Two war-torn kingdoms were held together by a brittle betrothal. Just as a peaceful future began to glimmer on the horizon, it was shattered in an instant, leaving many to believe all hope was lost.

Some say, once upon a time, peace was more than just a legend in the lands surrounding Paradis. Although, any actual documentation of said peace was lost to over a century of war. Years of destruction meant that not even the most scholared chancellors could say for certain when the wars began. Only that a kingdom across the sea had fallen to corruption from practicing the forbidden arts, and in turn used their power to force any surrounding countries under their command. During their conquest, any materials with knowledge of their magic were swiftly collected, stored away, or outright destroyed. The kingdom originated in the land of Marley, though it now bled into surrounding nations as the ruling Yeager family spread its reach across the countryside. As their borders grew others were forced to be altered, or were erased entirely. Such abuse of power rarely came without a price. Generations of destructive magic led to a near inability to use healing or regenerative spells—what could once save a mortally wounded soldier could now hardly be relied on to remove a splinter. Thus, the whispers of former Yeager kings and queens who were gentle—who used their magic to heal and create instead of to kill and destroy—were seldom believed. Countless family lines had already been snuffed out, and that prospect now threatened the Ackerman clan of Paradis.

Title: Business Trip (second chapter of It’s Only Temporary)
“I’m gonna miss you too, brat.”
That was all he’d needed to say before her head hung in defeat, her stiffness faded, and she fully surrendered to his hold on her. In one fluid motion she turned, wrapped her arms around his neck and buried her face against his shoulder.
“I can manage three weeks,” he heard her mumble hoarsely, “but… Yeah. I’ll miss you.”
Those three weeks had finally come and gone, and Levi was now less than ten minutes from their shared apartment.
Our apartment. Levi still had plenty of mornings where he awoke only to ask himself if he was dreaming; the sight of Mikasa curled around him was simply too good to be true.

“Oh, no.”
Levi froze, the sheer dread in Mikasa’s tone catching him off guard. “What’s wrong?”
“You didn’t see that?” She asked, pointing to the mouth of the cave, “I think it’s going to—”
A powerful boom from above them not only cut her off, but also shook the cave enough for water to drip down on them from the ceiling. The light drizzle that had plagued them all morning had erupted into a full-fledged storm, flooding the already over-saturated forest floor and snapping tree branches with its intensity.
“...Start storming again.”
“Great.” Levi sighed, “no chance in Hell we’re getting rescued today.”

“Are you afraid of me, Princess?”
“No,” she said, smiling softly as she added, “I was able to best you at only ten years old, after all.”
Levi made a sound that could have been taken as a laugh, though Mikasa wasn’t sure she’d ever seen him do so.
“But… I was afraid that you’d be angry with me.”
“Why would I be angry with you?” “You’ve always been angry with me.” She said dryly, but her expression softened as she looked away. “You were punished because of me. How could you not be angry?”

The majority of the portraits on their walls focused on their daughter, with a handful of them featuring Levi and herself. She managed to snap a few solo pictures of Levi when his guard was down, though most of those portraits were placed in more discrete locations, per his request.
Mikasa eagerly opened the envelope concealing the newest set of photos, many of which she expected to display moments from their daughter’s first birthday. Mikasa had been fighting tears for half the day, leaving Levi to take most of the photos. He didn’t seem to find the task as enjoyable as she did, but he knew what capturing these memories meant to her.

Even now Levi still shook his head at himself, at the both of them. When he found her throwing a fit in her car that first night, his only intention had been to offer aid—if she’d even be willing to accept it from him. A small part of him had felt guilty for giving her a hard time about the promotion, especially after learning about the unrelated, but probably equally as frustrating, events that plagued her throughout the rest of the day. The least he could do was give her a ride.
But then the brat floored him with the news that she’d been living out of her car for the last month—which he would later learn was actually closer to two months, but not until well into their time living together.
As he’d paced beside her car, the little things he’d noticed over the last few weeks began to add up; her sudden reduced variety in clothing, the stiffness in her gate, and the fact that she stopped bringing homemade lunches, instead switching to cheap fast-food from around their workplace…
Of course, he was too fixated on the situation at hand to ask himself why he’d been looking her way enough to notice any of that to begin with.
