And then Bilbo sees how Frodo acts at the meeting in Rivendelle, putting this great task on his shoulders while knowing the corrupting risk it carried, and how Sam is of course determined to follow and help him, despite knowing he wasn’t forced to do that. And Bilbo just has this realization that though he and Frodo are similar, in terms of Frodo and Sam, Frodo is more of the Thorin to Sam’s Bilbo. And so after Sauron is defeated, while Bilbo is already incredibly old, he waits before encouraging Frodo to come with him to the undying lands so Sam can spend some peaceful time with Frodo in the shire, something Bilbo never got with Thorin.
