Nosferatu (1922)
All I could think of when I got a look at the place from the outside was what fun it would be to stand out there and watch it burn down.

I haven’t had enough sleep for years,
Franz Kafka, from a letter to Felice Bauer written c. March 1913

Sociologically, the ideas and institutions of law vary greatly from one culture to another. Negatively, this means that law is not necessarily what some lawmakers or zealots claim that it is. Law is not an earthly expression of the will of God. It may not represent the interests of “the people.” It has no necessary connection with justice. Law is above all else, a social phenomenon created by members of society under specific historical conditions. Law has not always existed in the past; it might not exist in the future.
Beirne & Messerschmidt (2000)
The absence of love is the most abject pain.

NEW: A gif map of how many executions have occurred in each state in a given year or overall since 1977, the year after the Supreme Court reaffirmed its approval of the death penalty.
For more, see our new report which finds that a shrinking majority of Americans (55%) support the death penalty for persons convicted of murder. Â

I wish you’d find the exit out of my head.
Virginia Woolf, “Letter to Vita Sackville-West,” November 22, 1933
Regrets are the instruments by which we learn. We tend not to repeat the mistakes we truly regret. They may cause us pain, but regrets push us to better our lives. We regret how we treat our first love, but it teaches us to be a better partner. We regret being lazy in school, but it reminds us to apply ourselves in the workplace later. We may be troubled by our regrets, but we don't carry them with us for the rest of our lives. Instead, they become milestones; honor badges that remind us how we've grown. Remorse, however, is a much deeper feeling. What wouldn't we do to take back the circumstances that birthed those scars?
