Simply reading the changes made to the end of live-action Lilo & Stitch made me refuse to go watch it. I don't know Hawaiian culture and their view of adoption, but I'll relate it to Saami culture (indigenous to Scandinavia). Norway stated a couple years ago they do not register the ethnicity of the children in their child service system, thus making it impossible to track how many Saami children is currently being raised without access to their language and culture despite them having that right by law. Ofc that has immense consequences for children from other cultures as well.
*spoilers*
Luckily Lilo's new guardian is their native elder neighbour, yet there is no reason for Nani to leave Hawaii straight away to study - guess what - marine biology! Later on for a master/PhD, yes maybe? But the changes makes no sense when in the original Nani gains a support system on the island and thus can continue to both care for her sister and live her life.
I grew up watching Lilo and Stitch, dubbed to norwegian. I was young enough to think Cobra Bubbles was still a CIA agent, as I did not know what CPS was. I knew Lilo was indigenous before I knew my family was. Despite being a Disney series, original Lilo & Stitch managed have anti-colonialist elements, even for an audience who had yet to learn that big of a word. I see no other conclusion than Disney of today actively making changes to avoid that for a new generation?
