The artist that I would like to create a gigposter for is Lana Del Rey.
Anyone who knows me know that I really like; not just her music, but also her as an individual. This song is "Born to Die" it was the very first song that I've heard from her and I was instantly HOOKED by her grotesque yet sublime appearance. Â
I will give a quick overview of her history and as a singer follow by the reason why I picked her in class.Â
I know this was one of the designers you showed us in class, however, I couldn't help get so drawn to his work. The posters he make are simple yet they are very powerful when it comes to symbolizing the concept that needs to be addressed for that specific band. Which is something I personally try my best to strive for.Â
The reason why I picked him is because I realized last semester that I am very weak when it comes to simplicity. I tend to be very detail-oriented which is pretty bad from what people tell me within the program.Â
So I feel emulating Jason would be very beneficial for me since his work really gives off that do less, speak more attitude... If that makes any sense. Â

The idea of originality to me is bringing forth something that is totally new. It could be an idea, a style, or an innovation that has never been done before. In our time, it is honestly really hard to be original. No matter what we do in the creative world, it has most likely been done before at one point in time.Â
Another point about being original is that it is not only about being different - which most people has come to believe. It really takes a creative genius with not just the strong will to be different, but the skill of persuasion to pretty much move a specific crowd of people into believing that whatever new idea and or thing they are doing is unique; at the same time, be attractive and relatable to that crowd of people.
The video talks about how most movies that are out nowadays are pretty basic when it comes to the idea of bring forth something that is new. Like what one of the characters stated, it’s completely derivative. One factor that extremely influences the creativity process in the film industry is financial risk. To put bluntly, original ideas are very risky, while derivative ideas are less risky and have a financial track record. Using sequels, prequels, etc., purely allows studios to estimate revenues more correctly, budget more properly, and generally sleep better at night knowing that things should not go wrong if they follow those premises. So as the budget goes up, the risk goes up and the willingness to output a truly unique product goes down.Â
I have been researching a lot of poster designers, but the one that really drawn me was William. He is a video game poster designer and a lot of his work is very silhouette based. When we were told we shouldnt do people on this poster, I still would like to add an aspect. So possible just a silhouette of kim-jong. :)
As I was doing my research, I found it awfully difficult to find typefaces or fonts developed by North Korean designers.
I know right... Go figure. -_-
Well turns out, there are a handful of typographers that are from a mixture of north and south that has developed some letterings forms. I found them really interesting how some of them went for a modern, more simplistic approach with the line weight of the characters. This is in great contrast to characters of the propaganda poster I found for my last blog.Â
Hopefully I can incorporate this some how into the poster!
As I was searching up "North Korean Travel Posters", I came across some really interesting propaganda posters that they had. I would really to incorporate them into this project. For example, the flat graphics and satirical messages that they have.
I choose the two Chicago and New York posters because since my focal point of my poster will be a skyscraper, I thought it would be in my best interest to look up travel posters of cities that are known for their big buildings. It would give me some what of a reference to how I should structurally design the Ryugyong Hotel. Â
Since North Korea is a very shady and cynical place, the Gotham poster really attracted me. It gives this silhouette feel that adds on to the eerie and mysteriousness of the city. So maybe I should use a limited color palette and simplistic styles to emulate this approach.Â
As for the Belgian poster, I thought maybe if I wanted to go for something that was very simple, this could be it. Taking just a few significant objects that the city has to offer and stylizing it in a way that can be harmonious and in representation of North Korea. This would be hard though... Being too simple sometimes is not my forte. Â
