Akuma no Ko

Levi looks down at the titan's deformed massive body and disproportionate limbs, already fading into smoke. He manages to pull his legs free from the steaming carcass, and only then realizes his nakedness — but that's the least of his problems.

With the coordination of a newborn foal, he staggers down from the titan's back, having to lean against the scalding flesh to keep himself from collapsing. He's so dazed that despite hearing the sounds of ODM gear, he can't identify where they're coming from or whether they're allies or enemies.

"Captain, what…?! Where are your clothes?" Sasha's voice is loud and shrill in his ears. "Your eyes are red!"

"Captain, what happened?" Historia's face flickers in and out of focus, then he feels a cloak being draped over his shoulders.

He hears other voices, but can't focus on any of the recruits surrounding him. It is then that a voice, quieter than the rest, makes itself heard:

"Where's Eren?"  Everyone falls silent after Mikasa's question. Levi feels bile rising in his throat and has to swallow the urge to vomit as the realization of what happened to the boy hits him — and how he's going to tell his friends.

“Where do you think you're going?”

It's a little embarrassing not being able to hide her surprise. Considering they have been training together for a while now, Mikasa is well aware of how sneaky Levi can be, but it's not like she expected to run into the idiot violating curfew.

“Why are you out here?” She looks toward the direction he came from — the theoretical studies building, not a very busy area even during the day.

“I asked first.” Levi crosses his arms as he approaches, and looking at him in civilian clothes makes her even more aware that she only threw a coat over her sleepwear, which is still wrinkled from sleep, and that her hair is probably sticking out in every direction.

“I needed some fresh air” she mutters, tightening her coat, not so much from the cold as from embarrassment. “You?”

“Studying in the library.” Levi shrugs, and Mikasa can't tell if there's sarcasm in his voice.

“Sure. Whatever.” She rolls her eyes, already turning her back to the fellow cadet. It doesn't matter why he's out here, as long as he leaves her alone.

“I wonder what kind of fresh air you need if you're heading toward the equipment supply room.” Levi takes a few steps, matching her pace, and Mikasa has to stifle a groan of frustration at his persistence.

“Are you going to tell anyone?” He can't report her to an officer, or he'd be punished for the same transgression, but she also has no interest in their peers knowing about her disheveled state while wandering around after hours.

“Depends on what you're planning.”

Levi is so frustrating, and not just during training. Mikasa doesn't owe him any explanations, and she certainly doesn't want to answer his interrogation when he stares at her with his usual bored expression. But Ackerman also knows how stubborn her colleague can be and, like a true control-freak paranoid, he's particularly annoying when he suspects someone is hiding something. 

Mikasa is too tired and anxious to play this game.

"To fly," she says, quickening her pace to leave him behind.

"Fine, let's go." He shrugs and catches up to her.

"Who invited you?" Mikasa turns, hissing through her teeth to keep her voice down. She left the dorm seeking peace, not more reasons to get worked up.

"If you're going to use the ODM gear alone in the dark, I need to come along to carry you to the infirmary when you hit a tree."

He's obviously trying to get under her skin — since that seems to be his favorite hobby lately — Mikasa has neither the patience nor the time for this, but she can't just let the provocation slide:

"Or finally become top of the class after hiding my corpse."

"Tch. I'm already the best."
