One of my favorite assignments on #moana was animating this run of shots. This was a challenging scene! Fortunately, we had great consultation for the traditional dancers. The dancing boy was inspired by footage of a mischievous Polynesian dancer encountered during the filmmakersā research trip. This is the closest we came to a romantic subplot in the film.

I was at Disneyland yesterday and when I walked into the Princess Fantasy Faire I welled up with tears as I witnessed a magical moment with the newest princess Elena of Avalor speaking in full Spanish to a small princess visiting from Latin America.
Representation matters.

I guess I shouldāve translated for the non-Spanish speakers. Elena: āYour shoes are so sparkly! You know my grandmother always says a princess needs something sparkly so everyone knows that you are a princess and look; you have your crown, your dress and your shoes. Everything is so beautiful!ā

In many Polynesian cultures the HongiĀ (or Honi) is a traditional greeting that involves pressing foreheads/noses and inhaling at the same time. This symbolisesĀ ha, or the breath of life, being exchanged between both parties. It is sometimes followed by a kiss on the cheek or a hug followed by exhaling.
I want to say that the first time someone did the ha with me, I felt like a door opened up into a universe very big and very small, which I guess is what it is to feel the past rushing up to meet you.
Another tid bit.. the hongi is also known as the meeting between two house of knowledge

A quick FYI for non pacific islanders for Moana
Even though you only know Hawaiians doesnāt mean sheās just Hawaiian, and yes, there are more islanders than just Hawaiians.
Her name isnāt Mo-wah-nuh, its Mo-AH-NAH. Honestly donāt even get me started on this one.
Ā Polynesian isnāt a language. Polynesia is a large group of islands that have their own distinct language, rich culture, and customs. Thereās Samoa, Tonga, New Zealand, Tahiti, Hawaii, Easter Islands, etcā¦
Ā Moana isnāt one race sheās everything mixed into one because there are too many cultures to just base her off of just one island.
Maui, as you might have guessed isnāt based off of just one legend either.
MauiāsĀ āWar Danceā is called the Haka and they do that dance to scare their enemies before battle.
Fun fact: Moana means Ocean
Please donāt group all of the Pacific Islanders and their cultures into one.
Another Fun fact: Pacific Islanders are some of the best navigators of the Ocean to have ever lived. There has even been evidence of them being the first to travel to America. sorry not sorry Columbus.

In old HawaiŹ»i, catching the niuhi was the game of the chiefs. Which turned into a dangerous sport for which special techniques were developed. Eating niuhi flesh was tapu (forbidden) to women.Ā This is what my ancestors did, and Iām proud of it.Ā
