Everybody wanna be a kanaka but nobody wanna be a kanaka.
American Flags Taken Down By Hawaiian Kingdom Advocates at UH
So basically you want Hawaii to be a little America. Because I thinking about this economically and I really don't think it's s good i sea for Hawaii to declare sovereignty. Like I'm really sorry for what happened to the Hawaiian people but I don't think you could obtain so much money just off of tourism.
Do I want Hawaiʻi to be a Little America? Nah. We already have one messed up regular sized ‘America’. Your opinion is acknowledged and respected but I have to disagree. I’ll be more than happy to provide an in depth explanation if you request one. Also, please try to understand that Hawai’i doesn’t have to claim sovereignty. Hawaiʻi's had sovereignty since 1843. We don't need to claim sovereignty because our ancestors secured our sovereignty back in the early 19'Th century. Pretty cool huh? If you want to look into this topic more I strongly recommend checking out hawaiiankingdom.org and hawaiiankingdom.org/blog with an unbiased mindset of course.
Movement for Aloha no ka ʻĀina (MANA) is a movement-building organization, established to achieve independence from the United States and social justice in Hawai’i. Hawai’i has been under US occupation for over 120 years, an occupation that is illegal both under international law and US domestic law, a fact that the United States has yet to refute. We follow in the history of Aloha ‘Āina in Hawaiʻi, and in the tradition of peoples throughout the world who struggle for liberation, freedom, and justice. Under US occupation, our people and land have suffered what some might consider a more “tender” violence than what we are currently witnessing in Gaza where the the most explicit of US-backed state violence is being wielded upon Palestinian families. Nonetheless, for the same reasons, for the economic exploitation of our land, the US has systematically repressed our Independence, oppressed Kanaka Maoli, tried to erase us from our land and from our culture and has and continues to drive us and our stories off our lands for housing developments, military expansion, and other corporate interests. To rub salt into the wound, the US military uses our lands to prepare armies around the world to do to other people, what they have essentially done to us. It is both dehumanizing and humiliating to not have control of our own country, to not be able to determine whether our sacred ʻāina will produce food or whether she will be forced into the production of US wars. We are both outraged and strengthened as we witness the Palestiniansʻ own commitment to struggle to maintain their ancestral connections to land and we are committed to continue to struggle in Hawai’i to liberate our ourselves and our lands toward the liberation of all victims of US empire.

I'm kinda confused: how can you claim sovereignty when you aren't even a majority of the population? ...when you aren't even the 1st or 2nd largest ethnicity? When 90% of the pop. is not hawaiian alone? Yes, I know the history of annexation. It doesn't change the fact that Hawaii is much different today. You can't just ignore everyone else who lives there--as if their rights don't matter. Two wrongs don't make a right.
1. I am not claiming sovereignty, and I never will.2. Hawaiian is a nationality, just like how American is a nationality. Do you have to be of a certain blood to be an American? The same thing applies for being Hawaiian. 3. If you really did know the "history of annexation" you wouldn't be confused right now.4. I don't believe I've ever said anything about ignoring people. I believe I mentioned before; Hawaiʻi is home to Kanaka and Non-Kanaka.5. Are you saying my people should ignore our own rights just to make other people comfortable? Kanaka and Non-Kanaka are all victims in this situation. None of us are to blame for this dilemma. 6. You are correct! Two wrongs don't make a right! That's why us Hawaiians are trying to correct the initial wrong.

I am from and born in Hawaii but I am not Kanaka Maoli. I was wondering what your thoughts are on people getting tattoos of the islands of Hawaii? Do you think it's inappropriate or appropriate (not of "tribal" or pacific island derived tattoo's but of the actual islands)?
Honestly (and this is just my opinion-I don't speak for all Kanaka and all Hawaiians) I don't see anything wrong with it especially if you're from Hawaiʻi. I've seen many tourists who just get tattoos of our islands just for the hell of it, to me, you reppin' our home seems like a more valid reason. Hawaiʻi is home to all of us, Kanaka and non-kanaka.

Many people use the terms Hawaiian and Kanaka Maoli incorrectly. They are NOT interchangeable.
Hawaiian - A nationality/citizenship. A Hawaiian is someone (of any ethnicity or race) whose loyalty and allegiance is to Hawaiʻi and the Hawaiian Kingdom. Kanaka/Kanaka Maoli - An ethnicity/race A Kanaka Maoli is a descendant of the Polynesian navigators that settled the Hawaiian Islands.
