She walked hurriedly but without running in case someone saw them they wouldnât look suspicious. Lilith avoided looking at Anthony, still trying to asume what had happened. There was too much she didnât know about him and his reasons. She stopped on a corner and put her hands on her hips in a stubborn gesture. âI have my motorbike a few blocks awayâ Lilith said once they werenât too close to the crime scene. She always left her vehicle in a nearby street when she had to do something illegal so she could flee the place quickly. There was nothing she wanted more in that moment than getting home and taking a long shower. What a shitty day. âSo I guess Iâll see you in the office on Mondayâ she tried to joke half-heartedly.
Anthony nodded, stopping alongside Lilith. There was definitely something else going on with her that he didn't know about, but hey. She didn't know his motives, and he didn't know hers. They didn't really need to, not really. They had a truce going, after all. His own vehicle was parked even further away, thanks to how he'd had to get out earlier to follow after his chosen target.
He hummed out a laugh at her joke, feeling fairly amused as far as jokes went. "I guess you will," Anthony replied, giving her a quick smile and a nod before he headed off towards his own vehicle. This was definitely not the situation he'd imagined he'd end up in.

Realizing that reasoning with the masked man was futile, Jade felt tears burn her eyes. For much of her young existence, sheâd avoided fighting. The random scars and bruises she woke with were from Tessa, not of her own escapades. Jade feared violence and always worried that her lack of aggression would lead to a losing situation. Now here she was, facing a knife wielding maniac, and her mind was out of answers. Fight, you pussy. Tessaâs voice was the last thing she needed to hear. Jade opted for the opposite. She took a deep breath and screamed as loud as she could before turning to run. Maybe if she ran fast enough, sheâd be able to escape the encounter with her life. Or even better, without having to fight.Â
The girl screamed. And then she ran. Anthony wanted to sigh, but he didn't have the time for that. He fastened the grip he had on the hilt of his knife, and then he dashed after her, doing his best to keep in mind where there might be patrols. They were definitely close by, and they had definitely heard the girl scream.Â
The balaclava was making it a bit harder to see where he was running, but Anthony was used to that. The dark of the night combined with how he was running through the alleyways? That was the real challenge. Not to mention that the girl could run, and she probably had a boost of adrenaline fueling her as well. Still, he knew how to track people and follow them.
Soon she was within distance again, and Anthony sped up, preparing to corner her so he could dispose of her quietly.
Lilith snorted in disdain. âOf course I havenât dropped anything. And the gun is untraceable so they will get nothing from the bullet either.â She might be new at murdering agents, but was an expert at covering up her tracks. Not that Anthony needed to know that. âDonât worry about it.â
She knew Anthony was considering to kill her too, so she sneaked a hand to her holster and grabbed the gun again. It was obvious how his thoughts ran; considering if it was more risky to kill her now or letting her live. Lilith could kill him as easily as he could, but there was no need. They were both in this mess up to their necks. Anthony seemed to decide the same and she relaxed. âOkay, then we need to leave the place as soon as possible, and not talk about this with anyoneâ. She considered adding a threat, but Anthony was Black Ops, no some teenage outlaw she could scare easily.
Anthony just nodded in response, seemingly deciding it wasn't needed to react to the disdainful snort. He was just glad she had her wits about her, really. Could use more of that sort, really. "Let's go, then," Anthony said, his tone simple as he began walking outside, still feeling on edge. They couldn't be too sure that they were entirely alone in the area - after all, the guy from earlier, the one Lilith had shot, had to have had backup. Unless they were abnormally lucky, that was. Chances were backup would arrive, eventually; it was just a matter of how Lilith and Anthony would be long gone by the time the backup got there.
The deaths would be blamed on the conflict between the gangs and the Government, possibly, but regardless they'd probably get away scot-free.

The shadow moved closer, taking the form of a man. She saw the glint of metal in his hand and Jade knew that he was going to kill her. Her mind was screaming for her to run but her body was not listening to its commands, her feet feeling like they were glued to the pavement. Frozen in terror. Why had she come to the city alone? She wanted to be back in the treehouse, swearing to herself she would listen to Bingo next time. Her heart was pounding so hard she was sure it was visible. Finally her legs started working and Jade began to back away slowly, holding her hands out in protest. âPlease!â What else could she do but beg? This, of course, was the very moment Jade realized that her switchblade was in her boots and she was wearing sneakers. âI didnât see anything, I swear.â she lied in a shaky voice, her eyes wide. How could she get out of this?
The girl looked young - nearing her twenties, probably. Killing her wasn't something Anthony wanted to do, which, in some ways, was immensely reassuring. He hadn't gone completely insane yet, he supposed. Still, he had to. Probably. He was wearing a balaclava, but the entire thing seemed far too risky. What if the first thing she did was find the patrol and alert them? Sure, curfew was on, but he was pretty sure a lot of them would look past that if she alerted them to the murder.
His knife was glinting in the dim light as he began advancing towards her, feeling calm with his decision to kill the girl. There wasn't a way around it, and he'd done much, much worse before, Anthony suspected. He didn't bother with replying to her pleas - there wasn't any use. She'd just get hysterical anyhow.
Jade knew Bingo said not to leave the tree house but the environment was beyond suffocating. Everyone spoke in hushed tones and the name âNixonâ was mentioned in just about every conversation. Tired of the tension, Jade made an little escape plan.  She waited for most of the younger Lost Boys to fall asleep before throwing off her covers, and scrambling over to the window. She still had on the clothes sheâd been wearing for the day. Jade carefully swung her leg over the sill, ducking her head out the window and reaching for the nearest branch. She thought her hold was strong enough but when she used her other leg to push off the tree-house, Jade lost her grip and crashed to the ground. It wasnât too far of a fall but it definitely hurt. She lay silently, waiting to see if anyone inside had noticed before brushing herself off and limping away.
Downtown Battery City wasnât exactly the type of quiet she needed to relax, so Jade found herself wandering aimlessly among the residential areas. The houses were quaint in her opinion, something sheâd always wanted to have but never saw herself living in one. The alleys behind the neighborhood were a bit more disgusting than sheâd expected, with garbage strewn about, probably due to stray cats, and the smell of waste followed you down the street. Jade turned the corner and started down another street when she was two shadows at the end. Jade flattened herself against the wall, for fear that it was night patrol. She saw one of the shadows move quickly and blood splatter the walls. Jade gasped before realizing she was in earshot of the person and clapped a hand over her mouth. Whoever hadnât heard her right?Â
Another one of them was down, and he was one person closer to his goal, Anthony mused. All he had to do now was clean up and get the hell out of dodge, and no one would be any wiser as to what had happened to his chosen target. He'd begun assembling the body, rolling it into a body bag - and then he heard a gasp, and he was back to being on full alert.Â
Who the fuck had seen him? There wasn't a single reason for anyone to be gasping in this particular area unless they'd seen him and the corpse. Hell, he wasn't even sure they'd seen him - it was dark, after all, and the alley wasn't exactly impressively lit.Â
He took out his knife again, holding it at the ready as he pulled up the balaclava again and moved silently toward where he thought he'd heard the noise. And then he saw her - a young girl, younger than twenty, probably - flattened against the wall, hand over her mouth. Anthony sort of wanted to mentally berate himself for always ending up in situations where people discovered him. First Lilith, now this one? He was getting rusty.
Lilith felt a wave of relief wash over her when Anthony appeared. He seemed to materialize from the darkness, as there had been no footsteps or sound of breathing before he was in front of her. âNothing,â she said, ânot anymore.â It had all happened too fast but she was glad they were all dead. That way Anthony and herself wouldnât have to worry about an investigation. It looked obvious that some gang member had commited a murder, hide the corpse, then had a shootout with another agent and both had died. It made sense and Lilith would be safe. She shouldnât have gotten involved in that mess in the first place.
âI had to!â she exclaimed, distressed. âIt was an agent, I know it. He would have caught us. The other guy was already dead anyway, we should be okay.â Lilith wanted to ask him about what was going on, because Anthony hadnât had a good reason to kill the agent, but once again she couldnât accuse him of anything when she was involved in illegal activity too. A shame, because curiosity was killing her.
Anthony nodded, feeling relatively calmer already. If no one in the area was alive except for himself and Lilith, that meant there wouldn't be much more trouble. All they had to do was make sure they hadn't dropped anything that could pin them to the crime, and then they just had to walk away and never mention it again.
"Good," he stated, "good. Did you drop anything? Anything at all? We can't get pinned to the crimescene." He could easily kill her, Anthony realized, but he was also acutely aware that he probably didn't have to. Didn't really want to, either. From her choice of words, it seemed like Lilith trusted him somewhat, despite having seen him kill someone. Well. Maybe trust wasn't the right notion. Probably more a feeling of a stalemate.

âDonât!â Lilith said in a loud whisper. She didnât want to be left alone, and overall, she didnât want Anthony somewhere where she couldnât see him. Itâd be too easy for him to shoot her when she wasnât paying attention. But he was already dragging the corpse away from the alley. Cursing under her breath, Lilith turned so she could watch Anthony at the same time than keeping an eye on the end of the street.Â
A new round of gunshots made Lilith twitch. That was one of those thorny situations she never knew if she was getting out alive. Unsure of what to do, she slid quietly to the main street to peek around the corner, assuming that while Anthony was gone the source of the shots were her biggest worry. Lilith didnât like what she was seeing, at all. There was a body, but she couldnât make out if it was the gang member she had given the files or not. Much closer to her was an older Government agent. He was facing in the other direction and still had his gun in his hand, like he had just shot down the outlaw. Before Lilith could react he turned around and saw her half hiding behind the corner. It was a reflex action, and there wasnât much she could have done anyway, but she drew her gun and shot him in the chest.
Lilith didnât even wait to see what happened, she had hit the objective and if the man wasnât dead heâd be soon enough. So she turned around and hurried towards the building Anthony had dissapeared into. âAnthony!â she called out. It was extremely dark inside. âWe have to leave, now!â She didnât even understand how she had became an ally with the Black Ops agent, but sheâd rather be with someone in that mess than on her own. âGod dammit, Barrett, where the fuck are you?!â
The body was nearly taken care of by the time he heard the new round of gunshots being fired. It made him tense up, more alert than he'd been before. Anthony made quick work of covering the corpse with whatever he could find inside the large building - most of it large plastic sheets. Perfect for covering up corpses. He finally finished before he headed outside, feeling stressed beyond belief. Had Lilith managed getting into trouble the short while he was gone? What the fuck was happening?
He was halfway across the large, abandoned factory hall by the time Lilith had entered the building. "I'm here, Bryce. What the fuck is going on outside?" He'd heard another gunshot resound through the area after the second round of gunshots - a single gunshot.
Lilith didn't look like she was hurt, though. ".. Fuck, did you shoot someone?"

Five times Anthony kisses Hallie, and one time she kisses him.
it didn't work
I.
So he's a little strange, but he's just rescued her from Government agents. He's got a beard, and he looks sort of wild, but the war between the gangs and the Government has intensified the last couple of months, so she let's that slide. He's not in the gangs, that's for sure. But considering he just shot the people aiming at her with no problem, she lets it slide. She's feeling confident he's not with the Government, either.
"Anthony Barrett," he says, despite Hallie not having asked. That's when she breaks.
It's all a bit too much - she's never actually seen someone die, despite having been out there for a good while now. That coupled with the adrenaline from having to run through what she'd thought was an abandoned suburb, snipers at her heels, makes her break down in tears. She slumps down on the ground, and breathing is a lot more hard. Hallie's shaking, because the adrenaline of having to run is fading and that means that the panic is settling in, like a steady hand around her throat.
But then there's a hand around her shoulders and he's holding her close and she can't remember what he said afterwards, but she knows he somehow managed to calm her down.
Hallie doesn't think about how he kissed the top of her head without feeling slightly more like a teenage girl with a crush. She blames it on the beard. It suits him.
II.
It's a few weeks since the first time Hallie Stoker met Anthony Barrett, and since then she's been helpfully filled in by Scout and Katty. Apparently he used to be Government. Apparently, he's also been planning on taking them down for a while. Judging from what she saw the day he saved her life, she doesn't doubt that he has the means. Judging from what she's been told compared to what she's experienced - Anthony's not usually the type to sit down and comfort crying people.
Part of that makes her grin just a little.Â
Still, even that part didn't ever expect to run into him again. She's on her way back from Tinker's secret hideout, and then there's a caravan of Government jeeps and she's feeling pretty certain that she's going to die - and then nothing happens.
Hallie didn't even hear the gunshots, but she can see each of the drivers falling down from their seats. These are scout cars - a driver in each car, naturally, and their partner. Four out eight agents are already dead. The four alive look dumbfounded, and they slump over too.
She doesn't know how he does it, but somehow Anthony consistently leaves death in his wake. Like a natural disaster. He's saved her life twice now, and she has no idea how he does it. Hallie climbs out of the circle of Jeeps, pretending she has a bit more courage in her bones than she actually does. Anthony Barrett is walking towards her, a rifle of some sort at his side. The beard's still there, but he looks a little less clean-polished than he did the last time. He has a few bruises. Some wounds, even. "Hallie," she says, doing a good job of not letting her voice waver. "Hallie Stoker."Â
The tears start trailing down her cheeks, but she feels disconnected. She starts wiping them away, but there's that shock of having been nearly shot and killed - again - coupled with how Anthony has just murdered eight people in cold blood in the matter of minutes. She doesn't question it when he pulls her into a very soft hug. He's an excellent hugger, really, but she doesn't register that while it's actually happening. He doesn't comment on how she begins sobbing as he hugs her, and she doesn't comment on how he kisses her forehead.
III.
Tinker does a good job of not mentioning how she seems different these days. The other Killjoys barely take notice, which, she supposes, is a good thing, because judging from how everyone reacted to Scout dating Mitchell Marrow - she doubts the reactions to her having just the tiniest of crushes on Anthony Barrett would have been taken well.
So it's off to Tinker's she goes, because she likes his company and his cave of a home. It's quiet there for the most part, save for Tinker's consistent working - other than the days he decides he needs company and blasts large-scale and disturbing symphonies throughout the previously abandoned facility. Don't even get her started on the dubstep and electronica.
But then one day, when she's sitting on a bench and he's busy with doing- something- with some wires, he suddenly stops. Tinker looks up, and he has this mischievous grin on his face. She's only seen it a few times. "Something's different," he says, without any further explanation as he studies her as though he can get the answer just from looking at Hallie. "What?" the redhead replies, a disbelieving smile on her face.
"You've met someone." Tinker's still grinning, but the grin looks a little happier as he notes how she just bites her lip in retaliation. Hallie doesn't feel like she can lie to Tinker. ".. Anthony," she finally says, and Tinker just grins. Even applauds a little. "No longer a bachelorette! Well done, Stoker!" They laugh for a good ten minutes, grins on both their faces.
She doesn't admit to how she has dreams about Anthony kissing her more often than she should. Sure, it's a crush, but he's a former Government agent with a penchant for murder. Doesn't exactly make her feel less guilty about how she's pretty sure that dreaming about Anthony Barrett making out with her beneath the stars is cause for being seriously judged by her peers.
So it's cheesy, but whatever. Hallie can dream about what she wants to dream about.
IV.
Tinker doesn't even blink an eye when she asks him if he can hack into the Government's database. She knows he's fully capable - for a seemingly peaceful rebel, Tinker's actually one of the scariest she's met. In a world based on technology and digital information, he's the only one she knows personally that's fully capable of bringing the entire structure down. (She's seen him on his bad days, and she's often wondered why he hasn't done it yet. He says she'll find the answer in the slums and the more ruined neighbourhoods in Battery City.)
"Anthony Barrett," the file says. "30 years old." He's not just an ex-agent, it turns out, he's ex-Black Ops. Tinker gives her a worried sort of look, and she just nods. "30 years? That's not too bad, right?" Hallie says, a light grin on her face, and Tinker just laughs in response.
She doesn't tell anyone, not even Tinker, about she meets Anthony three days later and he kisses her cheek because she can't stop shaking. It feels intimate and it makes her feel like there's butterflies flying inside her, threatening to burst out if she so much as thinks about it. Hallie's vaguely aware that it's beginning to be a bit uncomfortable that people always die when Anthony appears.
V.
Anthony's a bit more dangerous than he is mysterious, because in between Tinker's efficient research and what she's experienced herself, it quickly becomes clear that he's living in the desert someplace himself. That just leaves how he's somehow always able to help her. She asks him once - one of the few times she's stumbled upon him and he hasn't had to kill someone in the area - about how he's always managed to save her in the nick of time.
"I don't know," he replies, looking as apologetically perplexed as she feels.Â
He doesn't question it when she sits down by his makeshift-campsite. Doesn't say anything, really. But Hallie can deal with that. She figures that he's maybe a little bit like Tinker - he's been alone for so long that a little company isn't entirely out of the question.
She ends up asking him a lot of questions, and surprisingly, he answers them. That's not what she's heard from Scout and Katty about how he usually is. Then again, it might have something to do with which questions she's asking and the small comments she makes.
Hallie wakes up to the roar of a campfire. She's wrapped in a thick, woolen blanket, because the desert is cold at night. She thinks he might have patted her head a little and maybe even kissed her cheek again while she slept, but she isn't sure. She doesn't mention it for the fear of it just being her having imagined the whole thing.
I.
He's saved her again and she's feeling a lot more brave than she has the other times, because Anthony saving her has somehow become the norm. The adrenaline's still there, though.
So naturally, she rushes at him to give him a kiss full on the lips, terror be damned.
It takes a short while before Anthony starts responding, placing his hands very carefully on her lower back as she cups his face between her hands as she tries to convey everything through the kiss she's giving him. Thank you, for instance. And I think you're pretty damn attractive for a raggedy rebel with a beard and a rifle. I've noticed is another thing.
Hallie figures that Anthony pulling her just ever so slightly closer is a good sign.
