"they get sexualized and projected upon all the time, but it's apparently bad when they choose to tackle these themes of their own free will? hm. interesting."
but that's not the issue tho. the issue is not that they're sexualizing themselves, it's that they're sexualizing women. and using a Latin sound to do it.
im Mexican and i turned my mom into an Atiny but to her "mamacita" sounds like a bunch of men cat-calling a woman in the streets 😕
i think it's disappointing that they chose a Latin sound of all sounds to sexualize women. it's very stereotypical and not complimentary.
and i also think it's disappointing that atiny that aren't hispanic dismiss the criticism as "you're stupid and want to control ateez! they're grown men they can do what they want!"
well then im a grown woman and i can criticize them for sexualizing latinas, no?
i was so excited when they started exploring a more Latin sound in Fin and Gh1. but now it turned into "mamacita so hot she gets me going!"
also the criticism of the spanish is not because ppl have issues with the language itself, but bc Bad uses a music genre called "brazilian funk", but doesn't use brazilian portuguese
spanish is my native language so obviously i have no issue with artists using it, i like being able to understand what they're saying. but when they use spanish in a music genre that was born in portuguese-speaking country, i also understand why the atiny from that country are disappointed
i think these are all valid criticisms from people whose cultures and women are already so exploited by foreigners.
but people keep dismissing it because no criticism of ateez is allowed 😕
So people are idiots and control freaks for DISLIKING CULTURAL APPROPRIATION AND THE SEXUALIZATION OF WOMEN.
Right… Right.
I wanted to respond to both of you in one message since the topic is similar - I hope that's okay.
To start with, I want to say I'm admittedly very uninformed about the various music genres which were born in Latin America, so I didn't know the exact music influence behind 'BAD' came from Brazil, so thank you for sharing your knowledge here - that really does drastically change things.
I also want to say I've had to fully steer clear of social media these last few months due to some added stressors in my private life, so the only direct feedback from Atiny I'd seen regarding this comeback came from YouTube comment sections and what the Anon from before had shared in their question, so I'm really, truly sorry for my ignorance on the 100% valid reasons you and other Atiny are upset about this comeback. It really wasn't my intention to dismiss any of this. I just truly didn't know better.
I know there's a massive issue with all Central and South American countries getting lumped together by outsiders despite the vast cultural differences, so I absolutely understand why you'd be pissed or sad about seeing this issue reinforced from artists you've been supporting.
I was also already highly aware of how fetishized women of color in general are, but since I'd seen so many Latinx Atiny actively teach Mingi the kind of words and phrases found in the lyrics, I didn't feel it was my place to go against that, but I realize now that by doing that, I just fell straight into the trap of treating y'all like a monolith, so I'm really, really sorry about that. I know there'll never be a large group of people where a few can speak for all. Though I assume the type of thinking I was using might be exactly what led to the Spanish lines being put in the song - they assumed it was okay because it was Atiny who'd taught them these things at send-offs and via fancalls.
Another thing I want to make clear is that I don't think Ateez are above being deserving of criticism when they mess up - far from it. The members themselves, especially Hongjoong and San, have repeatedly said they want to be told when they do something wrong so they can apologize properly and do better in the future. So I hope your words can reach them through an Atiny on Fromm or via another platform.
I think both the members and Edenary should - and would want to - know they've unintentionally hurt people who've been supporting them.
Though I will say that while, yes, it's impossible for someone to know everything about every culture, they really should've done their research the second they chose to borrow from Brazilian culture since they are now profiting off it.
P.S.: It's 5.30AM and I haven't slept yet, so if anything I said is incoherent or if there's something I haven't touched on that you want to discuss or that I'm still being ignorant about, please do let me know. I really want to give space for everyone to be heard and I don't ever want anyone to feel like I'm dismissing their concerns or valid anger/criticism.
