jared: Hey man, we need to talk.
Anxiety seeped through his veins and all he could do was shut his phone off. I need to get laid right fucking now, he said to himself.
Minutes later, Paul stood in the handicap stall of the dive bar with his hands threaded through dark brown hair. The brunette from earlier was eager enough to show him a good time, and he was drunk enough to ask for it.
As she hungrily swallowed his length, Paul thought about you. I hope sheâs alright, I hope she doesnât hate me forever, I hope one day I can watch her suck my cock till her eyes water
Hearing the tall brunette moaning below him, he shut his eyes and saw your angelic face staring back at him behind his eyelids. The image of you on your knees, drool spilling over his hard member, had Paul shooting down the back of this other womanâs throat. âOh shit, babyâ he groaned. He felt bad for thinking about you like that after everything that happened today, but he needed you so badly that he couldnât cum any other way. He couldnât even get hard without thinking about you.

Reader POV
You woke up feeling tired after a sleepless night. The bonfire was quickly approaching and you wanted to be fully prepared.
You tried not to worry about ruining your chance to finally connect with Paul. Jared meant so much to you, he was there for you through many ups and downs and you would do anything to make him happy. He was your first serious boyfriend and that meant getting along with every person in his life - even if it was hard.
If I can get one smile and a few sentences from Paul today Iâll be happy, you said to yourself, jumping out of bed and sliding across the hallway to the bathroom.
After a warm shower, you sat on the back porch with a coffee and a book. The warmth from morning sunlight had always given you peace and today you needed as much help as you could get. As you walked back inside your phone buzzed.
Leah: Hey sexy, iâll be at your place in 20mins.
You smiled at her text and ran upstairs to change into a comfy crop top and a pair of Jaredâs basketball shorts.
âYour queen has arrived, Y/N!â Leah shouted from downstairs. You walked down to find her stretched across the couch.
âOh thank goodness, I was worried Iâd have no one to watch me cookâ, you giggled as she threw a cushion at you.
âSo whatâs on the menu today, master chef?â She said flipping through TV channels.
Curling up near her feet on the end of the couch, you tried to look like you were thinking. If you were being honest, youâd stayed up most of the night planning the perfect meal. âHmmm I was thinking beef nachos, fruit salad, and choc caramel browniesâ You said pulling up the recipes on your phone.
âYummmm Iâm getting hungry just thinking about it! You better make two batches of those brownies though, theyâre Paulâs favorite and heâs a greedy pigâ Leah warned you as she opened a soda she mustâve snuck from your refrigerator. You knew they were Paulâs favorite and thatâs exactly why you were making them. If I want him to open up to me Iâve got to make an effort.
Hours flew by and before you knew it your kitchen counter was covered in Tupperware containers bursting at the seams. Ok so maybe you went overboard, but you wanted to spoil your friends.
âGood Lord, is all of this going to fit in Jaredâs car? You know I can always sample a few to make roomâŚâ Leah tried to reason with you, as you swatted her hand away from the nachos for the millionth time.
âNope! No snacking until you help me find the perfect outfitâ you snickered, making her roll her eyes and unwillingly follow you up to your room.
Piles of clothes were scattered across your hardwood floors and panic was setting in.
What color would Jared like the most? How much skin is too much skin? Should I just give up and wear a potato sack?!
In the end you settled on high waisted jean shorts, a white triangle bikini, and a blue long sleeve shirt left unbuttoned. Leah reassured you that the outfit was modest enough to relax around the fire and sexy enough for swimming, so you smiled and gave in.
This was the first sunny day of the season and you wanted to soak up as much sun and sand as you could.
Arms full of food and beach towels, you followed Jared and Leah to his Volkswagen. âBaby you look perfect, the food smells great, and todayâs gonna be amazing. Stop stressing.â He smiled down at you and placed a calming kiss on your forehead. Gazing up at his handsome face, you felt so lucky to have him.
You couldnât admit that the reason for your stress was the talk you were going to have with Paul, so instead you slipped into the car and quietly waited for the drive to begin. You didnât want to worry your boyfriend with your silly social anxiety. Thankfully, Jared and Leahâs loud carpool karaoke meant they hardly noticed your silence.
I hope Paul likes the brownies. Maybe I can offer the recipe and see where the conversation goes... Your game plan was starting to come together, you just needed the confidence to pull it off. Today you would win over Paul Lahote.
Paul POV
Paul stood on the course sand at First Beach, kicking the soccer ball back and forth with Sam. He tried his hardest to ignore the odd looks his older friend was sending his way. If he wasnât careful Paul knew he was going to get an earful.
Waking up in the garage of his dadâs house with a hangover was a rough start to a day that was only going to get worse, and he was in no mood for Samâs nagging.
âYou going to play nice today?â Sam casually asked, volleying the soccer ball high into the air.
Here we fucking go, he thought to himself. Rolling his eyes in Samâs direction, he decided not to take the bait. The last thing he wanted to do was play pretend, but he was too tired for a fight.
âI donât know what youâre talking about man, iâm always nice.â Paul shot back with a cocky grin,âSome would even say iâm an angel.â
Sam shook his head in quiet disagreement but decided not to call Paul on his bullshit.
âMhm sure. Just try to give Y/N a break. Sheâs actually really great when you get to know herâ, the mention of your name made Paulâs heart ache.
Great?! Great is the understatement of the century, sheâs fucking wonderful!
Paul did his best to keep his voice calm and remember how to breathe again. âYeah, yeah, iâm sure she is. Doesnât mean I have to pick flowers and skip around with her, Sammy boy.â The sound of a car parking nearby pulled them out of their conversation and Paul was thankful for the distraction.
The relief he felt was instantly replaced with gut-wrenching panic as his eyes traveled over your body. FUCK ME, WHY?! he internally screamed, heart pounding out of his chest painfully. He had no strength to muffle the groan that escaped his lips.
In that very moment, a bomb couldâve gone off right next to Paul and he wouldnât have batted an eyelid. He was too busy memorising the beautiful woman in front of him. Your jean shorts cupped the shape of your ass, the blue shirt complimented your smooth skin, and the tiny white bikini top was practically plastered to your perfect chest. One wrong move and the nipples Paul had been dreaming about would be on show for his hungry eyes.
The sight of you brightly smiling and waving at him across the parking lot had Paul on the brink of passing out. It felt like every ounce of blood in his body pooled in his crotch and he struggled to hide the excitement in his swim shorts.
Lord have Mercy.
Paul was definitely going to hell.
Jared grabbed a handful of your backside and walked past to handle the rest of the food Leah couldnât carry. Paul had a hard time deciding if he should drool over the way your ass bounced, or fly into a blind rage at the way Jared touched you. It had been less than 5 minutes and poor Paul already looked like he was ready to choke someone.
Everyone was gathered around the firewood, that the boys had placed on the beach earlier that day, and the food youâd prepared was piled high. Paul clapped Jared on the shoulder, nudged Leah with his elbow, and nodded his head in your direction. That was the best greeting he could give. (The fact he acknowledged you without moaning was a win in his books.)
Sam kicked the ball towards Jared, who was sporting a shit eating grin. âAlright dickheads, ready for me to wipe the floor with you?â Jared called out, flicking the soccer ball up with his foot and catching it. The boys started walking towards the beach but stopped as you jogged up to Jared. âHold on, Babe, I need a hand with the sunscreenâ You said, handing him the bottle. Leah giggled strolling over to the group, âDonât have to ask him twice. Havenât seen him take his hands off her in monthsâshe stage-whispered to Sam. Jared wiggled his eyebrows at the pair and you giggled into your hand.
Paul practically tripped over himself as you took off your shirt. You were so close he could smell the heavenly scent of your perfume and his mouth hung wide open. Watching Jared stand behind you as his hands smoothed over your collarbone and down between your breasts was worse than death.
He felt the anger deep in his soul and shook with silent rage. He loved Jared like a brother but he really didnât want to imagine where heâs touched you. Every inch of Paulâs mind and body craved you and it was getting harder to watch his best friend enjoy what he wanted. Iâm gonna kick his ass at this match and then weâll see who the real man is, he wickedly thought.
Clearing his throat, Paul turned towards the sand, âY/N, If youâre done distracting Jared, weâve got a soccer game to start. Iâm sure you can occupy yourself.â Everything he said to you always came out wrong, but that was just horrible. The look of embarrassment on your face was almost as bad as the look of anger on Jaredâs.
Sam pushed past him and Jared gave you a quick kiss before grabbing Paul by the arm and dragging him away to finally play soccer. âWhat the fuck man? Chill out, thatâs my girlfriend youâre talking to. Y/N tried really hard to make us a nice meal today, the least you could do is not chew her head off!â Jared grumbled in his ear. Paul rolled his eyes and nodded his head because, at this point, he couldnât trust his words.
Every now and then Paul would miss a goal as he secretly caught glimpses of you and Leah bobbing around in the calm ocean waves. It sounded like you were having a good time, and Paul wanted to soak up your laughter as it carried through the warm breeze. He really didnât understand how Jared wasnât attached to your hip.
As the sun settled low in the afternoon sky, the boys finally called it quits and decided to grab some food. You were sat on the ground with your back pressed against a fallen log whilst whispering with Leah. Paul tried damn hard to ignore whatever you were saying. Sitting down to start the fire, he caught your gaze as you quickly sat up straight and exhaled a long shaky breath. Is she ok? he worried to himself. Maybe he shouldnât have been so rude to you earlier. Paul had so many conflicting emotions today he was surprised he didnât have whiplash.
âY/NNNN, weâre hungryyyyyâ Jared whined, throwing himself down next to you. You pushed a hand through his hair and giggled, âFine, Iâll show it all off before you boys devour it!â You stood to open the containers and Paulâs eyes followed you closely from across the fire.
âSo iâve got fruit salad if anyone wants a light snack, beef nachos with extra guacamole, andâŚâ You looked up and locked eyes with Paul, making his breath catch in his throat. It felt like you were talking only to him. âI made chocolate caramel brownies for dessert. Jared said they were your favorite so I made lotsâ You ducked your head nervously and Paul thought he could cry. YOU made HIS favorite dessert. No one had ever baked for him before. He didnât even know his friends cared enough to remember his favorite anything, and now his favorite girl stood before him with arms full of his favorite food. It might seem small, but no one had ever thought Paul was worth the effort before.
Everyone else stared at Paul, hoping he wouldnât fuck this up. âOh⌠Thank you, Y/N thatâs very kind of you.â he awkwardly said, looking anywhere but at you. Your head shot up and a look of pure shock was painted across your wide eyes and faint smile. This is what she was worried about? God sheâs adorable. Holding eye contact with you, Paul felt a lopsided smile pull at his mouth.
âI swear to God, if iâm not fed in the next two seconds iâll go crazyâ Leah complained, snapping Paul out of his daze.
Plates of your delicious food were balanced on each persons lap. Between mouthfuls, everyone loudly agreed about how good it all tasted. Paul sat silently, imagining you standing in his kitchen making his brownies.
He choked on a tortilla chip in pure shock as you sat on the log beside him. You jumped in surprise and started softly smacking his back to stop his coughing.
Jesus Christ, Paul itâs just a girl! What am I, 12?!
âThanks, I uh... I swallowed a chip sidewaysâ, he mumbled at you and stared down at his plate. The sound of your giggles directly in Paulâs ear caused goosebumps to travel the length of his body.
âI hope youâre ok.â You said patting his shoulder and looking into his eyes. Paul noticed youâd never been this close to him before and he couldnât understand why youâd want to.
The confidence in your body language started to fade as you held out a Tupperware container âI wanted to offer you the first brownie and maybe have a chat.â

Paul POV
God sheâs beautiful he thought to himself.
Watching your eyes shine in the fluorescent diner lights as laughter fell effortlessly from your lips was like torture for Paul. Hearing your voice was even more painful, knowing he would be hanging onto every word. And to make matters even worse, daydreaming about you was his favorite pastime - you were a masterpiece and Paul couldnât get enough.
Maybe I could ask her to come to our next soccer game, he thought as images of you in his soccer jersey filled his mind.
Paul snapped back to reality as your lips pressed against the cheek of his best friend, and in that moment he felt white hot jealousy ripple through his chest. 10 months of sitting on the sidelines, whilst Jared Cameron lived the life he wanted, was really taking a toll on him.
âPaul, did you hear me?â You called out to him. His head spun across the table to meet your waiting eyes. His heart was jumping as you spoke his name but he had to play it cool.
Iâm Paul fucking Lahote, i can handle a little crush.
âWhat do you want, Y/N?â he asked in a rough tone, trying to hide his embarrassment.
Heat flushed your face and your eyes fell to the floor. Paul instantly knew heâd upset you.
Real Smooth, Lahote, he chastised himself.
âI⌠I was just asking what you want me to bring for the bonfire tomorrow, since iâm on cooking dutyâ you said, twisting your hands in your lap. Jared wrapped a comforting arm around you and shot daggers at Paul over your slumped shoulders.
He knew Jared would give him shit later for upsetting you, but Paul would beat himself up far worse than anything Jared could do.
âJeez Paul, who spat in your milkshake?â Leah snickered and flicked a fry at him across the table. Sam shook his head but continued eating his burger.
Paul shot an angry expression at Leah and turned back to you, trying his best to look uninterested.
âWhatever you want I donât careâ He spat out quickly and stood to leave. âSee you guys tomorrowâ, he muttered over his shoulder before anyone could speak.
Your quiet laughter filled the space behind his retreating figure and Paulâs heart ached knowing that you felt better in his absence.
Reader POV
After dinner at the diner Jared drove you home, one hand on the wheel and the other wrapped around your thigh.
Staring out the window, thoughts of tomorrowâs bonfire were swimming through your head. Your friends were planning to meet up at La Push for a bonfire, some swimming and whatever fun outdoor activities they could think of. It had been a while since the last one so you wanted to impress with your cooking skills.
Leah promised to come over early to pick your outfit and âhelpâ you cook the snacks youâd need to bring. As pushy and snarky as she was, you were grateful. She always had your back, and at the end of the day, she really was a good friend. Thinking of her had your mind drifting over the rest of your group.
Sam was easy going and supportive of you and Jared. You saw him as an older brother you could lean on. Paul however, was a complete mystery to you. He was always lingering on the edges - cocky, distant, and ignoring your existence. You didnât know what youâd done for him to hate you so much, but you did your best to make up for it. He had been Jaredâs best friend since the day they were born and you felt like you needed Paulâs approval.
Pulling up in your driveway, Jared turned to you with a worried expression on his face. âY/N, you doing ok, sweetheart? Youâre not still thinking about what Paul said are you?â He placed your chin in his hand and smoothed his fingers along your cheek. âHeâs just a bit of an asshole, donât let him get you downâ, Jared cooed at you.
âIâm ok Jar, really, just tired and thinking about what to cook for tomorrow.â You gave him a reassuring smile and kiss his parted lips before getting out of the car.
Over the last 10 months, Paulâs dislike for you had slowly chipped away at your confidence but you couldnât tell Jared. You would never want to cause issues between your boyfriend and his best friend.
Maybe tomorrow I can get Paul to talk to me, you thought to yourself as you turned over in bed that night. A smile crept onto your face as you tried your best to drift off to sleep.
Paul POV
Slamming through the front door, Paul felt right at home in the sticky and dimly lit bar. Everyone knew his name, every bartender knew his order, and every girl knew his number by heart.
A tall blonde leaning against the bar adjusted her push up bra and gave him a smile she must have thought was attractive.
Which one is that? Fuck⌠Joanna? Rachel? Ah, who gives a shit he thought as he sat and ordered four shots of whiskey. Today was rough and heâd do anything to forget for a while.
âHey baby, why havenât you returned my calls?â, the blonde whispered in his ear. She smelt like dollar store body spray and cheap white wine but Paul was happy to entertain her.
Downing his last shot he turned to her and smirked, âSorry sugar, Iâve been busy. Is there any way I can make it up to you?â He wrapped his arm around her waist and pushed his hand a few inches up the back of her pink tank top.
She giggled and placed both hands on his chest,âMy cars out back, maybe you can help me pump the tires?â
Swallowing the sick feeling in his throat, Paul landed a sloppy kiss on her lips and pulled her through the doors to the parking lot. If he had to fuck the first girl he saw, he would do it. Anything was better than thinking of how you sat in Jaredâs lap earlier today.
His hands traveled over her hard nipples and down to her wet folds as she straddled him in the back seat of her Mercedes. Grabbing his throbbing member he guided her down in a practiced motion. Paul never bothered with foreplay or taking it slow. He let the alcohol do the talking.
âFuck Pauly, take me hard!â she screamed in a whiny voice that made him want to roll his eyes. He hated that nickname and he hated himself for not pushing her off and leaving.
As they both reached closer to climax, he did his best to get it over with. Dropping his head back, he grabbed her tight ass as she slammed down on his girth. At this point he knew what was coming next - it was starting to become a part of his usual hookup routine.
Paulâs most prized fantasy of you, whimpering and stretched around his cock, flashed behind his closed eyelids. Y/N look what you do to me, he groaned to himself. Imagining your voice crying out his name sent him over the edge. Fuck.
Walking home tipsy later that night, he fought off the memories of your sad face from dinner. He did his best to keep his distance from you, but the look of innocence and sadness in your beautiful eyes made him want to drop to his knees and beg your forgiveness.
As much as he craved to hear your laugh and be the man making you smile, Paul knew he had nothing to offer you. Nothing he could give you would ever be better than Jared.
Jared had family, a steady career and a promising future. Paul had a deadbeat dad, a crappy construction job, and barely had a 6 month plan for his life.
Reality sucked and he knew he would never be worthy of your time - a fact that burnt the inside of his brain and made him furious.
Thereâs no point in apologising, he tried to reason with himself, Itâs better if she thinks i hate her⌠right?
