A brighter tomorrow
Approximately 15 per cent of APM Terminals Mumbaiâs total annual power requirements will be supplied by solar panels installed across the facility once the Solar Panel Installation Project launched in 2015. Indiaâs busiest terminal by container volume celebrated the launch of this initiative on 1 February.
Inaugurating the project, Peder Sondergaard, Head â Middle-East, Africa, South Asia (MEAS) APM Terminals said he was delighted to be part of the solar panel initiative undertaken at APM Terminals Mumbai.
âThe approach taken by our terminal in Mumbai is in line with APM Terminalsâ global strategy of striving to create value and moving towards an environmentally sustainable future conducive for the communities we operate in,â Peder Sondergaard said.
In 2015 APM Terminals India conducted a feasibility study on the generation of solar power in order to reduce conventional electrical power consumption. The project that ensued to install the panels is being undertaken in three phases.
Solar panels were installed on the terminal workshop and central gate complex rooftop under Phase-I of the project. Since 1 January 2016, the system became operational with a power generation potential of 361,000 kWh (kilowatt hour) units per year.
Upon completion of Phase-II in June 2016, panels installed on the rooftops of STS crane machine houses should generate an additional 220,000 kWh (kilowatt hour) units per year.
Phase- III is currently in the conceptual stage, and will cover a wider surface area, resulting in solar generation of around 15% of the terminalâs total annual power requirement, approximately 5 million kWh (kilowatt hour) units per year.

 This is just one of many green initiatives that APM Terminals Mumbai has put in place over the years. Other examples the installation of LEP (new generation of lights that consume less power and give off better light output) on high lasts, saving approximately 825,000 units of electricity and 765,600 KG of CO2 per annum; rail-mounted gantry crane illumination optimization; LED-powered street lights; and fuel additives to reduce diesel consumption.
