he’s babbling. something about crunch time — does he means exams ? — until he stumbles, ‘m not like, in school anymore, and mary jane couldn’t stop the chuckle from bubbling out from her throat. he’s cute, she decides, and she tells him that. ❝ you’re cute. ❞ which is - totally normal. mary jane knows she’s flirtatious, sue her, but it really doesn’t have to mean anything beyond just telling this perfectly honestly cute regular that he is, indeed, cute.
but geez, if nabila had overheard that, she would’ve teased mary jane till whoever knows when. i told you he’s like, that nerdy kid hot. totally would’ve asked him out if i’m not already with drew. nabila had thrown herself over the counter weeks ago, sighing over the lack of potential. mary jane had remembered looking over, peering over the diner’s retro-style booths and noticing the regular for the first time. dark hair, perpetually-solemn eyes. very ala edward cullen, if edward cullen’s taller and, she supposes, brown-haired. was edward cullen brown haired or was robert pattinson blonde then ?
mary jane wasn’t sure. she hadn’t thought much of it then, just threw the rag she’d been using to wipe the counter back at nabila’s face, smiling, and told her to get to work.
the thank to stella catches her off guard, though; brings her back to the conversation. mary jane shakes her head, still smiling: ❝ oh geez, no. stella’s much grumpier. blonde, loves chewing gum. ❞ stella also looks like she’d rather be anywhere else than at work when she does clock in, but mary jane decides not to indulge the regular that. ❝ my apron, uh — coffee was spilled today. a lot. i swear i’m a decent waitress though —— it’s mary jane. my name ? ❞
embarrassment burns hot in his veins, coloring his cheeks and neck more than a little red as his brain catches up with —— well, everything. the days have always blended together to some degree, but this is ( thankfully ) the first time he’s ever gotten this turned around in his own head. graduated, parker. you graduated already … . barely! no one ever told him just how difficult to work - life - hero balance would be, and god, if it doesn’t leave him running on fumes more often than not. crossing universes was, honestly, the closest thing he’s had to a vacation, ever. part of him kind of misses it, but the other part is happy to be home, even if it means being back to making a fool of himself on a regular basis. in front of someone who just looks exceptionally kind ( and objectively pretty, just to rub salt in the wound ). just the typical parker luck, it seems.
he’s able to talk at least, even if he’s a little bewildered on why she isn’t looking at him like he’s lost all of his nuts and bolts; wide eyes blinking, a little less confused and letting himself smile, even if it’s sheepish. it was one of those times where he wishes the ground would open and swallow him whole, so he could continue being unseen. it’s too late now, and frankly, as embarrassed as he is, his feet and legs don’t seem to be working, ignoring his silent pleas to move, make up some half-hearted excuse and leave.
“ oh! uhm, that’s okay. i mean, it happens, right? i don’t think that makes you a bad waitress, and that’s why there are aprons —— ”
his brain screeches to a halt, catching up with the words tumbling out of his mouth on instinct; an he’s left staring at her for a moment, before snapping his mouth shut. it’s not that peter thinks no one else is allowed to have that name. while maybe not particularly common, it’s far from rare. but, he’s a man of science; which means statistics, and probability. the likelihood of someone in his world having that name? pretty likely, definitely. having someone, with that name, be at his favorite late-night spot, though? a coincidence, maybe. but the universe is rarely so lazy.
“ mary jane. that’s a … . really pretty name! it suits you way more than stella, ha. ‘m just peter. and i come here way too much, which you already knew. wow, am i still talking? must be the coffee, yeah. ”
which he hasn't even touched yet.
