little boots has a career that can be aptly described as “the one that got away.” i’m not quite sure where it all went wrong after a brilliant debut and buzzworthy singles. perhaps a consequence of her originally avant garde musical sound, her self-released sophomore album is full of missed opportunities and been-there, done-that hooks that were novel in 2009 but don’t quite hold up in today’s saturated indie retrohouse landscape. still, there are gems to be found: her intro track, “motorway,” is ethereal dreampop at its finest.
