differences
Having differences in values, beliefs, customs, traditions, with family is ok. It doesnât ruin my relationship with them, nor will it change it. I will always love them no matter what, and they will always love me.Â
Kafka on the Shore
The strangest book Iâve read in a while. Maybe Iâm not quite understanding the meaning of it. A common theme in the book seems to be about souls, and if itâs possible to lose part of your soul but continue to live. Iâm not a fan of the graphic sex scenes (with a 15 YEAR OLD), or of the unsolved and unexplained mysteries. Johnnie Walker and his flute of souls? The entrance stone? The blob that comes out of Nakataâs mouth when he dies???? I would rate this book a 2/5.
Iâm much more capable than you think.

Confronting mortality
âThe only way to be comfortable with death is to understand and see yourself as something bigger than yourself; to choose values that stretch beyond serving yourself, that are simple and immediate and controllable and tolerant of the chaotic world around you. This is the basic root of all happiness.â
Excerpt From: Mark Manson. âThe Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck.â iBooks.
Paradox of Choice
âBut more is not always better. In fact, the opposite is true. We are actually often happier with less. When weâre overloaded with opportunities and options, we suffer from what psychologists refer to as the paradox of choice. Basically, the more options weâre given, the less satisfied we become with whatever we choose, because weâre aware of all the other options weâre potentially forfeiting. So if you have a choice between two places to live and pick one, youâll likely feel confident and comfortable that you made the right choice. Youâll be satisfied with your decision. But if you have a choice among twenty-eight places to live and pick one, the paradox of choice says that youâll likely spend years agonizing, doubting, and second-guessing yourself, wondering if you really made the ârightâ choice, and if youâre truly maximizing your own happiness. And this anxiety, this desire for certainty and perfection and success, will make you unhappy.â
âCommitment gives you freedom because youâre no longer distracted by the unimportant and frivolous. Commitment gives you freedom because it hones your attention and focus, directing them toward what is most efficient at making you healthy and happy. Commitment makes decision-making easier and removes any fear of missing out; knowing that what you already have is good enough, why would you ever stress about chasing more, more, more again? Commitment allows you to focus intently on a few highly important goals and achieve a greater degree of success than you otherwise would. In this way, the rejection of alternatives liberates usârejection of what does not align with our most important values, with our chosen metrics, rejection of the constant pursuit of breadth without depth. Yes, breadth of experience is likely necessary and desirable when youâre youngâafter all, you have to go out there and discover what seems worth investing yourself in. But depth is where the gold is buried. And you have to stay committed to something and go deep to dig it up. Thatâs true in relationships, in a career, in building a great lifestyleâin everything. Excerpt From: Mark Manson. âThe Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck.â iBooks.
Problems; fighting
âPeople canât solve your problems for you. And they shouldnât try, because that wonât make you happy. You canât solve other peopleâs problems for them either, because that likewise wonât make them happy. The mark of an unhealthy relationship is two people who try to solve each otherâs problems in order to feel good about themselves. Rather, a healthy relationship is when two people solve their own problems in order to feel good about each other.â âFor a relationship to be healthy, both people must be willing and able to both say no and hear no. Without that negation, without that occasional rejection, boundaries break down and one personâs problems and values come to dominate the otherâs. Conflict is not only normal, then; itâs absolutely necessary for the maintenance of a healthy relationship. If two people who are close are not able to hash out their differences openly and vocally, then the relationship is based on manipulation and misrepresentation, and it will slowly become toxic.âExcerpt From: Mark Manson. âThe Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck.â iBooks.Â

Hope
So for all the young people in this room and those who are watching, know that this country belongs to you â to all of you, from every background and walk of life. If you or your parents are immigrants, know that you are part of a proud American tradition â the infusion of new cultures, talents and ideas, generation after generation, that has made us the greatest country on earth.
If your family doesnât have much money, I want you to remember that in this country, plenty of folks, including me and my husband â we started out with very little. But with a lot of hard work and a good education, anything is possible â even becoming President. Thatâs what the American Dream is all about. (Applause.)
If you are a person of faith, know that religious diversity is a great American tradition, too. In fact, thatâs why people first came to this country â to worship freely. And whether you are Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Sikh â these religions are teaching our young people about justice, and compassion, and honesty. So I want our young people to continue to learn and practice those values with pride. You see, our glorious diversity â our diversities of faiths and colors and creeds â that is not a threat to who we are, it makes us who we are. (Applause.) So the young people here and the young people out there: Do not ever let anyone make you feel like you donât matter, or like you donât have a place in our American story â because you do. And you have a right to be exactly who you are. But I also want to be very clear: This right isnât just handed to you. No, this right has to be earned every single day. You cannot take your freedoms for granted. Just like generations who have come before you, you have to do your part to preserve and protect those freedoms. And that starts right now, when youâre young.
Right now, you need to be preparing yourself to add your voice to our national conversation. You need to prepare yourself to be informed and engaged as a citizen, to serve and to lead, to stand up for our proud American values and to honor them in your daily lives. And that means getting the best education possible so you can think critically, so you can express yourself clearly, so you can get a good job and support yourself and your family, so you can be a positive force in your communities.
And when you encounter obstacles â because I guarantee you, you will, and many of you already have â when you are struggling and you start thinking about giving up, I want you to remember something that my husband and I have talked about since we first started this journey nearly a decade ago, something that has carried us through every moment in this White House and every moment of our lives, and that is the power of hope â the belief that something better is always possible if youâre willing to work for it and fight for it.
It is our fundamental belief in the power of hope that has allowed us to rise above the voices of doubt and division, of anger and fear that we have faced in our own lives and in the life of this country. Our hope that if we work hard enough and believe in ourselves, then we can be whatever we dream, regardless of the limitations that others may place on us. The hope that when people see us for who we truly are, maybe, just maybe they, too, will be inspired to rise to their best possible selves. -Michelle Obama Final Remarks as First Lady

Values
âBetter values, are process oriented..the value is an ongoing lifelong process that defies completion. ..If your metric of the value of âsuccess by worldly standardsâ is âbuy a house and a nice carâ, you spend twenty years working your ass off to achieve it, once itâs achieved the metric has nothing left to give you. Then say hello to your midlife crisis, because the problem that drove you your entire adult life was just taken away from you. There are no other opportunities to keep growing and improving, and yet itâs that growth that generates happiness, not a long list of arbitrary achievementsâ. Excerpt From: Mark Manson. âThe Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck.â iBooks.

âWe should pick our battles carefully, while simultaneously attempting to empathize a bit with the so-called enemy. We should approach the news and media with a healthy dose of skepticism and avoid painting those who disagree with us with a broad brush. We should prioritize values of being honest, fostering transparency, and welcoming doubt over the values of being right, feeling good, and getting revenge. These âdemocraticâ values are harder to maintain amidst the constant noise of a networked world.â
take away: donât let judgment and bias cloud your views. Approach things with an open mind. Itâs not always important to be ârightâ. Certainty is the enemy of growth. Instead of striving for certainty, we should be in constant search of doubt: doubt about our own beliefs, doubt about our own feelings, doubt about what the future may hold for us unless we get out there and create it for ourselves. Instead of looking to be right all the time, we should be looking for how weâre wrong all the time. Because we are.
