I think Cobyn and Vega compliment each other well. I see Vega as someone who struggles to enjoy things they aren't receiving external validation for doing. They dropped cosmology in favor of investigating, and the specific reason they highlight for their doing so is because of the amount of attention they got from it. Her feeling like someone to be praised and prioritized by other people is so important to her that the moment something gave her that feeling, she decided that thing was her life's very purpose. He probably still has a genuine passion for cosmology, but now that he's found something that's been proven to make him important in others' eyes, he automatically feels more fulfilled by that thing. Damn his actual passions to hell, that didn't get him any attention..........
Cobyn is the polar opposite of this. He says he feels ignored whenever he talks about gardening because people rarely listen, and he says no one cares about gardening these days or something along those lines while explaining how his shop wasn't doing well. He still dedicates himself to gardening. He doesn't need external validation to be motivated to do it, it's just something that makes him happy and that's that. Obviously it sucks he has no one to express his love of gardening to, and he needs business to come into his store so he could keep it open, but none of that manifests as insecurity(?) like it does with Vega. It moreso manifests as him being extra appreciative of people who do listen to and support him, but not really holding it against himself or anyone else if they don't.
Vega and Cobyn are both in the dilemma of no one caring about their passion, but Vega takes it WAY harder than Cobyn. To the point where she changes what she does with her life because attention is more important to her than passion. Where Vega needs validation to be satisfied with what they do, Cobyn just greatly appreciates it.
I also really like Vegabyn, if that's what it's called. Vega x Cobyn. I saw someone call it cosmic herbs once I think, I don't know.
Point is, I love that ship soso much. Vega is ranting to Eddie or someone about how Cobyn has 2 trillion tricks up his sleeve in an effort to Get Her. Cobyn talks to Eddie later on about Vega also but it's just about how he really likes them, and that he's thinking of getting them this specific bouquet of flowers because it reminds him of Vega due to symbolism or appearance or something. It's so peak to me idk.
Cobyn x Coworker doesn't make a lick of sense I am so in denial about this. Coworker would HATE this guy. Cobyn's taller than him, stronger than him, and cares about gay shit like flowers and mental health. Coworker considers just standing next to this guy a humiliation ritual.
And Cobyn doesn't even brag about any of it. They'll acknowledge it if it's relevant to the topic, but their lack of ego tripping makes it so much worse for Coworker. If Cobyn bragged about it that's at least proof they care as much as he does, but they don't! Cobyn's completely effortless in being more masculine than him. It's a one-sided competition and he's STILL losing.
Coworker would play it off as if he doesn't care, and Cobyn would believe him. He'd say something about how it's good it doesn't eat him up because it's hardly a measure of a person's worth, and that Coworker should just nurture his own strengths without worrying about how others might be better than him in some regards, and Coworker would want this guy even deader over it than he did before.
Cobyn would probably also ragebait Coworker somewhat, but mostly if he's contributing to someone else's ragebait. He'd do it on his own occasionally, but that's kind of what I think he does to Vega with Poppy a little bit, so uh. Same deal there. It's his love language.
Actually, I think some of what Cobyn says is him being genuinely oblivious and some is him ragebaiting, and no one knows when he's doing what.
Cobyn genuinely just doesn't think anything they do matters all that much to other people. He talks a lot about how people forget the things he tells them, to the point where he's surprised when people remember what he says even if he JUST said it. They feel like they're discarded and pushed aside by most people, which results in them being incredibly loyal to the people who don't make them feel like that. He'll justify and lie (to himself) about their horrible actions*, he'll be an accessory to the crimes they commit, and he won't view any of it as him having a true impact because no one really cared for what he did up to this point, anyway. The way he sees it, he's having a positive impact on the people he values while having no impact on anything else, because it's not like he was directly involved in those deaths. If people didn't particularly care about his gardening then, why would they suddenly start just because he switched what resources he's using? That's why they believe they're not guilty of anything. They view their crime in relation to gardening, and because no one cared about their gardening, they thought the crime would also be overlooked.
*Either Cobyn's lying to himself about his friend and his friend's friends being murderers, or he idolizes his friend so much he genuinely has a hard time believing he or anyone he associates with would do something like this, even if he knows it's the most likely case scenario. I actually agree with this more, but I'm not thinking about it rn

I just saw Vega's backstory and yeah I think vegatag might be peak. They both have a really strong need to be taken seriously, and they both try to seek that out in their job prospects. Protag through ditching a job he genuinely loved to become a vague office worker, and Vega through ditching cosmology for something she thought would give her more respect based on how people prioritized her when she was a witness to crime.
Vega wants to be taken seriously because they have high beliefs in their ability to uncover truths most other people can't. She knows how to expose shady people and organizations to give the public the knowledge they deserve, but knowing how to do that won't get her very far if everyone keeps dismissing her as paranoid. He still relishes in the attention he got from being a crime's sole witness because it was most likely the only time he was ever listened to on such a massive scale, and it made him feel useful and fulfilled enough to believe it's his purpose despite his lack of success ever since. This also influences their strategy early on in the game. They automatically appoint themself as their group's leader because if they aren't either the center of attention or in control, they aren't going to be heard.
Protag wants to be taken seriously because he won't feel secure or accepted otherwise. He had an upbringing in which he wasn't allowed to be who he was without maltreatment from his parents being a direct consequence, but he attempted to overcome that by exploring his own interests anyway and even basing his career off them. He eventually cracked under the pressure of (perceived?) judgement though, and went back to a mindset of having to be and do certain things for the sake of being accepted, just like he had to back when he was living with his parents.
Basically, Protag seeks respect by minimizing who he is and what he wants until he's accepted as part of the group. Vega seeks it by getting louder and more persistent until you finally acknowledge how important he and his discoveries are. Is this coherent.
im tired of justifying my ships to myself in my head go my scarab
honestly just taking my 2 favorites from my top 2 sig games and making them kiss. I don't think they'd get along in the first place though. John Machoism is not going to appreciate Cobyn "Buddy, it's okay, you can open up" Jackpot Crash Course. Cobyn and Colleague is probably more likely but I'm not going to say anything logical or conclusive about Cobyn until I replay at least one of the routes 2 more times, or at least pick at what I've already seen for a little while longer. I also still DON'T KNOW HOW TO DEAL WITH COLLEAGUE IN TERMS OF CHARACTERIZATION.
I guess I TECHNICALLY know how, I'm just never gonna be able to word it in a way that I'm fully satisfied with. It's something that could only ever exist in execution, but it takes me 3-5 business years to write anything.
dude i love cobyn so much my heart is beating so fast and it hurts and i cant even like. play the game a second or third time like i usually would to pick up on tinier details because im too lightheaded or something. ill go to bed and do that tomorrow i guess 😭😭
incredibly mild JCC spoilers
finally got around to finishing the first chapter. what the FUCK 😭😭😭😭😭
at least cobyn is okay............... as long as cobyn is okay im okay. i feel a sense of Impending Doom about that but that's okay because i can Ignore It.
Protag i think

Another detail I think supports the whole "Coworker isn't real/alive" thing is how the elevator just completely ignores all his deaths. Out of the three total times Coworker died, the elevator completely ignored it and only reset once Protag got to a point where he could no longer progress. Him getting shot wasn't enough to trigger an ending, but Protag getting shot was. Him getting stabbed to death wasn't enough to trigger an ending, but Protag being caught in the act was. I have to imagine him getting burnt alive wouldn't have been enough either if it didn't also happen to Protag simultaneously.
Maybe it's because Coworker dying isn't considered a "real death," so whatever causes everything to reset wasn't triggered. He wasn't even alive to begin with, which means no one died, which means there's no reason for a do over. Protag has something that makes him a valid living thing that Coworker doesn't, or Coworker has something that makes him *not* a valid living thing that Protag doesn't. Or a mix of both.
Or the elevator is just sentient and hates Coworker specifically.
I like cocest where Coworker only interacts with Colleague out of pure selfishness and nothing else. He doesn't like Colleague at all because he still sees him as a worse version of himself and a threat to his reputation, but at the same time, they ARE the same person. Colleague already knows everything about Coworker, so he'd suffer no real consequence for talking at Colleague about all his problems. Coworker treats Colleague like a void to yell in, and the latter just lets him because he's barely paying attention anyway. He's usually on some random side quest when Coworker gets ahold of him to vent or rant about something, but when his attention is undivided, he'll usually give advice. This advice is always unintentionally awful, but Coworker always glazes it and follows it to a T because Great Minds and all that.
At a certain point, Coworker is going to do this so often that he starts seeing Colleague as an extension of himself. He could bare the deepest parts of his soul to this guy and just get a thumbs up in return, or advice he likely would've come up with himself had he just thought on it a little longer. Colleague's responses being so relatable and accepting of Coworker's issues in a way he doesn't expect from anyone else makes all this feel like talking to himself with extra steps, so he starts treating it that way. He starts admiring and bragging about Colleague in the same way he admires and brags about himself. He's the sun praising the moon's shine simply because it's his own light being reflected i think
This comes with Coworker fussing over Colleague just as much as he fusses over himself though. He'll freak out if he sees anything wrong with Colleague's appearance, or if he does anything even slightly awkward, etc. He usually expresses that by encouraging Colleague or taking over certain tasks for him instead of being blatantly judgmental, but it's still selfish and overbearing at the end of the day. He'd rather die than let this man exist naturally, just like he'd rather die than let himself exist naturally.
I forgot about this last part: Colleague starts off not liking Coworker either. He's jealous of his material possessions and kind of embarrassed by his behavior, but the most he does about it is be kind of dismissive. Most of the things Colleague does in this post-elevator hypothetical he does simply because he can, and that includes his early interactions with Coworker. His attitude also shifts at a certain point though, and the jealousy and embarrassment is more lighthearted now. He likes the attention and admiration he gets from Coworker even if he's well aware it's coming from a place of selfishness.
every time i see this guy he's a different color
tw for gaslighting/manipulation i think
The Company is like the SCP foundation in the sense that some employees just aren't allowed to leave. A lot of them do have access to the outside world, but all the others are just Doomed.
What category each employee falls under depends on how they do during the interview. If they do bad enough for Normal Guy to rip their face off, they aren't allowed to leave, they're company property now/don't even have the free will required to do anything other than work. If they do well enough to be handed a key without NG crashing out, they do reserve the right to leave the building, but they're most likely gonna be paid so little they'll be doing bucketloads of overtime anyway. Like Protag.
Coworker was created artificially without having a traditional interview, so he's kind of a weird case. He's basically been conditioned since day one into thinking the world outside isn't really worth it. They told him there's not much out there for him, that the company already supplies him with everything he could possibly need, it's a sign of disrespect, and a lot of other terrible things that'd demotivate his leaving. A lot of those terrible things also involve feeding and/or hurting his pride and phrasing this system like it's rewarding him.
There's technically no rule against leaving for him, though. He has no desire to leave because this is all he knows and all that is worth knowing as far as he's aware, but if that were to change at any point in time for any reason, the consequences wouldn't be all that dire. He'd get a slap on the wrist or something, but they'd ultimately move on quicker than if anyone else did it, because Coworker is still a slightly better tool than any other employee in The Company.
At some point, Protag would want to take advantage of that and bring Coworker on a tour throughout some parts of the city. His opinion on Coworker is mostly irrelevant when he decides to do this because after the elevator (more specifically, him having to trick the doppels) he's like Benny JCC in the sense that the denial of freedom is the worst thing ever to him. Maybe this is his way of adhering to his newfound values, or trying to repent, or both. Coworker is either being an asshole or jumping at his own shadow throughout the entire tour, but that's alright.

graceee......
GRACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
sig au where Coworker is Colleague's guardian angel, but he only shows up during near death experiences. Colleague catches onto this and gets himself into increasingly dangerous situations for the sole purpose of trying to romance his guardian angel, but he's really bad at it, so he often ends up doing stuff like fumbling with a stack of cards containing cheesy pickup lines while falling from a massive skyscraper. This may or may not actually be working on Coworker, but either way, he REALLY wants this guy to quit risking his life just to do a bad job at flirting with him. He probably threatened to have Colleague sent to hell for harassment.
