AFTER HOURS, LIVE ACTION, 3D BACKGROUND, 2D ANIMATION
Sequence of how I animated my elevator scene. I started with live action, then created the background in Cinema 4d so I could move a camera around a 3d space without having to draw each frame individually. I then animated myself in Photoshop using my live action video reference material and layered it above the 3d background.

AFTER HOURS, CINEMA 4D LOCATION
This is a segment of the Grove building I recreated in Cinema 4D by modelling the walls, floor and ceiling, and then pasting 2d art I painted in Photoshop. I found this method quite practical as I was able to reuse the location for multiple shots and not have to paint 2d backgrounds from different angles for each scene. I just changed the perspective of the virtual camera and placed my 2d animation on top of the scene.

This scene was created entirely in Photoshop using reference material I filmed.
AFTER HOURS, ELEVATOR SCENE
This scene was created by making a 3d background in After Effects and placing the 2d animation of myself on top of it. I filmed this scene prior to animating it to make sure I for the perspective right and I then used that reference material as a guide to animate the scene.
AFTER HOURS, INVESTIGATING
This scene was created both in Photoshop and Cinema 4d. I made the background by drawing 2d art assets in Photoshop using photo references. I then built a 3d model of a segment of the Grove building and pasted the 2d image assets to the walls of the 3d model. I then used a virtual camera to pan through the scene. I then added the 2d animation of myself walking on top of the 3d background.

AFTER HOURS (Unfinished scene)
This is the scene of me being asked to leave the building by security. It was the last scene I was working on before my computer stopped working. I created this entire scene in Photoshop using photo and video references.Â

For this scene, I used reference footage of myself working in class and looped the animation. I animated myself in Photoshop and did all the camera work in After Effects.

AFTER HOURS, ESTABLISHING SHOT 3
I created this scene using the same methods used in my first two establishing shots.Â
The chair, table, wall on the left and doorway wall are on separate planes. I used After Effects to zoom in creating a sense of 3d space.
AFTER HOURS, ESTABLISHING SHOT 2
This scene was created using the exact same technique as the first establishing shot. I layered my 2d art and used After Effects to create a sense of 3d by zooming in the virtual camera.
I added a faded black vignette as a border to create a sense of dread, rain effects again were created in After Effects using filters.

I created this opening shot by re drawing a reference photo I took of the grove building, painting it digitally and placing the foreground, mid ground and background on different layers.Â
When I zoom in the camera using After Effects, having my layers spaced out at specific distances creates a sense of 3d. Its all 2d of course, just some camera trickery.Â
The tree was animated in Photoshop and placed in the background as a quicktime animation.
 I also added foreground and mid ground fog panning from right to left at different speeds. Rain effects were created using After Effects filters.
AFTER HOURS MOOD BOARD
This isn’t so much a “mood board” as it is list of films, animations and tv shows that have inspired me to make After Hours.
I Lost My Body was a constant inspiration from an aesthetic perspective.I wanted to mimic its art style but also make it my own.
For my monster, I took inspiration from 80s vampire film The Lost Boys. I liked the idea of the creature having human features and not being a grotesque looking monster.
Halloween, The Shinning and Hereditary inspired my establishing shots, camera angles and shots. Using these as reference helped set the tone of a horror film.
Stranger Things and Donnie Darko are both period pieces set in the 80s. Because the 80s is when I grew up and and watched a lot of the aforementioned horror films like The Lost Boys etc, I decided to pace and shoot my film like an 80s movie. This is most noticeable with my production bible which has been made to look like an 80s VHS tape.
I feel that although Iv’e taken a few ques from films and animations which i consider to be a great inspiration for my work, I don’t believe iv’e copied or plagiarised in anyway. I feel iv’e managed to take inspiration and make something entirely new from it.
AFTER HOURS PRODUCTION BIBLE STORYBOARD
Upon coming up with the idea to make a horror film set within Middlesex University and writing a rough outline of the story, I spent a day taking reference photos of the Grove building so I could plan out my shots. I then started story boarding which was a relatively easy task since I felt I had all the reference material and narrative already prepared.
The story
I’m working late at uni and im the last student in the Grove building, this is demonstrated with some slow zoom establishing shots showing the building is vacant of people.
i’m working on my animation and im told to leave by a security guard. A close up shot shows me picking my digital pen up from the desk and placing it in my coat pocket. This scene foreshadows a later scene.
I leave class and try to leave the building but the main glass door is locked. I then go looking for the security guard and find him being eaten alive by some creature inside the elevator.
I run back to seek refuge in the same class I was working in earlier, but I drop my access card whilst running. I ran to my card, grab it, and then run back to class, but just before i enter, i’m grabbed by the creature and taken into the air.
Some brief close up quick shots of my reaction and the creatures fangs and eyes are shown as we grapple 5 metres in the air. The creature bites me on the neck. I pull my digital pen out from my coat pocket and drive it into the eye of the creature. It lets out a horrifying shriek and throws me to the ground. I then wake up at my desk.
Iv’e presumably fallen asleep whilst working on my animation, was it all a dream?
the security guard then walks in and tells me to leave, the same as before.
I then leave the uni, get on my bus and feel a pain in my neck. I check my neck and a close up shot exposes a bleeding bite wound. I look back at the uni from the upper deck bus window and see the silhouette of the creature standing on top of the building. A lighting strike then exposes the creature.

AFTER HOURS (production bible page)
To add some depth to my two minute film, I added some extra story details within my production bible. This page is a newspaper article of the day after the night my film is set. The aim of this article is to make the events of the film seem as if they actually happened and to expand the narrative a little.
I also added some horror easter eggs. J Carpenter (John Carpenter) is mentioned as the writer of the article and Robert Englund is the name of my security guard character, Englund being the name of the actor who played A Nightmare On Elm Streets Freddy Krueger.
Growing up on 80′s horror films and movies like Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street being my inspiration for making After Hours, I felt it was only right to give them a mention.
AFTER HOURS PRODUCTION BIBLE (Front, side and back covers)
When constructing my production bible, I decided to make the bible look like an 80′s VHS tape. I accomplished this by ordering an old VHS tape from Ebay and replacing its original cover art with the cover art I made for my film. I added an 18 certificate, along with a VHS logo, barcode and synopsis just to make it feel authentic.
