i'm not going to say ao3 is a bad website by design; its format is simple, the website is easy to use for both writers and readers, and the actual system used to mark works with tags, fandoms, characters, etc is thorough. but ao3, at the end of the day, is a fanfiction website (still in beta) that doesn't even have 2 million active users. there's nearly a donation box nearly every few months asking for near $200k every single time.
and here's the thing, after every single time they ask for donations, there's literally no changes done to the site. the only major change i've seen within that time is a feature to exclude tags. and in the same vein, what else CAN you add to a fanfic site? the website has been active since 2009, but it's still in beta. you cannot sign up for ao3 without requesting an invite first.
all it takes is for them to post a donation box at the top of the website and they make their goal every single time. they can easily make 500k with that box. they even ADMIT to having so much extra donation money that they're storing it for a 'rainy day', as opposed to using that money now. instead, they ask for more donations.
like of COURSE a website costs money to run, no one's saying it doesn't, but y'all use that as an excuse to blindly donate to them without asking where is the money going, why is that much money needed, and why hasn't there been any real improvements for the website despite receiving near $500k or more a year.
