NICHOLAS HOULT as PETER III The Great (2020) - S02E10
A Warlock’s Wish in AO3
Hello, hello everyone, coming out of comfy coffin to give (maybe) important information.
AWW (and another one of my work) has been hidden in AO3 for violation of terms (completely my fault). 7 days ago, I tried to edit it to remove the violation but maybe I missed some so AO3 peeps hid it now. I tried to appeal but not sure if it’ll go through in time because they said it’ll be deleted in 7 days.
Hopefully, that won’t be the case in 7 days but just giving a heads-up! It’s still up in FF.net though.
Phoebus Apollo ✨
Remember back in season 3 when Daisy decided to go on strike because she wanted more help in the kitchen? Then Mrs.Patmore while rolling her eyes exasperated realises that Thomas gave Daisy the idea? Yeah, this made it canon that Thomas spends his time in the servants hall smoking, scheming, blackmailing and ranting about workers rights.

There are obviously many Thomas moments that make me sad and feeling like chewing glass but one that absolutely destroys me is when Carson is getting ready for his wedding with Mrs. Hughes and is giving the flower arrangements to the boys. And everyone’s getting one except Thomas, and he has to ask for one (which Carson gives reluctantly).
And it’s just so sad because, poor Thomas just wants to feel welcomed in something and like he belongs and they won’t let him :( LIKE LET THOMAS HAVE HIS GODDAMN FLOWER :((
Bittersweet Thomas Barrow moments that make me want to smile and cry at the same time
Andy apologizing to Thomas when Thomas offers to teach him how to read - I think this is one of the few honest apologies Thomas has ever received.
Master George gifting Thomas an orange after his attempt - I mean, how can you not love this?
Cora thanking Thomas for rescuing Edith from the fire (literally one of the only times the family genuinely thanked him).
Robert realizing that Thomas, after all, is just as a human being with feelings, emotions and pain as everyone else.
Phyllis being genuinely concerned for Thomas in S5 and constantly asking him if he's alright and not giving in, even though he shakes her questions off everytime.
Phyllis not asking questions about 'choose your own path' but instead instantly understands and takes him to the doctor right away.
Richard asking Thomas out for a date multiple times (in the ''swan on the lake' scene, in this deleted scene at the servant's table and after the prank, making sure, he knows where Thomas will show up).
These two absolute legends at Turtons who whistled after Thomas, trying to flirt with him (underrated queens).
The moment Phyllis realized that what Thomas meant with 'he hopes, Joseph would make more of his life than Thomas has ever made of his.'
Mary visiting Thomas after his attempt, asking him how he is doing.
Richard gifting Thomas the pendant and Thomas looking like he's in a dream - the first time I saw this man speechless.
Mrs. Hughes comforting Thomas in the pouring rain in S3 after he got fired and basically kicked out of the house.
Thomas standing up for himself when Carson called him 'revolted' and 'foul'.
Phyllis basically encouraging Thomas to go on a date with Richard.
Every Thomas + children interaction.
Thomas talking and comforting Edward Courtenay in S2.
Thomas asking Richard if they want to be friends... FRIENDS...
I could think of so many more but I think that's enough for now. Thanks for listening to this completely unnecessary list.
There is something to be said about how Thomas was shown to be particularly cruel back in season 1 after the soap incident just when he was making a valid point about not wanting every moment of his life to be consumed by the people he works for. Don't get me wrong he definitely was cruel especially since he followed up his comments on Cora's misfortune with a dig at William's grieving and he 100% deserved William's retaliation. Ideally he should have left the room after he saw them all grieve.
What I'm saying is that it is very much a choice that the minute Thomas was saying something that contradicted the "loyal servant" role the show likes to romanticize, the show undermined his opinion by making him especially mean, in a way that both the characters and more importantly the audience are left thinking more about how cruel he is rather than the fact that he did make a good point about how a servants life is essentially consumed by the family they serve. Maybe it isnt wrong to not want to share in the family's grief or even feel a need to.
This article written at the end of season 1 kind of encapsulates my point: Thomas, for all his cruelty, is also the most clear-eyed about the dehumanizing effects of a life of service. After Cora loses her baby, Thomas isn’t quite sure what the big deal is. “Why must we live through them?” he asks. While his lack of sympathy—“they’re no bigger than a hamster at that point”—is extreme, Thomas does have a point. The staff is so invested in the intrigue upstairs precisely because they have been denied lives of their own (Meredith Blake for AV club, 2011).
I firmly believe that Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham is not only bisexual, but he earnestly believes that every man on planet Earth is just naturally bi.
On the one hand, he totally gets Thomas being attracted to men. Who doesn’t fool around with other chaps at school or in the trenches, come on now??? But eventually you grow up, get married to some nice girl, have children. That’s just how it’s done. So Robert simultaneously juggles confusion regarding Thomas’s inability to “get with the program,” so to speak.
And then of course there’s the unspoken, lightly simmering sexual tension between him and Bates. Robert “knows” it’s mutual - meanwhile, Bates knows it isn’t actually mutual, but he’s much too polite to ever mention that.

I'm obsessed with that one s3 deleted scene, O'Brien is like "how is the earl" and Thomas is like "well his daughter just died suddenly so I guess he's sad or something idk" and O'Brien is like "wow that sucks, anyway do you think Jimmy is gay, or..?"
At some point, on the boat to America:
Robert: look I get it, everyone’s a little bit gay
Thomas:
Robert: I kissed every single one of my classmates on the mouth at Eton. That doesn’t make ME gay.
Thomas:
Robert:
Thomas: I have bad news milord
funny how in the entire show thomas has a lot of problems with loneliness and he can never get a boyfriend or have his feelings reciprocated, meanwhile robert offhandedly says "oh boys at eton. who hasn't been kissed by men?" like he cant stop making men fall in love with him. i respect him so much for that
You ever think about the fact that Downton Abbey portrayed Thomas as being in the wrong first for volunteering as a medic in an attempt to avoid the trenches and then for finally reaching his breaking point and deciding to deliberately injure his hand. Like I'm sorry why should he sacrifice his life for a war effort he doesn't support?
The takeaway from this storyline for me was that Thomas is an intelligent person who is able to think critically and independently. He knew before the war was announced that he had to prepare himself because he was aware that working class young men and many minority groups would be forced onto the frontlines as canon fodder. Furthermore, he also didn't buy into the popular rhetoric of the time which went on about how honourable it was to serve for a king and country that couldn't care less about giving you basic rights.

I like how Thomas Barrow’s apology/reconciliation language is offering tea and toast. This man has footmanisms embedded so deep he can no longer escape them, but he will gladly, without resentment, use his skills to serve the people he cares about.
