âIâm the one, you donât have to look any further. Iâm the one. Iâm here, right here for you,â oozes jazz, rock, and electronic music pioneer Annette Peacock on the leadoff title track of her solo debut LP. The albumâs wide range of vocal emotions and diverse sonic palette (featuring Robert Moogâs early modular synthesizers, which the singer actually transmitted her voice through to wild effect) places it firmly at the forefront of the pop avant-garde. Originally released by RCA Victor in 1972 to widespread critical acclaim, Iâm The One found itself amongst good company. Both Lou Reed and David Bowie had recently signed to the labelâBowie in particular was enamored with Annetteâand artists ranging from ex-husband and jazz great Paul Bley, along with notable Brazilian percussionists Airto Moreira and Dom Um Romao, guested on the album itself. Writing and arranging Iâm The Oneâs nine passionate tracksâbar a unique cover of Elvis Presleyâs âLove Me Tenderââ the disc grooves easily from free jazz freak-outs and rough and rugged blues-funk to gently pulsing synthesized bliss. The second release on our Future Days Recordings imprint, Iâm The One is returning to better record shops on CD and LP formats, re-mastered from the original tapes with an insert containing beautiful unseen photos from the vaults of Sony Music and extensive liner notes from NYC-based writer and musician, Mikey âIQâ Jones. An extension of Annetteâs late 1960s work with her Bley-Peacock Synthesizer Show combo, Iâm The One is filled with strength and power, as well as a tender, sensual, and seductive side, born of a life surrounded with music and culture. Composing by age four, Peacockâs mother was a professional violinist. By the early 1960s, Annette had also collaborated with first husband, jazz bassist Gary Peacock and toured with legendary saxophone player Albert Ayler. Studying under Zen macrobiotics educator Michio Kushi and a confidant to Timothy Leary at the Millbrook psychedelic center, Peacock later worked, post-Iâm The One, with rock stalwarts like guitarists Mick Ronson and Chris Spedding, Yes/King Crimson drummer Bill Bruford, as well as surrealist artist Salvador Dali. Light years ahead of her early 1970s contemporaries in terms of individuality and uncompromising vision, the album makes todayâs major label computer generated fabrications an embarrassment to listeners worldwide. Still to this day, Annette remains a passionate advocate, an enigma caught between the peace and love vibrations of a hippy counterculture and the more worldly intelligence of the modern age. Her records continue to influence and inspire, and with Iâm The One finally back on the shelves, countless new jacks on the scene can scope its liner notes and bear witness to its brilliance.
The self-proclaimed founder of the private press scene, Benny Soebardja is one of the most important figures from the Indonesian music industry. Having been a member of bands such as âThe Peelsâ, âShark Moveâ and the infamous âGiant Stepâ, Benny left his mark across many memorable albums throughout the years, including his contributions to the recent âThose Shocking, Shaking Daysâ compilation on Now Again. During the mid 70âs, Benny also recorded solo efforts, which many regard as some of the best music to ever surface from the region. With the help of British poet Bob Dook, Benny recorded numerous English based songs filled with incredible musicianship and melodies that have an underlying progressive nature. Backed by the almost unknown âLizardâ (which contained members of both âGiant Stepâ and Harry Roesliâs âPhilosophy Gangâ), his solo efforts are in line with the sound of his other bands, yet stand on their own as a unique progressive offering. Having almost been signed to Virgin Records UK in the 70â²s as a part of Giant Step, his talents were apparent and would be world renown by this time if not for his music being lost within Indonesia all these years. Here, for the first time we present to you his first three private press solo efforts, âLizardâ, âGut Rockâ and âNight Trainâ.Unlike many bands within the Indonesian scene, Benny had no label influence while recording these offerings, making them true private press recordings without any filler. All three albums are included as a 2 x CD set with a 36 page booklet full of concert photoâs, album covers and information about Bennyâs musical history.
Peter Thomas Sound Orchester
The Big Boss (aka The Fists of Fury) was the film which started Bruce Leeâs international career. Director Lo Weiâs movie premiered in Hong Kong in 1971, but its international success didnât begin until 1973.The German distributor Cinerama tried to subtly adapt the film to western visual habits. This was done mainly through an altered soundtrack. It was supposed that the original score of Chinese composer Wang Fu-Ling would sound far too oriental for Europeans. That was the moment when Peter Thomas came into play. He had been commissioned to conceive the new soundtrack. As a result, his music can be heard in the film worldwide with the exception of China. So Thomasâ soundtrack virtually became the original score of The Big Boss.Previously the only available soundtrack for this movie since itâs original cinematic release has only been Wang Fu-Lingâs. Now, 37 years later, the Peter Thomas score is released on LP for the very first time!

The Monks were five beat playing American GIs stationed in Germany who, after their discharge, decided to stay and continue their musical mission. Meeting up with a team of local managers, they transformed themselves and their sound into a holy racket like the world had never known. This five-person order literally birthed the above genres through a fuzz-drenched evolution of sound, bursting with social commentary and future primitive rhythms.Light In The Attic is ecstatic to present the Monks recorded legacy through two lavishly packaged and lovingly researched reissues (available on CD, LP, and digital download): The Early Years 1964-1965 as well as their landmark studio album Black Monk Time. Numerous period photographs (many unseen) and an extensive two-part essay by Canadian music journalist Kevin Howes (Jamaica-Toronto series) accompany both releases and tell the Monks story like it has never been told. Bonus material dating back to pre-Monks Torquays and up to post Black Monk Time 45s are also included.
Recorded in 1977, âGut Rockâ is Benny Soebardjaâs second solo effort, an album that was released through the independent studio SM Recordings. Having been allowed unlimited studio time and creative freedom, Benny took 30 days to record Gut Rock, backed by both Giant Step & Lizard. With English lyrics penned with the help of Bob Dook, this is an incredible piece of music and a staple within Indonesian collectors circles. With multiple 7 minute songs, âGut Rockâ not only contains beautiful song writing and harmonies, but also complex arrangements that will appeal to progressive collectors. An essential Indonesian rock album.
Having released albums with The Peels, Giant Step and Shark Move, Benny Soebardja recorded âLizardâ in 1975. After the success of the Shark Move LP, bootleg copies of the album started to appear on cassette in local markets, prompting Benny to produce an official version that would be released on Stones Fashions, a local clothing shop. Since Shark Move was recorded for the purpose of a vinyl release, he needed a B-Side for the cassette, which is what collectors refer to as Lizard. Having worked with British poet Bob Dook, Benny was able to craft songs using English lyrics, allowing him to speak on topics frowned upon by Indonesian officials. A true private press, he had no influence from labels, allowing him complete creative freedom. With the help of the band Lizard, and with the backing vocals of members of Harry Roesliâs âPhilosophy Gangâ, this is one of the most notorious independent releases within Indonesian collectors circles. A personal favorite, we are proud to present this album for the first time on vinyl, in a limited edition format with previously banned artwork.
Recorded in 1978, âNight Trainâ would be the last solo project Benny recorded with SM Recordings, and is potentially the rarest Benny Soebardja offering with cassette versions selling in the three figure range within the Indonesian market. Created around the same period Virgin Records UK showed interest in Bennyâs group Giant Step, âNight Trainâ would be the last appearance of Lizard in recorded format, and some even refer to the second side of the cassette as the second Lizard album. Unlike his other solo albums, âNight Trainâ had a small run promotional LP for radio, however it only contained half of the songs from the cassette, and has become one of the most sought after Indonesian artifacts along with Shark Move and Ariesta Birawa. Here, for the first time ever we present all 11 songs on LP in a beautiful gatefold sleeve. Once again itâs full of wonderful harmonies & song writing, English vocals, and the progressive sound Benny made famous throughout his career. Another essential Indonesian rock collectable.Limited to 500 copiesHoused in old-school âTip-onâ jacket
Taschen is this art vampire. He's going to bite me on the neck and my art is going to have immortality.âChas Ray Krider (from an interview with Eric Kroll)"A number of years ago I began to see distinctive layouts in Hustler's Leg World that got me nervous. The photographs were that good. Whoever it was had style and made the women his women. Krider women. Women I began to desire on a monthly basis. In the world of professional golf there is an expression 'the world's greatest golfer not to win a major tournament.' Chas Ray Krider was the world's greatest erotic photographer not to have a book. Thanks to TASCHEN we now have over 160 Krider images to pore over. To salivate over. Like a good film noir, he takes us to lustful places. Is it a crime scene or a sea of lust? These beautiful, languid women wait for whom? For me. For you. They play the 'waiting game' beautifully. An ass in the air, a pair of crossed legs in nylons, all bathed in warm tones. A still life unstuck in time. So this is what goes on behind closed doors?Oh, I almost forgot. Alongside these many Midwest femme fatales is Dita, raven-haired icon. Not since Betty Page has a woman fleshed out so correctly a vintage girdle and bra ensemble.Enjoy. He takes you places where you only vaguely think you have been."

Tom of Finland Volume II - Bikers (25)
In 1953 The Wild One, starring Marlon Brando as Johnny, leader of the Black Rebels Motorcycle Club, was released worldwide. In 1954 Tom of Finland, previously known for his military and blue-collar subjects, drew his first civilian motorcyclist dressed in black leather. Coincidence? Hardly. The Wild One, originally marketed to a female audience with a poster featuring a close-up of Brando's face sans leather cap, hair tousled, cheeks and pout tinted pink with the tagline âThat 'Streetcar' Man has a new Desire!â, resonated far more with gay audiences, who took Brando's character as a template for the first leatherman. After seeing The Wild One Tom never drew men in brown leather again; black leather now dominated his fantasies, and his art.Tom adopted Brando's leather Perfecto jacket, white t-shirt, Levi's, and high boots as his signature look. It was this same look that Tom selected for Kake, his confident, ever-horny hero of 26 panel stories. Kake became Tom's fearless, outgoing alter ego, and bikers supplanted military men as his favorite subject. In Tom of Finland Volume II--Bikers we explore Tom's fascination with bikers through a mixture of multi-panel comics and single panel drawings and paintings, starting in the 1940s, before The Wild One fixed his taste on black leather, through the '50s, '60s, '70s and '80s. Historic film stills and posters, personal photos of Tom, sketches, and Tom's own reference photos make this far more than another Tom's Comics retread.

Abandoned Fragments: The Unedited Works of Franz Kafka 1897-1917
This volume collects all the texts from Franz Kafka's literary remains that originated in the period up until Autumn 1917, with the exception of the two novels The Man Who Disappeared (Kafka's original title for Amerika) and The Trial, plus the material that passed into the published Diaries. These texts - short story drafts, aphorisms, dreams, dialogues, and other shards of recorded imagination - are presented here in strict adherence to Kafka's handwritten drafts - not only in the original form of the text, but also in their raw, handwritten arrangements. Each piece is preserved in its original context, including the various different first attempts that indicate the way towards a work in progress. Whatever stands together in Kafka's handwritten drafts, remains together in this edition. These ABANDONED FRAGMENTS are presented together in English for the very first time, providing a unique resource which will prove indispensable to Kafka scholars, and essential for the general reader of classic literature.
The Weiser Field Guide to Cryptozoology: Werewolves, Dragons, Skyfish, Lizard Men, and Other Fascinating Creatures Real and Mysterious
The Weiser Field Guide to Cryptozoology includes information, interviews, and stories about forty different cryptids seen in various places all over the world by credible eyewitnesses like policemen, rangers, and doctors. Readers will learn where and how to find flying humanoids, hairy humanoids, giants of all kinds including rabbits, bats and spiders, goblins, vampires, werewolves, demons, aliens and ghosts. In the third book of our Weiser Field Guides, Bellaonline paranormal editor, Deena West Budd, surveys the still-emerging field of cryptozoology--a term coined in the 1950s by a French zoologist named Bernard Heuvelmans--the study of "hidden" or "unknown" animals not recognized in standard zoology. From traditional cryptids like Big Foot, the Abonimable Snowman and Nessie, to mythical cryptids like unicorns, vampires, dragons, and werewolves, to lesser-known cryptids like bunyips (waterhorses), Encantado (Dolphin Men of Brazil), thunderbirds, mothmen, and chupacabra, these creatures are very much alive, says Budd, if beyond the realm of normal perception. The Weiser Field Guide to Cryptozoology includes a brief history of the field of cryptozoology and surveys all the creatures for which any credible amount of research exists. Budd gives readers tips on how to spot these creatures, as well as cautionary advice on how to interact with them. Two dozen line drawings rendered from eye witness descriptions accompany the text.
Ludwig Wittgenstein; Translator-C. K. Ogden; Introduction-Bertrand Russell
Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus
In this 1921 opus, Wittgenstein defined the object of philosophy as the logical clarification of thoughts and proposed the solution to most philosophic problems by means of a critical method of linguistic analysis. Beginning with the principles of symbolism, the author applies his theories to traditional philosophy, and more. Introduction by Bertrand Russell.
Horrors From Haunted Seas: Weird Oceanic Tales
As well as four classic fantasy novels and a series of "occult detective" stories, William Hope Hodgson (1877-1918) produced a large number of sea-faring tales, many of them steeped in elements of supernatural terror.Hodgson's vividly drawn descriptions of revulsive oceanic entities often pre-echo Lovecraft in their evocation of squamous, deep-six deliria, while the latter also acknowledged Hodgson's masterful evocations of elemental disquiet and disorder.HORRORS FROM HAUNTED SEAS not only collects all of Hodgson's acclaimed "Sargasso Sea" tales - From The Tideless Sea, The Mystery Of The Derelict, The Thing In The Weeds, The Finding Of The Graiken, and The Voice In The Dawn - but also presents a further 15 stories and episodes of nautical mystery and horror, including A Tropical Horror, The Voice In The Night, Out Of The Storm, The Stone Ship, Demons Of The Sea, The Albatross, and numerous others. The stories are reproduced in chronological order according to year of publication, making this perhaps the definitive edition of William Hope Hodgson's weird oceanic tales. The Voice In The Night was famously filmed in 1963 by Japanese director Ishirô Honda, under the title Matango (aka Attack Of The Mushroom People).
Sadomania: Sinema de Sade (CULT MOVIE FILES)
The Marquis de Sade (1740-1804) is perhaps the most extreme example of a writer whose actual life history has been inextricably confused with the events and characters depicted in his fiction, resulting in the popular perception of de Sade as some mythic personnification of sexual depravity, cruelty and evil. SADOMANIA investigates the zone where de Sade's life, literature and legend most closely collide with cinema.Featuring examinations of the films of directors such as Luis BuÅuel, Jesus Franco, Joe D'Amato, and Pier Paolo Pasolini, and covering genres from horror, sexploitation and hardcore porn to arthouse and underground, SADOMANIA details a plethora of films that are partially or entirely based either on the writings and philosophy of de Sade, or on de Sade's life, or on some fictional notion of de Sade or his family.Fully illustrated throughout, including an 8-page colour section, SADOMANIA is an adult, comprehensive document of "Sadean" cinema that will inform and inflame fans of erotic film and literature alike.Films covered in depth include: SALO, L'AGE D'OR, and Franco's JUSTINE. Jack Hunter's comprehensive introduction references a further one hundred Sadean films.
People Who Eat Darkness: The True Story of a Young Woman Who Vanished from the Streets of Tokyo--and the Evil That Swallowed Her Up
A masterpiece of writing this surely is, but it is more than thatit is a committed, compassionate, courageous act of journalism that changes the way we think. Everyone who has ever loved someone and held that life dear should read this stunning book, and shiver. Chris Cleave, author of Little Beeand Incendiary Lucie Blackmana tall, blond, twentyone-year-oldstepped out into the vastness of Tokyo in the summer of 2000 and disappeared. The following winter, her dismembered remains were found buried in a seaside cave. The seven months in between had seen a massive search for the missing girl, involving Japanese policemen, British private detectives, and Lucie's desperate but bitterly divided parents. Had Lucie been abducted by a religious cult or snatched by human traffickers? Who was the mysterious man she had gone to meet? And what did her work as a hostess in the notorious Roppongi district of Tokyo really involve? Richard Lloyd Parry, an award-winning foreign correspondent, had followed the case since Lucie's disappearance. Over the course of a decade, as the rest of the world forgot but the trial dragged on, he traveled to four continents to interview those connected with the story, assiduously followed the court proceedings, and won unique access to the Japanese detectives who investigated the case. Ultimately he earned the respect of the victim's family, and delved deep into the mind and background of the man accused of the crime: Joji Obara, described by the judge as "unprecedented and extremely evil." The result is "a big, ambitious true-crime book in the tradition of Norman Mailer's The Executioner's Songand Truman Capote's In Cold Blood"( Esquire).
An Emergency in Slow Motion: The Inner Life of Diane Arbus
Diane Arbus was one of the most brilliant and revered photographers in the history of American art. Her portraits, in stark black and white, seemed to reveal the psychological truths of their subjects. But after she committed suicide in 1971, at the age of forty-eight, the presumed chaos and darkness of her own inner life became, for many viewers, inextricable from her work.
In the spirit of Janet Malcolm's classic examination of Sylvia Plath, The Silent Woman, William Todd Schultz's An Emergency in Slow Motion reveals the creative and personal struggles of Diane Arbus. Schultz veers from traditional biography to interpret Arbus's life through the prism of four central mysteries: her outcast affinity, her sexuality, the secrets she kept and shared, and her suicide. He seeks not to diagnose Arbus, but to discern some of the private motives behind her public works and acts. In this approach, Schultz not only goes deeper into Arbus's life than any previous writer, but provides a template with which to think about the creative life in general.
Schultz's careful analysis is informed, in part, by the recent release of some of Arbus's writing and work by her estate, as well as by interviews with Arbus's psychotherapist. An Emergency in Slow Motion combines new revelations and breathtaking insights into a must-read psychobiography about a monumental artist-the first new look at Arbus in twenty-five years

Biopunk: DIY Scientists Hack the Software of Life
Bill Gates recently told Wired that if he were a teenager today, he would be hacking biology. "If you want to change the world in some big way," he says, "that's where you should start-biological molecules." The most disruptive force on the planet resides in DNA. Biotech companies and academic researchers are just beginning to unlock the potential of piecing together life from scratch. Champions of synthetic biology believe that turning genetic code into Lego-like blocks to build never-before-seen organisms could solve the thorniest challenges in medicine, energy, and environmental protection. But as the hackers who cracked open the potential of the personal computer and the Internet proved, the most revolutionary discoveries often emerge from out-of-the-way places, forged by brilliant outsiders with few resources besides boundless energy and great ideas. In Biopunk, Marcus Wohlsen chronicles a growing community of DIY scientists working outside the walls of corporations and universities who are committed to democratizing DNA the way the Internet did information. The "biohacking" movement, now in its early, heady days, aims to unleash an outbreak of genetically modified innovation by making the tools and techniques of biotechnology accessible to everyone. Borrowing their idealism from the worlds of open-source software, artisinal food, Internet startups, and the Peace Corps, biopunks are devoted advocates for open-sourcing the basic code of life. They believe in the power of individuals with access to DNA to solve the world's biggest problems. You'll meet a new breed of hackers who aren't afraid to get their hands wet, from entrepreneurs who aim to bring DNA-based medical tools to the poorest of the poor to a curious tinkerer who believes a tub of yogurt and a jellyfish gene could protect the world's food supply. These biohackers include: - A duo who started a cancer drug company in their kitchen - A team who built an open-source DNA copy machine - A woman who developed a genetic test in her apartment for a deadly disease that had stricken her family Along with the potential of citizen science to bring about disruptive change, Wohlsen explores the risks of DIY bioterrorism, the possibility of genetic engineering experiments gone awry, and whether the ability to design life from scratch on a laptop might come sooner than we think.

Bobs World: The Life and Boys of A.M.G.s Bob Mizer
Bob Mizer spent 48 years making photos and films for his Athletic Model Guild, and 41 years publishing Physique Pictorial, America's first, and most explicitly gay physique magazine. His diaries, kept from the age of eight, make it clear that he was openly homosexual from his late teens, but until the age of 42 he lived and worked in his mother's L.A. rooming house, where his strict ethical code prevented him from fully expressing his fantasies. For 24 years he worked in black and white and never showed a completely naked man, but following his mother's death in 1964 Mizer built a kingdom dedicated to the pleasures of male flesh, and photographed fully nude men in explicit poses and psychedelically saturated colors. In the 1970s and '80s Bob Mizer's compound, centered around the old rooming house, became home to dozens of his young models, who lived outdoors on couches and porch gliders among the chickens, geese, goats and monkeys, Roman statuary, cast off Christmas trees and other sundry props that featured in his increasingly quirky films and photography.Sometimes called the Hugh Hefner of gay publishing for his pioneering magazine (republished in entirety by TASCHEN in 1997), Mizer influenced figures in art and society from David Hockneyâwho first came to America partly to meet Bob Mizerâto California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who modeled for Mizer in 1975.Age statement required for purchase.
A motel, a camera and Lucy Fur. Dreamy.-Jimmy McDonough, author of Shakey: Neil Young's Biographyand Big Bosoms and Square Jaws: The Biography of Russ Meyer The young, buxom "Burlesque Queen" of Portland, Oregon, has begun a distinctive photographic career by posing in a vanishing breed of unique motel room environ-ments across the country. Writes Lucy in her introduction, " Room With a Viewis not merely a pin-up book: it is as much about the room as it is about me. I think of myself as a fixture in that room, like a lamp or a chair. The kind of motel rooms that particularly attracted me had wood paneling, forgotten '60s- and '70s-era oil paintings, strange lighting, fantasy themes, tiled bathrooms, wacky wallpaper, and no outside view. All the photo-graphs are in some way a reaction to the established lexicon of 'pin-up sexy.'" Room With a Viewcontains nearly one hundred of Lucy Fur's photographs, bound handsomely with an inlaid photograph surrounded by an elegant embossed cloth binding.

Lost Vanguard: Russian Modernist Architecture 1922-1932
The Lost Vanguard documents the work of modernist architects in the Soviet Union during the years following the 1917 revolution and civil war. In little more than a decade, some of the most radical buildings of the twentieth century were completed by a small group of architects who developed a new architectural language in support of new social goals of communal life. Rarely published and virtually inaccessible until the collapse of the Soviet regime, these important buildings have remained unknown and unappreciated.Richard Pare's photographs reveal the powerful forms of these structures, some still in use but many now abandoned and decayed. Massive industrial complexes like the Dnieper River Dam and MoGES, which supplies electricity to the city of Moscow; vast communal houses for workers, including Ginzburg's Narkomfin; commercial buildings and government offices; and smaller clubs and theaters were all built in this brief period. In an incisive essay, architectural historian Jean-Louis Cohen surveys the history of the period, providing a context for the emergence of this startling new architecture in parallel to contemporary experiments in Europe.
Underground Buildings: More than Meets the Eye
Unusual as they seem, underground buildings are surprisingly common. Every day, millions in North America work, shop, dine, study, and play in the more than three hundred public and commercial structures and five thousand private homes nestled in the earth. Underground buildings are safe, attractive, useful, and comfortable places to frequent and live. Unlike a common misconception, most are dry and warm, and they are often sun-filled. More than one hundred underground buildings are included in this fascinating subterranean tour. These buildings range from the famous to the unnoticed. Some were built for pragmatic reasons, others for aesthetic considerations, still others, for a combination of both. There are impressive success stories and discouraging tales of failure. Some underground buildings are incredibly energy-efficient, for example, while others leaked so badly they were abandoned. A vast spectrum of structures is presented, ranging from stunning examples of hidden opulence to humble subterranean cubbyholes where unassuming people immerse themselves in natureâs simplicity.

Before the Bauhaus: Architecture, Politics, and the German State, 1890-1920 (Modern Architecture and Cultural Identity)
Before the Bauhaus reevaluates the political, architectural, and artistic cultures of pre-World War I Germany. As contradictory and conflict-ridden as the German Second Reich itself, the world of architects, craftsmen and applied-arts "artists" were not immune to the expansionist, imperialist, and capitalist struggles that transformed Germany in the quarter-century leading up to the First World War. In this study, John Maciuika brings together architectural and design history, political history, social and cultural geography. He substantially revises our understanding of the roots of the Bauhaus and, by extension, the historical roots of twentieth-century German architecture and design. His book sheds new light on hotly contested debates pertaining to the history of Germany in the pre-World War I era, notably the issues surrounding "modernity" and "anti-modernity" in Wilhelmine Germany, the character and effectiveness of the government administration, and the role played by the nation's most important architects, members of the rising bourgeois class, in challenging the traditional aristocracy at the top of the new German economic and social order.

Marcel Duchamp: 1887-1968; Art as Anti-Art (Basic Art)
Someone else may have invented the wheel, but Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) invented the ready-made. A bottle dryer may be a bottle dryer, but signed by Duchamp it is also one of the major works of 20th century art.Duchamp has been an enigma to art historians and a great source of inspiration to other artists. This study addresses the myth and reveals the compelling charisma of Marcel Duchamp.
Caspar David Friedrich (Taschen Basic Art)
For someone new to the art of Casper David Friedrich, the first emotional response is that of awe. The color and compositions of Friedrich's work are humbling and humane at the same time. The artistic idealism found in his work is an organic out-growth of Friedrich's Protestant mystical piety at the zenith of German Romantic philosophical fervor.

In Focus: Weegee: Photographs from the J. Paul Getty Museum
New York in the mid-1950s was a time of detectives, G-men, mobsters, and crime photographers. Weegee (American. b. Austria, 1899-1968) fit this last profile perfectly. Speed Graphic camera in hand, he dashed around the city responding to the police radio, recording accidents, arrests, fires, and murders. This volume in the J. Paul Getty Museum's In Focus series examines approximately fifty of the ninty-five Weegee prints in the collection, surveying his photojournalism as well as additional works that picture life in the Bowery, Greenwich Village, and Harlem. Judith Keller, Associate Curator in the Department of Photographs, provides an introduction to Weegee and commentary on the plates. The photographer was the subject of a colloquium at the Getty Museum on August 27, 2004, where the author was joined by David Featherstone, Michael Hargraves, Weston Naef, Miles Orvell, Ira Richer, Colin Westerbeck, and Cynthia Young in discussing his life and work. This conversation, captured here in an edited transcript, traces Weegee's transition from crime photography to social documentarian, with special attention paid to his publications, including Naked City (1945). William McCleery, in the foreword to that book, calls Weegee "an Artist" with "his own conception of what constitutes beauty." With the issuance of this In Focus installment, readers can again share in Weegee's conception.

Things That Go Boom or Fly, Float, and Zoom!: 18 DIY Projects to Make
If you like making things, the 18 machines featured in this book cover a wide range of interests and skill levels, and every one does something when it's completed--whether it's flying, floating, walking, or talking. From a tiny balloon-powered boat that will entrance a toddler to a light-following robot, there's something here to cover every mood and all abilities. There are simple projects that you can make with children, and more complex ones that you can take on yourself; machines that call for team effort and others that are definitely for days when you want to embark on a solitary enterprise. Most have elements that you can show off to an admiring audience when they're completed, like the huge hot-air balloon that you can send floating up into an evening sky, or Stomper, the tiny dancing robot. The detailed step-by-step instructions hold your hand along the way, whether you're sawing wood or putting a circuit board together, ensuring that every project reaches a successful and enjoyable conclusion.
High energy costs have spurred the search for new and better ways to increase energy efficiency in family dwellings throughout America. One exciting solution is to reduce energy needs by building underground. Underground Homes offers the layman a complete and thoughtful approach to planning, building, and inhabiting an earth-sheltered home. Author Louis Wampler takes the reader step-by-step through a potential maze of construction problems. He uses simple language and numerous diagrams and illustrations to answer the questions people ask most often about underground homes. The book offers information and guidance on such key factors as i Planning interior and exterior design i Choosing the proper site i Insulating for maximum energy savings i Waterproofing the structure i Deciding what roof will work best on the home i Selecting appropriate heating and cooling systems Underground Homes also addresses specific problems associated with subterranean homesodetermining the local water table, reinforcing concretewith steel, using skylights and windowsoand discusses the common psychological barriers to living underground, while presenting solutions and insights into all of these problems. Living in a house surrounded by soil, the author contends, achieves two important energy-related objectives: it moderates extreme temperature fluctuations of outside air, and it reduces temperature loss or gain. The higher energy bills rise, the more appealing energy-efficient underground dwellings are sure to become.

Bare-Knuckle Boxers Companion: Learning How to Hit Hard and Train Tough from the Early Boxing Masters
The fighters of the great bare-knuckle boxing era were tough men and skilled combatants. They had to be to endure brutal brawls that could last for hours, testing the skills and guts of both participants. In this fascinating tutorial on this poorly understood combative art, martial artistsDavid LindholmandUlf Karlsson Tadaextract the practical material from historical bare-knuckle boxing and show how it can be applied in modern self-defense. LindholmandTadahave analyzed the surviving texts and illustrations of the masters of bare-knuckle boxing and organized what they've discovered into a complete program for training, conditioning and applying these skills in a real confrontation. In doing so, they show how bare knuckle is an ideal system for real-world self-defense. It contains strikes, throws, parries and a few basic kicks, so it is simple to learn. The techniques are remarkably powerful, which means you get a good payoff for each shot you land. It works regardless of the clothes you wear, the surface you stand on, the space you will fight in or how many attackers you meet. Bare knuckle is also easy to practice alone or with partners, because you need minimal space and equipment to train and enjoy its benefits. The bare-knuckle boxing era ended in the early 20th century, when gloves were introduced, stricter rules implemented and oversight organizations formed. This book is devoted to reviving this practical combative art.
A Hundred Little Hitlers: The Death of a Black Man, the Trial of a White Racist, and the Rise of the Neo-Nazi Movement in America
On November 12, 1988, a group of Portland, Oregon, skinheads known as East Side White Pride encountered three Ethiopians in a street fight, resulting in the brutal death of Mulugeta Seraw. For award-winning journalist Elinor Langer, the Seraw case is the launchpad for a thorough investigation of the Nazi-inspired racist movement in the United States. She vividly reconstructs the world of the skinheads: their origins in the punk scene, their basement shrines to Nazi power, their moments of glory on Oprah and Geraldo. She examines the long-standing radical groups that encouraged the movement, tracking the progress of such powerful figures as White Aryan Resistance leader Tom Metzger through key bastions of the Far Right. In gripping detail, she follows civil-rights lawyer Morris Dees's efforts to prove Metzger responsible for the Portland killing-a sensational campaign to curb the growth of neo-Nazism.Compelling, disturbing, and important, A Hundred Little Hitlers is both an epic account of racism and justice and a close examination of social forces that loom ever more dangerously today.
What is masculinity? Ask ten men and you'll get ten vague, conflicting answers. Unlike any book of its kind, The Way of Men offers a simple, straightforward answer-without getting bogged down in religion, morality, or politics. It's a guide for understanding who men have been and the challenges men face today. The Way of Men captures the silent, stifling rage of men everywhere who find themselves at odds with the over-regulated, over-civilized, politically correct modern world. If you've ever closed your eyes and wished for one day as a lion, this book is for you.

The Birth of Tragedy & The Genealogy of Morals

Human Smoke: The Beginnings of World War II, the End of Civilization
Bestselling author Nicholson Baker, recognized as one of the most dexterous and talented writers in America today, has created a compelling work of nonfiction bound to provoke discussion and controversy -- a wide-ranging, astonishingly fresh perspective on the political and social landscape that gave rise to World War II.Human Smoke delivers a closely textured, deeply moving indictment of the treasured myths that have romanticized much of the 1930s and '40s. Incorporating meticulous research and well-documented sources -- including newspaper and magazine articles, radio speeches, memoirs, and diaries -- the book juxtaposes hundreds of interrelated moments of decision, brutality, suffering, and mercy. Vivid glimpses of political leaders and their dissenters illuminate and examine the gradual, horrifying advance toward overt global war and Holocaust.
Praised by critics and readers alike for his exquisitely observant eye and deft, inimitable prose, Baker has assembled a narrative within Human Smoke that unfolds gracefully, tragically, and persuasively. This is an unforgettable book that makes a profound impact on our perceptions of historical events and mourns the unthinkable loss humanity has borne at its own hand.

A Cool Million and The Dream Life of Balso Snell: Two Novels
Nathanael West was only thirty-seven when he died in 1940, but his depictions of the sometimes comic, sometimes horrifying aspects of the American scene rival those of William Faulkner and Flannery OâConnor. A Cool Million, written in 1934, is a satiric Horatio Alger story set in the midst of the Depression. The Dream Life of Balso Snell (1931) was described by one critic as "a fantasy about some rather scatological adventures of the hero in the innards of the Trojan horse." Nathanael West (1903-1940), né Nathan Weinstein, was born in New York City in 1903 and, after a literary pilgrimage to Paris, worked as a hotel manager, a journalist, and a screenwriter while writing his four novels. He was also the author of Miss Lonelyhearts and The Day of the Locust. Nathanael West was only thirty-seven when he was killed in an automobile accident in 1940. But he achieved his brilliant satiric vision early on, and his descriptions of the "grotesque" aspects of the American scene rival those of Poe, Faulkner, and Flannery OâConnor. A Cool Million, written in 1934 and subtitled "The Dismantling of Lemuel Pitkin," is a satiric Horatio Alger story set in the middle of the Depression and written in a bracing, mock-heroic style. The Dream Life of Balso Snell (1931), West's first work, was described by one critic as "a fantasy about some rather scatological adventures of the hero in the innards of the Trojan horse." "West's devotion to exaggerated normality led him naturally to humor, satire, and the grotesque . . . and though he didn't have much hope that humanity could transcend the bleakness of the world, he sympathized with the longing to do so."âVirginia Heffernan, The Boston Phoenix Literary Supplement "The work of Nathanael West, savagely, comically, tragically original, has come into its own. A new public [has] discovered in the writings of West a brilliant reflection of its own sense of chaos and helplessness in a world running more to madness than to reason."âBudd Schulberg

Heavy Metal Islam: Rock, Resistance, and the Struggle for the Soul of Islam
We play heavy metal because our lives are heavy metal. Reda Zine, one of the founders of the Moroccan heavy-metal scene "Music is the weapon of the future." Fela Kuti An eighteen-year-old Moroccan who loves Black Sabbath. A twenty-two-year-old rapper from the Gaza Strip. A young Lebanese singer who quotes Bob Marley's "Redemption Song." They are as representative of the world of Islam today as the conservatives and extremists we see every night on the news. Heavy metal, punk, hip-hop, and reggae are each the music of protest, and in many cases considered immoral in the Muslim world. This music may also turn out to be the soundtrack of a revolution unfolding across that world. Why, despite governmental attempts to control and censor them, do these musicians and fans keep playing and listening? Partly, of course, for the joy of self-expression, but also because, in this region, everything is political. In Heavy Metal Islam, Mark LeVine explores the influence of Western music on the Middle East through interviews with musicians and fans, introducing us young Muslims struggling to reconcile their religion with a passion for music and a desire for change. The result is a revealing tour of contemporary Islamic culture through the evolving music scene in the Middle East and Northern Africa. Heavy Metal Islamis a surprising, wildly entertaining foray into a historically authoritarian region where music just might be the true democratizing force.

What Art Is: The Esthetic Theory of Ayn Rand
Cultural icon Ayn Rand (1905-1982) was known as much for her philosophy as for her fiction. Her original theory of esthetics, which attacks many "masterpieces" of modernist art, is as combative and controversial as any of her work, but until now has received little serious scrutiny. In What Art Is, the authors demonstrate that Rand's ideas are supported by evidence from other academic fields.

Ed Schraderâs Music Beat
Welcome To The Roman Empire
Ed Schrader has been a creative fixture in Baltimore for several years now. But before his live talk show, the Ed Schrader Show, was first taped in a chilly warehouse, and before he joined forces with bassist Devlin Rice in his unholy duo, Ed Schraderâs Music Beat, he was conducting extensive home taping experiments in various locations in upstate New York. To compile Welcome to the Roman Empire, Fan Death Records has dug through several hours worth of Edâs archives spanning from handheld tape recordings and projects for a broadcasting class at SUNY Brockport dating back to 2003, to rhythmic quasi-industrial tracks that made it to his 2009 vinyl debut The Choir Inside. The tape also includes some spoken interludes of Schraderâs remarkable comedic talent. While his releases as Ed Schraderâs Music Beat show him further refining his skill at âbanging the hell out of a floor tomâ (Baltimore City Paper) into a pop context, this tape is as much Raw Schrader as youâll find anywhere.
Craphound, No. 6: Death, Telephones & Scissors
This is a new, updated edition. The almost-all-visual zine. Each page is filled with high-contrast art, carefully taken from vintage catalogs, advertising, obscure books, and found ephemera. A mixture of social commentary and self-acknowledged over-indulgent graphic design. This issue is bigger than the previous one, with better production values. It focuses largely on scissors, skulls, gravestones, hearses, other funereal graphics, danger warnings, and telephones. Through sheer volume of artfully arranged iconography, it visually explores popular meaning, cultural ideals and historic symbolism of these popular items. Not for sale in the Portland area (that's Portland, Oregon, not Portland, Maine).

Upskirt Voyeur: The Sexy World of Japanese Girls
This item contains adult content. If you are under 18, please leave this page.Voyeurism has been a theme in Japanese literature ever since the first written texts appeared. A visual game of hide and seek known as kaimami ("peering through") was popular in the 9th century, when voyeurs would peep through gaps in fences or blinds, hoping to spy enchanting and possibly nude silhouettes. A similar practice became popular in Japan in the 1980s, when the ultimate bliss was to peek under a skirt and catch a glimpse of white cotton panties momentarily revealed by a fortuitous movement. This is why Ken-ichi Murata's photographs disclose so much about the Japanese psyche: they show the paradox of an unveiled, fully visible and willing body, which nevertheless eludes the eye of its beholder. Gazing into the camera with inscrutable expressions, Ken-ich's princess-like models do not merely expose their lovely vulvas and the petite rosettes of their anuses, but also reveal something incorporeal, nearly incomprehensible and bordering on pure emotion. These gorgeous photos by Ken-ichi Murata, and the unobstructed views they offer under the indiscreetly lifted skirts of his youthful models, are simply delightful! Sometimes we see white or colored panties, other times the girls' nude pubes are in full view. Luscious, artistic visions from the land of cherry blossoms...

And in "Payback's a Bitch," when a husband finds his wife and his best friend ruining the new carpet together, he takes the old dirt road to justice!

Charles Gatewood Photographs: The Body and Beyond
A collection of photographs by Gatewood spanning the career of this very independent photographer who, for the past 20 years, has chronicled the extremes of behavior in various settings from Mardi Gras in New Orleans to New York's Hellfire Club to San Francisco's sexual underground.Age statement required for purchase.
In his photographs, Daikichi Amano (b.1973 in Japan), enfant terrible of Hokusai, does not shun even the most impossible types of embraces. In his monstrous orgies -- elaborate and disturbingly sensual encounters of otherworldly beauty that flirts with the abject -- angel-faced women frolic with snakes and earthworms, elegantly contorted and interlaced eels slipping into every orifice of the human body. Live toads are sucked-on gluttonously, cockroaches, larvae and other invertebrates embrace, interweave, absorb and suck on each other until they lock into a hybrid body moving as one under the waves of a new kind of irresistible sensuality. Each animal possesses its own secret beauty -- Amano has made it his calling to reveal their graces: smooth undulating eels, shiny and transparent octopuses arranged in precious and enthralling compositions. Despite being disturbing to the point of nausea, Daikichi Amano's works are celebrated internationally. He composes new kinds of tableaux with the bodies of actresses, animals and insects, translates his nightmares and visions into frozen images, portraits of an almost surreal beauty. Amano pursues this photographic enquiry into the bizarre realms of erotic imagination with an obsessive and perfectionist eye for detail, inspired by the Dutch still-lives painters as well as Japanese mythology and the great Ukiyo-E woodcut masters of the Edo period and in particular the erotic Shunga prints.Textures, surfaces and bodies weave themselves into abstract compositions in his photographs, with flesh, scales and skin taking on the colours of jewels. The abject becomes sublime. This is Amano's great talent: to reevaluate death not as sterile horror, but as an aesthetic resurrection. He takes up the ancient idea of beauty as ineluctably doomed to wilt, condemned to eventually disappear and thereby aligns himself as an artist in a thousand-year-old poetic tradition that sings of all things fleeting and ephemeral. Not smut, but some nudity and disturbing adult imagery; not for kids.Age statement required for purchase.

Who wants to "Ride With Death"? Full-fledged Hessians to the bitter end, SPEEDWOLF play for keeps, each of the LP's dozen tracks an anthem unto itself - so come on and "Ride With Death"!

Their influences melt together like wax from black candles on an age-old satanic ritual. The production is warm and heavy, yet raw and filthy. All lyrics, art, layout, writing & recording was done by the band themselves, bringing back a punk D.I.Y. attitude the underground is missing nowadays. The Witch is back, and its time to get STONED!Recommended for worshippers of Witchfinder General, Trouble, Deep Purple and Winter.
On "Worthless," Weekend Nachos display some of the most technical, thrashing moments of unadulterated powerviolence, as well as the thickest, most crushing riffs heard from them yet. What makes them even better is the schizophrenic weaving of these two styles that the group so swiftly pulls off. Songs like "Frostbitten" demonstrate this with perfection, transitioning unexpectedly from ominous guitar chugs into a fast array of D-beats and a mix of high-pitched screams and classic Weekend Nachos vocals.
SSD meets Napalm Death. One of the all time's, for sure.

GREEN VINYL."Originally this EP had been planned to see the light of day a lot earlier, but due to several problems (frontman Katon didnât have a band again) it only got released now. Thankfully songwriting king Glen Rogers is back on board. So the five songs seamlessly continue, where the last long player âThe New Age Of Terrorâ had left off. Speed-wise they take one step back, which leads to the material sounding more powerful and brutal. Right off the bat âSummon The Death Dealersâ kicks things off with a huge âSouth Of Heavenâ touch, while the opening riff of âCity Of The Deadâ reminds me a bit of âOpen Casketâ by DEATH and speeds up more and more until it turns into a headbanger inferno. The shredding riffs of âInvasionâ, together with the slower drums warm up the neck muscles, leading into the title track and the cow truly flies, when they add a little melody in best Power Metal style and speed things up a little. But despite the big, but not too polished production the EP cannot quench the hunger of the old school Thrasher. They have to rectify this situation in form of a full album soon. And before I forget, Katon W. De Pena screams rougher, tougher and better than ever. The kings of underground Thrash Metal are back!" - MetalObserver
Second pressing from DEEP SIX RECORDS of EXTORTION's killer second LP 'Sick'! Long out of press, it's great to have this ripper available again. All my copies are on black vinyl. Classic Australian hardcore release and one of the best EXTORTION records in my opinion. ESSENTIAL
Finally, there is something new from Denmarkâs Altar Of Oblivion. After their successful first full length record, they have been busy writing this Salvation EP + another full length album to be released later this year. Salvation picks up right where the debut left off only with a much thicker recording and heavier sound. They re-recorded another song from their demo âThreshold To Oblivion (My Wrecked Mind)â. If you were a fan of the debut, this is an absolute must. âBelievers In The Mistâ is the highlight of this EP with the strongest riffs and most memorable lines on the album.1. The Narrow Gates Of Emptiness2. Believers In The Mist3. Threshold To Oblivion (My Wrecked Mind)4. Salvation5. As We Perish

After a slew of small vinyl, Atlanta's Bukkake Boys finally deliver their debut LP. Over the years since their last EP for Sorry State, Bukkake Boys have expanded to a five-piece and grown increasingly heavy, intense, and pummeling, leaving behind their scraggly, noisy hardcore for a sound that takes the best parts of huge-sounding Japanese HC like Framtid and Kriegshög and combines it with the simplicity and urgency of classic USHC. If you like your hardcore to fit neatly in a subgenre, you might not get it. If you like your hardcore delivered with maximum possible venom and bile, get this immediately. Includes digital download. - Sorry State
Ignivomous was among the first of many recent bands to breathe cold morbid breath into the decrepit form of dark and brooding Death Metal. Reinvigorating the style of metal perfected over a decade earlier by the likes of Incantation and Immolation is a task the band has not taken lightly. Rote mimicry was never the path chosen by Ignivomous on their previous releases and with their second album, âContragenesis,â the band pushes even further and still manages to expand the boundaries of their sound. What separates Ignivomous from their peers is the intuitive nature of the songwriting. As with so many classic albums, intuition is the driving force behind âContragenesis.â The band demonstrates that it can unfold the pieces of each song in such a way that the listener is drawn completely into the work. Every turn and transition is carefully sculpted so that the detail is preserved while still moving the entirety of the composition forward toward its zenith. This attention to detail forces the listener to notice the micro-elements and simultaneously behold the overarching structure. Ignivomous prove that they have mastered the ability of imbuing this highly technical Death Metal with a certain elasticity that renders the songs listenable and engaging. The ferocity of the songs is never degraded and the parts are flexible enough to prevent the sterility that is all too common in technical music. The interplay between the two guitars is largely responsible for this effect as is the organic and unaffected production of the album. Radical tempo shifts and unpredictable melodies also enhance the mystique of Ignivomousâ music. While some bands look to include new instruments or samples or some other novel gimmick to alter their sound, Ignivomous never change the ingredients of their work. Relying upon only the most fundamental and traditional elements of Death Metal, Ignivomous are masters of incorporating subtle, intuitive alterations within the formula that constantly reinvent the work. By the end of âContragenesisâ the image that Ignivomous create is one of pure apocalyptic nihilism. A burned out world consumed by the void of its own collapsed spiritual infrastructure. The closing track in particular, entitled âThe Last Cadence to Bloodshed,â leaves the listener alone and spiritless in an empty world. To augment the expression of desolation within the music, Ignivomous called upon the inimitable TK to conjure similarly abject visual imagery for the album. The combined result is a Death Metal masterpiece, the power of which will be felt for years to come.

Year of no Light & This Quiet Army
Year of no Light & This Quiet Army
After the release of Ausserwelt, awesome record and critically acclaimed second album by YEAR OF NO LIGHT, we started talking last year with our old friends from Bordeaux about releasing something new from them. We talked about several projects of split and collaborations and eventually all agreed on the idea of sharing a new record with THISQUIETARMY from Montreal, Canada. This record pushes the idea of sharing a record to the extreme. Both sides start with a new song from each band, long songs (approx 12 min) which let both bands enough time to developp their own ambience full of intensity and melodic loops. These new songs are followed by collaboratives drones which prove that these two bands were made to work together and share a record. The atmosphere is dark but always full of melodies and progressions. The record deserves several playings for the listener to really hear all nuances and details. THISQUIETARMY will be on tour in europe in april with AUN. YEAR OF NO LIGHT will do a very few live appearances in the coming months since they started working on a new album after their Russian trip. Artwork has been done by the dedicated Destructure team. - Destructure
This new release is a kind of 10 years birthday present for Destructure. Destructure started as a distro at the very end of the 90â²s and our first release was HIPPIES OF TODAY 10â³ which came out in december 2001. Hippies of Today was a grind/punk band from Caen & Le Mans (France) which was very active in the early 2000â²s. They released a « s/t » 10â³ and a split 7â³ with The Index as well as a CD collecting all these songs. They played lots of shows in France, a european tour in 2002 and then disbanded due to lack of time and distance between members. Few months ago, at the end of 2011, HIPPIES OF TODAY members were asked to record a new album for some kind of label 10 years celebrations. After a couple of rehearsal week ends, the trio recorded 10 songs by itself in december 2011. This has been then mixed and mastered by Guillaume Doussaud from SWAN SOUND STUDIO. These new songs are the same kind of music that the band used to do (most of the songs were written years ago but never recorded, the band rearranged them in 2011), itâs a mix of punk, hardcore and grind with melodies and metal hints. The new recording is a bit different, more mature of course but also very raw, dark, raging and angry. The sound, music and lyrics have evolved just like the world around us. For this release we asked our good friend Stephane from AINU Records to collaborate with his label, it was a logical choice since he has made a lot for the band and also for the label during the past 10 years. - Destructure

Boston punk outfit REVILERS have been kicking about on their local scene since 2008, and finally dropped debut album Revilers on Patac Records at the end of March. Containing thirteen no-holds-barred and vitriolic as heck anthems, Revilers builds on the EPâs (Isolation, Stand or Fall - both on Patac) the band have released previously and fully realises their stance on the world and how these individuals see it.Featuring words spat by two vocalists, JH and S (who can also be found wielding a guitar each), REVILERS take a firm approach in their punk rock sensibilities and whilst this is a band with something clear to say, that message is never forced down your throat. A lot of politically charged bands are inclined to do that and itâs refreshing to hear a young band taking their time with their points and letting them seep into your subconscious rather than stomping them all over your face. As such, REVILERS can be enjoyed on two levels â as a fast paced, crazy good fun punk rock record, or as an album with that something extra to say. âNo Bullshit Reactor,â âQuit My Jobâ and âSick Of Being Sick And Tiredâ hiding a deep dislike of âthe manâ behind the always welcome gang vocal chant and the occasional guitar solo â not often heard in this genre. - Patac Records
debut ep from negative standards. downtuned d-beat, noise, samples, and rage.
In your face, straight to the point, political thrash/grind from Baltimore, MD. The music is fast and heavy with two styles of unique vocals that will make your ears melt off. This record is packed with 10 tracks of aggression and raw intensity similar to bands like Magudergrind, 9 Shocks Terror, and Assuck. It also comes with a 3 color, DIY silk screened, tri-fold poster as the insert.

Maurice Vellekoops Pin-ups
Maurice Vellekoop's Pin-Ups is a collection of pictures of sexsational young men of all types and sizes, drawn from the delirious imagination of Maurice Vellekoop. Inspired by the golden age of great girlie artists like Vargas and Gil Elvgren, Vellekoop brings the cheekiness and wit of these masters to the world of gay erotica. Vellekoop's art is also indebted to the great gay illustrators of the past, like George Quaintance, Harry Bush, and of course Tom of Finland, whose sunny, light sense of humor combined with impeccable style and raunchiness determined the language of gay erotica for generations of queer artists. Leonardo Da Vinci's famous "Human Figure in a Circle Illustrating Proportions" gets an obscene Vellekoopian makeover, as do Gainesborough's "Blue Boy" and Michelangelo's "David." A burly blacksmith is inspired by Currier and Ives prints of the 19th century, and the color palette in the picture of an impressively endowed Tarzan looks suspiciously like that of Disney's "Jungle Book." Homage is paid to Italian gladiator movie posters, children's fairy tales, Frank Frazetta- type fantasy art, and Bruce Weber's iconic underwear ads. A delightfully sexy celebration of male beauty, painted in the artist's signature dazzling Technicolor tones. If you love men of all types, from daddies to twinks, you'll find them here in deliciously seductive scenarios. Age statement required for purchase.
Tokyo Girls (German Edition)
In his native Japan, in the trendy metropolis of Tokyo, Yasuji Watanabe ranks among the stars of the younger generation of photographers. Watanabe understands his models intuitively, and the girls in his pictures live out their erotic fantasies and obsessions in front of his camera. He captures the girls as they indulge in the pleasure of playing and in their lust and sexuality, which can express itself as pain, youth, bondage, loneliness, expectation, stimulation, melancholy, and submission. Though his work is in the tradition of master Nobuyoshi Araki, he has evolved his own unique erotic language of images. Hardbound, color. Age statement required for purchase.

Intimate Obsessions (German Edition)
English photographer China Hamilton has earned worldwide fame with his artistically staged pictures. His photos are intimate portraits of women who delight in opening themselves and in surrendering unconditionally to the obsessions of this master photographer. This collaboration results in images that are mercilessly honest and incredibly powerful. The play with the dark and abyssal aspects of erotic fantasy is brilliantly staged through the skilful use of light and shadow. But Hamilton is also a poet, whose magical pictures invite their beholders to linger and enjoy icons of lust from another world. Many kinky images, and many images of explicit nudity. Hardcover, duotone.
Shot over a period of five years, in Tuscany Nudes Hegre shows more than 100 photographs that pay homage to the Renaissance, the flowing contours of his exquisitely proportioned female figures against a backdrop of elegant palaces. Hegre's nudes are completely natural, no artifice or accessories, the combination a blend of the classic and contemporary -- the realization of Hegre's youthful ambitions. We are in these photographs at once both in the present and transported back to some mystical time and place. Hegre has worked alone, without assistants, using primarily natural light and the rich ingredients of Tuscany; wine, olive oil, grape. A good proportion of the photographs in Tuscany Nudes was created at Villa Mangiacane, the 16th century stately home built for the Machiavelli family. The South African owner Glynn Cohen has restored the house and gardens to their original splendor, the ancient statuary and mesmerising pools creating a feeling that in Tuscany, time is eternal, as are Petter Hegre's photographs in this memorable collection. Foreword by Clifford Thurlow. Text in English, German, French and Italian.Petter Hegre's other collections include 100 Naked Girls, Luba, and Marketa. He studied at the Brooks Institute of Photography in California and worked in New York with Richard Avedon before returning to his native Norway.
Nordic Angels (German Edition)
n this unique photobook, the Swedish photographer Gerth Sernelin treats us to three decades of erotic photography. Rarely has the beauty of the nude female body been so candidly documented. Constantly changing fashions are also evident in these photos. In the 1970s, most of the models still had largely untamed, natural pubic hair. In the 1980s, a trend toward trimming and shaving led to progressively shorter pubic hair in narrower patches. Finally, the smooth and entirely hairless pudenda became the new ideal of beauty in the 1990s. Sernelin shows us the most beautiful women in intimate portraits. These angels from the Far North couldn't be photographed more erotically!

A1 Inheritance A2 Irreverence B1 Humanity B2 The Dilapidated RemainsIrreverence is the only refugeRecorded, mixed and mastered at Swan Sound Studio in June 2011.Irreverence" contains four new songs by Exhaustion from Caen (Fr)⦠These songs were recorded in the Normandy countryside at Swan Sound Studio by Guillaume "The Conqueror" Doussaud and are from the same session as their split with GaBLé. Exhaustion plays straightforward punk-hardcore influenced by several generations of punk bands from crust of the 80's to more modern stuff. Don't expect the now usual "neo-crust" thing but just some powerful punk made from d-beat rythmics, direct riffing, angry vocals and dark sociopolitical lyrics. This 7" comes with a 8 pages booklet containing lyrics and various texts dealing with the subjects treated in the songs : atheism, world wars influence on today's world, human self-limitation and self-destruction⦠It's a corelease with our long time friend and great label Stonehenge records.Released April 2012" - Destructure Records
Self Immolation Family b/w World Virgins
This is the second installment of Self Defense Family's "Island Series" of recordings.Recorded at "Sundlaugin" in Mosfellsbær, Iceland the studio owned by the band Sigur Ros. The session was engineered by Birgir Jón "Biggi" Birgisson."Provocative" is one of the best words to use when describing Self Defense Family. With this release, vocalist/lyricist Patrick Kindlon and Company continue down their well worn path of satire on the human condition. Here they offer up two new soul searching tales, fueled by tongue in cheek wit and teeth clashed angst. In both songs that make up this release, discordant melodies expand and contract around lackadaisical percussion, while Kindlon emotes and laments with true passion. There's no question, Self Defense Family still wear their DC influence well, but now it's tattered and torn; it's taking on their own shape. Melodic and infectious, inspiring yet at the same time, uniquely depressing. These songs are soundtrack for the solemn grey area in all of our lives. Another amazing release from one of the most interesting bands out there today.TRACK LISTING:01. Self Immolation Family02. World Virgins

The Good Book: A Humanist Bible
Few, if any, thinkers and writers today would have the imagination, the breadth of knowledge, the literary skill, and-yes-the audacity to conceive of a powerful, secular alternative to the Bible. But that is exactly what A.C. Grayling has done by creating a non-religious Bible, drawn from the wealth of secular literature and philosophy in both Western and Eastern traditions, using the same techniques of editing, redaction, and adaptation that produced the holy books of the Judaeo-Christian and Islamic religions. The Good Book consciously takes its design and presentation from the Bible, in its beauty of language and arrangement into short chapters and verses for ease of reading and quotability, offering to the non-religious seeker all the wisdom, insight, solace, inspiration, and perspective of secular humanist traditions that are older, far richer and more various than Christianity. Organized in 12 main sections----Genesis, Histories, Widsom, The Sages, Parables, Consolations, Lamentations, Proverbs, Songs, Epistles, Acts, and the Good----The Good Book opens with meditations on the origin and progress of the world and human life in it, then devotes attention to the question of how life should be lived, how we relate to one another, and how vicissitudes are to be faced and joys appreciated. Incorporating the writing of Herodotus and Lucretius, Confucius and Mencius, Seneca and Cicero, Montaigne, Bacon, and so many others, The Good Book will fulfill its audacious purpose in every way.

Nicholas Mahler; Translator-Kim Thompson
Easily the funniest super-hero comic to come down the pike since Harvey Kurtzman and Wally Wood's âSuperduperman!,â Angelman is Austrian cartoonist Nicolas Mahler's sardonic take on super-heroes, their fans, the businessmen behind them, the current media obsession with them, not to mention fancy-ass âUltimateâ collections of dopey super-hero comics.
Created by Korporate Comics in a flash of money-grubbing cynicism appalling even by their standards, Angelman's powers (which include empathy and the ability to be a good listener) prove less than adequate to deal with the sinister threat of the insane plastic-surgeon villain Gender Bender â or for that matter with the fickleness of fashion, the rapacious super-heroine Lady Dentata, the increasingly desperate re-boot attempts by Korporate Comics, his oddly twin-like wife, a disastrously bad movie adaptation that single-handedly brings the vogue for super-hero movies to a screeching halt⦠all delineated in Mahler's trademarked ultra-minimalism (albeit this time in spectacular color), and with his drier-than-dry wit.
Includes a special checklist/price list of Angelman comics, a gallery, and extensive historical and explanatory footnotes by the author, this book will occupy a place of pride on the bookshelf of any comic book geek â or anyone who just likes hilarious comics.

When There Is No Doctor: Preventive and Emergency Healthcare in Challenging Times (Process Self-reliance Series)
The fifth title in Process' Self-Reliance series demystifies medical practices with a practical approach to twenty-first-century health and home medicine, particularly helpful in a financial downturn.
When There Is No Doctor is smartly designed and full of medical tips and emergency suggestions. At a time when our health system has become particularly susceptible to strain, it should be no further than an arm's reach away in your household.
This is a book about sustainable health, primarily having to do with your health and what you can do to protect itâin bad times certainly, but also in good. I will help you ensure the health of those you love, yourself and, should you so choose, your community, if and when the world changes. World may come to mean your little town or the whole globe. It could change for a few days or weeks, or for a few years. It could change because of a flood, financial crisis, flu pandemic, or failure of our energy procurement, production or distribution systems.
I will not teach you to be a lone survivalist who anticipates doing an appendectomy on himself or a loved one on the kitchen table with a steak knife and a few spoons, although I will discuss techniques of austere and improvised medicine for really hard times.
Gerard S. Doyle, MD, teaches and practices emergency medicine at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he also plans the hospital's response to disasters.
Age of Greed: The Triumph of Finance and the Decline of America, 1970 to the Present (Vintage)
A vividly told history of how greed bred America's economic ills over the last forty years, and of the men most responsible for them.As Jeff Madrick makes clear in a narrative at once sweeping, fast-paced, and incisive, the single-minded pursuit of huge personal wealth has been on the rise in the United States since the 1970s, led by a few individuals who have argued that self-interest guides society more effectively than community concerns. These stewards of American capitalism have insisted on the central and essential place of accumulated wealth through the booms, busts, and recessions of the last half century, giving rise to our current woes.In telling the stories of these politicians, economists, and financiers who declared a moral battle for freedom but instead gave rise to an age of greed, Madrick traces the lineage of some of our nation's most pressing economic problems. He begins with Walter Wriston, head of what would become Citicorp, who led the battle against government regulation. He examines the ideas of economist Milton Friedman, who created the plan for an anti-Rooseveltian America; the politically expedient decisions of Richard Nixon that fueled inflation; the philosophy of Alan Greenspan, on whose libertarian ideology a house of cards was built on Wall Street; and the actions of Sandy Weill, who constructed the largest financial institution in the world, which would have gone bankrupt in 2008 without a federal bailout of $45 billion. Significant figures including Ivan Boesky, Michael Milken, Jack Welch, and Ronald Reagan play key roles as well.Intense economic inequity and instability is the story of our age, and Jeff Madrick tells it with style, clarity, and an unerring command of his subject.
Irritate hail from Finland and have been playing their own style of grind for years. After numerous split EP, CD, and compilation releases Irritate now rock a full length 7 EP. Wild Coast: Travels on South Americas Untamed Edge (Vintage Departures)
Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana are among the least-known places in South America: nine hundred miles of muddy coastline giving way to a forest so dense that even today there are virtually no roads through it; a string of rickety coastal towns situated between the mouths of the Orinoco and Amazon Rivers, where living is so difficult that as many Guianese live abroad as in their homelands; an interior of watery, green anarchy where border disputes are often based on ancient Elizabethan maps, where flora and fauna are still being discovered, where thousands of rivers remain mostly impassable. And under the lens of John Gimletteâbrilliantly offbeat, irreverent, and cannyâthese three small countries are among the most wildly intriguing places on earth. On an expedition that will last three months, he takes us deep into a remarkable world of swamp and jungle, from the hideouts of runaway slaves to the vegetation-strangled remnants of penal colonies and forts, from âLittle Parisâ to a settlement built around a satellite launch pad. He recounts the complicated, often surprisingly bloody, history of the regionâincluding the infamous 1978 cult suicide at Jonestownâand introduces us to its inhabitants: from the world's largest ants to fluorescent purple frogs to head-crushing jaguars; from indigenous tribes who still live by sorcery to descendants of African slaves, Dutch conquerors, Hmong refugees, Irish adventurers, and Scottish outlaws; from high-tech pirates to hapless pioneers for whom this stunning, strangely beautiful world (âa sort of X-rated Garden of Edenâ) has become home by choice or by force. In Wild Coast, John Gimlette guides us through a fabulously entertaining, eye-openingâand sometimes jaw-droppingâjourney.
India: A Portrait (Vintage Departures)
A monumental biography of the subcontinent from the award-winning author of The World Is What It Is: The Authorized Biography of V. S. Naipaul.Second only to China in the magnitude of its economic miracle and second to none in its potential to shape the new century, India is fast undergoing one of the most momentous transformations the world has ever seen. In this dazzlingly panoramic book, Patrick French chronicles that epic change, telling human stories to explain a larger national narrative.Melding on-the-ground reports with a deep knowledge of history, French exposes the cultural foundations of Indiaâs political, economic and social complexities. He reveals how a nation identified with some of the most wretched poverty on earth has simultaneously developed an envied culture of entrepreneurship (here are stories like that of C. K. Ranganathan, who trudged the streets of Cuddalore in the 1980s selling sample packets of shampoo and now employs more than one thousand people). And even more remarkably, French shows how, despite the ancient and persistent traditions of caste, as well as a mind-boggling number of ethnicities and languages, India has nevertheless managed to cohere, evolving into the worldâs largest democracy, largely fulfilling Jawaharlal Nehruâs dream of a secular liberal order.Frenchâs inquiry goes to the heart of all the puzzlements that modern India presents: Is this country actually rich or poor? Why has its Muslim population, the second largest on earth, resisted radicalization to such a considerable extent? Why do so many children of Indians who have succeeded in the West want to return âhome,â despite never having lived in India? Will India become a natural ally of the West, a geostrategic counterweight to the illiberal rising powers China and Russia? To find the answers, French seeks out an astonishing range of characters: from Maoist revolutionaries to Mafia dons, from chained quarry laborers to self-made billionaires. And he delves into the personal lives of the political elite, including the Italian-born Sonia Gandhi, one of the most powerful women in the world. With a familiarity and insight few Westerners could approach, Patrick French provides a vital corrective to the many outdated notions about a uniquely dynamic and consequential nation. His India is a thrilling revelation.

Brigham Young: American Moses (Vintage)
Brigham Young comes to life in this superlative biography that presents him as a Mormon leader, a business genius, a family man, a political organizer, and a pioneer of the West. Drawing on a vast range of sources, including documents, personal diaries, and private correspondence, Leonard J. Arrington brings Young to life as a towering yet fully human figure, the remarkable captain of his people and his church for thirty years, who combined piety and the pursuit of power to leave an indelible stamp on Mormon society and the culture of the Western frontier. From polygamy to the Mountain Meadows Massacre to the attempted preservation of Youngâs Great Basin Kingdom, we are given a fresh understanding of the controversies that plagued Young in his contentious relations with the federal government. Brigham Young draws its subject out of the marginal place in history to which the conventional wisdom has assigned him, and sets him squarely in the American mainstream, a figure of abiding influence in our society to this day.
What a Wonderful World: The Magic of Louis Armstrongs Later Years
Prodigiously researched and richly detailed, this is a comprehensive account of the remarkable final twenty-five years of the life and art of one of Americaâs greatest and most beloved musical icons. Much has been written about Louis Armstrong, but the majority of it focuses on the early and middle stages of his long career. Now, Ricky Riccardiâjazz scholar and musicianâtakes an in-depth look at the years in which Armstrong was often dismissed as a buffoonish, if popular, entertainer, and shows us instead the inventiveness and depth of expression that his music evinced during this time. These are the years (from after World War II until his death in 1971) when Armstrong entertained crowds around the world and recorded his highest-charting hits, including âMack the Knifeâ and âHello, Dolly!â; years when he collaborated with, among others, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, and Dave Brubeck; when he recorded with strings and big bands, and, of course, with the All Stars, his primary recording ensemble for more than two decades. Riccardi makes clear that these were years in which Armstrong both burnished and enhanced his legacy as one of jazzâs most influential figures. Eminently readable, informative, and insightful, here, finally, is a book that enlarges and completes our understanding of a peerless musical genius of commanding influence as both an instrumentalist and a vocalis

Dexter is displeased. Like any self-respecting, totally decent, soundly homicidal guy, Dexter Morgan takes great pride in his work and is careful to remain anonymous. So he is, naturally, upset to discover that someone has identified him and--worst of all--is now turning his own methods against him. The situation soon becomes more complicated when a brutal cop-killer begins targeting Miami's police detectives--leaving behind bodies that are battered beyond recognition--and stoking the department's worst fears. As his colleagues grow more paranoid of the psychotic killer in their midst, Dexter's position is increasingly perilous. He is running out of time to track down this copycat and deliver his usual special justice, before his dark hobby is revealed to the world.
Signs and Wonders (Vintage Contemporaries Original)
Ohlinâs (Babylon and Other Stories) second winning short story collection grapples with the trappings of love and loss as the characters in each of its 16 offerings bumble through, stomaching what life has dealt them. Many of the tightly crafted vignettes follow predictable yet nonetheless engrossing plot lines, from adjusting to a divorce while on a cruise in the Galápagos (âThe Cruiseâ), to being jilted by a once-spurned lover years after the initial flirtation (âWho Do You Love?â), to once privileged college students learning the ropes of New York City living as lowly help in arty offices (âThe Assistantsâ). Where Ohlin really shines is in drawing out the unexpected in ordinary situations without stepping too close to the edge. In âForks,â a doctor helps his girlfriendâs addict brother commit suicideâor so itâs implied. The almost unpalatable circumstances in âRobbing the Cradleââa happy coupleâs inability to conceiveâare turned upside down when the wife seduces a teenage boy, intent on becoming pregnant and saving her marriage. The title story finds a wife forced to care for her suddenly comatose husband the night after the two decide to divorce. While not all hit their intended mark, these snippets of lifeâs upheavals highlight Ohlinâs keen eye for observation.
The Inspector and Silence: An Inspector Van Veeteren Mystery (Vintage Crime/Black Lizard)
It's a sweltering summer in Sweden and Chief Inspector Van Veeteren is long overdue for a holiday when a secretive and dubious religious sect comes under investigation. One of its members, a girl on the cusp of adolescence, is found dead in the forest near their holiday camp, brutally raped and strangled; the discovery of her body has been phoned in by an anonymous caller. The members of the sect, the Pure Life, are led by Oscar Yellinek, a charismatic but unnervingly guarded messiah figure. In an act that mystifies and infuriates Van Veeteren and his associates, the members of the Pure Life choose to remain silent about the incident rather than defend themselves. But an unidentified woman is continuing to assist the authorities, and her knowledge suggests she's more than just a passing Good Samaritan. Her tips become doubly perplexing as a new string of increasingly horrifying crimes defy everything Van Veeteren and his team thought they knew about the case. A riveting new addition to HÃ
kan Nesser's acclaimed series, The Inspector and Silenceis suspense at its haunting best. From the Hardcover edition.
Daughters of the Revolution (Vintage Contemporaries)
From the O. Henry Awardâwinning author of the story collection The Bostonsâa New York Times Notable Book, Los Angeles Times Book of the Year and winner of the PEN/Robert Bingham Fellowship for Writersâan exquisite first novel set at a disintegrating New England prep school.Itâs 1968. The prestigious but cash-strapped Goode School in the town of Cape Wilde is run by its aging, philandering headmaster, Goddard Byrd, known to both his friends and his enemies as God. With Cape Wilde engulfed by the social and political storms of integration, coeducation and the sexual revolution, God has confidently promised coeducation âover my dead body.â And then, through a clerical error, the Goode School admits its first female student: Carole Faust, a brilliant, intractable fifteen-year-old black girl. What does it mean to be the First Girl? Carolyn Cooke has written a ferociously intelligent, richly sensual novel about the lives of girls and women, the complicated desperation of daughters without fathers and the erosion of paternalistic power in an elite New England town on the cusp of radical social change. Remarkable for the precision of its language, the incandescence of its images, and the sly provocations of its moral and emotional predicaments, Daughters of the Revolution is a novel of exceptional force and beauty.
False Negative (Hard Case Crime)
Adam Jordan wrote the best and worst articles of his journalistic career on the same day. The worst was bad enough to get him fired - but the best landed him a new job, penning lurid articles for Real Detective magazine, one of the last of the true-crime pulps. Only the case they've got him working on, involving a beauty pageant contestant found dead on an Atlantic City beach, is one some very powerful men would rather see covered up than covered. And if Adam keeps digging, he may find he's digging his own grave..

Kiss Her Goodbye: An Otto Penzler Book (Mike Hammer)
Mike Hammer has been away from New York too long when he learns that an old mentor on the New York police force has committed suicide. Suspicious, Hammer returns for the funeral. When a woman is murdered practically on the funeral home's doorstep, he gets drawn into the hunt for Nazi diamonds, a mysterious beauty who was close to Doolan in his final days, and a gang of drug racketeers. Soon Hammer is hobnobbing with coke-snorting celebrities at a notorious disco. Everything leads to a Mafia social club where Hammer and his .45 come calling, sparking the wildest showdown since Spillane's classic One Lonely Night.â[Spillane's and Collins's] risks pay off on the page, resulting in some of the finest novels of their respective careers . . . Kiss Her Goodbye is a throwback in the best sense of the word: it reminds us why Spillane was so good in the first place; and Collins, too . . . This is action-mystery par excellence.â â Los Angeles Review of Books
It has been eight long years since Oaklandâs Brainoil released their first self-titled LP via Life Is Abuse way back in 2003. At that time the bandâs combination of crushingly oppressive but up-tempo sludge and Oakland hardcore punk was well regarded in the underground and saw the band tour both domestically and abroad. Subsequently the bandâs three members, Greg, Ira and Nate, all drifted toward their myriad other projects and Brainoil, though not officially dead, were essentially put on ice.The band regrouped slowly over these last few years and it has resulted in Brainoilâs first batch of tunes for the new decade. Death Of This Dry Season picks up the furious hardcore sludge sound that Brainoil is well known for as though theyâd never left. A little older and a little wiser (?), Death Of This Dry Season is a short, sharp shock of intense aural battery, conceivably like an amalgamation of other ugly sounding Bay Area stalwarts such as Abscess, El Dopa and Black Cobra, yet never sounding enough like anyone else to pinpoint a direct influence. This sound can only be named Brainoil.Continuing 20 Buck Spinâs long support of bands from our original home base of the East Bay Area, we are glad to help re-introduce Brainoil to the current underground sceneâs many adherents both old and new. Death Of This Dry Season marks a welcome and inexorable return to form by one of Oaklandâs most noted acts. - 20 Buck Spin

Here's the third installment of mayhem from the almighty OBSESSOR. As usual, its two more songs, that are nor too short nor too long- just right, leaving fans wanting more. This time around we hear more of a Burning Spirits Metallic Japanese hc ala Deathside feel and also more Poison Idea Influence as well on In fear of the end." The second song "Aftershock" has a more speed picking thrash metal feel, being the fastest song OBSESSOR has released yet. These 2 songs are stand outs, with the focus on quality not quantity, as it always will be." - Tankcrimes
The House of Mirth (Vintage Classics)
An immensely popular bestseller upon its publication in 1905, The House of Mirth was Edith Whartonâs first great novel. Set among the elegant brownstones of New York City and opulent country houses like gracious Bellomont on the Hudson, the novel creates a satiric portrayal of what Wharton herself called âa society of irresponsible pleasure-seekersâ with a precision comparable to that of Proust. And her brilliant and complex characterization of the doomed Lily Bart, whose stunning beauty and dependence on marriage for economic survival reduce her to a decorative object, becomes an incisive commentary on the nature and status of women in that society. From her tragic attraction to bachelor lawyer Lawrence Selden to her desperate relationship with social-climbing Rosedale, Lily is all too much a product of the world indicated by the title, a phrase taken from Ecclesiastes: âThe heart of fools is in the house of mirth.â For it is Lilyâs very specialness that threatens the elegance and fulfillment she seeks in life. Along with the authorâs other masterpiece, The Age of Innocence, this novel claims a place among the finest American novels of manners.
The Optimism Bias: A Tour of the Irrationally Positive Brain (Vintage)
From one of the most innovative neuroscientists at work today, an investigation into the bias toward optimism that exists on a neural level in our brains and plays a major part in determining how we live our lives. Psychologists have long been aware that most people maintain an often irrationally positive outlook on life. In fact, optimism may be crucial to our existence. Tali Sharot's experiments, research, and findings in cognitive science have contributed to an increased understanding of the biological basis of optimism. In this fascinating exploration, she takes an in-depth, clarifying look at how the brain generates hope and what happens when it fails; how the brains of optimists and pessimists differ; why we are terrible at predicting what will make us happy; how emotions strengthen our ability to recollect; how anticipation and dread affect us; and how our optimistic illusions affect our financial, professional, and emotional decisions. With its cutting-edge science and its wide-ranging and accessible narrative, The Optimism Bias provides us with startling new insight into the workings of the brain.
The Custom of the Country (Vintage Classics)
Edith Wharton's lacerating satire on marriage and materialism in turn-of-the-century New York features her most selfish, ruthless, and irresistibly outrageous female character. Undine Spragg is an exquisitely beautiful but ferociously acquisitive young woman from the Midwest who comes to New York to seek her fortune. She achieves her social ambitions--but only at the highest cost to her family, her admirers, and her several husbands. Wharton lavished on Undine an imaginative energy that suggests she was as fascinated as she was appalled by the alluring monster she had created. It is the complexity of her attitude that makes "The Custom of the Country"--with its rich social and emotional detail and its headlong narrative power--one of the most fully realized and resonant of her works.
The Myth of Sisyphus: And Other Essays
The Myth of Sisyphusis one of the most profound philosophical statements written this century. It is a discussion of the central idea of absurdity that Camus was to develop in his novel The Outsider. Here Camus poses the fundamental question: Is life worth living? If existence has ceased to retain significance when confronted with the fragmented reality of the human condition, what then can keep us from suicide? Camus movingly argues for an acceptance of reality that encompasses revolt, passion and, above all, liberty. This volume contains several other essays, including lyrical evocations of the sunlit cities of Algiers and Oran. 'Probably no European writer of his time left so deep a mark on the imagination.' Conor Cruise O'Brien
The Age of Innocence (Vintage Classics)
Newland Archer saw little to envy in the marriages of his friends, yet he prided himself that in May Welland he had found the companion of his needs--tender and impressionable, with equal purity of mind and manners. The engagement was announced discreetly, but all of New York society was soon privy to this most perfect match, a union of families and circumstances cemented by affection. Enter Countess Olenska, a woman of quick wit sharpened by experience, not afraid to flout convention and determined to find freedom in divorce. Against his judgment, Newland is drawn to the socially ostracized Ellen Olenska, who opens his eyes and has the power to make him feel. He knows that in sweet-tempered May, he can expect stability and the steadying comfort of duty. But what new worlds could he discover with Ellen? Written with elegance and wry precision, Edith Wharton's Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece is a tragic love story and a powerful homily about the perils of a perfect marriage.
London, 1914. Two young women dream of breaking free from tradition and obligation; they know that suffragettes are on the march and that war looms, but at 35 Park Lane, Lady Masters, head of a dying industrial dynasty, insists that life is about service and duty.
Ethan Frome (Vintage Classics)
Edith Wharton's most widely read work is a tightly constructed and almost unbearably heartbreaking story of forbidden love in a snowbound New England village. This brilliantly wrought, tragic novella explores the repressed emotions and destructive passions of working-class people far removed from the elevated social milieu usually inhabited by Wharton's characters. Ethan Frome is a poor farmer, trapped in a marriage to a demanding and controlling wife, Zeena. When Zeena's young cousin Mattie enters their household she opens a window of hope in Ethan's bleak life, but his wife's reaction prompts a desperate attempt to escape fate that goes horribly wrong. "Ethan Frome" is an unforgettable story with the force of myth, featuring realistic and haunting characters as vivid as any Wharton ever conjured.
The Cats Table (Vintage International)
In the early 1950s, an eleven-year-old boy in Colombo boards a ship bound for England. At mealtimes he is seated at the âcat's tableââas far from the Captain's Table as can beâwith a ragtag group of âinsignificantâ adults and two other boys, Cassius and Ramadhin. As the ship crosses the Indian Ocean, the boys tumble from one adventure to another, bursting all over the place like freed mercury. But there are other diversions as well: they are first exposed to the magical worlds of jazz, women, and literature by their eccentric fellow travelers, and together they spy on a shackled prisoner, his crime and fate a galvanizing mystery that will haunt them forever. By turns poignant and electrifying, The Cat's Table is a spellbinding story about the magical, often forbidden, discoveries of childhood, and a lifelong journey that begins unexpectedly with a spectacular sea voyage.
Jamrachs Menagerie: A Novel (Vintage)
SHORTLISTED for the 2011 Man Booker Prize for Fiction A thrilling and powerful novel about a young boy lured to sea by the promise of adventure and reward, with echoes of Great Expectations, Moby-Dick,and The Voyage of the Narwhal. J amrach's Menagerietells the story of a nineteenth-century street urchin named Jaffy Brown. Following an incident with an escaped tiger, Jaffy goes to work for Mr. Charles Jamrach, the famed importer of exotic animals, alongside Tim, a good but sometimes spitefully competitive boy. Thus begins a long, close friendship fraught with ambiguity and rivalry. Mr. Jamrach recruits the two boys to capture a fabled dragon during the course of a three-year whaling expediè² ion. Onboard, Jaffy and Tim enjoy the rough brotherhood of sailors and the brutal art of whale hunting. They even succeed in catching the reptilian beast. But when the ship's whaling venture falls short of expectaè² ions, the crew begins to regard the dragon-seething with feral power in its cage-as bad luck, a feeling that is cruelly reinforced when a violent storm sinks the ship. Drifting across an increasingly hallucinatory ocean, the surèµ³ivors, including Jaffy and Tim, are forced to confront their own place in the animal kingdom. Masterfully told, wildly atmospheric, and thundering with tension, Jamrach's Menaèerieis a truly haunting novel about friendship, sacrifice, and survival.

lux is the 1981 debut solo outing of Robert Turman, an American multi-instrumentalist and avant-garde composer. Until recently, Turman was perhaps best known for his contributions to the ballistic NON project with Boyd Rice, as well as other obscured U.S. industrial acts such as Z.O. Voider. In the summer of 1981, Turman decided he would take a drastic turn from the noisy/electronic/industrial work of his compatriots, and began work on what is now the classic Flux cassette. Flux was originally self-released in extremely limited numbers. Weary of the noisescapes of old, he set out to create long-form minimalism utilizing kalimba, piano, "Mini-Pops Jr." drum machine, and tape loops to create a complex bed of interweaving micro-stasis. The results of these new experiments were as beautiful as they were perplexing. A curious, dusty fidelity carries these classic tracks across four sides of vinyl, including all of the original Flux content. These compositions glow with a sprawling, slow-motion haze that's light years ahead of its time. Flux reveals wide spectrums of sound from melancholic kalimba and percussion patterns to slowed-down, syrupy exotica. Turman had complex ideas in his mind, yet only the simple technologies of the day were at hand. Hear the click of the stopping and starting Tascam 3340 open-reel tape machine as one hand presses the "record" and "play" buttons and the other plays piano phrases. While there are similarities in style to classical minimalism, Turman's sound and vision is his own and is exclusive to his limited discography. Lovingly remastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering from the original C-60 cassette master. Original cassette artwork and scans provided by Aaron Dilloway.
Guitars From Agadez (Music of Niger) (Reis)
2011repress of the first Group Inerane album from 2008. Group Inerane is the now sound of the Tuareg Guitar Revolution sweeping across the Sahara Desert and inspired by the rebel musicians that started this music as a political weapon used to communicate from the Libyan Refugee camps in the 1980s and 1990s. Spearheaded by the enigmatic guitar hero Bibi Ahmed, Group Inerane has been together for several years and carries the rich tradition of Tamachek guitar songs for another generation. These ten tracks are a combination of amplified roots rock, blues, and folk in the local Tuareg styles, at times entering into full-on electric guitar psychedelia. This music is performed with two electric guitars, a drum kit and a chorus of vocalists. The recordings were captured live in the city of Agadez in the Republic of Niger. Group Inerane was also featured in the Sublime Frequencies DVD Niger: Magic and Ecstasy in the Sahel. Recorded by Hisham Mayet, this CD reissue includes an 8-page insert with photos of the musicians and liner notes.
Guitar Music From the Western Sahara (Reis)
2010 repress. If you think you've heard all the great electric guitar styles in the world, think again. This Saharan sand-blizzard of fine-crushed glass will grind your face to a bloody pulp. Group Doueh play raw and unfiltered Saharawi music from the former colonial Spanish outpost of the Western Sahara. Doueh (pronounced "Doo-way") is their leader and a master of the electric guitar. He's been performing since he was a child playing in many groups before finally creating his own in the 1980s. Doueh says he's influenced by Western pop and rock music especially Jimi Hendrix and James Brown. His sound is distorted, loud and unhinged with an impressive display of virtuosity and style only known in this part of the world. His wife Halima and friend Bashiri are the two vocalists in the group. Sahrawi songs are from the sung poetry of the Hassania language. The music is based on the same modal structure as Mauritanian music, however, Doueh's style is a looser appropriation infused with a Western guitar scope, one that relies, in his words, as much on Hendrix as it does traditional Sahrawi music. It also adds a playful pop element that rarely filters through in this region. Doueh has turned down countless offers from Morocco and Europe to release his music but he decided to offer Sublime Frequencies access to his homemade recordings and photo archive for this amazing debut. CD reissue of the first Sublime Frequencies LP release. Standard Sublime Frequencies 8-page CD insert includes great photos of the musicians and liner notes by Hisham Mayet.

Radio Thailand: Transmissions From the Tropical
2006 release, repressed! This 2CD set is an exhaustive collection of Thai Radio transmissions recorded over a 15-year period from 1989 to 2004. These 23 collage tracks have been assembled and distilled from dozens of cassette and mini-disc recordings captured on location from the capital of Bangkok to Chaing Mai and Isan Province in the north to Hat Yai in the south. The music presented here is relentlessly mystifying and seductive: Molam, Luk Thung, Kantrum, folk and pop, classic Thai guitar rock, antique ballads, novelty tunes, traditional ceremonial music and other miscellaneous styles rarely heard outside the Kingdom. Also featured are various commercials, DJs, radio IDs, news reports, mysterious folk radio, language lessons, sacred chants, bumper cues and plenty of audio anomalies only the sheer genius of Thai Radio can supply. Tune in to the amazing audio experience of Thailand's Tropical Kingdom!
2005 release, repressed! "Cambodia's people, economy, and culture have been 're-mixed' perhaps more than any place on earth for the past 50 years. The name was even changed to Kampuchea and then back again to Cambodia. So it almost seems natural that modern Cambodian record companies have been re-mixing the old classic pop and rock tracks from the pre-Khmer Rouge era, overdubbing drum tracks, and sometimes all instruments leaving only the original vocal in tact. These re-mixes, designed to hold the interest of younger listeners, are the staple for current programming on Phnom Penh's FM radio stations as the AM flagship 'National Radio of Cambodia' remains the only source regularly featuring the original master recordings. This brain-melting concoction of Radio transmissions is a combination of AM/FM samples from the airwaves of Phnom Penh. The older, classic Pop/Rock FM cuts are ALL re-mixed versions while the newer forms/other styles of Cambodian music collected here are not. All AM recordings are from the Original masters. Regardless of the debate between 'original' and 're-mix', this is the most diverse assortment of Cambodian musical treasures you've NEVER heard. Flowing from traditional to Modern, from rock and pop to folk and hybrid, all excerpts are as unique as the best of what's been presented by other compilations of late. And it's sequenced here in the spirit of how it was captured: as radio programming designed to immediately transport you into the heart of Cambodia's Capital."
2005 release, repressed. "Streets of Lhasa lifts us to the high plateau of Tibet where anonymous street balladeers sell folk songs for a living and ghostly voices drift in an ambience of time forgotten. Children, birds, trains, prayers and a traditional temple activity called 'bian jing' (where monks discourse about scripture and punctuate their points by clapping loudly) provide the backdrop for this disc with the folk music of the street taking center stage. These enterprising musicians sing passionate songs and play instruments like the 'Erhu' and the 'San Xian'. The recordings are as clear as the strings of these banjo and violin-like instruments scathed by leather fingers of the high, thin air. Tibet has been under Chinese control for nearly half a century and their leader, The Dalai Lama, resides in exile to the south in Dharamsala India. Buddhism remains of primary importance here and chants of song and prayer are heard throughout the plateau. This ornamental carnival of sound was recorded by Zhang Jian (of the Beijing-based sound collective 'fm3') on the streets of Lhasa, ZhaDa and Shigatse in August 2003. Liner notes written by Steve Barker (ON THE WIRE/BBC)."
Night Recordings From Bali
The island of Bali is Indonesia's most popular place. With the modern beach resorts at Kuta and Legian, the lovely, tropic interior of palm-covered hills and rice paddies, and a rich variety of art, dance and music, the island is a destination of choice for travelers around the world. But, regardless of their increasing role of servicing an ever-demanding tourist industry, the Balinese are a strong-willed and tight-knit society. The island is a tiny enclave of Hinduism within a massive nation of Islam, yet, their Gamelan music is faster, tighter, and louder than their mighty neighbors to the west, the Javanese. Balinese Gamelan stylings and the Ketchak dance are legendary throughout the world and have been immortalized in sound recordings and on film for decades. But, beneath the creeping exterior of a pseudo-western culture slowly overtaking an amazing tradition of unique human expression, the moods of the island are governed by magic and superstition. The hills, forests, rivers, and crossroads are alive with tales of demons (Leyaks) and a flesh-eating Ogress (Rangda). A lesser-known darker side of Balinese life secretly balances the lighter side 'tropical paradise' of tourist brochures. This CD is entirely composed of field recordings from August and September of 1989. The majority of the recordings were made at night in and around the villages of Peliatan and Ubud. Amidst the excerpts from Gamelan and Ketchak are sounds of the forests and mysterious crossroads where packs of dogs seem to take on forms of angry demons. Also encountered here are odd folk stylings for flute and drum, outdoor village theatre, and other sound anomalies from the center of Balinese culture."
ver two years in the making, Cold Pin is the new full-length record by Eli Keszler. Both a composition and stand-alone installation, 14 strings ranging in length from 25 to 3 feet are strung across a 15x40 curved wall, with motors attacking the strings, connected by microcontrollers, pick-ups and RCA cables. Recorded in Boston's historic Cyclorama, a massive dome built to house the Cyclorama of the Battle of Gettysburg painting in 1884. The B-side features, in addition, a "dry" version of the installation with motor attacks on metal squares rather than strings, creating dense percussive clusters. Cold Pin works within the frame work of left-to-right time and vertical structure. The installation acts as the architecture of the music, surrounding and immersing the live instruments into incredible density and sharp, angular mass shapes, and functions alone as the performers stop. Rather than an individual sound, the sustained horns, strings, drums and metallic attacks function as a singular unit, and continue, too, when they stop alongside the installation. Cold Pin features Eli Keszler (drums, crotales installation and guitar), Geoff Mullen (guitar), Ashley Paul (clarinet, guitar, greenbox), Greg Kelley (trumpet), Reuben Son (bassoon) and Benjamin Nelson (cello). Eli Keszler is a composer, artist and multi-instrumentalist based in New York City. In performance, he often plays drums, bowed crotales and guitar in conjunction with his installations. In his ensemble compositions, he uses extended strings, motors, crotales, horns and mechanical devices to create his sound, balancing intense harmonic formations with acoustic sustain, fast, jarring rhythm, mechanical propulsion, dense textures and detailed visual presentations. He has most recently won the Mata composers competition for the 2012 season. Eli Keszler is a graduate of the New England Conservatory in Boston where he studied with Anthony Coleman and Ran Blake. Limited edition of 500 copies, pressed on 140 gram vinyl housed in a silk screened PVC sleeve. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering.
The inquisitive minds behind Pre-Cert Home Entertainment and Finders Keepers combine to bring you the results of some of their most subaqueous vinyl, tape and film excavations yet for this brand-new label: Dead-Cert. Taking the combined obsessions of all its collaborators and applying it to an intensive research model investigating vintage outsider music, sound sculpture, spoken word, ethnological documents, Art-Trash, early computer music, Neotantrik music, tape manipulation, non-pop and vinyl voyeurism, the label aims to investigate and recontextualize previously un-heard recordings from sources that transcend and eclipse the limitations of the record-collecting trend and the commercial music industry. All scheduled recordings are pressed on vinyl LPs mastered in accordance with the original creators' instructions and cut at the most relevant volume and playing speed, duplicated in modest quantities and housed in a variety of bespoke or homemade packaging, faithful to the original pressings. The first archival release on the label is a new pressing of an original vinyl run of around 50 copies only made in 1970 for an art gallery exhibition in Brussels documenting a sound sculpture collaboration between hard material artist Harold Paris and fledgling electronic composer Susan (Suzanne) Ciani. This original limited gift/art-artifact is officially the rarest tangible recording of Ciani's music, who is now recognized in the press as "The Delia Derbyshire Of The Atari Generation" on account of her groundbreaking developments in the commercial evolution of synthesizer music as one of a small number of female composers in the field. Paris created an original Mylar cover for the album, which is now an almost impossible-to-find collector's item. Ciani produced this, her first album, at radio station KPFA in Berkeley, CA, where she was given access to the tape machines from midnight until 6 AM, gratis. She owns only one copy of this work in its original vinyl form. Vinyl cut at Dubplates & Mastering and made in an edition of 1,000 copies only, housed in individually screen-printed silver foil sleeves faithful to the original pressing.

Pakistan: Folk & Pop Instrumentals 1966-1976
Spending the greater part of the last decade assembling this masterpiece while tracking down most of the musicians in the process, Stuart Ellis of Radiodiffusion International has compiled a mind-blowing set of Pakistani instrumentals spanning the period between 1966 and 1976. It's all here: rock and roll beat, surf, folk traditional mixed with pop, film tunes, electric guitars, sitar and organ solos, brilliant percussion and arrangements crafted by the grooviest bands of the period: The Panthers, The Mods, The Bugs, The Blue Birds, The Abstracts, The Aay Jays, The Fore Thoughts, Nisar Bazmi, and Sohail Rana. Situated between Afghanistan, India and Iran, the collision of cultural influences in Pakistan gave birth to music that was, and still is, unlike anything heard anywhere else on the planet. By the late 1960s, previous restrictions on musical expression began to soften and bands that were playing American and British pop covers became popular in Karachi's burgeoning night club scene and at private dance parties. Long hair came into fashion among young men and hashish became the popular drug of choice on college campuses across Pakistan. Soon, hippies from both North America and Europe began flocking to Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar. Very few of the bands that formed during this time actually got to record. Like their neighbors in India, the Pakistani record industry was more focused on releasing "filmi" music, which had just started to incorporate the electric guitar and electric sitar. Pakistan's musical revolution ended in June 1977 after a coup d'état and the establishment of a pure Islamic state governed by Sharia law. This marked the end of the "Swinging '70s" in Pakistan as night clubs and alcohol were banned throughout the country. Television and cinema, as well as popular music, were now subjected to government censorship. After the clamp-down, many Pakistani musicians left the country and moved to America, Canada and England. The audio quality here is top-notch, sourced straight from the original EMI Pakistan masters. This limited 2LP set is housed in a heavy-duty full-color gatefold jacket with superb photos of the musicians and extended liner notes by compiler Stuart Ellis.

The Cleansing Power Of Fruit
Despite Matt Krefting's resistance to all things fruity, there is little doubt that these friendly non-mineral, non-animal products of nature have the capacity to flush poisons through our internal trails far better than 'most anything else. Especially eggs. Still, it is an egg that remains Dave "Mr. E. Candy" Russell's muse as he fumbles his way through a vocal universe that is collapsing around his French ears. Something like a cross between Crocus Behemoth, Little Lulu and Colonel Bruce Hampton, Russell is on fire here, his vocals emerging from fruit-caked lips as though they were pearls shot from the buttocks of an all-seeing vizier. What Russell does exactly is hard to say, but its slow-kid, sing-song quality is bizarrely captivating. And the band here is a goddamn all-star Valley ensemble -- Tim Sheldon, Andy Crespo, Brett Robinson, Ted Lee, Vanessa Brewster, John Moloney, Jack Callahan, Ian St. George and special guests -- Matt Valentine, Jeff Hartford, Conrad Capistran and Lisette Lopez. Recorded over the last couple of years in various places around Western Massachusetts, it makes a strong case for Egg Eggs as the most discordian combo in this part of the universe. The comparison your brain will keep returning to is the Hampton Grease Band, updated to shine stylishly in a post-noise-rock milieu. It shares the same mix of brilliance, annoyingness and sheer what-the-fuckery as Music To Eat. And that ain't hay. Nor is it fruit. Hurray!
First album by Glenna Van Nostrand, a Cambridge, MA-based performance artist obsessed with archaic telecommunication hardware. Using solo vocals run through an old telephone, amplified by a variety of radios, her work creates its own rhythms through hypnotic layering, repetition and the imperfections built into her chosen delivery system. Alternately ethereal and cracked, her performance takes simple kernels of thought and speech, creating mystifying vistas of otherness that hint at the eternal now. The only specific musical accompaniment comes from her use of a telephone's touch pad as a keyboard, but the rich weirdness of her compositions is consistent and dazzling. The album was recorded, mixed, and mastered at Machines With Magnets with Keith Souza and Seth Manchester in Providence. Are you ready for two side-long slices of the Omnivore experience? Picture disc version, limited to 500 copies."Hatesville is a collection of songs by The Boyd Rice Experience, The Partridge in the Pear Tree, Adam Parfrey and Jim Goad. It was originally released in 1995, but quickly went out of print, and has until today commanded absurd prices from collectors. Folk & Pop Sounds of Sumatra 1/ Various
Limited edition full-color gatefold LP version of the first Sublime Frequencies CD release from 2003. The equator runs through only ten countries on earth and I bet that you cannot name them all without consulting a map. Indonesia is one of them and the only nation in Asia with the equatorial stripe impaling it. There are so many different cultures spread out on this chain of islands that it would take several lifetimes to experience them all properly. Within this umbrella of diversity is one of the world's richest and most dazzling sound museums. Sumatra is the northwestern entry point to the great archipelago. Approximately the size of California, Indonesia's largest island has a wide variety of natural wonders: dense jungles, picturesque mountain peaks, gargantuan lakes, lowland swamps, active volcanoes, and highly frequent seismic activity. Populating this gorgeous setting are orangutans, tigers, durian trees, the largest flower on earth, dozens of cultures and languages, myths and folklore, and much more music than you've ever been allowed to discover. The style selections on this LP include forms of droning beat pop, early Orkes Melayu songs, Batak Tapanuli, traditional Minang music, and folk drama soundtracks heard by only a handful of outsiders. The recordings are from old cassette tapes; decaying documents of various sound qualities containing some of the most eccentric artifacts ever uncovered from this fascinating island. Assembled and compiled by Alan Bishop (Sun City Girls) in July of 1989.
