He stood up, and I fell backward, too weak to rise, too frightened to say any more. I looked into his face and saw a man squeezed tight in the crushing embrace of indecision, caught between two unacceptable courses.

“I don’t know enough. God forgive me, I don’t know enough!”

He seemed so large standing over me, a colossus, one of the Nephilim, the race of giants who bestrode the world when the world was young. His eyes darted about the room, as if he were looking for an answer to his impossible dilemma, as if somewhere in the kitchen would be the sign that would show him the way.

Then the monstrumologist became very still. His restless eyes came to rest upon my upturned face.

“No,” he said softly. “Not God.”

He stepped away quickly, and before I could crane my neck around to see where he had gone, he returned, carrying the butcher knife.

Though we're quite some ways away from the reveal, I wanted to share an exciting new development we're trying out this year!

In the leadup to the event, I invite folks to share previews of what you've been working on. You can submit previews to me anytime between now up until October 23.

As mentioned in the summons, this is an optional element. If you produce your best work under pressure, that is totally fine. Just keep an open line of communication should anything happen and you need more time.

Guidelines for sharing previews:

Please do not post a preview from your own account. This is to help maintain an element of surprise until the reveals. Instead, DM me or send me an ask with what you want to share

Previews will be posted on a rolling basis in the order I receive them in. Depending on how many folks submit a preview, I may limit it to one per person just so I'm able to stagger them out between weeks leading up to the event.

I leave it to your discretion what you wish to share in a preview. It can be a snippet of writing, some zoomed in detail on a piece of art, or even your thoughts on the process so far! Do keep in mind though if there's a very specific element in your prompt, it may give the game away if your previews includes that element.

If sharing any images, consider including an image ID. I will add any that are submitted to the image itself when it comes time to post. I'm more than happy to help folks workshop image IDs. I've also included a resource here on writing image IDs for folks who want to try writing them on their own.

Had the absolute pleasure of reading @antropophagi's i will hold on hope and it was everything I never knew I needed from a fix-it fic.

It's a very beautiful exploration of Warthrop and William's relationship. Without Harrington Lane, without monstrumology, what would happen if the two of them had nothing to hide behind - what if all they had left to confront was the other? In reading this, I felt a sense of finality that I never felt in any of my times reading The Final Descent.

Maybe I'll drop more lore eventually but Maddox is a part of the society, he's about 25-27. Lives in the British countryside but is called up for his services a lot by the society. However he's actually on very strict house arrest (for having killed a couple ppl but deemed unsuitable to be in prison) so whenever he does go out and travels to the US for conventions or whatever he's accompanied by Cecil! Cecil is in his 30s, he's an officer for Scotland Yard (quite respected at that), and he knows very little about the society or anything related to Monstrumology. However he does learn over the course of his time spent there with Maddox, and eventually is seen as a very trusted confidant and representative of the society to the US and British government. Also may or may not be related by blood to Kearns in some mysterious way.
