Updated Matrix 1 + 2 for the 'Communicating With Images' project.
The topic of Culture has been shifted to Thailand for the 'Communicating With Images' project.Â
Matrix 1: Binary Oppositions
'Using the format below construct a matrix that will examine the semiotic nature of images, and the ways that images function to communicate specific messages. According to structuralist thought, the perceptions of oppositions underlie the elementary structure of signification (meaning). In other words, meaning is derived from signs set in opposition. This binary patterning is fundamental to the way in which visual designers rearticulate their experiences of the world in the form of visual communication.
Your matrix should record and illustrate your positive, negative and nuetral perspectives of your chosen topic. Color should be used to denote the positive, negative and nuetral perspectives within your matrix.
The perspectives/lenses that will provide the context of how we view your topic are to be defined by you. You are to chose and implement as many viable lenses as you can from your research and develop a matrix that visually articulates these perspectives. The more viable lenses you develop the better off you will be as this process progresses. So it is in your best interest to push your research and develop as many perspectives as possible.'
Matrix 2: Sign Functions
'Using the format below construct a matrix that will address sign functions. Your images should communicate a referential, emotive and poetic message. This matrix will provide an opportunity to understand, identify, create and manipulate sign systems within specific functional boundaries. Most designers work intuitively, with very little theoretical background for making informed decisions about problem solving. This exercise will bridge theory and practice and focus upon the rational and logical as well as the intuitive.'
For the 'Facial Tissue Packaging (For Children)' project I have decided to distribute the tissue boxes in packs of four. The bottom row is an unfolded illustration of a single box. All boxes in the pack will be the same, with the exception of the top opening. The varying element in the opening is the saying. Each box will be displayed with a different illustration/side shown. Essentially, the bottom row of images is roughly how the pack of four tissue boxes will look on shelves.
The illustration shows a girl in different places doing different activities. In the last panel, the brand Cloud Tissues is shown. As of now, the color is left black and white. The idea is to use the tissue box as a coloring 'book' for kids.Â

The name Cloud Tissues has been chosen for the brand. These are initial concept doodles for the 'Facial Tissue Packaging (For Children)' project. The overall theme will be very whimsical and light, with mostly hand drawn illustrations and bright colors.Â

Facial Tissue Packaging (For Children)
The following is an overview for the initial steps in a project I'll freely title âFacial Tissue Packaging (For Children)â in which I will be documenting and posting the process on this blog.
'Demographics: Children, that allows us to create a story, or stories seen as a book for children, using all the panels. "Children" is meant for ages 3 to 10. Illustrations on the side panels and partially on top, can show subjects such as color Illustrations, cartoons of animals, vehicles, toys, fruits, and so on.
Think of Colors (you can bring in ideas).
The project will be two or three cartons, sold as singles, doubles or triples wrapped together.
You have the option of creating your own âBrandâ Name. Please, do not use the name Kleenex. We may not have the right to use this name for this project and can get into some problems. "Wipies," or another possible name, might be less problematic from the legal point of view.
The cartons that are easy to use and look good when used in sequence, are the square cartons with an oval opening. The opening should be done so, that the tissues will come out undamaged. So far that was achieved on the existing Kleenex cartons. The bottom panel on these cartons can be left blank. It is for the UPC code and legal information. Top opening has to be round or oval, so that the tissues will not tear when being pulled out. The other panels are free for illustrations. Assuming that the tissues are sold as one, two or three cartons wrapped in cellophane together, the side panels can carry story illustrations.'

My excuse for eating A LOT for the next few weeks... narrative book project đđ´ #photography #foodporn (at Tomo Japanese Cafe)
The six worded story for the 'Narrative: Story, Short' project goes as follows:
Flashbacks. Uncontrollable, temperamental rage. Now What?
Key Words:
scared  confused  anxious  hysterical  violent  unsympathetic  merciless  blank  shocked  dazed  memories  nightmare  reality  visions  unwanted  betrayal  broken  emotional  physical  shattered  gone  wasted  lost  unstoppable  madness  hatred  secrets  awaken  inhumane  love  irony  brash  fear  unthinkable  explode  end  selfish Â
Narrative: Story, Short (Project Brief)
The following is a brief for a project titled 'Narrative: Story, Short' in which I will be documenting and posting the process on this blog.
'Stories, at the least, have beginnings, middles and endings. In more sophisticated terms, they have an exposition, character development, conflict, climax or resolution, and a wrap-up or denoumĂŠnt. You are asked to create a story that posseses such a narrative âarcâ. Then. pare the story down to just six (6) words! Very challenging, but it can be done.
Next: write down or sketch the most important moment(s) / Â emotions / descriptors in your story. From a single key word, describe the concept using concrete words and images. For example, the concept of âredâ might be defined concretely with images of Rose, Cherry, Iron Rust, Flamingo. Compose these images and typographics into a linear storyboard or âcomicâ.'

Typography Book
'You will create a 60+ page book incorporating many of your composition assignments and other work from the semester. It will be an archive of the composition process for you to refer to in the future, as well as a learning assignment for structure, flow and layout of a multi-page document.'

Typographer Report
'You will be assigned one historical typographer or typographic company. After researching the typographer, you will prepare a written report about the typographer and focus on something significant about his/her contribution to typography. Your focus could be a specific typeface, historical significance of the person, an interesting anecdote about their life, etc. Using your skills with typography and the grid, you must design a layoutfor your report in a vertical 8.5" x 11" format in 6-8 pages (in 2-page spreads). It should include a headline/ title, author (you), text, call-outs, footnotes, sidebars and any other typographic additions that make it a compelling design. Youmust include some visual support, which could include a sample of the typefacediscussed, photographs, portrait of the subject, historic etchings, projects usingthe fonts described, etc.âwhatever is valid for your subject. Be sure to attributeany sources.'
