thinking about the “it’s not her” scene w jess in season four because my god. that initial look on jess’s face when he thinks he’s seen rory. half fear and half hope because he wants to look upon her even when she turns away in hate. he wants her no matter what, no matter what she wants of him whether it be space or time or just friends or dating or any of it. and then even when he’s told that rory cut her hair, jess still waits for the girl to turn. and it’s like he just needs to see if it’s her just in case it is. maybe because it isn’t. like maybe part of him is relieved because he hates that he wants her so much because he thinks he ruins everything he touches and he never wants to ruin her. but he thinks that’s all he knows so he hates himself for wanting her when he thinks he doesn’t deserve to. that initial look on jess’s face when he thinks he’s seen rory. half fear and half hope because he wants to look upon her even when she turns away in hate. he wants her no matter what, no matter what she wants of him whether it be space or time or just friends or dating or any of it. he would take anything she deigned to give him, but he’d want more and he’d feel so guilty and self-loathing for asking more of her.

watching s4 through the lens of rory being depressed and struggling just adds so much to the story i wish we got canon confirmation of it

Rory not being able to call herself and Jess "friends" when Lorelai asks her about it but awkwardly downplaying it to "friend-ish" is so hilarious. Girl, you're overcorrecting there. 😂 Because if she ACTUALLY only wanted to be his friend, why shouldn't she admit that?! Haha! But she was so freaked out by the scrutiny of "Oh no. She suspects I have Feelings. I must convince her and also myself that there are NO Feelings! I don't care at all, actually!" that she thought "friends" was... too STRONG of a word? Haha! It's like the time when a mutual friend asked my future husband how he felt about me, and he (instantly suspicious) said, "She's ok, I GUESS..." WE WERE FRIENDS!!! GOOD friends! Like... why would you say that about an actual friend? 😂 (Was I devastated at the time anyway? YES... But yeah, he liked me and was freaked out about it, haha. In retrospect... methinks the lady doth protest too much, is what I'm saying.)

Jess brining Rory food because he heard that Lorelai was out of town and he didn’t know how long she was going to be gone for. He knows what it’s like to have a parent who sporadically leaves unannounced, probably with no food or money in the house. Even though he knows that Lorelai is a seemingly good mother, he still knows what it’s like to be lied to by a parental figure. He definitely had a voice nagging him in the back of his head to check on Rory.

listen i love luke and lorelai with all my heart but there’s something so satisfying about luke not speaking to lorelai for an entire summer after their fight about jess. he stopped talking to lorelai the only person he’d drop literally everything for the minute she calls or asks him something only because she attacked jess. it shows how much luke actually loves and cares about jess even when jess was being impossible to him. it’s probably the first time anyone stood up for jess his entire life too.

sorry, still thinking about how jess who skimps and saves and hoards every dollar he earns shelled out 90 bucks for the chance to eat bad pasta with rory
