The Beaver State

“I’ll tell you a short story.

Spain found us first. We didn’t see him a lot, but Papa visited him frequently. We  lived happily for a few years, back around 1777.

England, America and Russia, when they found us, they wanted the land. Papa must have known he couldn’t protect us from three nations, but he was going to try anyway, and he knew Spain wasn’t going to just let them win either.

Often, I would wake up to hear the sounds of Spain, Papa, and the three other nations fighting, and other times Spain and Papa would be gone for days and come back injured. They tried to hide what was happening, but I slowly caught on.

England eventually got us, dragging us away in the middle of the night. Washington tried to plead our way out, and Idaho was scared out of her skin, but they followed. They hadn’t seen anything, they only knew that Papa and Spain were yelling when we were dragged out, and that Papa wasn’t coming with us.

I was the only one to turn around. I was the only one who saw Spain and Papa in the distance, covered in blood. Papa wasn’t moving, and Spain was on his knees next to him, wobbly and his hands covered his face.
