this isn’t entirely my interpretation, though… and there’s different ways he could go. i have a fic in the works where he realizes he’s trans during the interwar period (there were a lot of psychologists studying sex and sexuality at the time. the term ‘transexual’ was coined in germany in 1923) but of course, as he did not have access to medical transition (again, synthetic testosterone didn’t even exist until 3 years after hitler took office) and it would’ve been heavily stigmatized, he’s unable to actually transition until after the war and just lives miserably for the 20 years inbetween.

i also of course like to consider AUs where he’s part of the german underground during the war!! where, instead of fighting or being a propaganda piece (if he didn’t transition until after the war and was perceived as a woman, this likely would’ve been his entire role) he takes real action against the nazis by aiding resistance groups and the allied forces. but this is mostly unrelated to his transness, it’d just be cooler for him to do all that instead of complying. and of course in this context it’s a bit more likely that he would’ve been able to transition during this time since he would be defying his government anyway.
