âMan you have a potty mouth, Cap isnât going to like you.â Tony teased, slightly sobering up. Cap was going to have his hide for drinking anyways. But that was something for another time. The fact that she didnât recognize him was hilarious in his book. Then again, she was in pain. Itâs not like she could focus enough to realize who he is. On the other hand, she really might not know who he is. Hearing a familiar sound, Tony smirked as his armor pod landed behind him.
The metal contraption opened up allowing Tony to step in. âThe nameâs Tony Stark, but you can call me.â One armor suit up later. âIron Man.â
The Pod took off, as he stepped over to her in his Iron Man suit. âLetâs get you to the nearest hospital, sunshine.â
What the hell was he talking about? Who was Cap? Come to think of it, he wasnât repulsed by her octopus and grizzly bear additions. Was he American?
If she had more pronounced ears they would move toward the sound of the ridiculous contraption. Ah, look at that, her eyes were complete shit. Lovely.
This is what she got for not keeping her human eyes during the shift and -- she squinted --Â woooow she really fucked up. Were her eyes a mixture of octopus and bear? She was legally blind. Just perfect.
Sheâd just... not say that she technically didnât see what was no doubt an impressive suit-up. She kind of did. It wouldnât have the grandiose of a humanâs admittedly flawed sight. An octopus had no colour cones whatsoever. Could differentiate light way better than a person but it was all grays. Bear eyes were crap for seeing reds and oranges, which she knew made up the majority of Iron Manâs suit colours.
âHeard of the second guy.â Lina muttered breathily when he announced both his names, taking a moment to breathe with her limited lung capacity. It would hurt too much if she breathed deeply. If she could without causing more internal whatevers, sheâd laugh at how she just snapped at a member of the Avengers of all people. Yay for first impressions. Why stop now? âNever heard of the first guy. This is Vancouver, Lushbot. Youâre not going to find Alpha Flight anywhere near here.â
Linaâs body stiffened as he approached. She was prepared for pain. Even in that fancy suit of his would he really be able to pick her up all that gently? She doubted it.

Bar hopping wasnât something Tony did often, but when he did, he always woke up with someone hot in some place he probably own. But he wasnât quiet there yet and honestly he didnât think he was going to get there. Being a hero, a scientist, a playboyâŚwell, he wasnât that much of a playboy. Sure heâs slept with a lot of women before both human and alien and all points in between, but he only considered only a few of them really mattered.
Thus he wasnât exactly surprised when he noticed a red head going through what seemed a failed transformation. He wasnât exactly fully drunk either so either her powers were malfunctioning or he found a new kink he wasnât sure he could get into.
âHey you alright there kid?â Tony asked slipping a bluetooth device into his ear. âWait, dumb question. JARVIS, whatâs my blood alcohol level?â
[High enough that you could get arrested for drunk driving, sir.]
âGood think Iâm not going to drive then.â He replied. âBring the Mark VI around.â
[Itâs on route sir.]
Satisfied, Tony spoke to the girl. âHey, donât worry kid, Iâll get you some help.â
She could hear him before she could see him. Hell, she could smell him before she could see him. He reeked of alcohol. Her body tensed as the figure approached, likely having seen her as she ducked into the alley. She grunted in response to the tensing, sending a sharp jab of pain through her body, particularly her chest region where her broken ribs were.
A low rumble grew in her throat as he approached, all animal instinct to a strange being approaching when injured. The tentacles that protruded from her sides curled in discontent as he did and the patches of fur on her body stood on end. Still, she didnât move. It had been years since she disassociated and she still wasnât quite there yet. Then again, it had been years since she screwed up this bad.
Linaâs eyes narrowed as the man asked if she was alright. Was this idiot blind or was his lack of sobriety really that bad that... this was considered alright? He corrected himself quickly, but the pain made her ornery.
âIâm fucking dandy. Feel like a trillion bucks. I donât--â A harsh hiss as a stab of pain shot through her body. Something was wanting to move but sheâd be damned if whatever it was would be kind enough to not slide together like the frigginâ continental plates to do it. âKnow what made you think otherwise.â
Her voice was laced with sarcasm.
He seemed to be talking to someone on the other side of his bluetooth set. Deep down she knew she should be grateful to this stranger. He was bringing an ambulance or something. Her mind screamed at her to just thank him, but another part of her stubbornly wanted him to leave. He was invading on her personal space. He was intruding where he had no business to. Sheâd gone through this before! She wasnât helpless!
Then again, better him than some lowlife. Her growling quieted down. Sheâd mostly be silent except for the laboured breathing and occasional whimpers of pain. Though there was the one question that entered her distracted mind as she studied this drunkard:Â âThe fuck are you?â
âGreat. Now Iâve really done it.â
Lina managed to drag herself into a dark alleyway, away from any light the dark streets might have given. She was breathing heavily, exhales frequented with vocal additions. She moved slowly, leaning heavily against the wall of the brick and concrete buildings. What little light she would cross under would reveal red hair and light human skin mixed with rubbery skin, brown fur and extra limbs.
She had been injured during this nightly excursion. While she didnât have a healing factor, she had something of a cheat: If she could change into a boneless creature and upon turning back into her human form, her bones would reform like new.
At least in theory.
In truth, Lina didnât know the full limits of her abilities. Sheâd be lying to herself if she said she didnât have an idea. But in her desperation, it seemed she either went too fast experimenting with her hypothesis or overstepped personal limitations. She didnât know which. The only thing she knew for certain was her time limit had long passed and her body was frozen like this, between three different animal forms.
With a guttural protest, Lina slid into a fetal position as waves of pain wracked her body. Moans of anguish would fade into desperate cries until her breath ran out, and with a jagged breath would repeat again.
âCome on, Lina⌠Youâve been through this before.â She coaxed herself under her breath. She gently rocked herself back and forth in an effort to comfort herself through the stabbing pains. âYou could get through it as a kid. Itâs nothing you havenât experienced before.â

âSaber-Tooth cars werenât actually cats?â Victor asked curiously. He couldnât help but think to himself that adding the word âcatâ into the name was a little misleading in this and he was very eager to hear more to correct this misconception. But while he was happy to hear more, he wasnât so happy to have Lina pinch his throat. The teenage flinched with a small âsqueakâ and grabbed his neck to prevent further pinching. Victor frowned and continued to nod along, eventually his small smile returning as Lina continued to get excited.
Honestly, it was getting a little difficult to keep up with her enthusiasm and buckets of information but he tried to keep up. Every once in a while, heâd make comments such as, âO-oh yeah, I remember learning about Pangaea in grammar schoolâ and âwait, Mesozoic is when the earliest of dinosaurs are fromâŚright?â
When Lachian made his comment, Victor chuckled a little sheepishly, âItâs okay. Itâs a little hard to keep up but I think Iâm getting most of thisâŚâ
âNo, theyâre not. But theyâre also not not-cats, either.â Lina said, shaking her head. âThereâs a bit too much of a difference, especially with how their middle ear bones are structured to differentiate them from true cats. So itâs more like... a horse and buggy canât be considered a vehicle. But itâs still a mode of transportation as opposed to being a banana.â
Lachlan snorted. Lina was trying to calm down from her explosive nerdery and go back to explain things a bit better, or answer Victorâs questions.
âThe Mesozoic Era is the stretch of time that encompasses all the periods the dinosaurs lived in. So if you combine the Triassic, the Jurassic and the Cretaceous, you get the Mesozoic. So when the dinosaurs ended, so too did the Mesozoic Era. The Triassic Period on the other hand is when dinosaurs first started appearing. It was the period that directly followed the Permian era, which itself was the end of the Paleozoic Era. But itâs not the end of the Phanerozoic which -- you know, nevermind. That gets confusing. Even I mess up.â
âWeâre here anyway.â Lachlan said, turning into a dirt path and following the road for seven minutes along the grassy fields until the came to a barn. There were benches set up just outside a large horse training ring, which also seemed to be set up for something.
Lina undid her seatbelt and leaned over Lachlanâs seat. âOh my god is that Victoria?â
âMight be. I didnât think sheâd be here. Maybe she came overseas for a movie or something.â
Lina fell back into her seat, grinning at Victor. âToday is Lachlanâs day. So weâre going to watch him participate in his hobby.â
âMaybe after the main event Iâll let you have a go, Victor.â Lachlan said, jumping out of his car. He gave a wicked grin at the younger boy. âIf youâre brave enough.â Lina smacked his arm. âAhahâow! Stop doing that!â
âCome on, Iâll introduce you to the rest of the group.â Lina hopped out of the car.

Ok, Iâve seen this blog going around⌠and I figure it might be a fun thing to turn into a sort of meme that you tag other people in. So basically just answer the questions, and then tag however many people you wanna do. Iâd suggest 10, but itâs up to you whether you tag more, less, or none at all. Iâm gonna break my rules and tag people to see if I can get this off the ground. Also, as is usual with this, repost, donât reblog.
How they would react upon accidentally walking into a glass door
Sheâd probably yell out âOw!â and if sheâs with a friend or someone start laughing really hard at the ridiculousness of what just happened and lean heavily on the door because of her fit of giggles. Then make jokes about how sheâs a bird.
Their reaction to having their name spelt wrong on a Starbucks drink
'How did they spell my name wrong? Itâs literally four letters!â
What kind of vines they would make
Probably things about what happens in her group. Or science jokes.
Their reaction to your favourite character
"Heâs cute. I see why you like him.â And will proceed to tease them.
How they would play The Sims
She would play for a little while and then quickly become bored because thereâs a lot of more interesting games out there.
What their finishing move would be
A fucking bear.

âItâs okay, Lachian,â Victor commented as he sat down and belted up, âI donât mind listening.â And true to his word, he listened as Lina started to describe some of her hobby. He started to smile a little as his interest grew. In truth, he didnât know much about mapping evolutionary structures but his own âhobbyâ of supernatural hunting did mix well with prehistory.
âIs itâŚis it okay for me to ask how long youâve been interested in mapping out the, um, the phy-phyogenentic structure?â
âOh, Iâve been interested in actually mapping it out for at least three years now. But Iâve always been interested in animals that are long gone. I started out with the common things that most lay people know about. Yâknow, dinosaurs, woolly mammoths, sabre-tooth cats - they arenât actually cats, you know. Theyâre part of the subfamily machairodontinae, which has been completely eradicated from the Earth along with itâs sister group, Proailurinae. Those are more basal cats like a proto-cat.â
Lina shifted in her seat to fully face Victor. Her face was bright and alive as she rambled on about extinct felines, practically bouncing and wiggling in her seat as she spoke. âSmilodon had those big teeth, but they werenât really for shearing meat. They would mainly be used to cut through the jugular in a single ambush.â Lina closed her fingers and lightly pinched Victorâs throat for emphasis. âBut their teeth and jaws were actually pretty brittle, and their teeth actually made it hard for them to get at a lot of meat.
âAnyway, I expanded to different eras in history after I learned there was such a thing as before the dinosaurs. Which when you think about it is a silly thing to discover, but when I was little that kind of blew my mind because no one ever talked about before the dinosaurs, yâknow?â
âSheâs so obsessed she named one of her cats after one of them.â
âOh shush, you. Iâm sure if he was sentient enough to comprehend, Permian would be proud to be named after one of the coolest eras in Earthâs history.â  Lina waved Lachlan off and turned back to Victor. âThe Permian era is when all of the Earthâs continents were together in a supercontinent called Pangaea in the late Paleozoic era - thatâs before the Mesozoic, where the dinosaurs are from. It was when our ancestors ruled the Earth. Mammalian reptiles, the therapsids. They were --â
âCalm, girl. Youâre going to fry his brain.â Lachlan laughed.
She opened the back door to the truck and stepped aside for Victor to enter. âLachlanâs thing is sports. Mostly ancient or really dangerous sports. His main thing is jousting. What is your name, by the way?â
Victor followed in suit and was frankly growing a little embarrassed. If he had known he was supposed to pick an unusual hobbyâŚwell, he probably wonât be able to anyways. âIâŚguess it isnât too usualâŚI mean, the closest thing I have to an usual hobby is going hunting for supernatural things with my siblingsâŚI donât really think that counts though.â He nodded along as Lina briefly explained and added, âWow, you guys have a lot of cool hobbies. CanâŚis it okay for me to ask about your hobby?â
The teenager walked over to the truck with a small nervous smile but quickly looked over at Lina with a small frown. âMy nameâs notâŚâ Victor sighed and decided to ignore that little nickname for now and focus on this new person.
In truth, Victor was a little intimidated by Lachian. It didnât help that Victor was a little on the delicate side so when they shook hands, he had to hide the fact that Lachian was actually hurting him. He smiled off the pain. âJousting? That sounds really cool! Um, Lachian, right? Iâm Victor, by the way.â
âOh, yeah sure.â Lina said, beaming a large smile at Victor.
âCareful, Victor. She can talk your ear off about that, she can.â Lachlan gave a hearty laugh. Lina reached through his open window and punched Lachlan on the arm. Though her hand slipped and she caught her knuckles wrong on his muscles. Lina retreated her hand, shaking it.
âOw! Hey, donât hit the driver.â
âYouâre not even driving yet!â
âPoint.â
When Lina fastened herself in beside Victor Lachlan pulled out of the parking lot. Lina turned to Victor. âMy main interest is mapping the phylogenetic structure through living and extinct creatures, or just anything to do with phylogeny and evolution. I love prehistory.â
Shadow smiled softly. âThanks for not being noisy, I guess.â
Shadow shrugged. âJust because itâs inconvenient in some ways doesnât mean itâs not useful in other ways. I imagine there are lots of ways he can help people, even if he canât be a chef anymore. And I imagine he keeps himself as clean as he can, I wouldnât mind eating a meal cooked by him if he simply follows the same hygiene rules that a human would.â He tilted his head a little before adding. âAnd didnât most of the kitchen staff leave when they found out that most of the meals were basically cooked by a rat? I think the main message of that movie was that talent can come from unexpected places and people you would normally consider beneath you, rather than that people would want to eat meals prepared by rats.â
"Eh, not that I remember that movie. Tyler is unemployed. He has no job. People like us aren't readily accepted into society. But at least people here and our government are doing a better job than down in Champion. I'm pretty sure fear of becoming a second Champion is stronger than any kind of prejudice anyone up here has. Doesn't mean outed mutants aren't mistreated or looked upon warily.
"Not that I blame them. Thugs from Champion have been known to come up here from time to time and start trouble. Not to mention we have our own morons. The main point is he's still in a really bad position."
Lina pulled her hair back into a ponytail and let all of it fall against her back again. "Tyler's a pretty decent cook, still... for a guy that thinks curdled milk tastes as good as pudding, anyway."
Lina tucked her phone in her pocket without replying to him. He was impatient it wasnât like she was dicking around for the fun of it. She rolled her eyes at it. âThe ride clearly has ants in his panties so Iâm kinda in a hurry. You wanna come or what? Itâs just a hobby gathering.â
Victorâs nervousness and embarrassment only seemed to grow as Lina circled around him. He felt awkward and confused but he tried to keep his smile on as Lina explained why he had been mistaken for her friend. The teen nodded and mumbled a small, âyeah, thatâs probably it.â
Wait, was she still talking to him? Normally after these mistakes, the other person would leave quickly. It was a nice surprise to have someone to talk to though he wasnât too sure about this âFluffyâ nickname. âIâm not really doing anything after school. I kinda have a lot of hobbies. I like to knit.â
He perked up a little at the sound of an invitation. âIâd like to come. What kind of hobby gathering is this?â
Lina scrunched her nose as she began to walk toward the school parking lot. "Well, knitting isn't really a rare or unusual hobby now is it? What else do you do? My group is called The Unpopulars; jokingly named because we're a rare hobby group. Each of us has a hobby, and we get together and participate in each other's interests. We have a LARPer, Drainer and competitive dog groomer in our group."
Lina led Victor over to Lachlan's silver four-door Nissan pick-up truck. Lachlan was drumming his fingers on his steering wheel, and raised an eyebrow at Lina when she brought Victor over. Lachlan himself was rather tall, though it was only his height coupled with his built physique that intimidated most people.
"I thought you were bringing the stick in the mud. Who's this guy?"
Lina shrugged. "I dunno. I kinda picked him up and adopted him. Sunshine's not coming, so Fluffy here's his replacement."
Lachlan gave Victor a smirk, holding out a hand through the window. He'd squeeze Victor's hand rather hard if he took up the offer. "You'll get used to Lina's nicknames, Fluffy. She'll start calling you by your real name when she likes you enough."
She opened the back door to the truck and stepped aside for Victor to enter. "Lachlan's thing is sports. Mostly ancient or really dangerous sports. His main thing is jousting. What is your name, by the way?"
"Yep, Iâve always been told that Iâm a super special little snowflake~" He said in a childish voice, leaning his elbows on the wall and sticking his tongue out at her playfully.
"Nah, Iâm not a shifter at all. Itâs⌠well, honestly, itâs not that long of a story, but itâs not something I like telling people about. Letâs just say that I was given these ears and my tail and didnât have a choice in the matter." He left it at that.
"Huh. Well I imagine it can come in useful. A big carapace would be a good defense, and if he can use the wings to fly, thatâd be good for mobility⌠and pincers would be pretty good for offence." He hummed softly, thinking to himself. "Sounds like he lucked out on practical things. Probably not so much on the appearance side, though." He decided not to try imagining what Nathaniel looked like.
She shrugged. "Whatever. Ain't none of my business." Lina wasn't particularly curious when it came to other people. At least not unless they did something of interest.
Lina raised an eyebrow at him. "Not really... I mean Tyler can't even go outside anymore without wearing some kind of trench coat. And his job as a chef? Ruined. No one wants meals cooked by a cockroach as much as Ratatouille would like us to think people would be okay if it were a rat. At least Nat and I are shapeshifters. We can change our appearances."

Perhaps Victor allowed himself to be too absentminded. This tended to happen on the rare days that Tori was too sick to come to school. It was like a void existed at his side with her gone. But really, he should have been focusing more on his surroundings. Maybe that way, he wouldnât have been surprised when a girl tackled him.
The teen was down right awful at these sorts of situations, not that they happened to him often anyway. It always felt like things happened too fast for him to properly react. All he knew was that a girl heâs never seen before was hugging him rather closely. If maybe his brain was functioning a little more, he would have thought to politely tell her that she has the wrong person.
Luck for him, she seemed to realize her mistake rather quickly anyways. He smiled and tried to wave it off as well but the whole situation had leave him rather nervous and slightly embarrassed. âD-donât worry about it. IâmâŚIâm sure this happens a lot. I remind a lot of people of other people.â
Lina put her hand to her chin, examining him closely. She circled him once, dropping her hand to fold over her chest. "That's it! You dress preppy like he does. That's why I mistook you for him." With an annoyed sigh she looked back at the school, their peers now only trickling out. It didn't seem like he'd be coming out any time soon.
"If he doesn't get his ass out here he won't be able to come. I guess he's in a meeting or something. Figures." She turned to Victor. "So, Fluffy, are you doing anything after school? I feel kind of bad for probably giving you a heart attack like that. I have this thing I'm going to soon. What kind of hobbies do you have?"
In the back of her mind there was a quick mental note that she likely sounded just slightly crazy. But it wasn't like she was asking for no reason. Her phone buzzed, and she glanced down at it. It was from Lachlan Wier. Lachlan was a major sports enthusiast in their school, trying out for as many of the sports as he was allowed to sign up for. He was mostly popular for his aggressive role as quarterback in football and also did wrestling. A jock, essentially.
Lina tucked her phone in her pocket without replying to him. He was impatient it wasn't like she was dicking around for the fun of it. She rolled her eyes at it. "The ride clearly has ants in his panties so I'm kinda in a hurry. You wanna come or what? It's just a hobby gathering."
"Such a cruel, cruel woman~!" Shadow raised a hand dramatically to his forehead, the palm facing outward and his wrist brushing against his forehead, as if he was about to dramatically faint.
"Actually, I did lean to ride a bike without falling off. I nearly did, but I didnât." He shrugged. "It wasnât that hard to find my balance. âŚI guess I have fallen off it a couple of times since, though, so I suppose I see your point." He sighed.
He heaved another sigh as he listened. âIf only mine was reversible. Would make things a helluva lot easier for me, I can tell you that muchâŚâ He trailed off, imagining it. Yes, the lack of ears would be a problem, but he could probably learn sign language or something fairly easily. Or maybe he would still be able to hear even without ears, who knows? He shook himself out of it. âWell, science is always a good reason, I guess.â
"Well, aren't we special." Lina rolled her eyes at Shadow's need to tell her about his perfect balance on a bike.
She raised an eyebrow at him. "So, you're a shifter, but it's just a one-time thing? Maybe it only feels irreversible because you've never done anything to try and test it. At least that's what I've gathered from this conversation."
She sat up and turned to face Shadow. The ears didn't bother her, but between herself and Nathaniel, it almost seemed normal. "I can say you have an easier time than one of my friends. He turned into a cockroach. Well, not like a cockroach cockroach. He's still human...ish. But his skin isn't skin anymore and he has a big carapace and wings and these huge pincers." She gestured with her fingers against her chin.
